  1. I feel like it is just about time to start a Sony PMW-F5 / F55 thread? 😉 They're becoming even cheaper on eBay than the F3 was back when I first purchased my F3 a zillion years ago! Only US $739 from Adorama, put in a "best offer" and get it for even less: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235749404194 Then get yourself a cheap XQD to SXS card adapter, and you'll be away laughing with cheap media: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003950544795.html As you can pick up 128gig XQD cards on eBay for half of what the SXS cards would cost.

  2. I read a couple of years ago that the newest version of the Rawlite OLPF for the OG BMPCC and BMMCC has much less impact on sharpness than the original one did. I bought mine (two, one for each BMMCC) in 2019 and 2020 so not sure if that's the latest version but the images are sharp enough for me, keeping in mind that for video I have a personal preference for less sharpness (though it's better to have sharpness and dial it back than to try to add sharpness that isn't in the image to begin with). I have occasionally experienced moiré on my OG BMPCC (which doesn't have an OLPF) but the main reason I got the OLPF was to avoid having to use UV-cut filters on my lenses. One less thing to think about and carry with me.

  3. I mentioned here some time ago that I was planning to make a mini-doc at this year's Cambridge Folk Festival - the UK's leading such event that this year celebrated its 60th anniversary. Well it didn't work out quite how I wanted. I took my 15yr old with me and had expected that he would go off independently in search of the things 15 year old boys hope they will find, but no. He wanted to stick to me like glue, as long as he could also stick to his camping chair and his phone all day every day, so I didn't get to do the vox pops and the storytelling I had planned (I still have 200 cards I had printed with the details of how to see the film once finished, to hand to interviewees). Ah well. I've booked to go again next year. Alone! Here is what I did manage to get. Shot 4k on the A6600 - an underrated camera in my opinion and I don't think it scrubs up badly at all. This was exclusively with my now-doughty 18-105 f4 and subjected to pretty much the same grading process as the last clip I posted here ( ) Anyway. Hope you all like it. Edited to add: Select 4K and turn the volume right up!

  4. Actually, that's true and forgot about those... OK, on a GH7 I could run that set up...but not over an S5ii set up which is what I have now. 'Sideways' I guess it would be but probably not backwards!

  5. But Pana have the 10-25 and 25-50 1.7 zoom, it is quite nice for sure. My friend got those for his 2 GH6.

  6. As a G9 owner, note 4k50p/60p recording time is limited to 10 minutes. It's 30 minutes for everything else. G9 is a later design camera than the GH5 with better IBIS and AF (it's also bit larger than the GH5). It can't be powered over USB, but 3rd party dummy battery power adaptors are cheap. IMHO the (oversampled) 1080 50p quality isn't that far behind 4k50p in real world usage (and it can record it in 150Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2), if you need more than 10 minutes continuous recording. The more recent GH5 ii basically combines the best bits of the GH5 and G9. As for the 'long compact zoom', the Pana 14-140mm F3.5-F5.6 is an excellent small and light 'superzoom' if you don't mind the variable aperture. Probably my all round favourite M43 lens. The 'much brighter at the long end' 35-100mm F2.8 is also fairly compact, but has more focus breathing.

  7. Hey, I agree with your statements. The right and fair way to go. But this world now is not right and fair. Money has Totally taken over everyone's little brain, rich or poor and we are well, just screwed, plain and simple. Yeah, I am a Boomer, but I have seen a total shift in my lifetime to this world being a total shitshow now. It is not just in this country alone. 50 years ago the world seemed pretty fair, well not if you were in sub-Sharahna Africa, but now we All seem to be in sub-Sharahna Africa mode if you are not in the top 10%. And the trend even has a worse outlook forward. It isn't looking good boys and girls. Right now a heck of a lot people that are young wished they had been a Boomer. It was a great ride.

  8. Microsoft has the argument, that the open web is fair use and can be fed page by page into the machine. In same way Google indexes the WWW. If they decide against AI and the derivative works are not allowed to be neural network influenced by other works, it might have some unintended consequences - such as preventing human artists from using their influences. After all, ai and us are working in pretty similar ways. Maybe the difference here is that the data of the literal original is crunched. It is dissolved up into numbers and understood in terms of patterns and styles by the machine. So those original 1s and 0s are stored on OpenAI's server, in totality and their entirety. Whereas a human artist, never has a precise copy of the exact original digital work in our head... only the abstract version in working memory.

  9. Hi everyone, I have two Sony PMW-F3s: one has a damaged sensor, and the other is in perfect condition. However, the damaged one has the RGB444 upgrade installed, while the one in good condition doesn’t, because the RGB upgrade software was never installed with the SxS memory card. According to the Sony PMW-F3 manual, it’s possible to uninstall the RGB upgrade from the camera that has it by transferring the upgrade software back onto the SxS card, so it can be installed on another camera. The issue is that to uninstall the RGB upgrade from the camera to the SxS card, I need to enter the 4-digit password used when I first installed the upgrade. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the password. The manual says to contact a Sony service representative if the password is forgotten, but since this is such an old camera, I’m unsure if that will help. I already tried contacting Sony, but I was told the camera is no longer serviced. I’m asking if anyone here has been in a similar situation. What procedure did you follow, and how did the Sony service representative help you if you forgot the 4-digit code? Back in the days? Perhaps you worked as a Sony representative servicing Sony PMW-F3 related issues and remember how you helped folks who would forget the 4 digit password they would pick before installing the rgb upgrade? Or maybe you can pinpoint any other solution? I really appreciate if you read this far, and thank for any help! Wish you a good day!
