X-M5 New Fujifilm Creator Focused Camera
eatstoomuchjam and one other reacted to Ninpo33 for a topic
75% Film stuff and 25% photos is my norm. I have 0 native Fuji lenses but have the Kipon M42 - X speedbooster as well as the Konica - X adapter also the Minolta AF - X adapter so I have a lot of my vintage glass needs met. Metabones makes a Minolta AF - X speedbooster but it’s pricey at $450. Still… I have the whole set from 16mm - 200mm and it’s really amazing glass. I’ll get a few native lenses for autofocus but probably just a couple wides. What I’m most excited about is the Blazer Nero 1.5x Anamorphic adapter which looks great on APS-C and will be a perfect match to the 6.2k open gate raw. That’s a monster of an image for the price. I also have a whole set of 1960’s Yashica and Mamiya rangefinder lenses that I’m slowly converting to Mirrorless. A few of them were “half frame” lenses that shot two images per 35mm frame. These fit APS-C perfectly and are nice F/1.4 lenses. So yeah, lots of options LOL. what are your favorite Fuji X lenses? I’ve heard great things about the 16mm and older 35mm f/1.4.2 points -
Just got the S9 from airport, that 15% discount on tax on top of promo discount is pretty good value, and given it is only NZ$100 more for the 20-60 kit so I got this combo instead of the 18-40 which cost $1000 more 😂 ( another ridiculous pricing from Pana) I m thinking getting the Meike 35mm F2, should go well with 20-60mm.1 point

ohhhhh.... I'd never even looked into those lenses. (how should I search for them on eBay? How do I specifically restrict the search just to half frame rangerfinder lenses?) I guess due to them being rangefinder lenses, they must not have been too popular during the DSLR era at all. (as DSLR mounts are too deep) And being half frame lenses I guess the mirrorless FF shooters don't want them either. Would be perfect however for Fujifilm shooters. Only just starting lately to dabble in using my old Fujifilm X-A3 as a casual stills camera I can carry with me most times whenever I feel like it (I want something compact / light / cheap / decent, I think the X-A3 with APS-C lenses fits the bill here). So thus I recently put together a very cheap Fujifilm lens kit of native X mount lenses: 7artisans 12mm F2.8 II (Manual Focus) Sirui 21mm f1.2 (Auto Focus) TTArtisan 25mm f2 (Manual Focus) Vivitar 56mm f1.7 (Auto Focus) (I half wonder if the 21mm f1.2 lens was a mistake, was using it for the first time on Christmas Eve, and it was a lot bigger and heavier than I imagined! Perhaps a bit too much so for the little X-A3? Maybe I should have got the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens instead)1 point

There’s also still a couple LUMIX S9 bodies on the Japanese auction sites I frequent. Good deal, open box for around $925 after the 10% off sale. It was tough to choose between the X-M5 and the S9. The S9 feels like a really good buy if you get it below $1,000. I want to play around with the X-M5 though and figure they may end up becoming hard to find where as the S9 will probably be available cheap in the coming months. The only thing I’m wondering about is the lack of IBIS on the Fuji so we’ll see how it handles. If I don’t like it I’ll sell it and get the S9.1 point

I picked up my really nice copy for $250. They list at $1,200 or so these days and yeah… I wasn’t about to pay those prices for one. Couldn’t believe I got it for such a low “buy it now” price but it worked out I guess… I’m also building a Yashica set of lenses built at the Tomioka factory and the 55mm f/1.2 was kind of mandatory for the set. It’s a pretty sweet lens and f/1.2 was somewhat rare back then and quite expensive even at the time. Radioactive glass I think, I haven’t tested my copy yet but it has the gold glass with age now and either the Thorium or other rare earth elements give it quite the warm tone. it’s rare and collectible and also a good lens but I think just optics alone places it at something under $750 or so maybe? These days it’s tough to say what something is worth on performance alone, just look at Canon FD prices… The rear element goes right to the edge so they are always getting chipped or cracked on the back end. Might be another reason why they are becoming rare.1 point

An interesting example of what's possible with AI now in the hands of a talented film maker. Every shot of this film was done via text-to video with Google Veo 2. It took thousands of generations to get the final film, but no VFX, no clean up, no color correction has been added: everything is straight out of Veo 2. All sound design, editing, music and prompting by Jason Zada. But remember, people shouldn't be looking at where we are at currently. But rather they should be looking at the trajectory. What could AI video generation do 25yrs ago vs 10yrs ago vs 5yrs ago vs 3yrs ago vs 18 months ago vs 1yr ago vs 6 months ago vs today? It's very rapidly improving! We're doing today what was utterly unimaginable a few short years ago. What does that mean for tomorrow, or six months, or three years or six years from now?1 point

I think the significance of this camera extends far beyond whether you actually want it because it doesn’t tick every box for you. That significance is being able to say to other manufacturers “OK, now why can’t YOU do this for $799?”1 point

By 'pro work', I mean more full-time content creator or wedding vid etc, ie gigs where the camera/kit is either unseen or no one cares. But yes, turn up to shoot an ad or something when the norm is an Arri or a Venice etc, yup, might be a tough sell! You also have hit on one of the beauties of small cheap cameras and that is you can have a set of them, each with a prime or different function rather than lens swapping. I did it myself for a few months after shooting an entire season of weddings on the OG X100 with the following year having a pair and shooting one with the wide convertor and the other with the tele so approx 28 and 50 in FF terms as opposed to just 35 the year prior. Actually, it was a year or so later as I did that thinking about it with the S or T model which were quite a bit snappier. For stills work, I would comfortably do the same today with this new Fuji. I choose not to, but I could and that tiny camera approach does have a lot of appeal...just not more than my current Goldilocks approach of 61mp 28-75 and 26mp 42-112 at a turn of a dial. The Sigma 16mm and 56mm f1.4 spring to mind... These lenses are available under 300 used and a pairing such as this at 24 and 85mm f2.1 DOF equivalent, would be excellent and paired with something like the XE4 or X-S20, would easily be my pick over the X100VI. The only thing they don't really have is the leaf shutter and ND, but IMO, swap that for range. There's so many options these days, we're spoiled really!1 point

Depends on how you define "prosumer", but arguably when we're being given 6.2K @29.97fps in 10-bit (with 12raw output too, and anamorphic support!) then couldn't you say the release of the X-M5 is indeed supporting prosumer shooters? I kinda think it is. I had been thinking if I buy a new camera next year (highly unlikely, but always possible) it would probably be a cheap Sony FX30. But perhaps this Fujifilm X-M5 is worth a look? Especially as it would be priced substantially cheaper than a FX30. Heck, for only a hundred bucks more you even get a handy 15mm to 45mm zoom lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1855426-REG/fujifilm_16900771_x_m5_mirrorless_camera_with.html I guess the lack of IBIS and TC would be the biggest two negatives for me. And perhaps the overheating. But.... https://petapixel.com/2024/10/14/fujifilm-x-m5-first-impressions-a-surprisingly-powerful-little-hybrid/ "If you need to record for long periods of time, you can shoot a long-play mode which still has the 1.18x crop but should dramatically extend record limits and avoid overheating. There are two screw mount brackets to allow the attaching of the Fujifilm cooling-fan unit if overheating needs to be more acutely avoided with the intensive record modes." Handy! I feel Panasonic has abandoned a little the MFT market underneath their flagship GH7/G9mk2 We used to have the "Gx series" (G3/G5/G6/G7) that were solid budget options. But the G9 changed that, being a flagship camera. And the G90/G100 just don't cut it in comparison. We need a "Panasonic G7mk2"! Fujifilm's X100 series cameras have been massively popular. This new X-M5 with a pancake lens is the perfect camera for everyone who can't get their hands on an out of stock Fujifilm X100V or X100VI. Or heck, this X-M5 is also perfect for everyone who simply can't afford a X100 series camera! Because a Fujfilm X-M5 with a TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 autofocus lens is still a lot cheaper than a X100VI (heck, get a TTArtisan AF 56mm f/1.8 autofocus lens too! You're still a lot cheaper than a X100VI) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1732752-REG/ttartisan_af2728_x_b_af_c27mm_f_2_8_lens.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1815332-REG/ttartisan_af5618_x_b_af_56mm_f_1_8_lens.html1 point

X-M5 New Fujifilm Creator Focused Camera
Ninpo33 reacted to Marcio Kabke Pinheiro for a topic
Came here just to put this link, heheheh Will try this Arri Log trick in my X-S20. About the X-M5 - dismissed it because it have no EVF and IBIS (and I have the X-S20, that have the same internals). But this damn thing is so cute and is the 1st Fuji with a very competitive price launched in a long time (looking at you, X-T50), that I'm tempted. And compared to the camera that is its competitor, the Sony ZV-E10 II, apart from the AF, it is better in almost every aspect. And cheaper. Very good move, Fuji. Now bring me a X-E5 with IBIS, EVF and a 40mp sensor (for stills - the X-S20 is MUCH better than the 40mp models for video).1 point
