Panasonic's "drastic surgery"
John Matthews and one other reacted to ac6000cw for a topic
The LX100 & LX100 ii also had it for stills (different aspect ratio crops out of 16MP & 20MP m4/3 sensors, but none gave you the full sensor area).2 points -
Giving them the benefit of the doubt - as CVP are not usually into the breathless hyperbolic nonsense- it is the greater flexibility of the Z mount over the RF mount that opens up new paths for more people to move into RED. Both Z and RF can adapt EF with AF but the Z offers the same with F, E and even Leica M with adapters. Stretching a point, even manual MFT lenses can be used with the K-X via an additional cheap E>Z adapter as most of them will cover Super35. That’s a lot more existing lens collections that people can use and could tempt more people in who have been reluctant to lock themselves into RF. But, yeah, whilst it’s very interesting (a compact cinema camera with compact M mount lenses with AF for example) and a more flexible option, it’s not really in the “this changes everything” territory. Changing the mount AND a price cut further towards PYXIS territory would’ve been though !2 points

Cool that Reds will now have the most flexible lens mount on the market! I suppose that opens up a ton of Sony E mount options too since there's an adapter for E->Z. For most of the shoots I do, a 28-135 on the K-X wouldn't be ideal - but if you don't need anything wider than 37mm FF equivalent, it'll probably look great. For affordable zooms on an S35 camera, I still can't think of any that I'd rather have than the Fujinon MK's. I finally picked up a used set mid-last year (along with a kit to replace the E mount with RF) and I've been delighted! The 18-55 has barely been off my K-X since then. With A Z mount and the E mount adapter, there's no longer even a need for the RF conversion!2 points -

There’s a rumor that the S1Rii that might be announced next week and will have a different sensor that’s in the SL-3. Will be interesting to see where things fall with LUMIX moving forward in 2025. Maybe this is the shift away from the previous partnership? I would love to see Sony give up the 50mp sensor that’s in the original A1. Get a $3,500 version of the A1 from LUMIX here soon? Yes please.2 points -

Yeah - I saw that they're releasing a firmware version 2.0 with that. It remains to be seen - they sort of pulled a Fuji a while ago by releasing some firmware that they complained improved face detection AF. Then some YouTubers tested it and declared it "fixed" or "better." Then everybody else used it and collectively agreed that it isn't usable. I'm sure those same YouTubers are really pumped now about how 2.0 will fix all the stuff they said was fixed in 1.2.5 (or whatever the version was). 😅 Anyway, control of the mount can only have so much to do with whether they can detect a face in the screen and correctly use PDAF points to focus to it, and then stick on it and not jump to other stuff or the background, etc. It might have a bit to do with smoothness of the rack or whatever, but my complaints about bad AF are much more in the category of "why the fuck did it jump to the background and stay there instead of on the face that never left the frame?" and "stop pulsing, you're not CDAF." It's hard to imagine that's the fault of the lens mount, but... I suppose we'll see! Not strictly only rumors - the Megadap guy shared a picture of one he was working on - but as you said, there's not really been anything since then. Hope springs eternal, though! At least for now, I have focus gears and DJI lidar to give AF to my M lenses. As you said, they're pretty different. I'm not likely to give up my K-X or my Komodo if I get a cine 12k - and definitely not my Ronin 4D. They all complement each other and I'd be apt to use various combinations of them on short film shoots. It's hard to say. Apparently their recent financial results were pretty bad. The big question is whether they will want to keep the extremely high margin, but smaller customer base of Red or if they'll drop the margins in the hope of higher sales. My guess is that they'll keep Red as a halo brand with high prices and dedicated cinema bodies - and that we'll see Redcode RAW on upcoming high-end Nikon-branded mirrorless bodies, as well as the SOOC colors converging between the two lineups. It's a strategy that works really well for Canon so Nikon might want to emulate it.1 point -

They contained MFT sensors, but never used the full area of it (I owned an LX100 for few years) - see the interactive graphic here: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx100 It's the same basic idea that the GH2 used (which had an 18.3MP larger-than-MFT sensor, with a maximum of 16MP used). On the LX100, the highest pixel count aspect-ratio was 4:3 giving 12.7MP out of 16MP:1 point -
Right now, I think the very best camera monitor (if you don't need a recorder) on a low budget is the Viltrox DC-X3 (or DC-X2 if you don't care about SDI), which is super cheap on Aliexpress. I'd take this over anything you mentioned.1 point

Maybe the Sony 18-110mm cine zoom with an E to Z Mount adapter? They do. At least two big factors: 1) there are a tonne of Sony E Mount users, now they can very easily transition over to RED 2) Nikon will bring better AF to RED than Canon ever would have1 point

Canon is expected to announce the V1 compact with 16-50mm (FF equiv) lens and 1.4" sensor before CP+. We will soon see Canon's take on this.1 point

The first Z mount RED cameras have been released. There is also a bundle with the new Nikkor 28-135mm Power Zoom lens for under $10K. Not sure how appropriate that full frame lens is focal length wise for a Super35 camera like the Komodo X but here we are. https://www.red.com/komodo-x-z-mount-black?quantity=1&kxzpackage=21 point -
What is Lumix thinking?!

I think if you use some deductive reasoning it is easty to guess the specs. Chris Niccolls posted on Insta Stories of the camera, so it will share the same body of the S5IIX It will be high megapixels...that is a fact...which means at least 8K shooting. Since every single camera from Panasonic has had opengate...you can guess 8k Opengate If it can do 8k opengate, do the math, it can probably shoot downsampled 6k + 4k. It is an RII series, so most likely no Internal ND's.1 point -

No, because neither of those give you a larger sensor, just different aspects (via cropping from the full image circle). With an oversized sensor you can do different aspects without cropping out any of the image circle. I think it was the GH2 that had a slight version of this, not as large as full APS-C but it was a few mm bigger than a typical m4/3 sensor. I wouldn't read that far into it. Panasonic has always used sensors from a few different suppliers. The S1R sensor and the newest m4/3 sensor (GH6, GH7, G9ii) are supposedly not from Sony.1 point -
No there are zero compatibility issues with Sony Slog and Davinci. FWIW Sony were the first to introduce log on a mirrorless camera so its supported in every NLE. FX3 is super compact so ideal for confined spaces like a car. Reason I recommend it is that the FF 12MP sensor is optimal for low-light situations with a second base ISO of 12,800. Other strong points is super low rolling shutter (great for fast run & gun), IBIS and cine features like shutter angle and in-camera LUT support. And it comes with an XLR handle. Oh and The Creator was shot entirely on it so yeah its pretty legit even on the high end.1 point

Yes it is mostly about cost, and weight/bulk. I'm no longer shooting for money and my financial position is not nearly good enough to justify keeping ~$6-7K of kit for personal shooting, when I think I could probably be happy or at least satisfied with ~$3K worth, and put the rest into savings/retirement. A good chunk of my shooting is also in fairly risky scenarios, and I guess as I get older the idea of a ~$3-4K body with $500-1,000 of lens and rigging on it getting smashed or stolen is increasingly less appealing than risking a $1200 body with $50-500 on it. I'll definitely be happy about heading out the door with a 20lb backpack on instead of dragging a 35lb Pelican! We'll see. I've started buying the m4/3 setup, and am going to sell off the L-mount stuff I haven't really used as much first. Maybe the GAS/shiny new toy instinct will take back over, but I like to think I'll be able to continue being an adult about this 😄1 point

I would not expect to see any real world difference at all between a 45mp FF sensor and a 61mp other than in the most extreme of crops and pixel-peeping in direct side by side tests, ie, 'fuck all'. When I went from Fuji XT3 to OG LUMIX S5, I noticed a marginal difference. I could not have told you in words what that difference was except other than the raw files were a bit 'cleaner' and had a little more latitude? Then going from OG S5 to S1R, I noticed immediately another 'jump', but this time it was more to do with detail as should be expected. Then I went back to 24mp FF for the best part of a year before going to Sony A7RV and I would not call it night and day, but the clarity and latitude in the Sony files is on another level to LUMIX/Nikon 24mp files. After shooting most of last year with the A7RV (and I am talking purely stills here, not shot a single second of video with it) I went back to dabbling with some 24mp FF and they were definitely lacking compared with the 61mp sensor files from the A7RV. So I would expect any 'S2R' to be as equally 'ahead' of any 24mp previous or current gen LUMIX camera and that is one of my 'deal-breakers' for me to chop my A7RV in to get one. And ideally, multiple crop markers as per the current FF LUMIX cameras because I want to shoot in 3:2 aspect ratio with a 2.4:1 and a 9:16 overlay with every single frame. And 61mp, allows me an APSC crop with a 26mp file, with marginal more detail than a FF 24mp file. A 45 or as in the old S1R, 47mp, is about 18mp which was and is OK, but I'd rather have more so I can get the Sigma 28-105mm f2.8 as a genuine 'one & done' lens.1 point

I also would not be and am not jumping off the good ship L Mount until we at least know what is coming. Or not coming. I guess it depends how invested you are in the system though and how well it is working for you… For me, for video, boxes ticked. For stills, not quite as things stand. On this video centric forum, an S2H will be of more interest and I am interested, but at this time, think it an unlikely purchase for myself. 1/2 price Leica SL3 however, almost certainly ticks the photo need box.1 point -
Strange time to go when they are supposedly only a few weeks away from announcing 2 new cameras. Maybe it would be better to wait a few weeks more and see what they are going to release? Although if it's about weight and cost then fair enough.1 point

It's not the lack of releases that is the issue, at least not for me, it's the lack of communication. They don't need to be like Sony, who releases a new camera every time there is a minor upgrade that could've been released as a firmware update. In fact I'd prefer they don't! But simply giving people an idea on what is in the pipeline would sure be welcomed. Tell people that S1, S1R and S1H successors are in the pipeline and give people a little meat to chew on. There's no reason not to, especially when the user base and many in the industry are nervous about the company's future in the marketplace. The silence reminds me of period between the GH5 and the announcement of the GH6 and why I moved on from M43 to begin with.1 point -
Maybe, but... Is for me anyway, my gripes against the S5, the S1H and S1R. To be fair, they were and are OK in most situations, more photo than video, but it was the forward tracking on video where I struggled. And the size/weight was a bit more than most wanted but actually not a deal breaker for me. With the S5II, they solved all of that...except according to some, at the expense of outright image quality. I am not seeing that myself, but probably more because when I switched from OG S5 to S5II, I also switched lenses, filters, from editing with a LUT in post to shooting with a LUT baked in, in camera and from 4k 50p to 6k 30p. The S1H is still my favourite video camera of all time except for 2 factors: 1. The AF tracking. 2. Cannot bake in a LUT and so does not fit with my workflow so was replaced with another S5II. For stills, I switched from S1R to Sony A7RV and it's night and day better IMO. Marginal in IQ if we are talking web and social media, but when I am editing stills images, a positive difference. Could also be the lenses...and my heaviest combo in that regard is a whopping 1kg lighter in hand!! But principally, it's the entire experience from the size & weight, through speed and accuracy and then the actual editing and IQ. I'm still on the fence whether I will go for the S2R/S1RII or whatever it may be called but the rumour mills are adamant it is going to be announced in a few weeks and if we get wind of more than a few being in Norway around this time, that might have been the likely place for the influencers to have gathered as a couple I have noticed of LUMInati have just been there for 'something'... My fence sitting is purely down to the A7RV and the 3 lenses I have for it. Combined, they are the near perfect solution for my stills needs and the only thing missing from the lineup, is a dedicated fast aperture low light AF lens and I have held off on that until I know whether I am going all in on L Mount (subject to that S2R), or sticking with Sony. Head says Sony. Heart says LUMIX. Wallet says either.1 point

Multiple businesses? Yikes, hope that does not include LUMIX. True, but it's also not unheard of for massive company cuts to come out of the blue. The people inside LUMIX might have already seen the writing on the wall for the last few years and thus were trying their best to boost their financial stats with a slimmed down range, but will it be enough for survival? I guess we'll see how 2025 goes. Yikes! If we saw an A7CR with an L Mount and a red dot, then that would be big scary writing on the wall indeed for Panasonic.1 point

Oh and Leica also have a range of APSC lenses don’t they and until recently had a range of bodies to suit… OK, I must have been having some kind of brain fade when I commented the other day. However/so, the S9 makes for a brilliant APSC lens platform/camera system then! I even have mine right now and since it arrived with the Sigma 18-50mm on it 🤦🏻♂️1 point
