    What is Lumix thinking?!

Nope and if it was not for the lack of decent AF, peak video camera for me. Yes I wish it was 10% smaller & lighter and I wish they had been able to update it to have the firmware features of the S9 and S5II, ie, the ability to burn in a LUT and multiple frame markers. Whether it was possible or not, I wish they had ‘simply’ made an S2R and an S2H using the S1H body and simply called them the S1Rii and the S1Hii. I suspect that unless they really knock these next releases out of the park, they are cooked though. They just do not seem to get it and that is great product + good marketing = continued existence. Anything less is death. It never ceases to amaze me how some brands with real heritage are simply run into the ground. Panasonic LUMIX does not have that and I am thinking companies more like Olympus and Kodak. You have to be an utter fuckwit to take such heritage and grind it to dust.

  2. Sigma being Sigma, I think it might well be a bit more niche. My feeling for a while is that the struggle they've had with trying to make a FF version of the Foveon would lead them to producing another APS-C version of it as a stopgap. With Leica leaving the APS-C arena, it leaves a whole market wide open for them to step into it with a stills only body (CL/TL owners were never arsed about video) that they also have a great range of lenses for.

  3. I'd love to see an fp Mini, an APS-C camera with IBIS and decent AF. That could be interesting, but it would be tough competition with the S9 unless it has a EVF and proper shutter. Now, I'm just dreaming. :-)

  4. There are actually 22 cameras as the S5D needs adding to the full frame count and the Leica T, TL and TL-2 to the APS-C count. There has been a 23rd camera announced which is still yet to actually hit the shelves yet which is the Lumix AW-UB50 box camera. Of course, its stretching a point a bit with the T/TL/TL-2 as they have been discontinued but then again so has the CL, which means there is no currently produced APS-C L mount camera. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see Sigma fill that void.

  5. FYI: There are 18 total cameras in L-mount- 17 are Full-frame and one APS-C. There are 2 box cameras and one gimbal. It would be great to see another APS-C from anyone. Even better, I'd like to see where DJI might take the system. I suppose Sigma, Blackmagic, and DJI are just waiting to see what Panasonic and Leica are going to do in the end. The intriguing one is Sigma. I think they've said the fp and fp L were largely failures for them, but don't get the impression they're giving up.

  7. I rarely watch reviews of anything these days unless it is for something I specifically need or want. There is just too much hype and often complete BS with every new camera launch these days. Most of it just seems to be talk for the sake of talk, (a bit like some of my posts on this forum…), ie, ‘content for content sake’. Looks aside, this new OM camera based on specs looks very overpriced to me, especially compared with what else is available. Other than for folks determined to fit a square peg into a round hole.

  8. I think I’d struggle to trade my A7RV for an ‘S5R’ as it would be a downgrade in pretty much every way. I think in terms of outright build quality, my A7RV is a ‘bit’ better than my S5II, but there is not much in it. Everywhere else, it’s an easy win for the Sony. I’d still rather use the S5II for video which is why I have a pair of them and now an S9, but for stills, nah, A7RV. Easily. If the new LUMIX is not going to be at least equal to the A7RV, it would be a step back for me and though I would prefer all my kit to be in one system, it would not make much sense to switch. But I am withholding final judgement on that because it may be something more than the rumour and speculation so until we actually know…

  9. Yeah, I just don't feel like there's a unique reason to continue with Panasonic any more. For Micro Four Thirds, the OM-1 was the peak in terms of offering something different and fun vs the usual full frame work tools. For full frame, L-mount has gone backwards quite frankly from the S1H. Can anyone really say that after nearly SIX years there has been another L-mount camera that's better for filmmakers than the S1H? S5 is just a bargain bin version by comparison. S5 II had a few nice new features and the edge of affordability / phase-detect AF.... High-frame rates on the GH6 and GH7, a nice small full frame camera with the S9, but none of them are overall BETTER in every way than a 6 year old Panasonic S1H. And this is all rather disappointing because Panasonic are not supposed to spend 6 years going backwards. If it wasn't for my Sigma Fp-L I would have no L-mount cameras at all now. The SL2 is gone, S9 is gone, S5 II is sold and I just don't have any need for what it does compared to Sony, Fuji, Canon, Nikon and Olympus. This is why I think the problems at Panasonic are deeper than we think. I am a Lumix loyalist, a long-time early adopter and huge fan of what Panasonic did in the world of cameras, and not just with the GH2! To lose a customer like me is a very bad sign that they have fucked up.

  10. I hate to admit it but it’s true. The current S5 line up are all solid and super inexpensive workhorses but starting to loose whatever edge they had. I’m reinvesting in older LUMIX stuff now that things are dirt cheap but mostly looking towards Fuji and Sony for the future. I have 0 native L mount glass so it’s easy to adapt to whatever. if something cool happens next week I’ll reconsider. For now I’m shopping for Soviet Medium Format glass to finish my GFX friendly set.

  11. So LUMIX version of A7CR instead of A7RV type thing? I’m all for low cost and the market is trending towards cheaper cameras that’s for sure. I still would hope for a nicer A1 mk1 killer. just saw a clean A1 mk1 sell for $2,800 US last week so that’s going to be tough to beat. You’ve said it before, LUMIX really has to come up with something special to stand out in this current market. A cheaper 50mp $2,000 A7CR equiv might do that.

    Nikon buys Red?

That does, indeed, look great, but also... So rather than the handful of friendly influencers that have received the camera and done minimal tests, I'll hold off on judgment until I see it working on my own cameras (or since I'm 10,000km away from them right now, until there are real user reviews after the firmware is released to the public).

  13. Oh yeah can't wait to put a shitty Atomos on top of an OM-3. Amazing.

  14. I don't understand how you can call the S5mk2/X trash. Yes, the EVF isn't as good as the one on the S1 but it's perfectly usable (unlike the original S5's EVF which was poor). The camera is a superb all rounder that does things that others can't. I have 2 and when I have events where I need to film the whole event (hours long), I just stick an S5mk2 connected to XLR sound and record 4K for hours on end. The other shoot B-roll, interviews and photos. They are pro cameras.

    Nikon buys Red?

I suspect Nikon might not care too much about grumpy existing RED customers, if the lower prices increase the total RED sales revenue (and they sell expensive Nikon 'cinema' lenses alongside them). Nikon seem to be pretty aggressive on camera body pricing/value these days, and also seem to be taking video seriously as a way of increasing sales and 'market presence'. It'll be interesting to see what their next move is in the 'cinema' market.

  17. I have one for sale, complete with original leather case range finder everything. Fully functional and used only a few times and been sitting on my grandfather's shelf for decades.

  18. I agree it's overpriced, especially when looking at the market as a whole. However, it's one of one in M43 land (minus the PEN F, which is still expensive even used). I guess the Fuji phenomena has now carried over to M43. Over the past 2 years, I've seen used prices only go up at least 50% on the small M43 cameras of yesteryear. IMO, the reason for the pricing is most certainly to squeeze out every last bit of profit and also to protect it from being over-sold like the Fuji's. I think it will go down though, probably to $1799 within 6 months if it doesn't sell out too quickly.
