Panasonic Lumix S1R Mark II coming soon
John Matthews and 2 others reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Honestly not a bad thing it's 44MP, that's still a lot. And I'd rather they chase other photographic / video improvements than megapickles. It's ok for the S1R Series to not have internal NDs, but I will be a little mad if the GH8 or S1H mk2 lacks internal NDs. Nikon D7200 to Nikon D7500 dropped from 24 megapixels to 20 megapixels (well, 20.9MP). And they've kept it there ever since, with the Z50 mk1 and mk2 also being 20 megapixels. (even the Nikon Zfc and Nikon Z30 as well) There is a rumor towards it being called "S1X" which might perhaps cool off the complaints from photographers that it it is not a true S1Rmk2 with mega mega pickles for a sensor, while also being a name that's a nod towards it's top notch video capabilities. It kinda doesn't, but yet Panasonic is a niche player in what is itself a niche market, who are also trying to juggle maintaining two entirely different systems (MFT & L Mount) at once, thus they might be wanting to slim down their offerings to just a core three of S9 vs S5 vs S1X That's the dream! Or maybe Panasonic will just release a "Panasonic BS1X", which is an update to the BS1H (it's been discontinued?), that's simply stuffing all the goodness of the "S1X" into a box format camera with hopefully the extra goodies we wish to see (better implementation of SDI with zero delay, and built in eND, etc). Rather than releasing an entirely separate S1Hmk2 camera, which they might not have the R&D to support. Thus my theory/dream/hope that this is a new S1X, that merges the goodness of the S1R and S1H series together, then in six months time they release an updated "Panasonic BS1X" to replace the discontinued BS1H, which gives you everything you wanted, and is positioned in between a FX3 and FX6. Blackmagic PYXIS says hi. Yes, they have the pedigree and history, but no longer the dedicated broadcast/cinema division for it 😞 😕 Do they even still have the people to pull off a modern 2025 version of the EVA1 mk2 / Varicam LT mk2? Bingo!3 points -

First, "three single" is a silly phrase. Second, no. Any time somebody tells you "the single" or "the three most important" or whatever, they are talking straight out of their ass. I'd say that, for me, dynamic range is (often) more important than low rolling shutter. Correct skin tones is also important. Beyond that, composition, lighting, and any number of factors go into a beautiful image. Anyway, claiming that there are a small number of things that are essential to a beautiful image makes it sound like you get your information from YouTubers who post videos with names like "Cinematic footage from (insert camera here)" with slot motion footage of plants in their own backyard - and then they tell you that the secret to lighting the human face is to use reverse key lighting (can look nice, but it's one of about 100 ways to light a human face and have it look nice), etc. Lots of beautiful stuff was filmed on the 5D Mark II and that camera had, what is by modern standards, horrible rolling shutter and poor highlight rolloff.2 points -
Or the Sony ZV-E10ii with the PZ Kit Lens. A combo I must admit I am slightly interested in. Obviously, the Canon is for a different market and not for most people who frequent this forum. All in all, it's a solid release. Canon has been on a roll IMO. I must admit that I have been pleasantly surprised by the R7 I've been using lately. Not to mention the Canon camcorder. I know a lot of folks around here don't love Canon Log 3 but I think it's a very simple Log profile to work with. If the R6ii shot internal raw, I'd probably sell my FP and go all in on Canon. For totally different reasons, if Sony would give me an RX10ii (body/lens) with the 10bit from the E10ii, I'd be very happy. Or if Panasonic would release an FZ5000 with the internal ProRes... yes please!2 points

I might be in the minority but I don't mind the S5 body, though I do like the S1H body the most out of all the Lumix cameras I've used. My only two complaints about it really are the screen (I'd like the S1H screen) and the lack of lock that can turn off certain buttons that I'm accidentally hitting while recording accidentally.2 points -
My initial reaction to this camera was "actually thats really quite a decent package" and it is but I still find the FujiFilm X-M5 with its kit lens a more compelling option. OK, so the lens will make it bigger but not dramatically so. You can even just ignore the interchangeable lens option and just stick with the kit lens and pretend its the same sort of integrated compact. At the risk of opening up the floodgates in a "what have the Romans ever done for us" style, I'm not seeing much of an advantage with the V1 against that combo. And with FujiFilm's trickle out of production they are both equally unavailable in Europe too.2 points

It looks like 8.1K is real, as at the end of this video Zach says something along the lines of "by the way, all the talking head footage in this video was filmed in 8.1K... but you'll find out more about that next week." I really don't have a need for 8K, so that really doesn't excite me. Most of us aren't even really using 4K to it's max with our small TVs and computer screens! But I know others will be pumped.2 points -
Yeah, give us the EVA2 in L mount and all the updated spec!2 points

I shoot action sports (professional wrestling) with my S5II X and rolling shutter isn't an issue at all. I notice it, yeah, cause I'm a video guy, but no one watching it has ever commented on it or complained.1 point -
Although in a world of brutal honesty, I’d definitely be inclined to think that these options are realistically more than enough for my actual needs. Anyway, must dash as I’ve got more videos of the BM Cine 12K to distract me from making any actual material of my own with any of the 373 cameras that I already have in my cupboard.1 point

Is The Nikon Guy ok?
Emanuel reacted to John Matthews for a topic
I believe he had brain surgery a few years back. I don't remember what exactly the problem was. He's clearly fighting something. There have been others too on YouTube. It reminds me to make more efforts to eat healthily and take care of myself that much more. Life is so fragile. I send my good wishes his way.1 point -

It looks like Panasonic are trying to copy Sony and do a one-body design suits all as in case of a7 series. So looks very much like it will be in the S5 mould with extra buttons. It will be a pity if that means losing the top-LCD display. Styling wise, ergonomics wise, they seem determined to make something quite charmless.1 point -
Thank you, clearly it has been more than a year since I watched one of his vids.1 point

Canon V1 1.4” sensor 16-50mm
Marcio Kabke Pinheiro reacted to IronFilm for a topic
Looks like this Canon V1 announcement is basically the new Nikon DL18-50 which many of us wished for but sadly and stupidly Nikon cancelled their entire Nikon DL Series 😞 Canon is clearly targeting the vlogging market. Which means it must have an UWA lens. Got to sacrifice the longer end of the zoom, either that or they'll be forced to compromise in other areas: Weight? Price? Quality? F-Stop? I'd say sacrificing the telephoto reach was the right decision. Hopefully they'll do something like the planned Nikon DL Series (which had three different cameras, all based around the same idead of a premium P&S but with three different lenses for three different types of users), if the Canon V1 is a big success. Launching another camera for the non-vloggers which is 24mm (maaaybe 28mm) to portrait / short telephoto length, and a third camera for those who want a superzoom camera. (something comparable-ish with the never released Nikon DL24-500 F2.8-5.6, or perhaps like the Sony RX10 / Panasonic FZ2500 we have currently, but with a somewhat bigger 1.4" sensor) Awfully hard to use the EVF while you're taking a selfie.1 point -

Or a box camera with 1st party accessories to make it camcorder-like. Take a BS1H body, add a new side handle with full control, a single cable USB C monitor (or compatibility with Blackmagic's!), Panasonic's existing XLR module, and you've got a similar setup to a C400, ergonomically. All that's missing are ND's, which require a bigger body--not that I mind!--or some kind of eND adapter for EF/PL lenses. Of those, ND's are probably the only one that's particularly difficult to develop, if Panasonic thought they had the market for it.1 point -

Interesting indeed. Missed an EVF (but for the intended target is a no problem) and one or two proper control dials (you have one on the lens and one on the 4 way pad). The cooling solution is VERY neat. Let's see the stabilization, since it is OIS only (plus eletronic stab). But kinda surprised, is really a new camera, not a rehash.1 point -
Canon PowerShot V1– C-Log 3, Built-In ND & Cooling Fan
IronFilm reacted to zerocool22 for a topic
this is a pretty cool pocket camera. I never expected canon to come out with a camera specced out so good. Built in Nd Filters, cooling fan, canon log 3.. Makes me wonder why they didnt include built-in ND's into camera like the S5II, A7SIII and so on. And now all of a sudden a pocket camera has it. Some of the key features of the PowerShot V1 include: 1.4″ CMOS sensor Ultra-wide angle 16-50mm zoom lens 4K 60P recording Canon Log 3 Built-In Cooling Fan Built-in ND Filter (3-stops) 30fps stills performance (electronic shutter)1 point -
There's already a thread about this camera - https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/90124-canon-v1-14”-sensor-16-50mm/ I've owned at least two 'pocket' cameras with a built-in ND - the Pana LX7 and the ZV-1. I suspect they have them because making an iris that closes to e.g. F22 on a small lens/sensor is probably quite difficult (and they don't have filter threads to add an ND), so to maintain 180 degree shutter angle for video in very bright conditions means an internal ND is fairly essential.1 point

I suspect there's a decent market for an L-mount 'camcorder-style' body if they get the specs and the ergonomics right. Panasonic has the video pedigree to sell something like that, I think.1 point

Agree with all of this. I would also be really interested in what the next 24-30mp body (S1Hii or S1x or...) would be and I hope to-f it's not another many months before we have an inkling, but I'm not holding my breath. The S1 sensor is still incredible for how clean the files are for low-light or when lifting shadows with minimum penelty. Triple agree regarding no S5 body and the importance of ergos. Maybe quintuple agree.1 point

Can I introduce you to an up-and-coming forum with a vibrant photographer community - called DPReview? (joking, joking & no shade at DPR beyond being tired af at all of the knee-jerk anti-video sentiment - I've abandoned engaging the L-mount thread a while ago now...) I totally get it for your (and others) use-case and it's notable that your preference is supported by having three other bodies doing video specific things. On my end, the split between photo and video for paid work is so close to 50% (while closer to 65%+ of my income comes from video due to higher rates for video work). I'm rarely out there with two bodies when I'm doing hybrid work so, yeah, I'm looking for that all-around capable body that has more flexibilty (i.e. power) for stills, for its ability to auto-focus in lower light and with subjects with darker skin, and better video... great, yes. Keep my S1 body for two-camera shoots, etc. Edit: also, on the photo front, the rumor some weeks ago was that there has been some form of collaboration between Panasonic and Capture One that will be revealed with this annoucement. Could we FINALLY get tethering support between the two?? Desired/needed.1 point

Canon V1 1.4” sensor 16-50mm
IronFilm reacted to eatstoomuchjam for a topic
Pity the ND is only 3 stops, though that's the same as the ZV1/RX100 V. 6 or 8 stops would be better for shooting in direct sunlight, but better an ND filter than no filter. Looks like a pretty decent compact - basically Canon made the successor to the RX100 V that Sony didn't make.1 point -

It actually looks like a decent camera (in the ZV-1 sector of the market), especially as it has 4k60p, an internal ND and dual-pixel AF.1 point

Assuming the rumors are correct, it looks more like a cheaper R5 ii competitor to me. If it's intended to be a replacement for both the S1r and S1h, it'll be interesting to see what the rolling shutter performance is like. The Sony IMX366AJK sensor 'stephen' mentioned above is rated for 120fps at DCI 4k, 12-bit readout (I guess using 2 x 2 pixel binning with a vertical crop, as it's a native 3:2 aspect ratio), and DCI 8k at 60fps:1 point

One of the rumored specs says: mechanical shutter - 10Fps. Aha ! Here is what else more S1R II will have compared to Nikon Z8. It will have a mechanical shutter. Panasonic will get off the shelf sensor - IMX366AJK, while Nikon Z9/Z8 uses IMX609AQJ apparently modified IMX366AJK specifically for Nikon to have low readout times for photo, in fact lower than in video. I think photo users will like the mechanical shutter.1 point

We will have to see what niche Panasonic wants to hit. If they are prioritizing a fast sensor over a slower read 60+MP sensor, then you know they are going for high performance versatility. Of course, there will be complaints about "Panasonic abandoning photographers" in favor of good video specs, but that's not a lament we'll hear in this forum.1 point

Wow, this sounds extremely generic. Are you a bot? What do you mean correct skin tones? And have you ever shot positive film? Really huge dynamic range 😂 Regurgitating basic statements you’ve seen in the pseudointellectual “serious film making space” on YouTube like:“COmPoSitioN and liGhtiNg” is IMPORTANT, is absolutely void of any meaning in this discussion since I was talking about image quality from a technical point of view with regards to a particular camera, not an artistic and subjective one.0 points -
