  1. I think so but as a LUMIX, it has to have a gazillion video options. I get why most manufacturers believe they need to appeal to the broadest base possible, but at the same time, they miss the mark as a result. Personally, if I was Mr LUMIX, I’d offer 2 cameras at the same time and say, this one is the photo one and this one is the video one and both would be able to tread on each others toes a little, but would otherwise be clearly defined. Here though we have folks running 8k 1 hour plus tests and calling something a failure because it overheats. FFS, who needs to record continuously in 8k?

  2. It's really interesting to me that he and others have mentioned that they think it's the same sensor as the Ronin 4D 8K, but that camera has only 16ms readout in 8K with DRE off and 32ms with it on... so maybe it's a variant of that sensor? Otherwise, the video modes are bit bewildering and confusing. Good on Panasonic for making so many of them, but I think the average buyer is going to go crazy with all of the asterisks. "So the camera can record in 8K?" "Yes." "So I'll plug in my external drive and start recording?" "Well, sort of. You'll need to use external power for that." "So I need external power to record in 8K?" "No, just to an external drive. With CF Express, you can do it in-camera." "OK, great. So I put in my CFE card and I'll just go start shooting 8K ProRes RAW." "Well, no. If you want raw, that needs to be 5.8K and with an APS-C crop." "Uhhh, how much was that Z8 again?" Meanwhile, the EOS R5, released almost 5 years ago, is over here happily recording 8K raw internally to CFE without a crop. And yes, overheating and without open gate and about 18 other things that the S1R II can do... but c'mon, Panasonic, a camera released in 2025 should have a battery that's powerful enough to allow recording to an external drive in full quality and if you're advertising internal raw, it should be at full resolution, just like what the competition are shipping, and have been shipping for several years. Is it cheaper than the competition? I suppose that depends. Compared to the Z8 and R5 II? Sure. Compared to a used R5? Well, no. Anyway, as for the RS and the overheating, they both seem to be a molehill that people are making into a mountain. Is 24ms great? No. Is it fine for most people? Yeah, pretty much. Is it bad for a camera to overheat after more than an hour in its most taxing internal recording mode? If you need to routinely run 2-hour interviews with a single take, yes, then it is not the camera for you. If you are pausing even for a minute or two between takes, will you overheat? I guess that remains to be seen, but I'm guessing no.

  3. I think that pretty much agree. I also agree with Gerald Undone's comment that it should have a general no-oversampling/low rolling shutter option in addition to the normal/extended DR switch. The (line-skipped) 4k120p is around 8ms RS, so we know it's possible, albeit with less DR and less sharpness etc. But at the price (which will fall to sub-$3000 probably fairly quickly), it seems like a lot of camera for the money. If you want 8k video with much lower RS, go buy a more expensive camera...

  4. Ditto. In a moment of incredible self control, I have decided to pass. I think it's an upgrade over the OG S1R, probably... For video, yes, for stills, probably not much if anything in it. I was looking for and hoping for a 1/2 price Leica SL-3. This is close, but not close enough and the benchmark is my A7RV and the new LUMIX does not beat it. I'm not sure for stills it even equals it, but real world, there would not be so much in that. I've run the financials and it would cost me approx €1200 to go sideways with less focal range, albeit with less kit and be within one system, but there just isn't enough for me to make it happen. At least not at this time, but I will look at it again after this next season and before the new one at the same time next year. In fact, other than flipping my 3rd S5ii for an S9 and possibly getting a few primes for that within the next few months, I'm sticking with what I have and focusing on the craft this year as the tools are already good enough for my needs. I really hoped between LUMIX and Sigma, they would produce something for me to give up my A7RV, but nope, nothing yet. And I am far from being a Sony fanboi !! I am however going to do this 😜

  5. I've used all of those actually! I built a live streaming business with the Sony PXW-Z90 almost 8 years ago. It was the best option at the time, because of the SDI connection that we could output to our switcher. Originally I wanted to use GH5 bodies but I wasn't confident in HDMI or the HDMI to SDI process in a fast paced sports environment. Locking SDI to SDI seemed like the way to go. Plus every other mirrorless option at the time, minus Lumix, had overheating issues so they weren't an option. The Panasonic AG-DVX200 was also briefly considered, but at nearly $5000 each it just wasn't gonna happen. I really liked the PXW-Z90 at the time. Today though, it's not good enough in low light for event coverage, in my opinion. Today the footage LOOKs video-y, with poor colors, roll off, and dynamic range. They're still used by my old company, and for several other smaller pro-wrestling companies, and I just don't think the footage looks very good compared to what you can get from even a low end mirrorless camera these days. I rented a FZ2500 when I was considering it as B and C cameras to my GH5 years ago. Not bad, but the G85 bodies I was using were still better. Gimme a power zoom I can buy once and use on whatever new Lumix body I upgrade to in the future and I'll be a happy camper.

  6. Unless you're Matt's doctor, though, his weight is really not your concern. If he has health problems, it's up to him to decide if he'll talk about them or not. This thread was a lot better when it was trolling people about Dave Bautista and/or Perry Farrell. Let's focus instead on his lens reviews where he does a portrait shoot with it stopped down to like f/13 which will be diffraction limited on just about any modern sensor! Or on his thing where he has to bring 43 and 250 lenses in like 43 suitcases when he goes on trips! Instead of, like, a couple of GFX 100 II bodies and a decent selection of Fujinon glass! And if he really needs extreme telephoto, swap that out for any modern 61 megapixel body and the same focal equivalents as above + extreme telephotos. Or his pockets.

  7. Lumix releases a camera without EVF, hot shoe and mech shutter for 1.5K = "crippled". Sigma releases a camera with the above shortages plus the lack of IBIS, SD, etc for 2K = "innovative". A real example of it's not what you sell, it's how you sell it.

  8. If I had to guess, it's "try to stop the few photographers who are using Panasonic from jumping ship." At this point, almost nobody who is starting out is going to opt for Panasonic, other than as a value option - and those people are way more likely to go S1 than S1R II. Though even for those photographers, I'm not sure that about the same number of megapixels and vaguely similar IQ, but nicer (but confusing) video is really a "spend $3,000" sort of thing. So I guess I'm talking myself out of thinking that this is a good answer to that question.

  10. If you're talking about Gerald's review, he said "An hour and 18 minutes." (about 18:30 in the video)

  11. And boy, they spent in marketing this time. Even got some small youtube channels to Europe, and even in the hands of a (very good) photographer here in Brazil, which as far as I remember NEVER received a pre-unit to look (albeit him being a Canon shooter for decades).

  12. Well that’s not very good is it! And somewhat surprising as I have had my S5ii’s rolling for over an hour @35+ direct sunlight in 6k 30p. Never even had a warning. Very odd.

  13. I agree. It's a tool, it's a piece of design engineering and like all designs it's full of compromises necessary to get a product 'out the door' to meet a price target and make enough profit to make it financially worthwhile. Panasonic are basically in the mid-price, good value area of the market, so compromising on the sensor speed (of a hybrid targeted camera) to meet a lower price point than an R5 ii or Z8 seems reasonable to me. In any case the Z8/Z9 sensor might not be available to them, and the R5 ii sensor probably definitely not. It's a mid-range highish-res camera, not a high-end one. It's launch price is $400 cheaper in cash terms than the S1r was at launch in 2019, which means if you allow for US inflation of 26% over that time it's about 40% cheaper in real terms than the OG S1r - with much better video and AF performance, in a smaller and lighter body.

  14. If we look at S1R II as a photo camera with some advanced video features, then yes it is good. I would choose it over Sony A7R V. As a hybrid camera that can do both video and photo well it is not at Nikon Z8 and Canon R5 II level as those two have lower rolling shutter. Nikon Z8 price is the same, Canon R5 II is more expensive. S1R II rolling shutter at 6K and 4K 24p/30p is 23ms. Compared to S5 II (21ms) it is basically the same. Not interested in 8K. I am disappointed because was expecting similar to latest Canon and Nikon rolling shutter performance, sensor with faster readout times and improvement over the previous generation. Being also more at the video side I am not sure that 4K 60p and 120P are enough for upgrade. Maybe later when price goes down. I am beginning to realize that at this point in time only Canon and Sony as sensor producers are safe bet in the long run. Gerald Undone mentioned that Panasonic should consider giving as an option a line skipped version for 6K and 4K 24p/30p in order to improve rolling shutter performance. Line skipped 6K on a 4K timeline may look good. 4K 120p already does the like skipping apparently. We don't know what are the reasons for Panasonic to choose this sensor. I've heard before that Panasonic may not have access to all sensors Sony semiconductors produces. S1R II has a lot of nice features lets hope sales will be good. There is a more positive balanced review from Media Division. On at least one 8K and mostly static shots I already can see rolling shutter effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4_oyevhTc8

  16. This is one of those instances where it feels like Lumix is damned if they do, damned if they don't. They gave their high resolution stills oriented line a huge video upgrade, holding back very little, and it's still not enough to satisfy a lot of folks. This is a very capable video camera for a camera that is meant for still/hybrid shooters. The only thing that is unacceptable to me, and it's a very big thing, is the overheating.

Quick first impressions of the Viltrox DC-X3 Very nice build quality! Lot's of accessoires included. The NPF battery sits a bit loosely, not that it will detach, but when shaking the monitor the battery will rattle a bit. Probably not with every DC-X3. (And of course simple fixes for this) Scrolled through the menu a few seconds, screen seems nice and bright. Wondering however if my unit is really the amount of nits that it claims to be. The amount of guidelines for aspect ratio's seems very limiting? Just a few options, and no custom option if I'm not mistaken. Will look further into this when I have more time.

  19. Ever since my wife got GH6 I wanted 4k100p and 6k50p for Full Frame. After trying GH7 I bought her as a present I could have settled to that too, but could not quite accept it being marginally worse in low light than S5ii. I also wanted to try Raw, so Z6iii seemed like a perfect choise. GH7’s Prores RawHQ was also nice but at 3,5Gbps too heavy to store. Bought the Z6iii and compared it to S5ii and then traded in the rest of my Lumix kit for Nikkor 50mm F1.2. The 6k50p NRaw is IQ wise closer what I wanted. Though, with Noise reduction NRaw is just as heavy to edit than having a speed warp on S5ii 6k25p😆 Also with 6k even on 4k timeline having only 16-18GB of RAM will lead to swapping on M3 Pro Macbook. Still, Z6iii EVF is much better than what S5ii has, but IBIS is a bit worse. S5ii has slightly better DR, but in low light I’ve gotten better footage out of Z6iii.

  21. I think the name says it all. Specs aside this is the most « think different » camera from an engineering and UI perspective I’ve seen in a while. Very ZX1 reminiscent with the monolith design and aluminium unibody is right out of the Apple Johnny Ive MBP / iPhone 5 playbook. You gotta give it to Sigma for always bringing something different to the table. The Fp was already impressive with its compact solid construction and minimalist approach and this takes it to the next level. Personally I still prefer the modularity of the Fp-L with optional EVF etc but this Bf is stunning in an ultra minimalist way. Spec-wise it’s more a mixed bag but this is more form over function. It’s nice they gave us 6K and L-log but a real shame they took away video DNG Raw, especially considering it’s got internal storage. But I think this is more a premium lifestyle and photography oriented camera. Curious to know if it shoots 10-bit. Probably not because of heat management like the previous compact Fp’s..

  23. Yeah, Dave Bautista is just off steroids/HGH. He's almost 60, he doesn't need to be gigantic anymore especially if he isn't just focused on action roles. I'm sure he's still completely shredded without the excess muscle/bulk. Plus it's relatively easy to bulk up if he needs to for a role. I still think Matt has lost too much weight. He looks much older now than he did a year ago. He looks really healthy in that video talking about giving up drinking, vs. the video on the zoom lens.

  24. The S1Rii having strong video features to me isn't a sign that there won't be a more video centric camera released, but a sign that they learned from the S1 and S1R launch. Matching what competitors have out is part of it, but there was a lot of frustration on the release of the S1 and the S1R about the video features, re: paid upgrades for the S1 and limited video features on the S1R. Not only that, but we've seen everyone else releasing high resolution cameras with advanced video features in the years since. The market kind of demands it now. It does raise the question as to how they'll differentiate a new S1H from it, but I don't think it means they'll just not release one.

  25. Wanted to pop in and say: these are some of the best images I’ve seen of work from this forums users. Well done. And you’re right. It’s hard to tell. Can a trained eye tell? Possibly, but that’s not the point. (I’d love to get some insight to your approach to cinematography if you can spare it)

  26. Yes - a mere 4kg and 470mm long (and $6000!)... 😉 (but actually the 315mm long, 2kg M43 OMDS 150-400mm f4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO Lens is even more expensive - £6700 in the UK)

  27. The S10 af is much better compared to the X-T20 that I had. Since the X-T20 had PDAF and the X-A3 is CDAF only, yes, the S10 AF will be much better than the X-A3. And yes, the IBIS will allow you much slower shutter speeds (the Fuji IBIS is very good for stills, for movies I still think that it is somewhat abrupt) - but just remember that if there is any movement in the scene, it will appear as a blurry object. Never tried bigger exposures with the Fujis, but with my Oly E-m5 II in the past I could get 1 sec exposures handheld sharp images very easily.

  28. i don't think they necessarily do. not to suck my own dick too much, but here's some stills of work I've shot that I mostly like (and one i dislike). some pocket 4k, alexa and fx6 in the mix. some still have a lut on, some are graded by me, and some are graded by someone else with my intentions as a DP taken away. feel free to guess which is which and why, since i feel like you guys love doing that.
