  2. Forgive me because I've been terribly sick and am just waking up, but the rolling shutter only seemed really noticeable when dynamic range was on. For everything else it looked fine.

  3. 🤯 So some early doors impressions of the Nikon... It's been out a while so I won't get into the specs again. The overwhelming impression is that Nikon are mad bastards. It's as if they have taken the Z9 and gone... right let's make this better and reduce price by a lot. Everything about it I prefer to the Z9. The price, the size, the newer features and firmware updates since launch which I am discovering for first time since I sold my Z9 a couple of years back. Size wise, it's barely larger than my EOS R5. Weight is impressive given the slightly oversized body vs the Sony cameras. It feels chonky but light at same time which is a nice feeling. I am reminded how well the Nikon Z mount filter stack works at fast apertures. The manual glass I have like the Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 VM is like a different lens on the Z8 compared to the EOS R5 and Sony a7 IV. The glowing edges are gone at F1.2 and less fringing too. F1.2 looks almost as good as F2! I have gone deep into the menus and decided that there's absolutely nothing missing. The different levels of compression for both RAW stills AND RAW video is refreshing especially coming from Panasonic where's there's only ProRes RAW with very large file sizes or uncompressed Cinema DNG on the Sigma Fp-L. Nikon with the RED patent clearly will lead the RAW video codec race for perhaps the next 10 years or more. I want to do a comparison in 4K (where you can toggle between pixel binning / oversampling!) between the higher bitrate N-RAW and 700Mbit/s smaller file size N-RAW. Of course ProRes RAW is also in there. No mechanical shutter doesn't seem to be a problem so far and you can make it do a cute beep when taking a shot instead of a tacky fake shutter sound. Rather a quiet or optionally silent stills camera than one with a loud average shutter clack... although I will one day miss the 'feel' of a quiet mechanical shutter with a satisfying heft. X-H1, Leica SL2, GFX 100, to name a few. There are still a few mechanical sounds coming from the Z8. And one of them is actually quite annoying... It parks / locks the IBIS mechanism to save power / protect the camera every time you enter the main menu. It parks it with quite a loud clank and unlocks with a similar clank when it activates again. Wish there was a way to turn that off without disabling VR. The only other mechanical part is the sensor protection curtain which comes down at power-off, but you can choose whether to have that off or not. The EVF is enormous. In optical terms the best I've ever used. In resolution terms, perhaps not the absolute most detailed but right up there. Can you use it for manual focus at F1.2 without peaking? Absolutely. There's not this feeling you are looking through a tunnel. It's smooth, high contrast, a big FOV flat with no distortion. The rolling shutter appears to be a complete non-issue and there's no crop whatsoever in 4K/120p. Not tried the 8K/60 yet. I have a few 512GB CFexpress cards to test. Got a feeling I might need to go bigger. I am glad I resisted the tempting Nikon Zf. Only thing I am unsure about is whether the Z8 shares the same level of locked-down IBIS performance in video mode as the Zf, as that was quite incredible. Also tested the Nikon 28-200mm travel zoom which has been reduced recently to around 650 euros. I am surprised how small it is and how light. Sure, it's slow at f4-6.3 but it seems pretty sharp and nifty as a shot getter. The 28-75mm F2.8 Nikon Z is also incredibly small and light for a bright zoom. Not tried the Sigma ART E-mount range yet via the Megadap adapter but those are next up.

  4. Even an "ancient" Nikon D800 still does "good" image quality by 2025 standards. Basically for a number of years then stills performances have been in a plateau of at best gradual improvement in image quality. Eventually we're starting to see the same happen for video image performance as well.

  5. So much for me not watching reviews, but I am glad I found this which just seems a bit slower and more grounded. While there is a lot of similar ground covered from earlier reviews, things that stand out to me in this one are lots of great imagery and skin tone in a variety of lighting perhaps a slight over correction toward magenta? but no more of the greens that I am always pulling out of my S1 footage dynamic range gains are weighted toward the shadows and highlights need to be better protected when they are prioritized and fantastic color and noise stability when lifting shadows relative to prior S cameras (like shocking to me) don't use DRE with 8K for a sit-down interview.

  6. Once a fashion photographer told me, in a humorous way, that why he doesnt need high DR. The scene was a hotel room and half naked model was lying on the bed. He wanted the window, that has a view to a historical building, to be completely blown out, because "the facade of that damn building is sexier than my model". It was interesting to me that how much they're obsessed with viewer attention heat map in their frame, like they even plan for the eye movements.

  10. Democratization of videography introduced a group of people to the community who do. The expectations of a TikToker from a dedicated camera is obviously different than mine.

  11. Whatever the personal preference on the shots, part of the question for me would be whether that's a capture-time decision or a decision to be made in the edit/color grade. I tend to favor the latter. Best to capture a flexible "negative" that can be manipulated after the fact. As an example, I recently shot and then colored a short film with someone else doing the editing. The editor complained after my first color pass that it was too contrasty and dark. The scene is a tense scene in a hallway with a man in military gear guarding the rear while his comrades rush off. The light in the hallway is flickering and supposed to be faulty. For me, bringing the levels down and crushing the shadows (and yes, losing detail!) was absolutely the right call. The darkness and contrast help to convey the tense feeling of the scene... and flickering lights tend not to be strong! Anyway, thankfully the director/producer liked the darkness so we went with it... but the washed-out look seems really fashionable these days (and I'm not all that here for it).

  12. A comparison between Resolve and redcinex in handling of nraw would be great. Resolve has blue channel clipping issue, tho there are some half solutions for that, and redcinex support is still beta and has a bug as shows color noise in clipped highlights.

  13. More than making sense... It's like the refrigerator POV shots... Hitchcock once called it the cow's perspective when Truffaut asked him why there were no establishing shots for the trains with his movies...

  14. I still think that ETTR and trying to max out dynamic range leads to a worse overall look. It is one of the reason people complain about the colours on CMOS sensors and the flat tonality. The cinema look even in uncontrolled light is to prioritise what part of the shot is the most important. I really like my contrast Take the original Blade Runner for example, there would be no benefit in bringing up the shadows in this shot. The silhouette of the figure and the walkway is what the shot is about. So here 7 stops better than 14. In this one even though it's film the neon is blown out. There would be no benefit having an Alexa 35 here because if the neon mess behind him was bright colours and details it would be distracting us from the main subject. It is also supposed to look bright... because lights are... erm... bright Like the sun is bright. Today I don't know why people want to make lights look dark and shadows look bright, it makes no sense.

  15. This seems to be the case - that the S1RII needs a bit more highlight protection. The Ed Prosser video bears that out.
    1 point
  16. Or maybe not actually because although the parts outside the metal fencing are not blown out the entire back of her head is, and there's no detail in the hair. I would be tempted to prioritize the colour, detail and tonality of the inside of the barn and let the small bit of outside blow in a graceful way to absolute white, which looks like sunlight flooding in and would be quite nice.
    1 point
  17. Same here. It seems to me that at worst this camera may just need to be exposed a little differently than previous S cameras. I typically ETTR to get shadow details since the S1H and S5iix have great highlight detail. The S1Rii may just need to be exposed more in the middle knowing shadows can be boosted with little penalty.
    1 point
  18. Yes and lifting shadows is exactly the reason not to go 4 stops underexposed. I've seen shoots where they are trying to protect a highlight to the extreme and the rest of the shot is so noisy when they lift the exposure back up, looks like camera was at ISO 25,600 or similar. I also think that a high dynamic range look on an SDR display looks like it has no tonality. You have done a good job with the cow shot though. So maybe it's a moooooot point.

  19. This is the plan. I have shot some various formats today around the Tiergarten in Berlin... Most cinematic duck shot ever. Will upload later to a Google drive folder. I am very happy with it so far. There are a few quirks, nothing major. Finding myself nailing manual focus on the Voigtlander 40mm at F1.2. So the slightly lower-resolution EVF vs Z9 might actually help, as it has a bit of aliasing on the focus plane. The main LCD is sharp as tack. Mega detailed and bright. Small thing but you can't assign movie recording to the movie recording button. Better explain further... In stills mode the movie recording button acts as a func. button, none of the functions are to start/stop movie recordings in stills mode. So it's a good job it has that quick to reach stills/movie lever isn't it? Size is fine. Weight is barely any different to the Sony a1. I actually prefer the ergonomics especially in cold weather with gloves. Incidentally the a1 itself popped up later in the day on same shelf I picked Z8 from yesterday. For a good price too. It's a bit smaller, but it feels just that little bit more dated compared to the Z8 with just a little bit less charm. Still a damn good choice for under $4000 though.

    Nikon Z8 first impressions

I have the 40mm f2 on my Zf and it’s a perfect match. Toyed with all kinds of options but nothing so far beats it for me. But re. the Z8, it was a VERY close call for me choosing the A7RV over it and what won it for Sony was: Cheaper ‘like new’ used Smaller & lighter Bigger sensor Mech shutter Best rear LCD on any camera Native relatively compact Tamron lenses…because there is some distortion adapted with the Megadap. But I do like the chunk and the build of the Z8 and am so glad I did not buy your Z9 in the end Andrew because I think the size & weight would have become an issue quite quickly. And I work out 🦾 Not a lot between the Z8, S1Rii, R5ii or A7RV and I’d be happy with any of them…except RF glass is still somewhat limited and pricey so the least fave option. A pair of Z8’s with adapted Sigma f2 primes could be a very nice option though…

  27. Sigma have delivered a masterpiece here. Two main reasons: 1. This is a camera manufactured by adults in Aizu, Fukushima, Japan. In today's camera market it is very hard to find products manufactured by adults in free countries. Personally, I only buy adult-manufactured cameras. 2. There's no on-board surveillance system. The Sigma BF does not have WiFi or Bluetooth soldered to its mainboard. Again, something that is increasingly hard to find. It's almost as if points 1 and 2 might be connected in some way. Something to meditate on... Aside from that. This camera looks gorgeous. 純粋に天才だ。 Could it be that ethics, and integrity of corporate-action, results in integrity, and beauty, of form? Something else to meditate on... Sigma BF for professional filmmakers? Fascinated to know what the rolling-shutter is like on the Sigma BF for video. Will it be possible to enable a global-shutter feature for lower-resolutions? Even if global-shutter on the Sigma BF is only possible for 1080p, I'd consider shooting a feature-film with it. Potentially, the BF is a perfect camera for Ethics-First Film-makers. I could see this new Sigma BF being the improved-reincarnation of the legendary (and sadly discontinued) 16mm Fairchild BMPCC OG, and the Bolex D16. A tool for real-artists. If Sigma is listening: Is there any chance of finessing your masterpiece by adding global-shutter for video? Even if only for a lower-resolution readout. Regardless, あなたの勇気と勇敢さに感謝する。

  32. My hope, and it's very unlikely, is that Panasonic releases a video camera similar in shape to the C100. I used the C100 today and was reminded of what a joy it is to use. I don't know why Canon abandoned that form factor for their lower end cameras, but it really was perfect. Great to use handheld and on a tripod. It is interesting how worried people are about Lumix when the S1R II has had the opposite effect on me. I think it's the best sign we've gotten in years what Lumix's direction. Certainly though, they need to address those who are nervous about their future and should, as I continue to say, be more transparent and keep folks updated. I know that's not something big corporations tend to do, but they aren't in a great position and need to change the way they do things to reassure their users while also trying to attract new ones.

28mm f2 with 44mp sensor min for me. If it’s anything like 24mp it’s an instant no for me. It HAS to have good crop ability. To be honest, I don’t think even 61mp works for me based on what the Q3 can do with it’s crop modes. Fujis imminent fixed lens might be 100mp and then we are talking. ’Walk with your feet” is the line folks trot out, but that is not always possible. As has been said various times, cameras will continue to leapfrog each other and LUMIX cannot afford to bring out something that is not going to beat the X100 and Q3 it would inevitably be compared to. And they need to get their naming strategy right this time. Ladies & gentlemen, I present to you the LUMIX S Warship 1

For me it's all about reducing my doo-dads and streamlining operation. 1) Great AF 2) Great LCD/EVF 3) Built-in exposure assist tools 4) Versatile lens — I use the Samyang 35-150mm for event work. It's marvelous. 5) Quick transition from stills to video 6) Good battery life OR cheap small batteries OR both 🙂 7) A nice half cage and handle 8). Record button on the front or assignable to the lens 9) Wireless mics with small transmitters — PicoMic is awesome! 10) Open gate is nice BONUS since I can't stop talking about the S1Rii it seems. I'm excited that it has lower base ISOs so I don't have to reach for my VND as much, but it also has great high ISO performance for indoor, apparently.

    Panasonic Interview

@hoodlum Thanks for posting this interview. The more I think on it, the more dubious I am of a next S1H having a DSLR form-factor. If the S5IIx is the current video-heavy spec'ed body, and to differentiate from that in a "move the chessboard kind of way" that everyone is crying for, you would need better cooling for unlimited 8K/60p and then internal 32-bit float, internal ND, faster read-out, and the like. I'm not sure that the DSLR form-factor is the way to go. It just seems that a true cinema-spec'ed camera would be so much more efficient in a C80/PYXIS/FX6/what-have-you body ala a bigger BS1H/UB50 with repositionable EVF. Finally time for the EVA2? Again, what do I know about the market and how Panny is thinking about the choices it will be making, but I'm having a hard time seeing the S1HII that would essentially be an S5IIIx in this current mirrorless body.

  41. @PannySVHS@ita149 This guy has some footage to download in a range of codecs if you want to work with it a bit. I have and while there is not much, I am at least seeing there is no longer the need to pull greens out of the midtones, which is a standard proceedure for me with my S1 VLog footage. Curious what you see & think regarding the color smearing in skin tones. (Also appreciate that this might not be the best footage to evaluate that concern.) Edit: youtube video linked now! (sorry sorry)

  42. That's my take as well. If there was ever a chance to drop the slightest hint that an S1H successor was on the imminent horizon, this is exactly how NOT to do it. 44. There are some significant negatives on the Z8 versus the S1rii: No Open Gate No IN-CAMERA Live View Composite No IN-CAMERA Pixel Shift No Waveforms No False Color No IN-CAMERA 32-bit audio possibilities No anamorphic modes No anamorphic-specific IBIS Not great IBIS at wide angles No breathing compensation for Z-mount lenses The Z8 is about 100g heavier Maybe, they'll add some of these in a firmware update, but then again I'm rather certain Panasonic will also add stuff. These negatives were just off the top of my head, but I imagine there are more. The crazy thing is that the specs today are so good that it doesn't really matter all that much. All of the cameras will do; some just have a few more features than others. What sucks about reviews in general is that you watch them and you cannot help thinking that they are significantly impacted by how the company treated them in the past or present. Apparently, retribution is a real thing in the camera review business.

@Andrew ReidLooking forward to your experiences and impressions of the footage.

  46. Agreed. For a new camera you can't beat the value. It's not really fair to hold used prices against it, either. Is Lumix supposed to price it to match the R5 or Z8's used prices? I don't fault anyone that decides to buy those instead, but Lumix can't control that.
    1 point
  47. Some believe Panasonic is on the verge of shutting down, a narrative that a few users continue to push. I suppose their decision to release the S1R II instead of an S1H II only fuels that perception. The main criticism of the S1R II is its rolling shutter—something even Panasonic has acknowledged, advising those who prioritize it to choose a different camera. Essentially, Panasonic can't win. Pack everything into a camera, and it's too expensive. Leave something out, and it’s not "the very best." The real question is whether it offers good value—and, like most Panasonic cameras (new and used), it clearly does.

  48. LOL : ) OK, let's for one picture now... But I still recommend to eveyone of us to not defocus of that hinted by that guy above in that reminder there... No tools, no AI either (in a so difficult situation this business is) can overcome our own path to form the need other than our own asset: Our ability to create the market. With content. Don't let the audiences (or the channels, as aforementioned TikToks, YTs, etc.) push on our behalf, instead.* There's world outside social media. And the written form in these boards are the fine example of it. As many sensibilities and levels (layers, needs...) as colouful as human kind is. IIRC I recall to have read here in this same thread a couple of pages back and about a certain network, something like there's reality outside the current 2025 news trend (or narrative as it was written), that is, you didn't use exactly all those words in specific or that was the topic (more of it) but your readers are able to infer that from : ) I see it as really meaningful. OK, that guy didn't quote Ortega Y Gasset ; ) but I will now then and as he once said, we are our circumstances, for sure, but they should never overthrow us unless we let them play such part. This operates in lato sensu and in stricto sensu in many aspects of human life. In short, because context can be a bitch = ) we love all these tools (or a good part to each camera release... = D) but as we know, it's not there the main concern of our craft. Hope this helps as reflection of my own indeed, - EAG :- ) * In some other equation-form: sender (encoding) -> receiver (decoding) vs sender <- receiver (trading places, that is, along the process of encoding/decoding completely upside down...) ≠ sender <-> receiver (for some reason we've had Marvel... and a few partisans have respond with Anora as for instance... but do not blame me to go off topic here! xD)
