Every time I think I may be done with the Sigma FP, and think I need AF and IBIS, I mess around with some old footage... Shot with the 50mm f/1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar

  2. My latest fun-factor obsession is the Epson R-D1. It's the closet thing to a film-like shooting experience you can get on digital. As far as I know, it is the only digital camera in which you must cock the shutter manually... for sure it is the only digital rangefinder in which you must do so. Seiko made the automotive inspired gauges at the top, which are very fun. To me, it's the full, unapologetic ode to film cameras that Fuji wishes it could do. It's feeling very old at the moment though at 6MP and the images themselves aren't particularly spectacular on their own SOOC.

I’ve got a rental 28-45 arriving next week for a job (which is event coverage) that I’m looking forward to testing out. I’d be happy to report back my findings! I feel the same about the 28 and 40 focal lengths. And a lot of people complaining about its range don’t realize it’s almost the exact FF equivalent of the 18-35.

  4. It was great in so many ways. I watched it on VHS in the late '80s with a friend who had read all the books and knew the plot. I didn't so I had no idea what was going on but still loved it anyway. The sets and outfits were all very cool. I heard that Lynch was forced to have it edited too short for the story to fit it in to a movie time. It would have been great if instead of remaking it, they took the original footage and made a Netflix series, giving the scenes more time to breathe and maybe putting back any scenes or parts of scenes that had originally been cut for time. I have a friend who shortly after the film was out was in LA and went to a movie prop and costume sale. There were for sale the Freman outfits from Dune. He kicks himself now for not buying one.

  5. It's more depressing than embarrassing being American. Helplessly watching government institutions crumble one by one. Republicans have become the doublespeak party, talking about rule of law while favoring criminals, talking about freedom while banning parades, talking about balanced budgets while having the largest deficits, complaining about "mainstream media" from the largest broadcast company, and so on. And as much as Trump was the worst possible outcome, Biden being the actual candidate for so long shows that we have no one competent to turn to.

    Fav "Art" cameras

For me it's the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. That camera, and all the wacky c-mount lenses I used with it, was just so much fun to use and everything I got out of it looked so much better than it should have, at least to my eyes. I FELT like an artist using it, as opposed to a videographer. That was such a special sensor, and to this day I still don't understand why every camera manufacturer hasn't switched to a menu system like it (and the other BMD cameras.)

  8. That's a prime example, if you pardon the pun I know ultra sharp corners are a concern of the engineers, and all that... But the 40mm F2.8 EF Pancake costs 150 bucks and doesn't vignette. If you need sharp corners for landscapes, which you'd shoot stopped down 99% of the time anyway at infinity... then just stop down to F5.6 or F8. Sorted. No reason why the lens can't be an F2 or F2.8 on the mini GFX.

  9. I feel the same about the ZV-1 - I bought it mainly as a pocket-sized video camera, but I'm actually liking the stills from it more (I find the video quality is a bit so-so). Turning it on/off by opening/closing the screen is a great time-saving idea. I'm also finding the S9 + 18-40 lens quite fun - the limited amount of buttons and dials (and no EVF) means there's fewer decisions to make, so it becomes more of a point-and-shoot experience (and in traditional Panasonic style, you can set it up to shoot basic shutter-priority video when using the record button in photo mode - no need to operate a photo/video switch first). Almost the perfect hybrid for me.

  11. The community, overall, seems to really like the Canon EF 40mm f/2 pancake. I can confirm that AF works well (using Fringer) and it has really decent edge-to-edge coverage. I'm not sure, though, that it'd satisfy the 100 megapixel-peepers that the GF series tends to draw. (I say "not sure" because lenses for me fall into the categories of "too sharp," "pretty sharp," "a bit soft," and "coke bottle" - zero interest in doing in-depth lens sharpness tests)

  12. I hear you. And a year from now the S1Rii will have made me that difference in price many times over with much less effort than my current camera - an S1 that I bought new in the spring of 2019 that had paid for itself within months of its purchase. There just aren't bad choices. There are preferences. There are more optimal choices. But there really are not bad ones. I am very interested to see and read about people's direct experiences once the cameras are in hand and can make their own evaluations beyond interpreting the internet. The camera has compromises that I believe I'm willing to live with. I am psyched to learn along with others how to best deal with them.

  15. I was going to wait for a trade-in, but I found one in stock somewhere so I ordered it and it showed up today - so my "trade in' will be more of a "sale" to the store where I sent it - or at least, a sale + trade-in toward one of the media modules since their price is actually pretty competitive in terms of TB/dollar. So far, my impressions are "wow, it's chonky," "WTF do you mean there are no Arri locating pins on the top handle screwholes," and "wow, this camera gets warm." I'm running V mount right now since I don't feel like buying a series of expensive B mount batteries. The V mount plate supports 14.8v and 26v batteries. A YouTuber confirmed that the Nanlite 14.8v-26v V mount converter works with the camera so I grabbed one of them too. Confirmed that when I plug in my normal V mounts with it that the camera lets me choose fps > 60. I expect that it'll be a thing I keep in the bag for those rare times when I might want slow motion. I didn't even try recording it (and there's almost no way my media will handle it), but I smiled for a second when I set the camera to 8kp224 (2.4:1). That's more than any of my other cameras can do... in 4k. Anyway. I need to rig it better. My first stab at it is clunky and really back-heavy since I'm using two v mounts - the one on the camera to power it and a second Tilta plate with some d-tap and usb-c ports because when I plugged them into the main battery (A Smallrig VB212), the camera started to complain that it thought the battery was low (probably because of the voltage drop from powering the focus motor, handwheel, and Pyro-S). I have dinner plans tonight and tomorrow so it's unlikely that I'll do any test shots outside of the house + yard before Thursday (and realistically, probably this weekend!), but I'm excited to get out and put the camera through its paces.

  16. The whole time I watch it, I'm going to scream "but the rolling shutterrrrrrrrrrrrr" at my screen. What a bunch of incompetent filmmakers, using a camera which has either 16, 20, or 32ms readout speeds depending on which model and mode is being used! They ruined the whole show for everybody watching!! It's all anybody is going to be able to talk about!!! 😉

  17. I definitely probably have too many cameras...if that's such a thing? 😇 For work it's the following: Lumix GH5 Lumix GH5 II (hybrid photo & video work) Lumix GH5S Lumix S1 (hybrid photo & video work) Lumix S5IIX (hybrid photo & video work) Lumix GH4 (pretty much retired and up for sale) Personal/EDC/Fun Digital: Lumix GX9 (photo & video) Lumix GH1 (the very camera which won me best image quality in a EOSHD Forum challenge) Fujifilm X-Pro 1 (photo only) Film: Canon AE-1 Program Canon EF-M (manual focus EF mount SLR - I pair with adapted Leica R glass which I often also use for video) Konica Genbakantonku 28 HG Of course there's a couple of action cams in for good measure - GoPro Hero 4 and DJI Action 2. Finally the flying camera - DJI Mini 3 Pro

  18. Manny just released a video saying that he made a mistake about the noise is stiils. According to him, he made the comparison opening all the files in Lightroom - he found surprising that Adobe have compatibility on day one with the new camera. But Panasonic told them after that Adobe jumped the gun and the drivers were not optimized yet - and that he should compare in Capture One, because in C1 they worked together and the drivers were right. After he opened the files from Panasonic in C1, the noise problem was gone, and the files from the three cameras, bar from color differences, were "indistinguishable". In fact, what cought his attention is that the files from all the cameras were much better (color, details, rendering) in C1 than in Lightroom...

  19. I kind of agree with the original post in that we have lost something. But I also wonder if that "something" was the innocence of youth. I remember being completely immersed in the blockbusters of the 1990s as a kid. It takes a lot to even approach that feeling decades later. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. I remember watching Phantom Thread (2017) for the first time. I was completely immersed by the understated beauty of the visuals. When I looked to see what camera they had used, it was Kodak Vision3 200T and 500T. That being said, I've generally been ditching the multi-node grading workflows of Resolve in favor of simple global adjustments in Premiere (my native platform). No windows, which were not readily available in the days of celluloid. The resulting images have an honesty to them and don't seem to by vying for anyone's attention.

  20. I remember when Apple made the Mac Pro in Texas because it had such a high price tag and massive margin they could afford the American wages for the factory. Same doesn't work with smartphones, consumer electronics, cameras, and so on. Not anything under $4k anyway. Imagine the number of people you need to build 2 million smartphones a month? Wage bill if they are all on $50k+? I think the only intelligent American is an embarrassed American at the moment. I feel for them. The amount of people who have been hoodwinked by propoganda, Fox news and social media is incredible. And the rest of the world is just angry. The UK, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and so many others are allies of the US. We are being treated very very badly. But that's not really surprising if you read the Christopher Steele report into Trump's Russian holidays, with FSB filmed prostitute Kompromat, golden showers and all the dodgy dealing.

  21. There is no support (currently at least) for USB-C recording on the Ursa Cine 12K. The situation for CF Express Type B has been clarified by BM on their latest support bulletin here for approved cards : https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/support/faq/59051 Long story short is that they have nothing on there that goes above 45fps at 12:K 3:2 BRAW 8:1. There is a data calculator on the product page for the different permutations. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/blackmagicursacine However, there is also the caveat that for any frame rate above 60fps (at any resolution) the camera requires powering from a 24.8v B-Mount battery. So for anyone looking at shooting at the highest frame rates and resolutions, both the Media Module and a B-Mount are non-negotiable so an additional £2K should be budgeted. That is still an almighty good deal for a camera with this performance though and I think the value proposition of the Media Module is good enough to mean it might well be considered an essential purchase by a lot of people anyway. One thing that I find intriguing is that BM list a mount adapter for Hasselblad HC lenses but offer no more information about it at the moment. I still have a set of HC lenses that are orphans after the demise of my H3D-39ii and I'm very curious about how they have managed to get electronic control of them. Currently, only Hasselblad themselves in their H to X adapter and FujiFilm (the original manufacturer of the HC lenses) in their H to GFX adapter have products that do this and whether it is limited to aperture control but also encompasses focus control is undocumented. I'm not saying that this compatibility would make me buy one but, bearing in mind it has a dedicated Stills button, then being able to bring back a collection of fantastic set of lenses (albeit with a smaller FOV) that work more or less natively with a 100mp body that also happens to shoot RAW video would be worth considering. I'm not being serious of course as that would be an insanely flimsy justification to buy one * * Note from wife - Yes he is being serious.
