  1. An in-depth look at the white paper and 1D X Mark III codec https://www.eoshd.com/2020/01/canon-1d-x-mark-iii-finally-canon-get-serious-about-dslr-video/ Certainly the best DSLR (note... "DSLR"!) for video on the market at the moment... But those file sizes are media costs are eye-watering for the 5.5K RAW. In region of $500 for 13 minutes. The 4K 10bit is more tempting and it's 60p, no crop. Still, it is in the wrong form factor... Needs to be in a mirrorless camera. I think the 1D X Mark III will be a great shot getter and sexy gimbal camera though.
  2. The gotcha is: IT'S A DSLR! Why shoot with a DSLR in the era of Mirrorless 10bit?
  3. I agree with those. My gear of the decade, off top of my head: Mirrorless cameras as a whole (E-mount, M43, X-Mount), we'd be really bored and stuck in last decade without those. GH1 / GH2 GH4 / GH5 Magic Lantern (Canon would be a 10-year non-event without it!) Sony A7S and A7S II Samsung NX1 The first Metabones Speed Booster was very exciting. Thanks Mr Caldwell. Sigma ART 35mm F1.4 was a breakthrough for the company and been on upward track ever since 5D Mark II / III (did a lot to popularise DSLR video) Panasonic S1H Fuji GFX 100 (totally niche - purely to show the technological progress in 10 years) Fuji X-T3 and X-H1 (great step forward for Fuji) Original BMCC (all down hill since then in my view) GX85, bargain of the decade? C-mount lenses revived for modern cameras Anamorphic makes big come back Leica SL / SL2... mmmmm yum Olympus IBIS tech...first and still the best Here are the camera companies that did the most 'good stuff' this decade... Panasonic Sigma Sony Fuji
  4. Very simple, it comes with all the instructions and a guide.
  5. Gorgeous shot that is mate. Lovely silky tones. What lens was it with?
  6. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/david-lynch-twin-peaks-virtual-reality-computer-game/ Seems to be an escape room style game experience Rather it was just a cinematic one where you watch!! Deeply immersive not sure about the game part, but an exciting move from Lynch if he ends up deeply involved in making it.
  7. Happy Christmas everyone. Anybody getting anything camera-related for themselves or family? I myself am tempted by a used Hasselblad X1D which is now down to £2400. Must resist
  8. Professional web surfers. Who made the rumours sites any kind of authority?
  9. Are those high-frame rate 4k modes letterboxed crop, or stretched pixels taller than they are wide - is that possible with Quad Bayer? Line skipped or binned? I don't see any mention of phase-detect AF on-chip, is that normal for it to be left out of the specs sheet?
  10. Wonder if the 60MP mode will be implemented for stills? Or just 15MP. No 8K, I take it.
  11. 1/1000 in low light - sounds like you need an absolute low light monster for that, and a faster lens than F2.8. Going to make it tricky and expensive to find something which works better than an X-T3 or GH5. Hard to find a telephoto faster than F2.8 for any system so you might want to look at what is going to give best results at ISO 12,800 and nails AF. I think a Sony A7 III or A9 might be a good bet. Canon EOS R not so much, heavy rolling shutter and not as good in low light. Nikon Z6 would be good and in some ways better than A7 III (120fps quality, better colour) but the AF in low light isn't as good as Sony's. Sony A6600 would have way too much rolling shutter so that's out. I would not disqualify the X-T3 if you put a speedier lens on it but depends on how much reach you need. Is AF important or are you doing manual focus?
  12. Good codec & colour & stabilisation - GH5 or X-H1 Run & gun with really good AF - Not those Maybe a Sony or a Canon, but then you make trade offs over other important specs (like colour, or 10bit, or stabilisation). You may not need IBIS for ultra wide lenses. Shake is not as noticeable at wide angle. Also IBIS tends not to play very well with ultra wide focal lengths - warping / distortion can be present. X-T3 with 18-55mm F2.8-4 OIS makes for a good run & gun documentary cam. The optical stabilisation should be enough for ya. Olympus E-M1 II with firmware update and their 12mm F2 is also a good bet. I'd avoid the EOS R it's a bit naff if you want 4K and wide angle due to the big crop and lack of good wide EF-S lenses.
  13. Yes it gives you much more dynamic range to exploit in post, compared to shooting a non-LOG profile, and it makes the footage LUT compatible, which is a big benefit of LOG as well.
  14. Banned Kimmy, the north korean bot.
  15. I was shocked to see the prices of the Panasonic S1 on eBay yesterday. Used ones are fetching just £1000 to £1200. Serious bargains for you guys. Not so promising for Panasonic, who have already lowered the price to £1700 new after cash-back in the UK, for instance. The camera started off at £2400 and I paid 2600 euros for mine. I am not too happy. This was literally only 3 months ago. Wish I had waited.
  16. They are a full pixel readout from the sensor (6K RAW), then somewhere in the image pipeline the RAW data is resampled to 4K. There is no line skipping or pixel binning on the sensor, so it is a very crisp and clean image. If you look at some of the stills cameras and DSLRs, they offer RAW stills settings (Med 4K, Low 2.5K, etc.) at lower resolutions too... So a similar thing happens on the Fp, but in RAW video mode, with no overheating or anything like that. Quite incredible. Premiere support for Cinema DNG is not good, don't bother with that, and either transcoding to ProRes or editing in Davinci will serve you much better performance wise.
  17. Not sure if this impacts the organic sensor, or just processors / chip making for TVs, other devices, etc. Wasn't the organic sensor a collab with Fuji? This bit of the article has me more concerned... "Panasonic CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga said earlier this month the company will "eradicate" all continuously unprofitable businesses by the fiscal year ending in March 2022 and focus on sectors such as batteries and other equipment for cars." Let's hope the camera business has been profitable these past few years.
  18. Has there ever been a more pointless increase in resolution? I found this video hilarious! In my opinion 8K's future lies in VR. Read the full article
  19. What you could do instead of being forced into a daily edit, is to simply convert the RAW to a LOG format, and archive the files on a 4TB drive for after the holiday. Or try SlimRAW transcode app. Uncompressed 4K RAW is always going to be challenging for travels and shooting a lot... It's meant for sparing use on an art project or short film.... it might even be better to shoot 10bit LOG when the next firmware update comes out because there are times when the sheer file sizes of RAW are just going to be a headache. In same way there will be times when an X-T3 gets a shot that the Fp's autofocus would be too much of a slouch for, but conversely times when the Fp will give you a wow factor that APS-C is too limited for. In terms of the stills I like the Fp as a gentleman's 'artist's tool' but one that is down to earth... practical.... taking it slow, not too showy. Bit like a Leica M, but way more flexible. In terms of the video I like how unique it is. A mini S1 with RAW. How great is that!! Cinema DNG 4K is real RAW, and it's full frame, and it's there on my SD card or SSD when I want it. I had the X-T30 briefly and it's a bargain. However, the X-H1 is so much more. The feel when you pick it up is amazing, really high-end, and ergonomically it's Fuji's best camera aside from maybe the GFX 100. The X-T30 feels REALLY cheap in comparison. I can nail manual focus all day through the EVF on the X-H1 even at F0.95, and I can reel off handheld shots as if it's on a tripod. For locked-down handheld shots the IBIS is even better than the best (GH5 / Olympus) You can tell the X-H1 was a narrow margin camera for Fuji and that they make more money on the X-T3... The way it is engineered, the springy almost silent shutter, the quality of the components is out of this world. It'll be a tragedy if it does not get an update in 2020 with the X-T3's sensor.
  20. We enthusiasts and pros are the success story of the entire camera industry. The entire DSLR filmmaking, and now mirrorless video revolution happened on a big downward slope for the a camera industry battered by smartphones. Now, with the not very passionate consumers gone, there's only us left...and now the central focus of ALL the camera companies, big or small. We are not a niche any more, and Nikon in their latest financial report expects enthusiasts, hobbyists, artists, filmmakers and pros to account for 90% of sales in the mid to long term. Going to write a blog post about that soon. We kept the passion up, when everybody else was losing theirs.
  21. RIP my Aussie friend. May you enjoy the afterlife and start filming that Clive James Postcard wherever that may be... Here is his incredibly dry and witty portrait of Berlin, one of the TV shows that inspired me to go there in the first place. I ended up spending nearly 8 years there. Clive James was huge in the UK and his programmes were a weekly must-watch for millions of British people. I recommend checking out everything he did - be it the books, which are fantastic, his poems, his TV shows and documentaries.... he's one of my all time favourite writers and wits. He leaves a big hole in British culture, much missed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13437293
