The only tool here is Peter McKinnon thinking he needs a 2400Mbit codec for YouTube vlogs.

Ha ha very nice Sony, now get back to work https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51015921

And it's not all about specs of course... Colour science, form factor, EVF, usability, menus... Sony is improving in all these areas but biggest advantage they have now is the mirrorless form factor. I'd rather have a 1D X Mark III with an articulated screen, E-mount and smaller body than I would in the EF mount DSLR mould although I see why some people still enjoy that. You can argue that even the larger mirrorless cams like S1 and S1H are unnecessarily bulky and heavy. I like the balance Sony has found with the A7R IV and improved body feel - larger grip, better dials and buttons. Wow, never thought I'd praise a Sony for the ergonomics. Shame the menus and general screen / live-view operability is still shit. Who wants a focus magnification button in playback mode that crops in 1000% and you have to slowly wheel your way back out. Little stupid things like this that Sony still does and Canon does not.

That is a good way to put it, and I stand corrected on the price because it is actually a rip off £6500 in the UK, not £5500 https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-iii-digital-slr-camera-body-1727870/ That is eye watering in 2020 when you can get an S1 for £1700 or S1H for £3500. So nice try Canon. Come back when you have these video specs in a mirrorless camera for $2000 to rival Panasonic and Sony.

Not sure about 1.3x? Same crop as 1D X II so more like 1.4x in DCI 4K and 1.5x in UHD Shame no DPAF in the highest quality 60fps modes. Does it work in 5K RAW at all? 24p? So a bit crippled, but the main thing that cripples this camera is the DSLR form factor. We are way beyond it. 1D X II came out in 2016, and by 2019 was worth just £2500. So hopefully, many more of us can pick up the Mark III in 2022 or something used, when it will make more sense. I am not shelling out £5500+ for a DSLR and £1000 for some cards, no matter how good that codec is. In the Leica SL2 I have 5 axis IBIS better than Sony, killer codec and colour science, amazing EVF, Leica's sleek body and minimalist controls, 4K/60p, 5.5K anamorphic and internal 10bit LOG for that price, and no need to buy expensive CF Express cards. When I need to dabble in 4K with autofocus, I can switch to A7R IV. Both these cameras shoot arguably better stills than the 1D X III although personally most of the time I am usually as happy with 20MP as I am with 60MP... Landscape shots and cropping benefit enormously from the higher resolution hybrid cameras. And when I want 1800Mbit 4K RAW files, I turn to the bargain Sigma Fp. It is good though that Canon seem now to be abandoning their 'lets piss off every video user all the time' strategy with their stills cameras. Bodes well for next EOS R.

* 13 mins is for 5.5K RAW 60p, yes the 24p will give you more time on a card... still expensive though to get through a shoot with 1800Mbit to some of the most expensive cards on the market. In my opinion yes there are, and they are cheaper. Panasonic S1 gives you 1D X Mark III rivalling codec and image quality for around $2k (with V-LOG update). Although none of them marry 4K 60p 10bit full frame with Dual Pixel AF, they are better in other areas. Principal one being usability and feature-set. Yes you can argue Canon has made the first 4K/60p/10bit/full frame/DPAF camera and those are all headline features, if you wanted all that on a Panasonic or Sony you may have to wait another year or 2. Panasonic S1H however does all the 10bit 4K stuff better aside from FF 60p and the AF...But it is $3.5K and Netflix approved, the image is blazing a trail. This has advantage of IBIS and an EVF too, as well as articulated screen and more adaptable lens mount, cheaper media costs, more options. Leica SL2 is a sexier camera to use, sex on legs, sexier than anything I have personally handled It offers full frame (well, near full frame 1.1x crop) 4K/60p in 8bit and 4K/24p full frame 10bit ALL-I 400Mbit. No RAW but an extensive feature set - very in-depth. Like a supercharged S1R for video. A7R IV is a contender for hybrid stills / video use. The stills side is beyond compare, 60 megapixels, cutting edge AF, large EVF and very good IBIS... although not as steady as Leica SL2 or S1H. Remember the A7S III is on the horizon which is likely to give you the full frame 10bit 4K 60p for $3k mark along with Canon beating AF... Canon 1D X Mark III might be short lived at the top for people who want 4K/60p/DPAF and RAW.

An in-depth look at the white paper and 1D X Mark III codec https://www.eoshd.com/2020/01/canon-1d-x-mark-iii-finally-canon-get-serious-about-dslr-video/ Certainly the best DSLR (note... "DSLR"!) for video on the market at the moment... But those file sizes are media costs are eye-watering for the 5.5K RAW. In region of $500 for 13 minutes. The 4K 10bit is more tempting and it's 60p, no crop. Still, it is in the wrong form factor... Needs to be in a mirrorless camera. I think the 1D X Mark III will be a great shot getter and sexy gimbal camera though.

The gotcha is: IT'S A DSLR! Why shoot with a DSLR in the era of Mirrorless 10bit?

Nice shooting sir.

I agree with those. My gear of the decade, off top of my head: Mirrorless cameras as a whole (E-mount, M43, X-Mount), we'd be really bored and stuck in last decade without those. GH1 / GH2 GH4 / GH5 Magic Lantern (Canon would be a 10-year non-event without it!) Sony A7S and A7S II Samsung NX1 The first Metabones Speed Booster was very exciting. Thanks Mr Caldwell. Sigma ART 35mm F1.4 was a breakthrough for the company and been on upward track ever since 5D Mark II / III (did a lot to popularise DSLR video) Panasonic S1H Fuji GFX 100 (totally niche - purely to show the technological progress in 10 years) Fuji X-T3 and X-H1 (great step forward for Fuji) Original BMCC (all down hill since then in my view) GX85, bargain of the decade? C-mount lenses revived for modern cameras Anamorphic makes big come back Leica SL / SL2... mmmmm yum Olympus IBIS tech...first and still the best Here are the camera companies that did the most 'good stuff' this decade... Panasonic Sigma Sony Fuji

Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW

Gorgeous shot that is mate. Lovely silky tones. What lens was it with? -
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/david-lynch-twin-peaks-virtual-reality-computer-game/ Seems to be an escape room style game experience Rather it was just a cinematic one where you watch!! Deeply immersive not sure about the game part, but an exciting move from Lynch if he ends up deeply involved in making it.

Happy Christmas everyone. Anybody getting anything camera-related for themselves or family? I myself am tempted by a used Hasselblad X1D which is now down to £2400. Must resist

A 15MP Sony Mirrorless Camera will be Announced Soon
Andrew Reid replied to androidlad's topic in Cameras
Are those high-frame rate 4k modes letterboxed crop, or stretched pixels taller than they are wide - is that possible with Quad Bayer? Line skipped or binned? I don't see any mention of phase-detect AF on-chip, is that normal for it to be left out of the specs sheet? -

Wonder if the 60MP mode will be implemented for stills? Or just 15MP. No 8K, I take it. -
1/1000 in low light - sounds like you need an absolute low light monster for that, and a faster lens than F2.8. Going to make it tricky and expensive to find something which works better than an X-T3 or GH5. Hard to find a telephoto faster than F2.8 for any system so you might want to look at what is going to give best results at ISO 12,800 and nails AF. I think a Sony A7 III or A9 might be a good bet. Canon EOS R not so much, heavy rolling shutter and not as good in low light. Nikon Z6 would be good and in some ways better than A7 III (120fps quality, better colour) but the AF in low light isn't as good as Sony's. Sony A6600 would have way too much rolling shutter so that's out. I would not disqualify the X-T3 if you put a speedier lens on it but depends on how much reach you need. Is AF important or are you doing manual focus?

Good codec & colour & stabilisation - GH5 or X-H1 Run & gun with really good AF - Not those Maybe a Sony or a Canon, but then you make trade offs over other important specs (like colour, or 10bit, or stabilisation). You may not need IBIS for ultra wide lenses. Shake is not as noticeable at wide angle. Also IBIS tends not to play very well with ultra wide focal lengths - warping / distortion can be present. X-T3 with 18-55mm F2.8-4 OIS makes for a good run & gun documentary cam. The optical stabilisation should be enough for ya. Olympus E-M1 II with firmware update and their 12mm F2 is also a good bet. I'd avoid the EOS R it's a bit naff if you want 4K and wide angle due to the big crop and lack of good wide EF-S lenses.

Yes it gives you much more dynamic range to exploit in post, compared to shooting a non-LOG profile, and it makes the footage LUT compatible, which is a big benefit of LOG as well.

Panasonic sell all of its semiconductor business to Taiwan
Andrew Reid replied to ntblowz's topic in Cameras
I was shocked to see the prices of the Panasonic S1 on eBay yesterday. Used ones are fetching just £1000 to £1200. Serious bargains for you guys. Not so promising for Panasonic, who have already lowered the price to £1700 new after cash-back in the UK, for instance. The camera started off at £2400 and I paid 2600 euros for mine. I am not too happy. This was literally only 3 months ago. Wish I had waited. -
Sigma Fp review and interview / Cinema DNG RAW
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
They are a full pixel readout from the sensor (6K RAW), then somewhere in the image pipeline the RAW data is resampled to 4K. There is no line skipping or pixel binning on the sensor, so it is a very crisp and clean image. If you look at some of the stills cameras and DSLRs, they offer RAW stills settings (Med 4K, Low 2.5K, etc.) at lower resolutions too... So a similar thing happens on the Fp, but in RAW video mode, with no overheating or anything like that. Quite incredible. Premiere support for Cinema DNG is not good, don't bother with that, and either transcoding to ProRes or editing in Davinci will serve you much better performance wise. -
