Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
That's insane Sitting on stock while everyone buys it elsewhere. You'll be amazed by the lack of logic at big established companies, be it a shop or a camera company Enjoy the EOS R - looking forward to seeing your footage -
Nikon Z7 is at EOSHD HQ - better video than Sony?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
To my unscientific eye I'd put the Z7 FX around 22ms and the EOS R 1.8x crop around 35ms. I do wonder what difference bit-depth makes to how fast a sensor can get the data off. It could be that Canon insist in a slower 14bit output, even in video mode (not just for stills) to preserve colour. Canon have always been big on colour. We know for sure it is a 14bit raw buffer from Magic Lantern even in line-skipped 1080p! It could be that all these Sony and Nikon sensors doing great video, drop the bit-depth to 12bit or 10bit to achieve the fast readout. Maybe they even drop to 8bit sensor modes and that's why I could never see the difference between 10bit HDMI and 8bit HDMI on the GH4 It also seems Nikon are reading more data in FX on the Z7 than the A7R III because the rolling shutter is less in full frame on that camera in 4K vs Super 35 mode, and it has more aliasing. -
How did your football go with the Leica SL EVF? I am curious to see some shots if you can publish any. Hopefully the dreadful Spanish weather did not interfere!?

Quick Q about GH5, Speedbooster Ultra EF, and old lenses on EF adapters
Andrew Reid replied to jgharding's topic in Cameras
Yeah sounds like the AF confirm chip is the problem... passive dumb adapter will do it but be careful it doesn't short the metal contacts on the Metabones. I have gaffer tape over some of mine, especially the silver non-painted ones which can brush right up against the contacts and short them out. For a moment I thought you meant the speed booster was causing lens attachment failed... It can do that some times as well... a wiggle sorts that out, if not attached to the GH5 mount quite solidly enough. -
Why?

Are cameras without IBIS and AF useless for shooting video in 2018?
Andrew Reid replied to A_Urquhart's topic in Cameras
The foot lever is an excellent idea. I have shot with a monopod with Gitzo fluid head, works well - but the height adjustment is a pain and the yaw / side to side jitter can be a bit of an issue with monopods. -
First test of Magic Lantern on the Canon EOS R by EOSHD and A1ex
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Who knows? Latest UHS-II spec SD cards are very speedy. No idea what controller is on the EOS R. -
The 1080p looks a tad over sharpened but it's still very impressive given 120fps. Not quite as good as the GH5 1080/24p though... Beats the GH3 and GH4 1080p, that's for sure... And look at that colour

Do you mean a small car in the background? That is not going to show up the rolling shutter. Needs to be a larger object closer to the camera and moving quite fast sideways, or the whole frame needs to be moving. Rolling shutter correction when the whole frame moves is fine, that is how Premiere can do it in post. But you're right it wouldn't work for moving objects that are distorted. The correction would have to be applied only to moving subjects in a static frame and not the background. Impossible. Background would have to be filled-in around the corrected object and you'd have all sorts of artefacts. Something very odd about that test!! Almost as if he's converted both to a 1080p file, before digitally zooming both for the crop-ins. Also, lens seems very soft. Maybe he should share the original files.

Nice. Very small and discrete! PS I am looking to buy a Bolex Anamorphic if anyone has one, let me know in a DM!

I don't trust Chinese "Fuji staff" talking on Weibo!! That doesn't tend to be how the Japanese operate! Maybe you are right about the bit-depth though. I have an open mind about it. Willing to change my opinion. My opinion at the moment though, is still that it is a Samsung sensor.

Are cameras without IBIS and AF useless for shooting video in 2018?
Andrew Reid replied to A_Urquhart's topic in Cameras
I am only joking. I quite agree with you actually. IBIS is a bit lazy, and it doesn't give as cinematic results as proper rigging or a tripod. But it's a lot more fun for run & gun narrative, a lot quicker, stealthier and a lot easier. As for AF, it depends on how well it works. Dual Pixel AF can be very cinematic. Anything that darts around or hunts is out. It depends on the shot as well, as whether or not you track focus on something depends on the story and mood of the scene. -
Nah, it's not. The X-T3 sensor has an X-trans CFA which is Fuji property, so the chip cannot be listed for sale off the shelf by Sony without violating Fuji's intellectual property and patents. They list a 20MP sensor with full pixel readout at 60fps. (IMX272). That one is capable of 4K/60p like on the GH5 from full pixel readout. The one at 16fps is NOT. Sony 26MP APS-C sensor speed is listed at 16fps in full pixel readout. X-T3 sensor has full pixel readout in 4K at up to 30fps. No crop. Full width. That is over 6K. Considerably faster than the Sony specs quoted on their site. Let's not forget the 4K/60p. Have fun turning 16fps into 60fps!! That is a full pixel readout as well with a small crop of the sensor, yet the Sony 26MP chip can do a maximum full pixel readout of the whole sensor at just 16fps. That does not translate into 4K/60p on the X-T3 in any way, shape or form.

Your Pocket 4K advertising is getting more subliminal. Well done. -
When you're moving the frame, a longer lens will of course make the contents of the frame move through quicker. Of course even if you use a 35mm equiv. wide frame, completely still on a tripod, stuff can still move in the frame - a sparring boxer, a train, a swift movement from an actor, and trigger the distortion. The important thing is to do comparison tests. All cameras at the same focal length (equivalent, so not all same lens but same FOV), on same tripod, moved at same speed at exact same moment. I just did a test for myself of the Z7 vs EOS R and the Z7 is nowhere near as bad. That is both in 4K (full frame on Z7). I could share it, but you don't deserve it

A7R III looks like it has a veil over it compared to that X-T3 120fps!! And I was impressed with that in the first place. Wowzers. Well done Samsung! DPReview: "Probably the camera's most powerful video feature is the Movie Silent Control mode" EH?! DPReview: "Like the GH5S though, the X-T3 has no in-body image stabilization, which is realistically going to limit you to using a tripod or gimbal if you want to get anything like the camera's full resolution in your footage, since in-lens stabilization can't provide effective correction for video shooting." Since when does OIS on the lens reduce resolution? I am very confused by that!! Even at 1/50 with OIS you're going to get a pristine 4K image and if not, then 1/200 won't have ANY motion blur from handheld shooting with OIS.

Yes they actually went from bottom of the pile to first in 4 years.

If you like this forum and want to stay, you better apologise then. Nah mate, it's not a thin skin - it is that I am fed up with dealing with so many fuckwits. It is not that manufacturers "don't reach out to me", Panasonic, Leica, Sony all did previously. Even Canon did once upon a time. I am not here to defend myself. I don't need to. I do the right thing for the direction I want to take the blog in, and if you can't see that because you're too stupid, that ain't my problem!

Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Haha very true. And all those 3/4 year old cameras hmcindie mentioned did not just come out last week, in the age of fast sensors! The EOS R did. -
Bullshit. It isn't. I think the only thing subconscious in loving a brand is when you love a brand and project the behaviour it at other people, who you expect to also be a brand whore. Z7 does full frame 4K from a 46MP sensor and the image is amazing so even if it had an unknown Norwegian logo featuring a dead moose, I'd still do the same thing. What a spoilt comment!! In the pipeline is a 100 megapixel medium format camera and all you can do is pre-empt poor rolling shutter performance. You know absolutely nothing about that sensor or camera. It isn't even finished. I don't really want to be drawn by your trolling. I don't need to defend myself. It's my house and I can pick and choose who I invite into the community and who I consider bad for it, who should go. Let's look at your account for example. You aren't offering anything apart from a snide anti-Andrew Reid sentiment, in my own living room and on my phone. You're spinning things and you know you are. This site is about learning new information. When I mentioned the rolling shutter within a day of getting my EOS R. you should thank me for it. You're better informed now, thanks to me (not that you show any gratitude whatsoever). The other article about a completely different camera, that isn't even a review, with rolling shutter that isn't problematic, does not contain a rolling shutter mention - GO FIGURE SHERLOCK!
-
I am not really used to rolling shutter any more, because all my recent cameras have been sub 20ms. The GH5, GH5S, E-M1 II, X-H1, A7 III and finally to X-T3 - so coming off the back of those, it's like going back to an A6300 - so seems more shocking. Yes, it's possible to get used to it. The other thing is, you don't really expect it at 50mm! But then you realise because of the nearly 2x crop it is more like a 90mm, which exaggerates the rolling shutter even more compared to a 50mm at full frame field of view. If you use a wider lens on the EOS R, it is a work-around for the rolling shutter... Shooting at 10mm or 18mm for example, you will notice it less.
-
The earliest initial impression I had of the EOS R was the rolling shutter. The earliest impressions I had of the Z7 was that it was nicer than my Sony A7R III in the hand, and in terms of the image, and the rolling shutter didn't stand out as anything abnormal, unlike on the EOS R. It just wasn't an issue for me. Ditto on the D850. It wasn't immediately obvious from the get go, the minute I opened the box. So we're 10 minutes into Kai's video, out of 13 minutes and yes it seems there's a 2 second mention. So I should probably give him the benefit of the doubt. But when I watched it the first time just after release as a subscriber to his channel, I am pretty sure it wasn't in. There are such a thing as ninja edits and re-uploads. But let's be clear, I've nothing personal with Kai, he could be a nice guy, but he doesn't help our cause as customers - he doesn't give the problem any gravitas. He's not even a proper reviewer. He's an entertainer. He turns it into a positive in those few seconds of a mention, which are just soft pawing out claims to the effect of the 1080p "has an advantage" because it has less rolling shutter than 4K, 'just like that wonderful best selling 5D IV you all bought'. That's how it comes across to me. It may technically be a 'mention of rolling shutter' but it's not a mention in the sense I meant it in my article - a mention of just how BAD the rolling shutter is on this camera. He just sweeps it under the rug in less than 5 seconds in a 13 minute video and doesn't really criticise it. That's the *whole point* I was making in the article - none of them mentioned the rolling shutter in terms of it being amongst the worst on the market in 2018 and immediately OBVIOUS straight out of the box in 4K. So whilst @jonpais is calling EOSHD "fake news" and telling me how to run the site, perhaps he should realise one thing. I am a bit disappointed by his remarks. All the squabbling on the forums over the past few months from him and the Sony fanboyism in every subject, treating some threads like his own private inbox for chats and arguments, all leave a bitter taste for me because he's a long-time member. He seems to have gone from productive posting in the early days of the forum about Panasonic, up through being rewarded by being promoted to a mod, back down to being a non-mod due to bad behaviour, and now he's cruising for a bruising or even a ban. I just find that incredibly self destructive.
