I agree, two models would be good, if the lock mechanism isn't possible. If they take it out, it's an instant no-buy for me.

Partly in return for Fuji's material science contribution to ISOcell sensors perhaps? -

"Hidden" 10bit 5K mode on the Panasonic S1 has HUGE 200Mb bitrate

Well at least the firmware update will fix the audio codec. You're never going to get the best audio quality through internal pre-amps anyway, always better to use an external device. The audio circuit inside a camera has a lot of other noise from electronics and heat to deal with. I think Panasonic are holding a few things back from the $2k S1, for obvious Cinema Lumix related reasons! That camera might be $4k or even $6k though, so at least you are saving some money by going with the S1 and it's minimally crippled video feature set. It's far from an EOS R. No crop, anamorphic aspect ratios, great codec, internal 10bit, soon to be 4:2:2, high bitrates, 4K/60p Super 35, hardly lacking for a stills camera is it? -
Hope they don't leave out IBIS like they did with the GH5S.

"Hidden" 10bit 5K mode on the Panasonic S1 has HUGE 200Mb bitrate
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
How do you know this dude? Panasonic haven't announced the details yet. Yes, from a 2x crop sensor. Still impressive though but it is $2000 before you have added all the spidery shitty un-ergonomic bits. -
Impressive indeed. 200Mbit 10bit! There is a very small crop in the 6K mode. Let's call it 5K actually, because that's what it is. I still don't know where Panasonic get their 6K from!? With K you only measure horizontally. The 30p is a shame... I wish it were 25p at least, to avoid flickering in PAL countries and get it closer to the cinema look of 24p. I think it's worth waiting for the V-LOG update, which should bring a similarly high bitrate to the 4K mode... As well as 10bit 4:2:2 not just 4:2:0. Hopefully they will also add an anamorphic mode... if the Cinema Lumix camera doesn't get there first, that is!

The US has transitioned very successfully to a services based economy. I don't understand why so many Americans want the polluting labour intensive factories back and to plunder the land for massive amounts of raw material. That's why you have China, they are willing to do all of this and pollute their environment, so you don't have to, and so your kids can go to a nice school, get a good education and have a nice job that doesn't depend on manual labour. Other European countries are not in bad shape either. Like the US industry, Germany has maintained a lot of high skilled manufacturing and services. Premium car manufacturing, premium technology products, Leica, etc... It's far better than industrial component manufacture for cheap goods, believe me. London has a booming creative economy and massive financial sector. Sure, the steel industry is close to collapse... But it employs a tiny fraction of what a single shop chain does in the UK... So why does it matter? As long as these people can get satisfying jobs at other companies and the economy continues to grow, and we import steel... it doesn't.

The 100 megapixel monster announced at Photokina last year has landed. The Fuji GFX 100 will be shipping from June 30th and it is far better from a video perspective than I imagined. In fact in many ways, you are looking at the best studio and mirrorless camera ever made, as far as the specs sheet goes. That larger-than-full frame 44 x 33mm sensor is going to cost you over the usual 36 x 24mm though... Compared to a high-spec $2000 full frame camera the GFX 100 is $10,000. Even so, this smashes a barrier for medium format pricing compared to the first one to shoot 4K, the $28,000 Hasselblad H6D 100C. Read the full article

UK based, Japanese owned chip-designer ARM this week announced it is severing business ties with Huawei and others are following suite. Panasonic too, have announced a complete cut in the supply of unspecified components to the Chinese company. According to Nikkei Asian Review, even German chipmaker Infineon confirmed on Monday it needed to "halt American-origin shipments to Huawei to comply with U.S. law". What hope for Huawei supplier Leica? Huawei said in a statement to reporters that it valued the close relationships with partners, but recognised the intense pressure they are under as a result of 'politically motivated decisions'. I think image quality is already so good in 10bit on the S1 for $2k... They will have to do something different with the Cinema version for it to justify greater cost. If you pixel peep this frame from my S1 for example it's hard to see where what exactly is so bad about it that we need a $6000 version!
-
The S1 is getting 10bit 422 V-LOG at high bitrates, like an EVA-1... The full V-LOG not V-LOG-L like GH5. So if the "Cinema Lumix" is going to be an S series camera in same mould as the S1, why would Panasonic give you that on the cheap body? It leaves even less room for a "cinema" version of the S1. I suspect the Cinema Lumix camera will be in region of $6K for 6K and more likely in an EVA style form factor.

I am very impressed with the 10bit H.265 codec in the S1. It looks laughable because of the small file sizes and bitrate (72mbit H.265 = 144mbit H.264) but actually it's surprisingly close to the look of ProRes on my BMPC4K. It also looks less compressed than Sony's 100Mbit codec and more in keeping with a good 140Mbit H.265 4K file... That is close to 10bit ProRes Proxy in terms of the compression (Proxy is 150Mbit in 4K 25p)... But as it's not an ALL-I codec, it doesn't need as high a bitrate to look as good. Try it, and you will be surprised. S1 beats the BMPC4K for sensor size and lowlight... not to mention powering the damn thing... and all the extra stuff you get like the massive high res EVF and 5 axis IBIS.

Yes the 7D is also good. https://www.eoshd.com/2017/06/magic-lantern-raw-video-current-camera-capabilities-updated-2017/ 7D - 1728 x 972 – APS-C (14bit 16:9) - 2048 x 930 – 4.07x crop mode (14bit 2.2:1) 50D - 1536 x 1056 – APS-C (14bit 3:2) - 1536 x 864 – APS-C (14bit 16:9) - 2000 x 852 – 3.8x crop mode (14bit 2.35:1) https://www.eoshd.com/2013/08/canon-7d-raw-with-magic-lantern-1st-sample-footage-in-the-wild/ Disclaimer is things may have changed a bit since... development on the cheapest cameras 50D and 5D2 seem to have been more of a focus than some of the others including the 7D with it's tricky dual CPU setup. Even some of the SD card cameras are now shooting pretty well in RAW thanks to the 10bit mode. https://www.eoshd.com/2017/06/enabling-10bit-raw-video-mini-canon-100d/ Update: Ah, I see the 50D now does "3744x1080 23.976fps /w realtime preview". That's in 10bit RAW. It's a crop mode though, so not Super 35mm full width of the sensor. And the aspect ratio is whacky. The good thing about the 5D2 is the 3K crop mode is S35-ish... around 1.86x. The 5D3 is king with the 3.5K / 1.5x RAW crop mode but more expensive than a used 5D2, by upward of $1000 difference. For 2K cinema like an Alexa, the full frame look is what I use most on the 5D2 and 5D3 and here there's less difference than you'd think! Both very nice! The article wanted to focus on dead cheap stuff $200 to $1000. Of course if you spend more, you can get a Pocket 4K, or a GH5S, Canon 1D C or even a Nikon Z6 with RAW output (coming soon)... and so on... But I still think there is a lot to be said for the down and dirty older cameras and how cinematic they are.

Hard to believe it, but EOSHD is nearly 10 years old! 2010 was a big year for digital cinema. The 5D Mark II was in full stride kickstarting DSLR filmmaking. Arri's first proper digital film camera the Alexa was released and revolutionised filmmaking at the highest levels. Now all these years later I'm still looking - not for the sharpest, highest K, most featured packed modern camera but for a camera costing less than $1000 which has the most Alexa-like image. Not on a technical level, of course, but in terms of the feel of the images and how cinematic the end-results are when viewed on the big screen. Read the full article

Really, the Alexa is impractical for most people and I agree with Ed that there are better buys even at £5k It has such a nice image but easy to make an impulsive decision based on the name. This might even get you close to the image for MUCH less https://cvp.com/product/z-cam-e2c-4k-cinematic-camera And RED Dragon 6K getting down towards £6k now. Worth keeping an eye out for those. Much lighter at 2.2kg, so more like an Alexa Mini. And much more res plus a better raw codec, all internal.

Apple and Google phones don't real generate random numbers, which are necessary for secure encryption. Government backdoor right there. I am sure these US bluechip companies are thrilled at the empty order book thanks to Donald Tit. Intel for example is set to lose potentially billions of dollars over next few years in lost Chinese orders. That Trump has so many people believing in his business skills is a neat trick. Unravelling the entire US economy is his other lesser known neat trick and this is the start of it. Huawei can afford to lose Qualcomm as can other companies. Snapdragon is replaced by Kirin 980 already in the P30 Pro and many other handsets and I can personally vouch for how fast it is. However, if the Chinese wanted to withdraw a few services.... Let's say "manufacturing"... Where does that leave important US tech giants like Apple and Google? What if Foxconn closed the order books on those companies? And on RED? A trade war is like any other war. Nobody wins.

Huawei will no longer have access to Android and Google Play Services for future devices (nor updates for current ones) after Google suspended business under pressure from the Trump administration. This has implications for Leica as well, who have a partnership with Huawei on the flagship camera phones such as the P30 Pro and Mate20 Pro. Read the full article

Yes a few scorch marks from the engine and the plastic over the focus scale has melted off. Bit of tape over that!! It has resulted in a nice price though. Usually they are 3 grand on eBay!

Let me know how the Japan store camera hunting goes. Some great shops there. I found a Canon 200mm F1.8 EF in Berlin or 1150 euros last week No idea how I am going to fit it in my hand luggage though.

I would do, but it's probably going to die at some point It's also a heavy beast, so my back might die even sooner that it does. I wish we had got a smaller Alexa, in days gone by - for around £25,000 which could now be picked up for £5000. I suppose we'll have to wait a big longer for the Alexa Mini to come down in price!! I wonder how much it would be to insure an Alexa and how much it could be rented out for? That would be one way to make the £5k back. Talking of depreciation... I just bought a 1DS Mark III with 28-70mm F2.8 for 900 euros all-in... That combo was over 10 grand in 2008.
