  1. I have some tips! Summary: Better sample footage at launch Better availability straight after launch Marketing to relevant audience online rather than biggest audience Not cannibalising A7S III sales with A7 III Canon full frame lenses and 1.8x crop shambles Keeping Cinema EOS "seed" from photographic business planted with good video in Canon EOS range Keeping people in a lens ecosystem with good bodies Knowing how your "well understood" market has changed in an instant Shift to high-end pricing is dangerous (China) Understanding apps Read the full article
  2. Thank you. I am a bit discouraged I guess. It's hard to have every living day taken up by your obsession, when you just get a load of snide remarks thrown at you constantly on your own Facebook page and Forum, by trolls who are getting all these articles and useful tips straight out of my head and off my back. They'd have the shirt off my back as well I think.
  3. I am not slating the guy. K-pop videos are just not my artistic bent. I know it is the Trump-era and people are a little sensitive about criticism just like him. You can't seem to critique the work of someone these days without it coming across as you hating the living daylights of the person who made it. I certainly don't hate. I just like to think objectively, that something like this from me, aimed at 800,000 camera users, would have been more useful and Blackmagic would have sold more units. But what the fuck do I know? Maybe it needs more arses?
  4. I don't even think 300,000 subscribers mean jack shit if they are not there for camera news. They are there for K-POP videos and don't care what camera those are shot on. Even if he sells all his Cinema EOS or RED gear and uses the Pocket 4K on his future KPOP videos, one it might not be the right tool for the job, and two it would go out to a sea of disinterested non-camera people who are there for the music instead. He could put a link to the camera in the description and I suppose Blackmagic is expecting a sales hike that way? Hmm. I don't understand this fascination camera companies have with pros and their amazing viewing figures. If you are going to seed a K-POP audience, you better hope they are all filmmakers in need of RAW! Otherwise you get what? 10,000 views, 90% of them disinterested wondering why they are watching a video full of giraffes and flamingos rather than tits and ass? Blackmagic's strategy is flawed. I am sorry but it is. Very respectfully I am going to have to put my point to them when I next chat. Shane Meadows has shot with Blackmagic cameras. At least give him a call? No?
  5. 14,000 views. Oops. See what happens when you take the sexy KPOP girls out a Youtube vid?! You take the sexy ass wiggling out and what have you got... just a nerd with a new camera Nothing against the guy, but I have no clue what Blackmagic are expecting from this strategy. How many KPOP fans are there for the girls and music, and how many of his subscribers are interested in a Pocket 4K Camera?!
  6. What's the point of giving the first cameras to pros then? Everyone will have their own personal opinion but I think the footage just shows that lacking IBIS hurts handheld shooting. Until I have shot a great variety of Cinema DNG clips to grade, I am not able to judge the camera. In this video, the footage looks no better or worse than a GH5S, A7 III, etc. LOL. Was that not already obvious to you from any everyday shoot with any camera? You suddenly learnt that useful info from this clip did you... Oh.. Ok. The rolling shutter should be ok as it is the same sensor as the GH5S, 13ms readout. Yes, important not to be personal. One can critique a video, without being personal about the artist. I am just saying he did not put his best foot forward with this work, and it's a very primitive test video shot like stills. I think, if you're going to have the privilege of one of the first demo cameras you should be doing a lot better stuff than that, that's all. So this is his best work, a load of tits and ass. 3m views though, which gives you an idea of why he has a demo camera!
  7. Which makes the effort of the shoddy P4K video even more baffling. No jealousy, just objective fact. It's not a piece of cinematography worthy of any kind of artistic standard.
  8. The great thing about the P20 and P20 Pro is the DNG RAW. You bypass the over processing and get 7K raw files to play with... IN-PHONE. Switch the camera app to Pro mode and download the app Polarr.
  9. Maybe we should have a "critics" style blog post where we critique the pros who shoot this crap and maybe give them some tips. The official Nikon Z7 demo reel grade, the John Brawley model outcall sessions, the X-T3 60p stuff, let's help them so they can be better
  10. I am pretty unimpressed with the footage as well, it's not a good showcase for the camera. First problem is it seems to be shot like a stills shoot. I am sure in isolation some of the frames make nice photographs but as a video it doesn't hold up at all, there are no ideas or mood to it, or any purposeful camera moves or edits to support the content. Several shots underexpose the skin tones 2 or 3ev making her look about 20 years older, the handheld shots are wobbly and add nothing to the aesthetic, the tripod sections are shot like a stills shoot with the model trying to pose for stills, but the only difference is that the photographer has pressed the video button instead of the shutter release. Is this supposed to be an example of the "pro" approach to filmmaking? Is this supposed to be Blackmagic's strategy to put the camera ONLY in the hands of actual PROS rather than just reviewers? Because it's not speaking well for either their capabilities or the camera's capabilities.
  11. He should have filmed the video whilst sipping a mojito from a deckchair on a beach whilst wearing a Canon baseball cap on backwards, it would have about the same credibility. Yes let me get my money out once more, I am so eager to spend $2300 on a 1.8x crop 4K camera with no IBIS and lenses with no wide angle end. BARGAIN!
  12. LOOOOOL That article really makes me want to run out and drop $3000 on a full frame lens so I can enjoy it in 1.8x crop. No, not annoying at all. NOOO. I like the jibe at me as well in the article, even though he doesn't mention EOSHD, I know who he's talking about! Also this gem.. "video production was not a focus for this camera" Did he see ANY of the marketing on Canon's own website? They bang on and on about video in it.
  13. 60P adds a documentary-like realism to the footage but it isn't in the least bit cinematic. 24p all the way for me. Camera is looking like a great buy BUT let's not get TOO carried away and hype it to death. It is not THAT much better than a NX1. Maybe in low light and for 4K slow-mo from that 60p. It will be superseded quite soon by an X-H2. Maybe as soon as in 6 months. Something to be aware of, for those who need IBIS and superior ergonomics.
  14. I think a lot of you (all of you?) come to this thread to learn more about the camera, so I'll save my lengthy apologies for a blog post. It's not been my finest hour, but frustration will do that to a man.
  15. I am certainly not bigger than a camera company, or more important than Blackmagic and I think people may have seen the hysterics as a bit silly. I accept that yes, possibly I have shot myself in the foot. Having said that, EOSHD is bigger than me as well and is a real community. I was standing up for the community and not just for myself. This was a perfect storm for me. A combination of several factors which caused me to get upset enough to write that article... First the Canon EOS R launch and the new levels of invasive of PR offensive we are seeing from the camera companies to quell dissent and turn even Caleb Pike into a "it's not perfect but WOW what a great camera" kind of guy. Rather than the person he should be, a "1.8x crop sucks" kind of reviewer. Secondly the overwhelming feeling of shithead sycophants climbing above my site, in the VIP lane, completely undeservedly. Thirdly the geographical positioning of the Blackmagic event, it being on my doorstep. Next the fact Cinema5D were paid to fly in. I could have walked in. Finally, the John Brawley factor on here and the lack of support from most of my own readers, honestly all this is enough to give someone a nervous breakdown. It's hard to really get across how I feel, because it is a weird situation and I think the internet is a bit weird as well. In real life, people don't say the things I say or say the things to me that I have had to put up with. People need to calm down, myself included. It's only a camera. But I do feel the future of camera and tech journalism is at stake. In fact it may already be absolutely dead. And the most depressing thing of all is that the reader is fine, unawares, and on the most part notices no issue. No, that wasn't my intention. Yes I have dug myself into a very silly hole. I'll be the first to admit that. Yes Johnnie at Cinema5D is laughing his business head off as we speak.
  16. Fantastic. Some wonderful shot ideas in here, perfectly executed!
  17. Nigelbb is almost a Bob Dylan level artist. I remember when Dylan calculated in his head the cost of the car to get him to the gig. And in-between writing lyrics he obsessed about the cost of his guitar and whether it would be accepted by his clients.
  18. Classic phrase haha. Most cameras are shit in about 6 months when the next one comes out! Pocket 4K is flavour of the month but when people start to sit down and actually edit 4K 60p Cinema DNG on their machines, the tears of frustration are going to come pouring out. You think 1080p 24p uncompressed DNG was choppy to edit with big file sizes, you ain't seen nothing yet They will all be back to the warm embrace of the full frame look and IBIS, huge EVF and looooong battery life, 240fps and 10bit on an A7S III / Panasonic full frame Lumix in no time. I can imagine. It wouldn't do them any favours. Maybe that's why they didn't let Cinema5D shoot with it haha
  19. Cinema5D are just the specs sheet with a smile.
  20. Nope they've said it publicly. Anyway, enough about me. Please guys, talk about the camera and I will stay out
  21. HALLELUJAH!! Thank you, and I mean it. Finally there is someone here who has not just arrived in the past month or so and skim-read the blog for less than 5 minutes!!! Did you know Johnnie / Nino at Cinema5D go around saying I can't shoot!!? Unbelievable. I find the pro video community SO FULL of arseholes sometimes, it's unreal. No wonder choose to be outside it rather than be chummy with such egotists and their naked self-interest. I would like this thread to get back on the topic of the overrated Blackmagic Pocket Camera so this will be the last post for a while from me, unless attacked again. See you in the other threads about other cameras.
  22. They did give the camera to reviewers. John was either wrong or lying. Correct. Just want to do my fucking job. It only sounds presumptuous if you aren't aware that this thread alone has 380,000 views, and the blog a million since August, and that I have been covering 'pocket' cinema cameras of all varieties since 2010 with the GH1 and was the first blogger to embrace Blackmagic's cameras when they came out in 2012. If you followed EOSHD from 2013 onwards you'd understand why it is an injustice. It's hard to explain this without sounding rather big headed about it, but that's the truth. Well, you won't get the camera reviews you deserve if you don't support an honest reviewer. That's life! I don't care about being in the pro box with lots of dull clients and a day rate. I make my own films and music videos. You clearly haven't been following EOSHD for long enough to realise it and it's a really off judgement you're making, and not a very nice one if I may say so as well.
  23. The motion cadence is super weird. Hope it is better with NDs. Or maybe we should forget about shooting 60p and choose 24p instead.
  24. I am just glad they paid for Johnnie's flight and hotel. That's really what matters with this camera, forget USB C.
