  1. Casey switched from Canon and Sony to using the Panasonic GH5 almost 90% of the time. He still has other cameras but it's the GH5 that really turned things around. Canon failed to give YouTubers like him what they need... 4K, small file sizes, articulated screen, all in the same camera... so the 5D Mk IV for all it's Dual Pixel AF goodness languishes in the corner as do the 1080p Canons - Big up-swing in noticeable quality when Casey switched to the GH5's 10bit 4K. Hopefully though, the number of out of focus shots in Casey's video where the camera selects the background instead of the subject will whip Panasonic into action to sort out some form of Dual Pixel AF competitor technology. Or maybe Casey doesn't mind... vlogging is a raw style, doesn't need to be formal and correct all the time. I do think AF in video mode is the next thing for Panasonic to get right though. It's a priority in my mind.
  2. It is brand new sensor technology potentially though. On-chip HDR with the quad bayer has never been seen before, in any camera.
  3. In terms of ex-tele on the GH5, might as well you shoot in open gate anamorphic as that uses the full sensor resolution, then you can crop 1080p from that in post, rather than bake the framing in-camera with ex-tele. Regarding the crop factors, I simplified things to only horizontal crop factor... if you take into account diagonal of 16:9 you might see slightly different numbers. What is everybody using for their longest telephoto zooms or primes? Would be great to see a list of options to consider, outside of just the ones I am thinking about. Canon 400mm F5.6L has AF and looks like nice 1.2kg alternative to the 5kg Canon FD 400mm F2.8L. Add that to the list. Wow. Did you ever try this setup with a more modern camera? Imagine that telescope with a D850!!

    Sony FS5

    The auto setting.
  5. This video of the international space station passing the moon has become quite famous on the internet, demonstrating as it does the unusual abilities of the Nikon P900, a super-zoom consumer camera which costs around $700. Can we do better with a 'proper' camera? Read the full article
  6. Yes looks like Casey has one... Well well well.... Better get my "old" GH5 on eBay quick!
  7. I think any possible GH5S actually compliments the EVA1 very well when you think about the type of people buying the EVA1. Anyway, new technology usually comes to the smaller cameras first and it is the case yet again here with Quad Bayer HDR. The EVA1 is designed to be a solid work tool, to please established pro videographers and it does so. The GH5S is a bit more 'wow' and would be a superb second camera for EVA1 owners. Plus it speaks far more to me, as I still prefer the tiny mirrorless cameras to 'traditional' form factor cinema cameras, even ones as small as the EVA1 or C300. By the way, if the rumors are true, I think this camera will be a breakthrough in dynamic range on ANY stills / mirrorless / DSLR. There will be a TON of photographers using the HDR mode on this sensor, believe me.
  8. Likely from an employee of a big media company or some such, who was told to sell surplus equipment. The device could have been part of a work project that was completed and then they had no use for it. Now it's definitely a rarity. Cost me £300. Let's see what it's worth in 10 years. Probably nothing
  9. They're raw stills graded with my photoshop presets... The video frames look just as good though... NX1 colour has always been a highlight.
  10. (Above, shot on the NX1 & full frame NX-L). The Samsung NX1 is at this moment in time the best value for money 4K Super 35mm camera with the best ergonomics and autofocus. I still end up using my NX1 more than my Sony A6500 and Fuji X-T20, which pale into insignificance vs what Samsung did nearly 3 years ago. Now the NX-L speed booster has developed further since my last article and I've been shooting a lot more with it. Read the full article
  11. Great thanks... this is why I write articles asking for help... Would not have found it myself.
  12. Holographic screens could be one of the next jumps in smartphone technology, certainly if RED's Hydrogen is anything to go by, but very little is known about the technology and very few people have seen the holographic display in action. Until the RED Hydrogen ships, it's a complete mystery. However, Leia, the company behind the display already had prototypes of the technology out in the wild. Read the full article
  13. Wow I thought Premiere was a piece of unreliable shit in the last version of Mac OS. It's even worse in High Sierra!! Avoid this upgrade like the plague if you rely on Adobe Premiere.
  14. Metal 2 should see some performance improvements in software that use it though. OpenCL in Premiere and Resolve should still be fine.
  15. I have downloaded it, hesitate to install it. Will try it on my Macbook first before putting it on my iMac!
  16. Can anyone confirm the problem has been fixed on the A7R III (3)? I hope so.
  17. They definitely aren't competing with the GH5. This one has a clearly different customer. Pro and enthusiast photographers, not pro video shooters and filmmakers. What GH5 owner is going to dump a ton of nice video features and better codec for a top LCD panel and bigger EVF? Even if you feel the G9 is more for you than the GH5, chances are Panasonic won't mind, as long as you buy a Panasonic not a Sony.
  18. Blade Runner and Alien both had amazing artists behind the set designs... in case of Alien, HG Giger of course... Pure genius. BR 2049 doesn't have evidence of a singular hand behind the designs, it seems like more of a committee and CGI effort.
  19. A7S / A7R release cycle: They tend to be 3-6 months apart A7R1 - October 2013 A7S1 - April 2014 A7R2 - June 2015 A7S2 - October 2015 A7R3 - October 2017 A7S3 - Probably April 2018 (NAB)
  20. My opinion, Sony are not very interested in the sub-$3000 camera market at the moment. You could get a used Leica SL for that.
  21. You notice lens shortcomings more in 4K but character is more important anyway.
  22. Personally guys, I won't be buying one. You can bet the A7S III will blow it away for video. And the competition is huge... D850, GH5, Leica SL in particular.
