  1. Cheers ed. With the wider glass, they tend to vignette. Super 16 or 16 needs to be 25mm or longer to have a chance in covering the larger micro four thirds sensor, sometimes even those vignette and the zooms are out. So stick to around 25mm and get one really nice one, is what I've tended towards

Interesting that the A99 II 4K came out slightly worse than A7R II - it must be doing a better image though, more pixels in the readout. Fastest stills camera sensors - GH5 and 1D X II... I think Canon could have given us better quality 120fps 1080p given how fast that chip is. Good to see BM at the top - power hungry though. Best value for money is GH5 and RX100 V.
  3. 8bit 4:2:0 on the C200 is a shame, but I understood why it had to be crippled to protect the C300 II. What I don't understand is why Canon feel they can fool people into believing their planned codec for 2018 is an 'upgrade' Surely C200 users know the difference between H.264 8bit 4:2:0 in a MP4 wrapper and an MXF wrapper, with meta data. I don't think you can really call that an upgraded coded. It is still H.264, 8bit, 4:2:0, isn't it! So Canon initially had a chart where the mysterious new codec would record to CFast 2.0 cards... Then that all changed and it is only going to record to SD cards now. I think Canon should come clean and tell C200 owners what the fuck just happened.
  4. All you have shown is that the GH5 is unsuitable for EXTREME GREEN backgrounds and SHIT looking images. Anyone can break a file. I can break the Alexa's files!
  5. The LG screen is probably fine in normal use. If it has uniformity and grain issues in certain situations then fine, good to know. Important to get it in perspective though, with how you actually use the phone. It is going to be a very very bad device for viewing flat grey surfaces in the dark that's for sure! On the camera front, I'd wait and see what the Google Pixel XL 2 brings as their image processing has been far superior to LG's so far. The current XL quite simply has a wonderful processor and sensor. It was a tough choice for me between that and the S8+ The S8+ won it in the end because of the screen and better raw images. To look at what the Pixel XL's processing did to the raw image data... it's a miracle transformation. And I fully expect XL 2 to have 10bit video and HDR if LG are making it... but for some reason I've never really got into video on smartphones that much... why bother, when you have so much else to play with that's far nicer? I am into smartphone photography on the other hand, as sometimes the best stills camera is the one you have on you. The best video camera on the other hand, is the one you make the effort to bring to a specific occasion!

  7. Nice colour, seems I underexposed a bit though... Seems V-LOG should be to the right 1-2 stops like S-LOG? By the way don't be afraid to push the shadows in 10bit... push the entire exposure 2 stops and it should be clean!
  8. Brian, I'm meeting one of the Panasonic USA bosses at IFA in Berlin on Monday and will mention it. I also think they should license your speed booster patents We would have much better native M43 glass if they did!!

  10. You absolutely need a HDR display to view HDR footage... otherwise it looks too dark and desaturated.
  11. It's not the style of writing or anything to do with the advice he's offering, I have no opinion on that... It's the fact I don't want camera and cinematography threads dragged off topic.
  12. Indeed. A good idea to wait and try the camera yourself. The image might be really good. There will be ways to shoot with it optimally and get the best out of it. Sure, it is not going to make your life as easy as a GH5, but for those who need video bolted to a full frame Nikon, it might be just the ticket.

Yes I really do think a shallow DOF is a poor man's 24p Of the two things that inform the film look they are very important and so if you have faux 24p you better shoot full frame to compensate On the other-hand you can say shallow DOF is overrated as there's a lot of deep DOF stuff which looks cinematic. I shoot with my rare Iscorama 2x ("Centavision" branded but really an Iscorama 42 with 2x stretch) at F5.6 with a gentle roll off to the background, not really a shallow DOF, and I didn't miss the full frame look, and I've shot with the Digital Bolex which had an incredible film like analogue feel to the sensor, the colour, rendering, the whole thing screamed FILM not SMALL CHIP! Even with the ultimate shallow DOF lens, the Leica Noctilux... it isn't the razor thin shallow DOF at F1 that is best about it... the overall rendering, vignetting, bokeh shape at the edges and pop to the contrast is what makes it.

  19. It's not so much the big size compared to mirrorless that's the problem, more the clunky AF in video mode (Dual Pixel AF aside), flippy mirror, need to activate live-view, flip the mirror up, no EVF, few stabilised primes and so on...it's a pain!

  21. Yeah I agree... When I tried the D500, I thought "great, beefy Nikon ergonomics instead of Sony fiddly buttons"... Haha, not for video it isn't. There is something very dated about the form factor now we've been spoilt with prosumer mirrorless cameras.
  22. Yes it is possible to use 4:3 as a normal recording mode and crop to whatever aspect ratio you like, such as 16x9 It is only just dawning on me for some reason, that they added a 5K video mode, haha. Just like that! Bang, first 5K mirrorless camera.
  23. Good stuff from Jacob. I missed the frame lines and operation lock features. This camera now has more features than ten Canons put together!
