Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware

I am using Adobe Premiere but with reservations... If it doesn't stop crashing soon, I am going to have to use something else. -
There's always room for premium paid content, I like Sean Reid of Reidreviews for instance even though his entire site is behind a paywall! I don't mind it, I'm not a communist. If it wasn't for the EOSHD shooter's guides I wouldn't be able to do this site. The thing with Cinema5D, it just seems it is a ploy to boost their profile as filmmakers whilst raking in the ad dollars, otherwise the content would be entirely different, and a damn sight more useful! In fact I am overall disappointed with 90% of what is out there at the moment, far too much click bait with even DPReview now in on it too. I am beginning to turn off. Philip Bloom when he was blogging - instant inspiration and I wanted to grab the camera. Click bait - zero inspiration, I feel treated like cattle. Z-Reviews on YouTube is great for headphone reviews by the way... THAT is the kind of colourful, engaging outspoken personality you need to get people enthusiastic about a good product. I have spent thousands on headphones because of this guy!! And enjoyed every moment of it!! Good products deserve good coverage.

Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware

They are really on the ball. I feel the respected as well and they have really supported EOSHD with this roll-out of the firmware. I feel every penny of the investment I made in the GH5 has been rewarded with this update, and the ALL-I codec is stunning. This is a Hybrid Log Gamma / TV thing, you are best off using H264 for everything else especially the 400Mbit ALL-I. Due to the high efficiency of H.265 it only needs half the bitrate of H.264 for the same quality so it is good for saving space, but it doesn't quite have the filmic motion and fine grain of the ALL-I H.264. -
Firmware 2.0 for the Panasonic GH5 has been officially announced, and will be available for download at the end of September 2017. I've been testing a pre-production version of this on my camera thanks to Panasonic, to bring you my first impressions of the new features which include: Professional 400Mbit ALL-I intraframe codec for 10bit 4K 4:2:2 "Open Gate" High Resolution Anamorphic Mode (4992 x 3744) Hybrid Log Gamma with view assist feature for HDR shooting New and improved autofocus engine for video Performance optimisations and bug fixes Read on to find out what it's like to shoot with...

Except it's run by a bunch of extremely rich guys who work full time in the film industry, and choose to give nothing back for free - it must be for a profit at all times!

JCS, why do you think this health advice is relevant for a camera forum? It's getting hard for threads about creativity and gear to be waylaid like this almost every time with your new age philosophies. Please let's try and stay on topic.

CInema5D lost more credibility with the forum sale to Planet5D and the GH5 'unusable' test than with this particularly piece of clickbait. But what will really bury Cinema5D is the lack of focus on enthusiasts, it's almost all pro stuff on there. I'm glad, less competition for me.
-
I don't find this to be the case. The GH5 does both stills and video while getting out the way. It's seamless, and far more convenient to use than a cinema camera. It has auto-exposure, a button to start recording, a very long run-time on one small battery and goes in the palm of your hand. Not so a highly specialised RED Epic which is heavy, requires a brick for a battery, has no point & shoot modes or full auto and needs specialised knowledge to use.

And a far better raw codec than Canon as well! Also real DPs don't use AF! -

Where are YOU going to get 10bit 4K 4:2:2 LOG and 180fps slow-mo for $6000? Not Canon! -
The individual is always susceptible to crowd forces, cultures, peer pressure, society norms, and so on. It's completely unrealistic, sadly, for individuals to act as individuals, self determining the destiny of the planet from individualistic change. The change should happen with the forces that shape the crowd.

Magic Lantern's raw looks to me to have the edge, it has more bit depth, better colour rendering and all for the bargain price of $0. -

Look at the codec on the GH5. It's laughable what Canon is offering for triple the money! -
It's more of a marketing thing than a principle... The purity of the camera as an artistic photography tool is tainted when you put modern stuff like video and wifi on it. And the association most 'purist / traditional' photographers make with video is that video is something you do with an iphone, point and shoot, or something you do with a film crew at an extremely high level that has nothing to do with being a lone photographer / artist... So they don't feel it has a place on a traditional photographic tool like the Leica M, and I totally understand that, right tool for the job, etc. However for me it's nice to have on even the most photography focused body... Even if you'd be crazy to pick an M for video over a SL or GH5... It is the convergence of stills and video that is the future for me, more than the segmentation of tools into pro stills cameras and pro video cameras.

Leica removed video from the M10 due to photographers complaining. Old men huh!?

Yeah saw the 1D C, it has been on their website for ages and still not sold... It's a grade C so probably not in very good condition, but for £1850 you should definitely investigate.

Seems there is internal disagreement at Canon about how far to push the codec upgrade, or even just not upgrading it at all, despite having said they would. Poor form! -
Andrew....are you still doing a GH5 shooting guide?
Andrew Reid replied to Fritz Pierre's topic in Cameras
Yes, once the next firmware is out, so will the guide follow a few weeks after!
