This is the kind of extreme reaction that doesn't help the situation, it just fans the flames. I respect Jon's effort here, he's been a regular poster for nearly as long as I have, he has helped for countless days keep the forum in good shape, approve comments from new users, keep tabs on troublesome ones and keep away the spambots. He has posted his creative stuff, tests, Panasonic stuff especially, and there is no need for me to question his role at all. Don't forget there are 5 mods in total, it's not just Jon with all the power... jgharding, andylee, mtheory and me Maybe I should just remove the role of mod entirely and do it all myself if it is going to cause trouble... Either that, or people need to chill the fuck out. Sure, I agree Ed has had his moments of poor form, contrary opinions, argumentative positions, politics we may not agree with, and so on. It would be a boring forum if we all nodded in agreement with one another though! So by all means, we should argue, we should have it out on one-another, we should mow down bad ideas and criticise, but when all the competitive sport is said and done there should be some time left for the pub. BTW Ed has completely edited the OP Read it again, and it makes more sense. I think we are free to discuss B&H's ethical behaviour and lawsuits. As long as it is based on the facts and both sides of the story are heard and we don't go into vitriolic territory.

I am a bit disappointed because this thread has turned into an Ed vs everyone else situation, and yes some of it is his fault, but c'mon... http://www.eddaviddp.com Some superb work on here. And he has been using this forum for a very long time. I will miss him if he chooses to leave permanently. So whatever differences you guys forming a mob may have with him, this isn't the place to get personal and hound someone out. It was poor form from Ed, but there's no need to force a guy to back out of the forum permanently and completely overlook what he shoots and what he contributes.

Nope, Panasonic was first with affordable 4K. Sony was first with 1080/60p.... And that was affordable too. Nikon have always been a laggard, ever since the D90 they have lagged in video. They are still lagging now even with the D850.
-
Yes but really they were only first once out of about 20,000 lost opportunities. And when they were first, they screwed it up and left Canon to capitalise on video for about 5 years, creating the conditions for an entire new business (Cinema EOS) for their most competitive rival. So hardly a stunning performance from Nikon, me thinks Nice post though.

First, but crap! No, that was Canon with the 1D C. No, again that was Canon (1D C and 1D X) Except it doesn't work properly!

Canon's brand in photography is getting known for being behind on technology and too conservative. I can completely understand the business / customer / support reasons for not having raw video on a DSLR. But as a gesture of goodwill they should release a development platform camera for enthusiasts, which has a full SDK supplied with it on digital media, an open OS for Magic Lantern to fully develop the functionality, and to make features like raw video bullet proof reliable. And Canon's consumer division will NOT offer support for it. It's supplied as-is and not sold in regular shops to regular Joes. It would take minimum effort for Canon to do this and reap HUGE PR rewards, but they won't do it because A) not imaginative enough and B) it isn't a billion dollars of sales to pros.

I suppose it solves the problem of the stills camera part, as the D850 can do things, with nicer ergonomics, that a mirrorless camera can't on the stills front - optical viewfinder, 45MP, best AF system in the world from D5, all in one body... Add on video we already have on the A99 II, tweak the colour science and skintones to Nikon's taste, add flat profile instead of S-LOG, making the footage easier to grade, and you have reasons to buy it... but a lot of reasons not to as well, for example the fact the GH5 exists and soon probably the A7S3!

LukiLink project turns smartphones into an HDMI monitor

It's pretty normal on KickStarter for people to contract out the engineering work to, erm, engineers! Digital Bolex did it. evgenymagata's point here was that an off-the-shelf product is being relabelled and sold as original, which is simply not the case, as the circuit board, capabilities and app aren't the same and have been contracted out to engineers by the people with the ideas, which is exactly how KickStarter is supposed to work. Even if I KickStarted my film, I would not do every single role myself and play 5 acting parts Unless it was called The Room! -
He is most definitely a fascist, if you look at the facts they all stack up against Trump being anything else.

Sounds good to me. Well explained! -
I know that, I said so in the article - that pixel binning is better than line skipping. The A99 II, which I own, is a pixel binning 4K camera in full frame and I very much like the images I get from it. Depends on what method of pixel binning they use, as to the quality of the results. We are a long way past line skipping now, it died long ago.

The minimum offered by Sony!
-
Um, it's not about perfection... It's about paying for a full frame camera and expecting a FULL FRAME image! And the codec is inexcusable.

Is this the quote you're referring to? "As we've stated: it's largely unusable. It's not an easy problem to solve for Nikon either, given that not only does on-sensor PDAF come at an image cost they probably don't wish to sacrifice, but because most of their lenses have too noisy motors to allow for silent video AF anyway. This is a serious problem for Nikon. But not if you're looking for a stills camera. In which case, there isn't a camera that could beat the D850. Done. Period. Yeah I said it. And I don't even shoot Nikon these days..." It's 2017. I think a camera with unusable live-view AF is easily beaten for a lot of photographers, who use live-view a lot. I'd also suggest the 1D X Mk II and D5 are still superior professional photography rigs unless you need the extra resolution of the D850, and then you might want to wait to see what the Sony A7R III brings. As it is, the live-view stills features & live-view AF are pretty pants on the Nikon. It is held back by being a traditional DSLR. Not all stills shooters want to work that way any more. I think one of their user's replies puts it well - "Of course there are cameras that could beat the D850 for stills; making that beat-the-living-daylights-out-of-the-D850. If users need IBIS, or an EVF, the D850 is already out of the game. I'm a Nikon user & would love a NIkon with those features."

What about the app for it, isn't that an original creation? -
I am all for a bit of harmony. Would you like to be a mod Ed? I can do it, then at least you can be on an equal footing if one of your posts is deleted.

First impressions article - http://www.eoshd.com/2017/08/nikon-d850-video-mode-first-impressions-mixed-least-better-5d-mark-iv/ Check out the sample footage from Nikon on YouTube and the screen grabs - looks very respectable!

About the only thing the D850 offers over the D750 is 4K and 1080p 120fps slow-mo These basically came by default with the new Sony sensor tech. Nikon sketched out the specs they wanted and Sony gave it them. I wish they'd tried harder to design a genuine leap forwards. A mirror-up mode with EVF sliding in front of the OVF like the Fuii X100 and Dual Pixel AF would have transformed this camera not just for video shooters but for photographers as well. Is it much lighter than the D810? That was a brick.

I don't think forums are dying, one of the largest is Reddit and that has never been more popular or mainstream. Facebook discussions are a whisker away from YouTube comments - the use of real names doesn't seem to change anything. People are attacked and abused on Facebook and Twitter in far greater numbers than all of the camera forums put together! What the world needs to do is go offline and be productive... Then when they are back online, they can self-express in more productive ways as well, rather than shouting at one-another because of their different opinions. The internet has created a tribal culture, with echo chambers and mobs. Thanks Ed for starting a lively discussion... If we can all lighten up and see the fun in it or use some humour, it would be a nice way of glossing over our superficial differences and recognising the fact we're all humans with similar interests and if one of us ever got hurt, or needed help in real life, we'd step up.

With Google, YouTube and Facebook I've noticed a gradual change. The Facebook situation is pretty bad, because it's become Google's main rival and is how a lot of people now surf the net. The newsfeed is basically a big profit train for Facebook, so we have to pay Facebook just to reach our own followers. On YouTube, the clickbait infestation is getting worse because of increasing competition, clickbait has almost become the standard form of presentation - if your nearest rival is doing clickbait you have no choice but to present your content as clickbait as well... Otherwise it doesn't get seen. I don't know what YouTube have done to fix this - probably something, that then made it worse. I know they prefer long-form material, which has made the situation worse because the crap just gets drawn out longer and very concise and informative shorter stuff gets buried. Well done YouTube! Google, they are doing NAAAAAthing for the little guy... Basically 4 or 5 review sites per topic OWN the first page, and they're all SHIT. Advertorial, clickbait and downright crap. The situation needs kicking into touch otherwise people will start losing interest.

Would be good if one of the camera manufacturers put a power output on their camera battery grip for an external screen, which we could then place anywhere on the rig without worrying about power, extra batteries, cabling and all bulk. -
For me, it's a great shame the world seems to go from racial and religious division, through political division and onto cultural division so often, like a cycle, and it looks like we're going through one of those phases again, which leads to a world war. The first thing to happen is the mob mentality, where dissenting voices in the crowd are dismissed even if they might be reasonable and logical. Be it a far-left uprising or a far-right one, I hate all extremists. Fighting Nazis is very noble but there are quite a lot who now consider all conservatives or anybody slightly right of centre on certain issues to be flat out evil people. I don't buy that and the Google thing shows that there's a huge, uncontrollable politically correct mob at corporations who can't have an honest debate about certain subjects because they're taboo.

If the S5 supports USB video then the removable batteries will be a bonus. What's the most modern smartphone with removable back? Samsung Note 5? EDIT: ah nope.. Note 4. Still a very big OLED though but will it do USB video input? -
A good decision! 1. Speed Booster XL has the most full-frame-like look, unless you want to avoid vignetting on APS-C lenses then go for the Ultra. Also if you want the absolute best corner sharpness go for the Ultra. 2. Not tried the battery grip as the internal battery last ages and spares so easy to carry! Might improve ergonomics though. 3. The XLR hotshoe audio adapter? 4. 35-100 II... Nah. I'd go for the Olympus 12-100mm F4 instead. Run & gun with AF I take it? 5. Only if you need AF when re-framing a shot otherwise stick to Sigma 6. You don't need it, the screen is fine! Keep it simple. 7. Haha 8. Yes.

It would be interesting to see how long the phone lasts with the app open, screen on and phone turned to airplane mode... but if it's 3 or 4 hours then you have a charging break for 30 minutes (if the phone supports Quickcharge 2.0 it can really charge very fast) that would be ok and you could buy a spare phone for $300 to use whilst the other charges... Still a saving over buying an OLED 1080p field monitor. Come on... Be more positive.
