  1. Because time moves in a forwards direction! The 42MP sensor came out in 2015, it's practically 2014 tech! Thankfully Sony isn't Canon and they do go forwards rather than use the same sensor tech for 10 years. Or even backwards with 6D Mark II.
  2. The way the contrast detect based AF on the GH5 works is by cranking the sensor to frame rates of 240fps, maybe even higher, and very CPU intensive analysing of bokeh and depth of field (DFD mode). So you can't expect AF to be as fast at 24p in video mode as it is in stills mode. What Panasonic need to do is get Dual Pixel AF technology on the sensor. It is the only reliable way of doing good AF for filmmakers. The phase-detect A6500 route is a dead-end, it's just not bomb proof enough. It hardly ever tracks reliably, especially in low light. Meanwhile good old manual focus has resulted in many classic films, so I suggest we stop being so lazy and use that instead
  3. So about the workflow... If you wanted to shoot RAW, you would then convert to DNG and import the folder to Resolve... Anyone got a different plan?
  4. Still don't really understand how this situation came about. Apple have promoted cameras before, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera for instance because of Thunderbolt. Is Apple trying to court pro users again? Been a while.

  7. It has amazing dynamic range even in Rec.709. It has remarkably low rolling shutter compared to Sony. The 10bit files are amazing in low light with lots of 'depth' and richness to the shadows. It helps that it's so good in low light anyway with very clean ISO 3200. Tons of features, I will write a guide about it but it will take a while. Review coming soon, I know it's been ages but I will get round to it!

  9. The original creator's instructions are in the Readme.txt file as part of the download (links below), all credit goes to the hack dev. You must read this before installation. However I thought I might summarise how to get started here in a sticky post to save searching for help (if you need it) in the long threads. PREPARE CAMERA 1. Ensure fully charged battery 2. In the main menu, ensure Auto Display off = 5 minutes and Power Save = 10 minutes 3. In the main menu, ensure Touch Operation = on 4. Ensure firmware is version 1.41 for the NX1 (you can view this in the main menu under the option Device Information). If older, update firmware according to Samsung's instructions online or via Wifi in the camera menus. 5. Format a memory card in-camera 6. Turn off bluetooth and wifi, set mode dial to M PREPARE THE NX-ON-WAKE PATCH 1. From the following link download nx-on-wake.zip https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/nx-on-wake/nx-on-wake.zip 2. Extract all files in nx-on-wake.zip to the ROOT directory of your SD card. 3. Insert the SD card into the camera, turn on the camera and wait 4. A touch screen menu appears to enter a "Magic Number". This is in the Readme.txt, to ensure you have read it. Please look at that document carefully for the 6 digits. I found "357669" but check to see if different. 5. Message "Thanks, preparing the ground" will appear and the display will go blank momentarily. Green light begins to flash... WAIT AT LEAST 5 MINUTES 6. Leaving the camera powered on, pull the battery out and wait 10 seconds, then put the battery back in. WAIT AT LEAST 4 MINUTES 7. Turn off the camera using the power switch. 8. Pull the battery, wait 5 seconds and put the battery back in. Turn on the camera. 9. Look at the green LED, you will see it blink 4 times (one long and three short blinks), to confirm everything went ok. 10. Turn off the camera and remove the SD card. INSTALL THE MAIN HACK 1. Download nx-patch.zip from https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/tree/master/video-bitrate-mods/nx-patch 2. Delete the all the nx-wake related files and folders from the SD card 3. Extract the nx-patch zip and place everything in the root directory of your SD card 4. Insert card into camera, turn on the camera and wait for the 'Please wait, installing...' message and for it to do its thing 5. Hack should now be activated, turn off/on camera and you can enter the hack menus by rapidly double-pressing the LCD illumination button on the NX1 6. In the hack menus (double-press LCD illumination button), you can select bitrates, and change Pro1 from 80 to an even higher value like 160 7. Press the "Make persistent" option to save any modifications so they remain on the camera at next cold boot 8. Please make sure you have the fastest possible SD card for Pro bitrate 4K recording (80Mbit to 160Mbit). Happy shooting!
  10. It will certainly be pixel binned 4K like Fuji X-T20 and A7R II. When done well like on the A99 II it can look very nice. And Nikon's flat profile / colour / processing pipeline is very good. Hopefully they won't forget to put the Super 35mm 6K oversampled crop mode on there... HINT HINT!
  11. No shame in pixel binning if done right. The Sony A99 II does very detailed 120fps from a 42MP sensor! It has hardly any moire. Don't know what the RX100 IV and V do in 120fps but the quality is the same as the full pixel readout 1080p mode. A full pixel readout is still binned for 1080p... Just on the image processor, not the sensor.

  13. It's a weird announcement because it kills their D810 sales. They have clearly done it to try to get people to wait for the D850 instead of some beast from a competitor that they know is coming out soon.
  14. Probably in less than a year. Even some cameras in 2009 were recording unlimited 250fps... Not 1080p though
  15. That's what white balance does. It shifts the colour balance of the camera to compensate for different temperatures of light. If you don't know how to use white balance, just set it to auto. Your screen is emitting predominantly only one colour of blue wavelength light from the backlighting, no matter what picture overall you see on the display.
  16. The monitor you are pointing the camera at cannot be used to set the white balance, because it sends out a bunch of blue wavelength LED light from the backlight. You need to set the white balance off real subjects. Use various situations like direct sunlight, cloudy weather, shade and indoor light at various positions in a room to get the desired white balances. Or just use the Kelvin preset and dial in the K you need for a particular scene. If you prefer, just use AWB instead.

  18. 28mm * 5 = 140mm They are using optics to achieve that even though they're several prime lenses, not a traditional optical zoom. So in my opinion it does have an optical zoom. 52MP is a bonus as well. The clickbate media speak like it's in the shops. Actually it's only pre-orders that have gone out (after a BIG wait) and the camera won't start shipping properly until Christmas!
  19. What's with the lens positioning? Looks random! Portable full frame quality is already here... RX1 II But this could be nice if it works properly and is affordable... Love that it makes practically a 28-150mm F2 portable
