  1. What about the app for it, isn't that an original creation?
  2. I am all for a bit of harmony. Would you like to be a mod Ed? I can do it, then at least you can be on an equal footing if one of your posts is deleted.
  3. First impressions article - http://www.eoshd.com/2017/08/nikon-d850-video-mode-first-impressions-mixed-least-better-5d-mark-iv/ Check out the sample footage from Nikon on YouTube and the screen grabs - looks very respectable!
  4. About the only thing the D850 offers over the D750 is 4K and 1080p 120fps slow-mo These basically came by default with the new Sony sensor tech. Nikon sketched out the specs they wanted and Sony gave it them. I wish they'd tried harder to design a genuine leap forwards. A mirror-up mode with EVF sliding in front of the OVF like the Fuii X100 and Dual Pixel AF would have transformed this camera not just for video shooters but for photographers as well. Is it much lighter than the D810? That was a brick.
  5. I don't think forums are dying, one of the largest is Reddit and that has never been more popular or mainstream. Facebook discussions are a whisker away from YouTube comments - the use of real names doesn't seem to change anything. People are attacked and abused on Facebook and Twitter in far greater numbers than all of the camera forums put together! What the world needs to do is go offline and be productive... Then when they are back online, they can self-express in more productive ways as well, rather than shouting at one-another because of their different opinions. The internet has created a tribal culture, with echo chambers and mobs. Thanks Ed for starting a lively discussion... If we can all lighten up and see the fun in it or use some humour, it would be a nice way of glossing over our superficial differences and recognising the fact we're all humans with similar interests and if one of us ever got hurt, or needed help in real life, we'd step up.
  6. With Google, YouTube and Facebook I've noticed a gradual change. The Facebook situation is pretty bad, because it's become Google's main rival and is how a lot of people now surf the net. The newsfeed is basically a big profit train for Facebook, so we have to pay Facebook just to reach our own followers. On YouTube, the clickbait infestation is getting worse because of increasing competition, clickbait has almost become the standard form of presentation - if your nearest rival is doing clickbait you have no choice but to present your content as clickbait as well... Otherwise it doesn't get seen. I don't know what YouTube have done to fix this - probably something, that then made it worse. I know they prefer long-form material, which has made the situation worse because the crap just gets drawn out longer and very concise and informative shorter stuff gets buried. Well done YouTube! Google, they are doing NAAAAAthing for the little guy... Basically 4 or 5 review sites per topic OWN the first page, and they're all SHIT. Advertorial, clickbait and downright crap. The situation needs kicking into touch otherwise people will start losing interest.
  7. Would be good if one of the camera manufacturers put a power output on their camera battery grip for an external screen, which we could then place anywhere on the rig without worrying about power, extra batteries, cabling and all bulk.
  8. For me, it's a great shame the world seems to go from racial and religious division, through political division and onto cultural division so often, like a cycle, and it looks like we're going through one of those phases again, which leads to a world war. The first thing to happen is the mob mentality, where dissenting voices in the crowd are dismissed even if they might be reasonable and logical. Be it a far-left uprising or a far-right one, I hate all extremists. Fighting Nazis is very noble but there are quite a lot who now consider all conservatives or anybody slightly right of centre on certain issues to be flat out evil people. I don't buy that and the Google thing shows that there's a huge, uncontrollable politically correct mob at corporations who can't have an honest debate about certain subjects because they're taboo.
  9. If the S5 supports USB video then the removable batteries will be a bonus. What's the most modern smartphone with removable back? Samsung Note 5? EDIT: ah nope.. Note 4. Still a very big OLED though but will it do USB video input?
  10. A good decision! 1. Speed Booster XL has the most full-frame-like look, unless you want to avoid vignetting on APS-C lenses then go for the Ultra. Also if you want the absolute best corner sharpness go for the Ultra. 2. Not tried the battery grip as the internal battery last ages and spares so easy to carry! Might improve ergonomics though. 3. The XLR hotshoe audio adapter? 4. 35-100 II... Nah. I'd go for the Olympus 12-100mm F4 instead. Run & gun with AF I take it? 5. Only if you need AF when re-framing a shot otherwise stick to Sigma 6. You don't need it, the screen is fine! Keep it simple. 7. Haha 8. Yes.
  11. It would be interesting to see how long the phone lasts with the app open, screen on and phone turned to airplane mode... but if it's 3 or 4 hours then you have a charging break for 30 minutes (if the phone supports Quickcharge 2.0 it can really charge very fast) that would be ok and you could buy a spare phone for $300 to use whilst the other charges... Still a saving over buying an OLED 1080p field monitor. Come on... Be more positive.
  12. I am in general surprised how none of the Japanese beasts have used the method in crop sensor glass... Surely a good way to design the lens itself, never mind having one in the camera! They should all be on the phone to Brian Caldwell!
  13. Maybe even better latency with the latest smartphones like Samsung S8+? I'll see if I can test one!
  14. If, like me you have ever wanted to use the OLED screen of your lovely thin and light smartphone as an HDMI monitor for your camera, you are now officially in luck. The LukiLink will give you that long-awaited HDMI input. Read the full article
  15. F mount is only a couple of mm more than Canon EF. Also, F mount speed boosters already exist and fit the same glass as the Canon ones. Nope, Nikon was really pushing the optics here and it would be fascinating to give it another go now with the superior optics technology.
  16. Developed together with Fujifilm - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_E_series "Its unique optical system bundles the light of the full frame lenses to the small 2/3 inch CCD sensor. That gives approximately 4 stops more light at the small sensor, therefore delivering an exceptional (for that time) minimum sensitivity of 800 and maximum 3200 ISO, which remains usable for press and news use." They fitted a 36 x 24mm full frame image into a 2/3" sensor! The E series uses a unique additional optical system that enables the small sensor to capture the field of view of a 35mm film, with a crop factor of 1. This comes not at the expense of the lightness of the lenses, because the light is bundled to the  2⁄3 inch CCD sensor with approximately  1⁄16 smaller area. The result is approximately 4 stops (24 = 16) more light at the small sensor compared to a full-frame sensor. Therefore the camera has a minimum full-frame sensitivity of ISO800 which is equivalent to ISO 50 at  2⁄3 inch. As a result the noise of the camera at ISO 800 full-frame is equivalent to ISO 50 of the  2⁄3 inch CCD sensor. Nikon could not reduce sensitivity below 800 ISO full-frame, because the little sensor will be overexposed below 50 ISO. I am sure the corners are soft but heck would love to see a modern version of a focal reducer this dramatic for Micro Four Thirds Medium format on the GH5 anyone?
  17. Looks like a Russian lens. The Communists have eaten the sun!
  18. I am not sure I'd leave my girlfriend to hook up with you Panny By the way I found some very nice deals on wide angle adapters at Visual Impact but they are in the UK. I am sure they ship to Berlin though! Fuji, Optex, Sony, all pro stuff and high quality between £70 to 300 http://www.visuals.co.uk/used-items/used/lenses-used.html?___SID=U&dir=desc&order=price&p=3 I saw the Soligor at Foto Braune, he also had a nice Pentax mount 28mm F2 which he let me take home to try out... for free. I didn't go for it as it doesn't fit Speed Booster due to the aperture lever sticking out, but it's ok on a Sony A7 body. Nice optics but the build was as the price tag! There is a Distagon 28mm F2.0, the famous "Hollywood" Zeiss at Foto Mayer for 700 euros if you're feeling rich!
  19. Is that Bush on the phone ordering a nuclear eclipse? Wondering if I can get my Sony ready for that. By then they might have it built in?! I did a timelapse of the meteor shower recently with the Leica SL and old version Noctilux. That lens even at F1 is surprisingly sharp and several bits of space debris were successfully detected. A good job it burned up before hitting the lens. I would do my next timelapse on the Hasselblad but I think the shutter might fall off after 12 shots
  20. Good chance for some amazing footage today in the US! I would like to see what you've got, as being in England I will miss it. Jealous http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-40657793
  21. Good wide angle adapters are quite rare but it's always worth checking the usual places in Berlin like Foto Braune, Foto Mayer and others who stock used stuff. The only good one I have ever used (unless you count anamorphic Panasonic LA7200!) has been the Dog Schnidt Optiks FF38. You might want to contact Rich Gale and see if he can sell you one. It's very good Schott glass. http://www.eoshd.com/2015/02/dog-schidt-optiks-ff58-flare-factory-58-pl-mount-review/ I shot this footage with it on the front of his FF58 which is based on the Helios 44-M 58mm F2 I have it in Berlin but since I've only got one and I don't want to sell it as it was a gift from Richard, you're out of luck there Panny
  22. In the UK the other day there was a news piece on this guy... Karl Popper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance It's interesting because it shows the paradox of today's liberal society... The US society is tolerant enough to allow the display of nazi flags outside houses under free speech laws and right wing protests in the streets under expensive police escorts, and it's tolerant enough to allow these people to arm themselves with several automatic weapons at once. The more tolerant we become, the more the door opens to the intolerant ones, the more freedom they have to wreak havoc and destroy tolerance. So Karl Popper argued (in 1945 no less) that for a society to be truly tolerant it has to be "intolerant of intolerance". I suppose in the case Ed raised of alleged discrimination by a photo company, we shouldn't tolerate it, he's right on that. But I am also against building a wall between us and every single person in the company because of the wrongdoings of a few of their management, and I still really don't know if Ed is talking about a shop or a manufacturer. I suppose the point of Ed's post was to get us all talking and I'm fine with a bit of politics every now and again. I just don't agree that race has much to do with talking about cameras. It's a privilege but not just a white one.
  23. It's not political. You can be white, upper middle class and be creative without guilt. Political? It is what you make it. Sometimes political is good. From the outside, what is happening in the US at the moment is shocking. Tribal. What is the photo company? Names!
  24. There's already been an 8K resolution smartphone camera... 41MP Nokia PureView 808 with 1" sensor. The problem for Nikon is twofold... They haven't delivered a compelling innovative camera for enthusiasts... The Df was a disaster. Their enthusiast mirrorless is nowhere. Their lack of dual pixel af a real problem too. Consumers have moved onto phones, but Nikon have showed zero expertise or understanding of the online services and apps market.
  25. Definitely more CCD / film like than the usual CMOS! I find the Sigma is nicest when the white balance is set a little bit cooler for daylight than I'd otherwise do on a normal camera... It seems to bring out more colour. The grass has so much going on... autumnal tones, mint, all sorts, which are missing in action on a Sony!
