Sony A6300 review (rolling) - Striking image but nagging issues
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's interesting. I avoided shooting SLOG this time. Went for Cine4 and graded with FilmConvert, Kodak, A7S II profile. Colour definitely seems nice. -
The Canon C300 Mark II appears to have faulty firmware, which will need a fix for it to be bullet-proof on a shoot. Bright highlights burn to black in certain situations (such as car headlights). Read the full blog post here

Erm, no. You're better off shooting 1080p or even 720p. Just wait for it to improve (if that is possible) or see what interesting things can be done with the 4K/1080p.

If anyone else wants to test it, here's the shell files from my card Just unzip, put all the files on the root of your card and start the camera, hit video record (ignore the menus, they won't change to say 2.5k). Also please check out Otto's readme so you can easily understand what the shell files are doing and how they link together https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/README.md nx500-2-5k-patch.zip

Let's tease out and document the full functionality of the prefman tool, what settings it can change and how... https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/Prefman_tool.md

Yes huge thanks to Otto, amazing work. I wonder if the Magic Lantern guys might want to collaborate with him on it?

I see the NX1 and NX500 have an MJPEG codec, but it's only used for the 640x480 recording mode. But the codec is there, right? Maybe we could persuade it to record at a higher resolution and bitrate in 4:2:2 like the Canon 1D C. (Ok, wild leap there, but any improvement would be an interesting discovery). Also the silent shutter, in this mode it does raw from a rolling shutter scan of the sensor, just like a video mode... the raw data must be lurking in the buffer somewhere whilst it runs in video mode... now what we need is a genius to dive in a grab it

I've tried it. It's very early days with this mode I think. The quality is just not there yet, very highly compressed and soft. Once new settings are discovered I am sure it will improve! The 2.5K Samsung originally had on the pre-production model was pretty good quality and the setting must be lurking in there somewhere.

Tim Smith says we should expect to see "low cost, high quality offerings", plus a "surprise" from Canon themselves at the show, which starts April 16th 2016. Read the blog post here

Oh yeah! Who can forget THAT!?
-
Discussion NX500, etc. also welcome.
-
NX1 forum can be for all the Samsung cameras for now.

Things are moving fast guys. I've created a sub-forum for any subjects which might require a separate thread. Regarding compression on uploads or attachments, let me know if this is a problem and I will look into it. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/forum/25-samsung-nx1-hack/

Apparently BM specced it out themselves, it's a custom chip not an off the shelf one. There's a reason none of the major manufacturers are using global shutter apart from Sony as seemingly a weird one off on the F55. It is a long way off yet when it comes to image quality.

I think 4K 24p Super 35 -> to the ultimate 1080p in post for $1k is a pretty good deal to be honest.
-
So just shoot 4K then! What's the problem?
-
Seems more like a hardware issue to me, just claim under the warranty or take it back to the store.
-
Good news! Blackmagic have sent me one for review, should be here any day now!

5D mark4 will be better at video than 1DX mark2
Andrew Reid replied to Rinad Amir's topic in Cameras
Maybe they will call it the 5D4K and it'll have no raw stills, just JPEGs and the guys on the DPR forum will go APE SHIT That would be so amusing -

I hope they hurry up and release it then, because I am seriously considering the 1D X Mark II for video. If the 5D Mark III has the same AF system but full frame image 4K, Canon LOG and articulated screen it would be seriously good. This is Canon though so I would take just one of the above
