1. Ike007 simplifies too much but his main point is actually right. A very good fast prime shot wide open, if it is extremely sharp, really helps a camera which has poor resolution and a ton of aliasing. It is the deep depth of field wide angle shots where these cameras fall down, not so much the shallow DOF stuff. 5D Mark III is a different camera altogether with the 135mm F2L for example. But at 24mm F8, focused at infinity it sucks.
2. For me this is also all very disappointing, I think a cleanly resolved image is top of the list. If your stills are shoddy at the per pixel level, you don't rack up the sales, and so I have no idea why it isn't a top priority for Sony in video mode - especially when they went to so much effort on the general video orientated specs list.
3. Thanks to a chance encounter I was able to very briefly try a GH3 this week in Barcelona. The camera was on loan from Panasonic and not available to the public to try, it was part of the private beta test program but they very kindly let me give my impressions of it after a brief 20 minute play with the camera behind closed doors. Again this was not the final camera but it had some interesting tweaks compared to the models Panasonic brought to Photokina last month.
4. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera hasn't shipped in volume yet but already there is talk of quite an extensively revised camera according to my good friend 43Rumors. If this is true (and I stress - IF!!) then I have mixed feelings because I think it is WAY too soon to be doing a 'Blackmagic Cinema Camera V1.5' in early 2013, effectively making your existing cameras obsolete before they have even shipped.
5. An exploded view of the A99 at Photokina Whilst I was able to record some footage from the Sony A99 at Photokina I didn't really have any spare time to do much with one. The camera to me seems a little bit disappointing on the image quality front with line skipping resulting in quite heavy moire and aliasing. Not acceptable in 2012. Johnnie (who I had the pleasure of finally meeting at Photokina) is a freelance BBC cameraman and editor based in Vienna. His comments on the new A99 are mixed (as are my feelings about the camera).
6.
Wow, it's weird how much we've been attacked lately. And it's not even to advertise penis pills either. ;-) Time to install capcha in the new user registration I guess.
There's already a capcha system in place on the new registrations. I'm open to people volunteering to become mods.
7. The solution for the MFT camera, as written in the article, is the same cage built around a cinema lens mount adapter (PL, etc). Please read it
8. I don't understand the strange comments about the aesthetics. It is striking and I suppose that divides people but I am on the side of the looks, it is beautiful. Show me your rare wood handles for your plastic DSLR made in China!!
9. One of the highlights of Photokina 2012 was meeting up with SLR Magic, the small but nimble optics company based in Hong Kong. They brought out one of the first proper fast wide lenses for Micro Four Thirds (the 12mm F1.6) by listening to demand and acting swiftly. Now they are building high end super-fast primes which are optimised for filmmakers as well as photographers.
10. Here's an ingenious cage solution for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera by my neighbours in Berlin - ReWo. Rather than a bulky cage which wraps around the entire camera, ReWo have chosen to form their cage around the mount tube. Yes finally that strange EF tube has a use! The cage provides mounting points for ReWo's wood handles via Arri rosettes, top handle, mounting points for accessories via 1/4" and 3/8" threads and a 15mm rods block.
11. I took some on my card at Photokina, full 1080p ALL-I 25p. Nothing very interesting, looks same as the 5D Mark III - didn't notice any moire.
12. Leica revealed their new M series camera at Photokina 2012. It marks the first time video has been implemented on a Leica M, with a brand new full frame 35mm CMOS sensor developed in Europe by CMOSIS. EOSHD went along to interview Product Manager for the M-System Jesko Von Oeynhausen to find out what it means for filmmakers. Please note that the camera is at the moment a pre-production camera (firmware version 0.0.20.1) with an expected list price of €6200.
13.
From this grab, it seems it is just your monitor that is clipping. Non-calibrated Apple screens are really bad, they are too contrasty, a crush the black by a big margin. Not speaking of being glossy glass. On my calibrated Nec LCD2490WUXi, the left image is correct. No black crushed and - as there is any - no highlight clipped. You should really look to calibrate your screen, or get a better one.
The monitor calibration did help the blacks but now other aspects of my display are a little crazy and it is too bright. The skin tones on the juggler's face issue - one is clearly awful and the other much better - any idea what causes that?
14. For reference this is the levels problem I am still having with the GH2 after all these years, and now GH3. Why does my Mac not recognise that GH2 footage should be 16-235 not 0-255? Quicktime treats it as 0-255 as well, crushed blacks and blown highlights. Full resolution screen grab: http://www.eoshd.com/uploads/gh2-levels.jpg
15.
Well. Andrew. I made some screen grabs. I wish you'd clarify the big variances in the Juggler's skin tones. Was that due to different angles/lighting or did you grade clips differently?
Interestingly, the yellow skin tones are from AVCHD mode I think, and the better skin tones are ALL-I. 90% sure I have that right, will have to check and confirm later, it might be the other way round.
16.
What lens was used for this footage?
Lumix 12-35mm F2.8 X. Very very sharp lens.
17. This week I was loaned a GH3 body for a short time at Photokna by Panasonic. This test footage was shot in 1080/25p ALL-I mode at 72Mbit, with two slow mo-sequences of Pocahontas and the juggler shot in AVCHD 1080/50p at 50Mbit. I also had a go at grading the GH3 footage with Peter Patten of Apple.
18. Moire and aliasing is certainly there on the D600 as much as the D800. Seems similar looking at my footage.
19. Business is business I suppose. But I think it could backfire. If you look at how the Hasselblad Lunar went down at Photokina, a NEX 7 with fancy trimmings is not worth 5k. The 1D C actually IS worth the money. But what a shame it is not even better, with some more customisation and spec creep it would mean a better product for us and less margin for Canon. Canon chose margin. No peaking, no 25p, etc, etc. They have done the same thing with the Canon C300 / C100 too. Notice that the hardware could be identical there too. And it is just the firmware that has changed to cripple the codec on the C100. By the way, HDMI on that is 4-2-2 and uncompressed so if you want a C300 for less money you know what to do.
20.
I'm no hardware engineer, but what's to stop the ML guys from downloading the firmware from the 1DC, making a few tweaks, and loading it onto the 1DX? Missing a headphone jack still, so kind of worthless as a documentary or run and gun camera, but for narrative or studio work it would be fine.
It is likely very encrypted and protected by other methods too.
21. There might be a different AA filter design on the 1D C but other than that, same camera hardware, just tweaks and firmware added.
22.
So that means...? I guess it means he wants to prioritize quality over functionality, ie. no multi-aspect sensor? Great interview. Cool to talk to someone who doesn't speak your language but is clearly a very brainy person.
Yes that is correct. Image quality was priority over multi-aspect. He was incredibly intelligent, his notepad left me almost speechless at the end.
23. I had a hands-on with the Canon 1D C today and was allowed to shoot some footage. I also had a improtum talk to a Canon Europe product manager who was very open and honest about Canon's approach with this camera, but what he said rather shocked me.
24. I have a LOT more of Pocahontas thanks to SLR Magic's new prototype F0.95 lens ;)
