A mechanical designer on the Panasonic L1 back in the Four Thirds days, that camera is now fondly rememberd for a beautiful optical viewfinder, Leica M style build and cutting edge design. Inoue also worked at Minolta before joining Team Lumix. I caught up with Inoue yesterday at Photokina to ask him about the design and technical workings of the new Panasonic GH3 at Photokina in Germany.

Man... I thought he'd shot it with an Alexa. Was stunned when he said GH2. Wasn't even hacked. The 720/60p mode on that camera is probably the best there is. But also all credit to him, his shot selection and choice of lenses was extremely good.

It is definitely not soft. But the aliasing is a bit D800-like and a worry.
Wondering if Telecrop mode has been improved noise-wise and if accessable when using hdmi out. Thanks for all your hard work.
Good points! Will test this tomorrow.

HDMI is uncompressed 4-2-0 I didn't have a Ninja with me to test, the Ninja was busy beating up Philip. Nor did I have my Zacuto EVF to hand but this is pretty solid info - Slashcam guys know their stuff http://www.43rumors.com/gh3-info-no-multiaspect-sensor-uncompressed-hdmi-out-with-420/

Clone me and I'll consider it. As far as the filming of reviews go. Philip is very good at that, his reviews are almost an event in themselves. But I prefer to write, I find often coming across info on the web and not having the time to absorb a video. It is quicker to read a blog post.

I was then let loose with the camera to shoot some test footage in 1080/25p ALL-I and 50Mbit 1080/50p mode. This camera was running firmware version v0.4 and so by no means final yet. What I found impressed me.
I suspect that Nikon & Canon just got the same answers from the extensive marketing research & focus groups that these vast corporations use to find out what consumers really want.
Or hire a Steve Jobs. Much better. -
Described by Panasonic as a semi-professional 'creative HD hybrid' and a flagship model for the company, the Panasonic GH3 is finally here - 2 years after the GH2 arrived. The official unveiling answers some of the mysteries too.

The full frame Canon 6D has just been formally unveiled as Photokina opens for the press. A competitor to the Nikon D600 (also to be unveiled today)Â this is a near identical camera to the 5D Mark III in many respects especially video it seems. But like the 60D compared to the 7D, it is cheaper and smaller. It features a new 20MP sensor but a similar (if not identical) DIGIC 5+ processor of the 5D Mark III. It has built in WiFi and GPS unlike the bigger brother. The only real compromises seem to be in the AF system, lack of 100% viewfinder, lack of headphone jack, slightly slower burst rate for stills and lack of left side button panel.

Genesis - is this the Reverie moment for the GH3?
No it did not and that bit of strong misinformation was further perpetuated by this site as well.
More like it was perpetuated by people misunderstanding the article and all the words. Misinterpreting information is very common. At no point did I say on the blog that the GH2 was technically superior to an Alexa, Epic or F65 in the Zacuto shootout. -
Probably just run of the mill mild corporate espionage. There's no way that in this day and age Canon and Nikon would be able to hide such major projects from each other.
If it is 'mild' espionage in terms of solid evidence that one of the companies is producing a certain kind of product, then yes. -
what exactly would be suspicious about it?
Canon and Nikon are supposed to be separate companies. Everyone who knows about their cameras as they are being planned or developed are under an NDA. As far as I know, a company doesn't make a massive product decision based on rumours or whispers so if a Nikon guy came to a Canon guy in a Tokyo pub and said "hey we're making a cut price full frame DSLR!" I don't think Canon would suddenly create a 6D. But it could just be a coincidence. They are matching each other at every step. It seems the D800 caught Canon unawares in the high megapixel territories - they don't have an answer to that yet. -
Cameraboy Some speculation. Would that lead to the sort of softness we see in Genesis do you think? Maybe its got a filter for moire and aliasing that adds to the softening we have seen?
I am amazed people don't know the difference between 7Mbit and 72mbit. VIMEO IS A 7MBIT STREAM!! It was 720p even, until yesterday evening. Of course it looks soft and macro blocked and crushed. -

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Sony sensor is 16.1MP effective, 16.9MP in total. -

Regarding the sensor, the partially complete specs at Samy's hint at multi-aspect ratio, made by Panasonic. This Sony sensor rumour is just that, a rumour. I'll try and explore this a little more at Photokina and dive into the details, like whether it still has a 1:1 crop mode, whether the HDMI is uncompressed 4:2:2, etc. The specs say 17.20MP total pixels, 16.05MP effective. It then says '17.3 x 13.00mm IN 4/3 MODE' suggesting the sensor size changes to 19 x 10.5mm in 16:9 mode like the GH2. -

Yes cinema Pierre, like that screened at the Skywalker Ranch for Coppola. You don't know it doesn't have a flat profile yet. You don't know if it looks better than the GH2 yet because you're judging massively compressed web footage at 7Mbit - not ALL-I 72mbit 1080p. Muppet post of the year? -
Full GH3 image and specs leak. And you can preorder the GH3 at Samys!
Andrew Reid replied to Matt's topic in Cameras
I can't believe some people are complaining about the $1299 price tag. Have you forgotten what you're getting and what a big step this is up from the GH2? Blackmagic is considered a bargain at $3000, and it is. But the GH3 has 1080/60p, a larger sensor, stills, swappable internal battery, better low light performance, is smaller and lighter, likely better handling, more physical controls, the list goes on. And next to the Blackmagic after you've graded raw, ALL-I 72Mbit H.264 stands up very well with a fine grain of noise and as much detail. What the BM does better is 2.5K resolution, the advantages of raw for grading and likely an extra stop of dynamic range. Very different cameras but if the BM is a bargain then the GH3 bloody well certainly is. I love both personally even though I've not used either yet. My view may swing one way or another once I do. -
Thanks Gary. The dealers seem to be making the best of the 2 units the UK received. I'm in Germany then Croatia until October so I won't be dropping in on Jigsaw24, I just want the shipping to start properly.

The skin tones look awful because you're watching a 7Mbit stream. That is one hell of a compression! Wait for Monday and hopefully Philip will be able to turn on the download option.
