Andrew... Please Please Please try this out! :) [/quote] Quickly tried it with my Iscorama 36 and it works well. Set MF to infinity, focus with the anamorphic. I'll try it with LA7200 later. I had that mounted on the HX9v just fine. But the MF ring on the RX100 stops me from doing the same trick here. You'd need something that holds the anamorphic on set of rails and for the RX100 to sit on a quick release plate. Certainly doable, I will continue to explore...

Quick update - Handheld Twilight is a revelation for low light stills on this cam. Had a chance to use that mode more tonight and the sharpness and lack of noise is something to behold at F1.8. Damn I love this camera.

That only applies to one continuously running clip not your entire shoot which can be as long as the cards you have with you allow for.

[/quote] DSLRs are not ideal for your type of shooting but you can easily get around this issue by having more than one camera. It is better to cover a live event with more than one angle anyway. I certainly wouldn't want to sit through over 30 minutes of one shot, would you? 35mm film had a reel running time of 12 minutes so 30 minutes is actually better than the Hollywood recording format ;) I'd consider a camcorder instead, and a DSLR or RX100 for some cut-away beauty shots to mix in with the constantly running stuff.

I agree, don't wait - it is likely to be December before it actually comes into plentiful stock even if it is announced as expected at Photokina in September.

I am really not (yet...) convinced. The sensor - S35, 4k, global shutter - does not exist in the camera yet as far as I can tell. And global shutter is too ambitious for the near future. It is not market ready tech yet. The machine vision sensors with global shutters are all small and compromise dynamic range & colour for the global readout. I'd rather have a fast rolling shutter than screw tonality and low light. It tells you something that the most expensive cinema cameras available today have rolling shutters as well - even the Sony F65, which has a mechanical shutter avoids global shutter. When it is market ready, the mythical sensor which is the headline spec of this camera, will be great. At $10,000, I'd rather wait and see what Sony come up with recorder wise for the FS700. So it is actually not even that unique. The FS700 has 14 stops of DR so I cannot see this being a whole new ball game. $3000 for raw 2.5K which isn't vapour ware is exciting (Blackmagic). It depends where Canon are positioning it. Above Rebel or below it? For me it would be frustrating to see a mirrorless below it in the range, because as we all realise - the mirrorless technology is the future and only the higher end products do it justice. It is bad for future technology like electronic shutter, EVF, etc. to not push this in a high end flagship. Canon will need this stuff for a full frame model eventually and they will be behind because they didn't see the value in pushing it, only the value of doing a "me-to" El Cheapo mirrorless camera for their girlfriends.

This would be pretty disappointing as the sensor in that camera is based on 3 year old technology with a slow readout so the video mode was rather poor. Now the word on the street according to [url="http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/getting-closer-to-the-canon-event-aps-c-mirrorless-with-new-mount/"]Mirrorless Rumors[/url] is that Canon are (sensibly in my view!) opting for an APS-C sized sensor in the new camera, making it a better match to their EFS lenses which can be used via an adapter. The mount could also form the basis for a lower end pro video offering as APS-C is approximately Super 35mm sized in the film world. In my view it makes no sense to have a Four Thirds sized sensor in the Canon mirrorless because it will change the field of view of Canon's EFS lenses. I know the big attraction of using a Canon mirrorless is to still have that option of so much existing EFS glass. Canon't won't compromise that. The challenge with the APS-C sized sensor is similar to the one Sony faces with E-Mount on the NEX mirrorless system - making small lenses for it. Now Sony's consumer mirrorless mount also made its way onto their pro video cameras like the FS100 and FS700 so it would be a smart move for Canon to do a mirrorless lens mount supporting a Super 35mm sized sensor, which is similar to APS-C. Panasonic's mistake was to base their AF100 around a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, so that the lenses and sensor were not cinema standard in terms of field of view. When a DP uses a PL mount lens on a AF100 they cannot think in terms of standard Super 35mm focal lengths. I think if Canon push out a high end mirrorless system it could shoot great video, like the GH2. Anything less will be a disappointment, and a system based around a G1X with interchangeable lenses will be a Nikon 1 series like disaster. I'm currently using the Sony RX100 and that is effectively a replacement for several important rival cameras - the Canon G1X, S100, Fuji X10, Nikon J1, V1 and even Sony's own lower end NEX mirrorless cameras for certain people. The Micro Four Thirds kit lenses are the best kit lenses. Far better than what you get as standard with Canon and Nikon low end. I have a $199 Olympus 40-150mm telephoto, the stabiliser when used in-body with the E-M5 is better than with the $800 100-300mm Panasonic OIS.

10x more expensive... That is supply and demand for you :) What a bugger. The Iscoramas used to go for £200. I got my Centa Vision 2x for £100, from someone bored of using it to project things against a wall. I've been searching for the same ever since but eBay's completed items search ruins it all!!

It is the OIS. It can occasionally 'leap' and then settle. It isn't perfect on that lens, nor is the rubber grip on the zoom barrel which tends to come loose. Unless you really need the zoom in one unit with such coverage, please do yourself a favour and sell it for some decent fast primes. Shooting at F14 on such a nice large sensor is rather pointless as is the slow F4 end, and you may as well get a camcorder!

As an all round cinema shooter, no it is not worth replacing a GH2. But as a stills shooter and handheld footage camera with no rig, it is far better in those respects. Also the OLED screen, handling, build quality, weather proofing and EVF certainly shame the GH2.

Inside is the same sensor and image processor as the NEX 5N. When I first tried it out at the IFA in Berlin last year, I slated it because... A) The build quality was very suspect. HDMI socket had broke after a day on the demo model B) The control layout felt less intuitive than a DSLR, yet that was mostly what you were paying the significant extra money for C) The image didn't benefit from anything extra for your 3x more... That was pretty inexcusable. D) Didn't like the form factor... unnecessarily trad-video and very very plasticy I don't love the VG-20, but I do love the NEX 5N and 7. Best bang for buck along with the GH2 at the moment.

The in-body stabiliser is so good it takes the place of a rig sometimes. Even with a dirt cheap kit lens like the 40-150mm it performs better than the OIS on a $2000 Canon L lens. I'm not exaggerating. My review has been somewhat delayed because I got so immersed in shooting a project with it and I want both the footage and review to come out at the same time. Stay tuned.
