Sara is right about heat, it is the main reason there's no 60p on the D4 or 1Dx in 1080p mode, and the EPIC has a huge heat sink and cooling to deal with faster frame rates, and a huge crop on the sensor too. 1080/60p on a full frame sensor would only be possible with taking liberties with the image, line skipping, etc.
  9. I prefer Vanilla 44 patch to V1.1 HBR... 44Mbit sharper than HBR and it is native 24p. Remember that HBR is 30p inside interlaced wrapper unless you have a PAL GH2 when it is 25p inside 50i wrapper. Not compared my Intra 88 to Seaquake. Motion is better compared to Vanilla 44 but Intra is not good at long record times because it is an i-frame patch. Yes you can use ex-tele no problem. No hack for the GX1 yet. Similar to G3 in different body.

  12. Didn't pick up the Gitzo in the end, went for a Manfrotto. Didn't feel the Gizto had consistency of torque, it seemed a bit notchy. Shame because the design was great.
  13. Hand made and so well built! Don't think they can keep up with demand which is why the price has rocketed in some places. It is worth the money though, unique character... unique on the entire M43rd's system actually.

The image is slightly more compressed in 50p mode, but it is helpful for slow motion and you can indeed convert it easily to 25p and it'll give the same look - provided the shutter is not higher than 1/100, you will still get a natural motion blur on the 1080/50p footage. For fast action or handheld work you will get more of a break-up of the image in 50p mode though, because of the stress on the codec and the relatively low bitrate per-frame.

  18. Interesting to see the ISO 2500 test, GH2 clearly better in low light.
  19. If you are using a 2x anamorphic check out the EOSHD GH2 Patch Vault, each patch includes the MJPEG anamorphic patch for 2.66:1 direct out of the camera from 4:3 with a 2x lens. With a 1.33x or 1.5x lens you will be best off in AVCHD 1080p mode with the usual high bitrate hack. For monitoring, image is stretched on camera no matter what mode... I sometimes use an external monitor or EVF which does the stretch in real time while recording, sometimes don't bother.

  21. Primes also have a generally much faster aperture for less money. Better for low light, and they are generally sharper too.
  22. Leave the sequence setting at standard 1080p... (1920x1080) Just adjust the clip as in the book. Should be fine.
  23. OK secret is out, I'm going for the G2180 head, like Dan has. I have not laid a finger on one yet so going to try in store before I pick it up and review it on the blog. Did consider the 701HDV, it is a bit cheaper but not enough to justify the heavier weight and larger profile it has over the Gitzo. I am also picking up a levelling base which is as compact and as light as possible. Hi Sara - those are nice options but not compact or lightweight enough for what I am looking for, we're talking under 3kg for the tripod and head combined  8) whilst trying to keep it steady. Wish me luck!! ;D
  24. There are better alternatives around when it comes to the GH2, partly because of the expense and partly because the aperture on a Canon L / EF lens is electronically controlled. Canon FD, Contax Zeiss offer the best value, Leica R, Zeiss ZF (Nikon mount) and Voigtlander offer similar image quality to the Canon L range but with manual aperture control rings on the lens.
