It doesn't do anything for 720p or 1080i so I recommend to use it in 1080/24p cinema mode. Maximum clip length on highly detailed scenes will be around 1.5 minutes, then you'll need to hit record again. The higher the quality of video the faster you will reach the 4GB file size limit of the SD card standard.

Optimising the GH2 for ISO 12,800 - a video tutorial
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The Olympus is double the price of the Hyperprime. Of course, since it is 2x more expensive, obviously it is a more advanced lens - silently focussing, AF, very small, very light, very sharp, hardly any flare. It is a bit more clinical than the SLR Magic though. I like both. The SLR Magic is recommended for those who can't afford or justify the expense of the Olympus 12mm. I usually use my Hyperprime at F2 anyway, since the flare is c*r*a*z*y at F1.6 - sometimes, actually, I like it but many won't feel that way! -

Edit in Premiere CS5.5 on an AVC-Intra timeline for best workflow performance. Myth busting time! Yes the GH2 really can do clean, detailed ISO 12,800 in low light, and it is the best current DSLR for low light shooting, with an organic fine grain noise pattern like the Canon C300. How? It all depends on picture profiles, as EOSHD shows in this video tutorial. Read full article

On this day exactly 1 year ago EOSHD reported on a rare sighting – a 4K digital cinema camera with Nikon mount from JVC. This product has quietly matured into something nearing release with a rumoured launch date of April 2012 at NAB and a rumoured price said to be under $9,000. However since this is JVC we’re talking about, something is probably odd about it. Does this cut the mustard? Read full article
An alternative view from inside CES 2012 by Illya Friedman
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I am also wondering the same about 4K, and whether it is overkill for the home? Certainly is for internet video. The human retina can only resolve so much, hence the iPhone retina display pixel pitch being almost invisible at normal viewing distances. Considering you are sat considerably further from a TV than you are from a phone, do you really need such a fine pixel pitch on a 50 inch? I'd say not. -
Dispelling the myths, is the Canon C300 worth $15,999?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The article is really more about the GH2 and FS100 in a positive light than about the C300. Since from my perspective, working on my own projects, image quality, lenses and creativity are at the top of my priorities, whilst durability, convenience, pro workflows and broadcast safe codecs are right at the bottom of my list. Remember who EOSHD is aimed at and decide what is most important for these people, because I do get a bit tired of commercial filmmakers thinking that the only needs in the world are the professional ones! They are right for them and their work, but not for everyone. I am not working. I am creating. -
Agree, the 25 Nokton is one I use most often... Love it. Also look at Contax Zeiss 85mm F1.4... very nice.

Dispelling the myths, is the Canon C300 worth $15,999?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Haven't seen those yet, cheers Sara. Out of Tunes is finally a video that pushes the camera. Very challenging lighting, lots of movement, high contrast backdrops. The C300 didn't handle the highlights as well as I'd have expected. For the web and Vimeo any camera more expensive than a GH2 is really overkill. Nobody is going to notice the difference when it is streamed at 720p on Vimeo to a laptop screen. Though that is now the de-facto distribution method for video and one we all owe a lot too, so I am happy to see it thrive. Often distribution channels drive camera technology. I have no idea how 4K is going to do, when there isn't yet the distribution infrastructure ready to support it outside a few $30k displays for home theatre and some upgraded multiplex theatres. This will change quickly but 4K is set for a VERY slow start in my opinion. -
Dispelling the myths, is the Canon C300 worth $15,999?
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You are quite right Jimmy the DSLRs are Canon's FS100, it is just we haven't seen any yet. Existing ones too long in the tooth to compete now. Yes Sandro the usable area of Super 35mm is 21.95mm wide. -
Whilst I still prefer the small size and ‘tourist’ stealth factor of DSLRs for the kind of shooting I do, I can recognise why a great many want a Canon C300. The handling, EF mount, image quality and low light performance – as well as built in ND, audio monitoring and build quality are worth the money to many professionals. But actually there are some myths flying around about the C300 and the competition is far stronger sub $10,000, even sub $6,000 than people realise.
Pricing has been announced for the Canon C300. As expected it is $15,999. B&H are taking pre-orders for the PL mount version here and the EF mount C300 here. Both are the same price. Orders will ship 30th January. This is great news for NEX 5N and FS100 owners. Suddenly that limited range of E-mount lenses have been supplemented by the entire Canon EOS range! Metabones are set to release a fully electronic interface adapter for Canon EF lenses to Sony e-mount (NEX 5N, FS100). Unlike the bulky MTF adapter it has electronic communication between the Sony body and Canon lens itself so you can adjust aperture on the camera. It also supports IS and requires no external power. It is a myth it cannot compete with the FS100 or Canon C300. I am currently experimenting a lot with my GH2 and Nikon J1. I’ve seen some new opportunities with these… With the GH2 I am refunding my techniques for getting cinematic extreme low light at ISO 12,800 and F0.95. Due to the way CMOS sensors behave you are actually able to get a very film like ISO 800 grain over well exposed areas of an image and such is the F0.95 aperture on the Voigtlander Nokton and the high ISO, it is very easy to get an exposure in the dimmest of light. The noise is hideous in the lows and red / blue chroma channels, but you crush that noise out with a high contrast black and white picture profile and it solves the issue. Canon G1X video samples - DIGIC 5 - I'm not impressed
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
There are no full 1080p samples from the 1DX out there yet to my knowledge. That one is 540p and compressed for the web, can't be judged. The G1X files are straight from the card and can be judged. I am sure the 1DX will be better as it has DIGIC5+, but in case of DIGIC5 on 650D and even 5D Mark III, this doesn't bode well. Remember that all the DIGIC 4 cameras had similar video quality across the board. -
Nice image quality for Super 8. I see they will also have Super 16 and S35 models out. Any idea of release dates?
Don’t forget to download the original videos and view full screen The G1X is the first of Canon’s large sensor cameras to use their long awaited DIGIC 5 image processor. 3 years in the making, it largely determines how the sensor is downscaled to 1080p. It also determines resolution, bitrate, encoding and how much aliasing and moire is produced in the downscaling / pixel binning process. DIGIC 5 is built around a video core unlike the older DIGIC 4 and it largely determines whether Canon’s DSLRs in 2012 like the 5D Mark III, 1DX and 650D will be hit or miss because those too will all be DIGIC 5. So there is a strong possibility that the G1X is indicative of the image we will be getting from those. I certainly hope not… Today DPReview posted some direct from the G1X Quicktime clips in 1080/24p H.264 format. EOSHD has the analysis… Read full article
4K for £4K and why you probably shouldn't get a JVC HMQ10
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
This is virtually the same camera as the prototype shown at the 2011 CES and rumored to be projected to sell for about $2K ("Meet the prosumer camcorder which is 4K for $2K"). At that price it would have been a no-brainer.
Looks like the price went up! At that point $2k was just a rumour though. That it is $5k is not surprising. Wait until you see the prices of the first 50 inch 4K TVs. -

Panasonic talk hacking, committed to video on cutting edge GH3
Andrew Reid posted a topic in Cameras
Above: Panasonic GH2 with Zacuto EVF [review at EOSHD] and Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 (constant aperture) The GH2 is the only true hybrid video DSLR. Video on all other DSLRs is an add-on but on the GH2 it is a core feature. It is an approach Canon will eventually take with the 4K Cinema EOS DSLR in what is going to be a very exciting 2012 – hopefully it will have an EVF and you can pluck stills from the 4K video stream. But the GH2 is currently the trail blazer in video. To invest in gear, or creativity? It all comes down to risk
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You cannot expect a cinematographer to also write the script. I think most important thing is to first figure out what kind of filmmaker you are before you figure out which camera you like best.
