Live Q&A with Nikon reveals D4 video shortcomings
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hi Andrew The footage shot by Corey Rich and team "Why" looks awesome don't you think Cheers Paul
Nicely shot but very soft resolution... Could have been done on 5DMkII anyway. -
It will work better with AVC-Intra, and an i-frame recording is less demanding on CPU speed so you will get a smoother workflow with it as well. Nice to see the blacks hold up in your footage... My Mac has lost mine.

Interesting theory. You could well be right. Nice guessing. :P However do bear in mind that the G1X and 1DX are new product lines not continuation of old ones. The 1DX represents merging of 1DS and 1D so counts as a new product, and the G1X is a significant change from the G12 product line.
Canon will release a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in 2012. Japanese website DCWatch has the first interview where Canon have spoken in detail about the development of the new system. There’s so much in this interview. But the translation is very rough. So take my interpretation as just that for now – an interpretation. Note: I have also corrected some grammar in the translated quotes for easy reading. Is the clip and timeline playback set to full resolution? I've had issues with GH2 footage at half res. Click the icon near the monitors to change this.

Nikon D4 official specs leaked - analysis of new video features
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It is WAY too early to dump on it. Come on guys. There's no solid info out there yet and the sample videos are highly compressed. My gut feeling is that Expeed 3 will downscale in a similar way to Expeed 3 on the J1 mirrorless so won't be as detailed as it should be, but again... we just don't know for sure. -
You are right in wanting to invest in glass that can be used on full frame as well as the GH2, it is very versatile when it comes to lenses and almost anything works, but full frame lenses are future proof and sharper in the corners with less light fall off on the GH2. Go for a fast 35, 50 and 85. Contax Zeiss are nice on eBay, if you can find the 85mm F1.4 for a decent price £400-£500 grab it. If you need a cheaper one, unfortunately Canon FD is out but the Nikon 85mm F2 AIS is worth a look for £100-£150. For the 35mm obviously Samyang 35mm F1.4 springs to mind but there are cheaper alternatives like the Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm F2.4 in M42 mount which are just as sharp and half the price. Good 50's can be had at rock bottom prices. See the Olympus OM 50mm F1.4 and the ultra cheap Helios 44M-2 58mm in M42 mount. That Helios is a bargain (sub $50!!) and should be in everyone's bag. Lovely sharpness and cinematic flare. The Contax Zeiss 50mm F1.7 has better contrast and is £130.
http://www.vimeo.com/34698590 I came across this today which is really quite incredible. It is made by Patryk Kizny of DitoGear who create timelapse sliders with inspiration from Greg Downing at XREZ Studio (they developed the interactive GigaPixel panoramas). From a static timelapse shot a virtual camera movement can be created, which means the camera can move on a virtual path and the timelapse footage is used to texture a 3D model of the scene. Ignore most of them. Try Driftwood's. Try mine. Choose the one you like best. Simple.

Nikon D4 supports iPad as field monitor and remote
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
1Dx can read image data faster than D4 therefore less rolling shutter.
I don't see how we can know that for sure yet dude. Thanks for the videos mozes -
I suggest Cody does his own research here, for the best.
EOSHD takes a first look at the Nikon J1 If you are doing personal work as a lone artist the Nikon J1 might be of interest. Whilst many filmmakers quite reasonably would think of this thing as a toy, creatively it does have a purpose and there’s also some interesting technology in it. The J1 is the first outing of Nikon’s extremely fast Expeed 3 chip (a beefed up version of this appears in the new Nikon D4!) Nikon D4 official specs leaked - analysis of new video features
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sara is right about heat, it is the main reason there's no 60p on the D4 or 1Dx in 1080p mode, and the EPIC has a huge heat sink and cooling to deal with faster frame rates, and a huge crop on the sensor too. 1080/60p on a full frame sensor would only be possible with taking liberties with the image, line skipping, etc. -
I prefer Vanilla 44 patch to V1.1 HBR... 44Mbit sharper than HBR and it is native 24p. Remember that HBR is 30p inside interlaced wrapper unless you have a PAL GH2 when it is 25p inside 50i wrapper. Not compared my Intra 88 to Seaquake. Motion is better compared to Vanilla 44 but Intra is not good at long record times because it is an i-frame patch. Yes you can use ex-tele no problem. No hack for the GX1 yet. Similar to G3 in different body.

Same place as you Sara 8) I like it, will blog soon

Anyone here managed to sync two 600s or 5Ds for S3D work?
Andrew Reid replied to Karel Bata's topic in Cameras
Peter Chang showed me his work on Twitter. Although I don't think it represents a synced 3D video mode, they have managed it for time-lapse in stills mode on the 5D Mark II. DEUS EX HOMINE - San Francisco 3D Moco Time-lapse DEUS EX HOMINE - San Francisco 3D Moco Time-lapse Nice footage. You will need to click through to the YouTube one and change the 3D settings on the page to suit your glasses! -
The quest for a small, light, levelling video tripod and head
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Didn't pick up the Gitzo in the end, went for a Manfrotto. Didn't feel the Gizto had consistency of torque, it seemed a bit notchy. Shame because the design was great. -
Hand made and so well built! Don't think they can keep up with demand which is why the price has rocketed in some places. It is worth the money though, unique character... unique on the entire M43rd's system actually.

The image is slightly more compressed in 50p mode, but it is helpful for slow motion and you can indeed convert it easily to 25p and it'll give the same look - provided the shutter is not higher than 1/100, you will still get a natural motion blur on the 1080/50p footage. For fast action or handheld work you will get more of a break-up of the image in 50p mode though, because of the stress on the codec and the relatively low bitrate per-frame.
http://www.vimeo.com/34535367 This footage is using my Vanilla patch which is a steady 44Mbit for high reliability on the hacked Panasonic GH2. The title of the video is from a disturbing Cultural Revolution era poster showing a Red Guard crushing a Buddha and book with a hammer. “Destroy The Old World, Forge The New World” is the heading.
Once again the rumours were right and the no-show of Canon’s G12 successor has been explained by the appearance of a pro-compact with much larger 1.5 inch sensor and DIGIC 5. Rather than just cut and paste the press release like so many blogs do, I’ll take a deeper look at what this all means.
