Look I'm not going to get personal here. I don't know the guy in real life. At the 1:10 mark: "Let me be clear on something. There is way too much speculation going around about an issue that doesn't actually exist (yet)". Really?! No. It's not speculation. 100% factual. Canon official test timing info. At 1:23 he whines: "None of the press has had a production camera. All the cameras are pre-production" Perhaps he can explain then why Canon went to all that trouble testing the pre-production camera to calculate overheating times and releasing them publicly if the problem suddenly won't exist by the time the final firmware is ready? Canon did all the testing on the beta firmware camera. Same hardware as Peter McKinnon was given and likely exact same firmware version. It's two weeks from shipping, the beta firmware is basically the final one. The hardware is final. The thermal design is final. Jared just doesn't get it. But then the whiney voice really ratchets up a notch because one of his viewers dared pointing out a fact or two! The viewer said "stop ignoring the overheating". "What I am ignoring?" he responds! "The document that is floating around purportedly from Canon?" Purportedly... I get it... Discredit the facts. Discredit the source. Heaven forbid - Don't mention the original source EOSHD, during the time all other major sites were stone dead silent on it. I am not finishing for credit. But again it illustrates the sheer cheek of it. Clearly I or CVP don't deserve an ounce of his publicity or thanks for expanding his knowledge and breaking the news first to his audience? And when you do simply add up what Polin has said, it absolutely stinks. Gloss over the fact the timings are legitimate. Imply they aren't even final. Imply the overheating is "speculation". Imply there may be zero wrong with the final camera. Say how great a stills camera it is. Claim abject poverty and that the video you're watching puts no money in his account. Say the actual overheating timings may not even be real! And then to top it all off... "If it is real, Canon are really honest!" The sheer fucking cheek of it. His viewers commented that he's "getting his bank account lit up for these videos". And of course he denies it. "I'm not getting paid by Canon..." What he forgot to add was "...this time" This is a guy who has no problems sitting on a beach in Hawaii for the EOS R launch, hotel and flight paid for by Canon. Of course he is getting his bank account lit from the videos. They are monetised. And the gist of the last 5 minuets if you can get that far is... Canon are honest! I am honest too! Now watch these YT ads and click these links so I can get even richer. 160k views on the overheating controversy and of course not a single mention of his original sources for the info. Not even the CVP video let alone EOSHD. I don't envy these creators. I don't get any satisfaction from being handed cameras for free or going on press controlled junkets. I make a good living off EOSHD and don't feel the need to have 160k views on each video. But if people wonder why I'm not championing the American YouTube Circle Jerk and chomping at the bit to join in, well... Here is exhibit B, out of 10,000.

Going back all the way to the move to Berlin 10 years ago, I started off with the intention to do commercial work with eventually building up enough contacts and money to film my own stuff. I did a bit of that but EOSHD became my main income, which I now use to make my own stuff happen. Not as often as I'd like at the moment, because of how much time is taken up by EOSHD! This year I planned to do some short films at motorsports events like Le Mans, The British Grand Prix at Silverstone and film the Goodwood Festival of speed. But the pandemic has seen a lot of people in the same position as me. Everything cancelled!

Surely Canon M100 is not the best in class though? -
I moved on from the vignettes and mood pieces in Europe / UK because of the way the streets now look and the way people aren't so eccentric. I find there's less interest in the everyday. And sometimes people are downright hostile towards camera users due to personal privacy obsessions. I would like to do some again, but maybe in Japan or India.

@Neumann Films a Reddit style AMA is a great idea for the forum. I'll do my best to answer what you guys asked above. We should do this with you Neumann some time too, and some camera companies. I have some interviews coming up on the blog. Sigma's CEO Kazuto Yamaki and the Sigma Fp product manager got a book-length of questions from me and are very kindly working on some answers! Fujifilm also in Japan. I think the camera companies are always shrouded in mystery so the more they talk to their users, the better. We can send our suggestions their way! @Neumann Films What art form interests you the most outside of film? Also...what is your favorite CURRENT local restaurant (no chains)? Music. I like how you can choose to be a solo artist or be in a group. Filmmakers don't quite have the same luxury if we want to make really good stuff 🙂 We need actors, writers, at the very least an interesting model or subject to shoot. Musicians just pick up an instrument, and write music. Also writing, I think that's fascinating as well. Whether it be fiction or writing down ideas, I think filmmakers who can do this well have a real advantage over the pack. Favourite restaurant in Berlin is the Japanese BBQ "Ushido" and back home in the UK there's a great one in Manchester with a cocktail bar, called "Room". @Itu did you attend any film school? Which one? Not really but went to university and made artistic video pieces, music videos and some short films (in the Mini DV era)! @Video Hummus having run EOSHD solo for so many years where you have routinely written about your frustrations over and over again about the same persistence and repeated short comings of every brands cameras, would you consider yourself a masochist? If not, what kind of mental health problem would you say you have? Addicted to buying new cameras. It is interesting to follow the flow of technology and innovation but with the camera industry being so dominated by the Japanese, I feel it could benefit from more multi-cultural ideas and designers. It's becoming a bit like the Japanese car industry where all the different models are homogeneous. Well done to Sigma for trying something different with the Fp! @Mr. Freeze 1. What moment/film was your motivation to pick up a Camera to create films? Koyaanisqatsi. Never seen reality in such poetic form, and the synthesis with the Philip Glass score, just amazing. But what's inspiring is it's basically one cinematographer and a camera, long, long takes. Each one hypnotic. No actors, no big crew, no writers, just the music and images. Hitchcock, now there is an inspiration too. 2. Being able to travel back in time, let´s say 1920-2000, what decade/year would you like to visit and film in? I think late 70's, early 80's. The auteur era in the US. And 60's France. I've heard many of the younger pros say Jurassic Park is the "classic" that inspired them to be a filmmaker. It's great fun, but popcorn fluff... How times, and people are changing.

Big gap in score... Both gold medals. Identical score... Canon gets gold, and the clearly superior camera gets silver. How can anybody say the EOS M6 is more recommendable than the X-Pro3? Or that an M100 deserves a gold? Just Bizarre. -

DPReview used to be a great British camera info site. Really was great before the move to the US and Amazon. It started going downhill when they started to pad out the front page news feed with clickbait and sponsored content. And imagine how much better it would be with real photographers (as opposed to hipsters) as reviewers. I have never looked at one of Barney Britton's photos and felt anything. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K

The wide-angle selfie 30p IBIS autofocus shot is the new "video". I'd like to get back to cinema. So today I decided to do an experiment. Found a cheap Nikon D850 for 1500 euros. No IBIS. No AF. Going to use a tripod. Shocking!! Every time I have AF and IBIS I'm tempted to use it, and it really is inferior to a tripod and manual focus in terms of "cinematic". So much unmotivated camera movement out there and robotic focus. Nothing against it as a shot-getter, or for convenience sake but I am tiring of watching it. Floaty, artificial and "YouTubey". -

Surprisingly it is! If they keep this up I'll unban DPR links here. It's a bit like a country's border - if they open it to mine, I'll let theirs in. -
Canon EOS R5 overheating vs Panasonic S1H and Sigma Fp designs
Andrew Reid replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I completely agree. Canon thought the 8K and specs would outweigh the drawbacks of overheating problems. We'll see however if this harms the Canon brand image for reliability, and how many of the target pro customers (EOS R5 in particular) return the camera within a month because they can't get through shoots. It might end up being a non-issue, or it might end up hurting sales. By the sounds of McKinnon though he is having a lot of problems. We'll see. And yes at least they were transparent about it and made the recording time figures available. -

I could buy one its own plane ticket to the UK, have it accompanied by a minder in seat next to it, buy a fire extinguisher just to be safe and still save £500 on the shop retail price 🙂 -
Disappointed in the Canon R6 - Coming From A Canon User
Andrew Reid replied to herein2020's topic in Cameras
It's not even a campaign Simply about reporting the facts None of the major coverage initially mentioned any overheating issues. People were pre-ordering the camera under a false pretence. So I had to put the facts on the blog rather than have that info stay hidden in the CVP video. You seem to be suggesting that I should shut up? It's $3900 + tax. I expect it to do what a $3900 Panasonic S1H does - active cooling, 4K 10bit 422 unlimited record times. 6K or 8K is just a bonus. The RAW file sizes are unmanageable for longer record times so the overheating in that mode is only the secondary problem! Of course, you can produce lovely work with the EOS R5. It's will just be a shame about the moment on that shoot where great stuff is being captured up to the point where NOTHING is being captured because the camera got too warm. -

Calm down gt3rs please. The forum has just about become tranquil again after I removed the troublemakers. Don't become the next. Nice perspective. Yes there are two sides to the coin On the one hand Canon pushed the envelope and finally gave us the specs we wanted. On the other hand I wanted a reliable camera too, and there's no excuse for not putting a proper heat sink in there - it is a bit like Intel shipping their most powerful flagship CPU without one. https://www.eoshd.com/news/heat-management-what-canon-can-learn-from-the-panasonic-s1h-and-sigma-fp/ The Sigma Fp and Panasonic S1H lead the way in that and show what's possible. So a major oversight from Canon there. I think there will be a fair bit of denial until the camera actually gives up during a shoot, then people will reconsider how practical it is to use. We have to test it for ourselves at the end of the day. If I can shoot a bunch of takes in the highest quality 4K modes no longer than 5 minutes each and keep going one after the other without heat build-up, I may like the camera more than I do at the moment! I think it's worth waiting to see what the Sony A7S III is going to be like as well. So I may not jump on a pre-order with the EOS R5. Besides as @BTM_Pix pointed out the other day, it is about £1000 cheaper in Japan so may as well go there on holiday for one than pre-order in the UK. -

Smartphone can process the same amount of pixels (8K) and encode to same codec for $700 Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro -
The last one where we had to find the best camera under $200 was a hoot Best technical image was the 4K GX85 but the videos also had various levels of ingenuity and creativity. I am open for ideas for that the next challenge could be 🙂 Best low light camera for under $500? Most cinematic look for $300? (Regardless of resolution) Music video shot with one prime challenge? Let's settle on a theme and see if we can get the next one going.

Canon want you to buy the EOS R5 for that Canon want you to buy the C200 for that Canon want you to buy the C500 II for that and all the rest, really is the last step up, promise. Have you considered the 1D X Mark III? -

Client doesn't care if you miss an entire shot because the camera has steam coming out the card door? -
Yes I probably will enjoy it for that but I have to think not just about myself when I write advice and commentary in blog posts - there are a lot of people who need the longer recording times and predictable reliability, like I described for the shooting situations in the recent post. As for ergonomics I don't feel particularly inspired by the EOS R5 looking at the design, finish or materials, but it does seem to have a decent control layout. Sony are not too bad now though - the A7R IV was a good step in the right direction and they just need to sort the menus out now.

Suuuure. Canon 1D X II has 4K60. Doesn't overheat.
