It was probably me asking questions previously.. and it is because I use my GH cameras in non standard ways. I do use 24p with short shutter and this produces interesting smeared footage, but I was speculating on possible new ways that Panasonic could open up the GH6 (with better processing) to more experimental ways of capturing slow footage with less of the blur that the 24p very slow shutter footage currently produces. I understand that most users won't be interested in the more experimental side of shooting, but for my own use, this feature is about recording possible live music events with cameras shooting at different frame rates, I am interested in capturing the physical movements of the artist live and to be able stream this live with movement captured in slow motion being part of the live stream, or as part of an art installation where event timings are part of the constraints (so editing footage might not be possible). Maybe if additional options were available it might open some creative doors that you were not expecting to use. Then again maybe not. I am just interesting in new ways to use any camera, and I thought slow motion streaming might be useful for others too 🙂

The thought was is the processing on the camera could create a stream of frames at the time of shooting, for example: Shooting at 96fps for 24fps footage, the camera binning frames and recording / monitoring without a buffer. Camera monitors and records frames 1, 5, 9, 13..... Dropping frames 2,3,4,6,7,8,10,11,12,14,15,16 There would be some motion blur to consider but you would always be binning frames so there would be some time in between frames for that to be processed. @Mmmbeats does raise an interesting question about getting ones head around the visuals that are not real time, but imagine that you could control the flow of frames (time) using the joystick on the back of the camera or something similar.

I understand this is not usual, but you would be monitoring the slow motion on the camera.

I have been thinking about the increased processing, and the possibility of processing the video frames in camera. Slow motion footage consists of monitoring frames at 24fps (for simplicity) when shot at a faster rate, if Panasonic (with their pixel binning experience) could drop frames but still produce a slow motion stream that could be monitored, streamed and maybe also recorded on an external ssd. Not sure if it's possible, but it would be a very impressive feature to monitor in slow motion, and open up some interesting creative potential 🙂

Just down to processing I imagine, like pixel binning, just with frames at a guess.

Has there been a hybrid camera that could monitor slow motion in slow motion before? That could open the door for streaming slow too maybe?

A GH6 is good news, I agree with others that the full Vlog colour science needs to be in this. I would also like to see some much higher frame rates for 1080 even if this means time limitations. If this can do 4K 120 on a smaller sensor hopefully Panasonic could look into some form of HDR for 24 fps? Braw or similar should be implemented, to get around RED's crippling grip on compressed RAW, I don't want external RAW. With so many competitors in the full frame market I would like to see Panasonic explore the m43 format and with the use of higher powered processing, they could give the GH6 some unique stand out features like computational photography and AI features, high res, panoramic, false colour and maybe some temporal effects like slit scan or more interesting app base processing. Phones have opened the way for non-photographers to explore app based processing and Panasonic could tap into the future potential with additional apps developed over time and open up a wide market for those wishing to take their phone photography into a stand alone creative imaging device on top of the already outstanding GH platform. Come on Panasonic "Speculate to accumulate" I am happy at the prospect of GH6.

The forum seems like it is a good place to discuss more general stuff. So.. I held off on the follow focus and other add on's so far, but thinking now about which bits to pick up. Would appreciate any recommendations 🙂 I have been looking at the Tilta Nano and focus wheel, but remember some discussion about an additional cable for powering the Nano to get more torque, or maybe I need the bigger motor to work with manual primes which include the Voigtlander primes which might be tricky for the Nano? I believe I will also need some focus rings for the Voigtlanders so any recommendations for starting to buy these so they will work long term alongside other prime sets would be very helpful as I would rather get it right and buy these only once, thanks 🙂

These two pieces of software can do similar things but they really are quite different. Studio Artist is really just focussed on 2D effects like those seen in the video above, and these effects are some of the most interesting "natural looking" motion effects I have come across using affordable and quite flexible software. AE (aftereffects) has a lot more to offer alongside producing these type of effects, which makes the two difficult to compare. You are correct the range of things AE can do makes it quite complex, but that also means it can be deep and get you to places that other people can't recreate very easily if you are wanting to produce work that communicates using your own "voice". The original video you posted seems to have been made using a range of analogue and digital techniques, and the techniques used in the video are used alongside the imagery to help to communicate the artist's / filmmaker's message. I don't know your intentions with the films you want to produce. But would recommend you test out different ways of communicating the things you want to say, this will show you the direction of the tools you will need. The main reason for recommending Studio Artist was that it has a free demo which allows you to explore and see if it's useful before investing, you want to find tools that provide the flexibility to help you to tell your message. AE should also have a demo period although I think Adobe don't give you much time to see if it fits the needs of an experimental animator. I would also recommend doing some searches for "experimental" work on Vimeo / Ubuweb to find a range of work and artists you like, as these will help you find your own voice by giving you lots of techniques to try out 🙂

PS. I am not affiliated in any way with Synthetik Studio Artist, but bought a few licences of the software for some of my students to use to explore with during a video project a while back.

An example from Studio Artist, all of the effects work on both stills and video, some of the effects recreate "natural media" like paint, it can be very flexible working with different effects on separate layers, like most software it needs exploration to find what works for you 🙂

After Effects can be fun to explore once you understand the workflow, and the workflow is covered in a lot of Youtube videos so don't be too worried about a steep learning curve. Also take a look at Synthetik Studio Artist they have a demo that would allow some exploration, it's an endless demo that uses a watermark so at least you could check out if it's useful for you, good luck.

This looks great, appreciate the work that has gone into the development, does the module have to be positioned in a particular orientation? could it be positioned in portrait, upside down or under the lens or even hand held?

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed at the time.. Maybe Panasonic could still add it? 🤞

The GH5 didn't get the high-res mode update unfortunately, not sure if this was a hardware limitation but it would have been a nice addition as the G9 had a lot of updates from the GH line.

Looking on ebay (completed listings) there seem to be quite a few GH4's going for around the $350 mark, If you have settled on the GH3 it was an ok camera, but the GH4 was a great improvement to the GH line, the addition of 4K and especially the 96fps for me was a big improvement over the quite restricted GH3 🙂 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_fosrp=1&_nkw=panasonic+gh4&_sop=15 Alternatively the g85 has ibis and might be worth a look, a lot of people swear by them.

To me this sounds like good news, BM are developing sensor tech that will likely be available in other cams down the line at different price points 🙂

I do see quite a subtle pattern looking closer.. Was looking at the video projected and it wasn't that noticeable (hence the reply) the addition of some grain has helped when I've seen this in the past.. and lowering the local contrast would also help with the white and blue verticals. The Tiffen ultra contrast filters help but that direction is quite subjective. Maybe Panasonic can fix it with a firmware update..? ?

Hope Panasonic gives us some variable frame rate options for anamorphic shooting.. Maybe also some higher frame rate 4K options with cropped readout al la P4K. The possibility of better mapping of the V-Log L curve would also be appreciated @Amazeballs on VLC player I'm not seeing any tearing here.
