Hey Javier, I'm looking for nice locations to shoot. I've been going all over lower Manhattan just shooting all kinds of stuff. Plus it'd be nice to talk to someone who knows Anamorphics. Most everyone is just Blackmagic or Canon LOL... I'll send you a PM!

https://vimeo.com/77332920 This video is really three parts - lens test (taking and anamorphic), people in shots and atmosphere on location. BTW the set is for the TV show "Person of Interest". Sorry no music on this one.

Wow so they are copying Letus for 3 different focal lengths, copying Panasonic's LA7200 down to a T even with the damn smearing on the edges of the frame. Just amazing what's going on. And will it be even cheaper quality plastic? Maybe plastic lenses too? Give it to the Chinese they sure know how to copy things...

I really like these tests. Unfortunately it clearly shows they took the Panasonic LA7200 design. I definitely think it's a 2 element design, with the "close focusing" just a movement of the back element as shown in video 1. The other problems are that it shows the lack of sharpness which means the need for diopters just like the LA7200. Also that it can't focus past 135mm, same thing. The good thing is that it seems very sharp at the edges especially at wide angles. No smearing like the LA7200. I do like the housing design although it's large and means it can't be handheld. But maybe a small rig will help, and it will also help with lens changes rather than screwing it directly to the taking lens. I wish that it would flare more, but he did say it was the MC version. I wish he would test with an older lens like an old Nikon AI or something. The street night shot at the end of video 3 would have been great with just a bit of flaring. Overall this looks very good. I think just the rehousing of the lens with rails holder is enough to justify the cost. However having 2-3 or more of these for different focal lengths isn't right. It should just be one single design that has different settings for different focal lengths. But even with these different focal lengths, it clearly shows that a diopter is needed anyway which kind of defeats the purpose. I really hope that Letus can make good on this because it has a lot of potential. But with SLR Magic showing a single unit that's much more compact and just as sharp, I wonder how successful they will be. I do love the beefed up design with the rails mount though.

Any chance they're going to NYC? I'm going to be there by the end of the month, I'd love to try this on my 5DmkIII! -

If you get boosted ovals on your DSO lenses I'm up to buying one! A boosted Trump w/ this SLR Magic could be the trick! Can't wait to see a wide option for the Trump as well since there's little to no wide options for FF 5DmkIIIs. -

I'm up for that letus vs SLR Magic vs Centry vs LA7200 test! In reality though (like all things) price does make a difference. And I really want to get rid of my junky LA7200... -
Is there info on this demo video? Taking lens, f-stop, etc? And it looks fine don't get me wrong, but again I'm not that impressed. Letus has a great reputation of course, and I'm sure their price is justified. But it is THAT much better than SLR Magic's lens? From the video I can't say. And unfortunately for us price does make a difference. Otherwise I'll just buy that Iscorama for sale and be done with this...

At least there's no smearing on the edges. But no flares either, and not enough of a "anamorphic" look just like Silvertonesx24 said. I also wonder what taking lens they used too. In any case, it might be way overpriced especially if SLR Magic outperforms it.

I'm up for replacing my LA7200. Damn thing is plastic, the knubs inside holding the front element broke so the element shifts and moves all the time, the rear aligning thread is near stripped, etc etc. That's not even talking about the optical quality. Even if it performs almost the same, I'll spend as much for a NEW optic rather than one with plastic housing. I just wish the CINE prime was 17mm for MFT rather than 35mm, unless it's 35mm for Canon EF mount. The one thing I am worried about is the need for diopters, I thought there was a close focus switch? At least the front is round, I was using tape to hold diopters on my LA7200. Yes I dropped a bunch already (none cracked thankfully). -
I love the flares from the overhead orange light. Damn it looks ace! The flashlight looks like a perpendicular CCD sensor flare. Although I love how it looks once the flashlight is direct into the lens. Keep it up, I definitely will be ordering a 35mm and 58mm when it's finalized!

You might still be able to recover it by doing what Axel says: record another 1-2 second clip. This can be done even if you take the SD card out of the camera. It's Panasonic's internal referencing, and it gets confused with long spanned clips. So try it, then try copying the SD card to your Mac again, and it should clear up.

I understand your concern about ergonomics. I bought a rig from Edelkrone, not cheap but it works. They have a handstrap too. Although no electronics on it, still might be good for you: http://www.edelkrone.com/hand-strap/ Even a shoulder rig is hard to film for hours on end. But yeah, the basic DSLR shape isn't meant for long hours of shooting.

I've gotten 3 hours of continuous shooting on one battery for my GH3. Other than that, yes it can go for 4-5 hours if you pause between takes. I bought 2 extra batteries and rarely change batteries during a shoot. This is a stark contrast to the GH2 where batteries maybe last 1 hour 30min if you're lucky. Compare that with the BMPCC at 20-30min per battery and I'd be having a fucking fit! Definitely need an external battery for that. I'm glad you let us in on your experiences Olly. I'll be looking forward to version 2 of the camera in 2015.......

I like the Novoflex it's built like a tank. But the cost is just way too much. I have a cheapo Chinese made one too and it works just fine. If you don't care about the stepless aperture (since most AIS are manual aperture anyway) then I would skip it. If you have the Metabones, even better you don't need it. But if you want a guaranteed working/fitting adapter, then Novoflex is the best. But at 300x times the cost, that's up to you to determine if it's worth it. By the way, you make the manual aperture on the lens at F22, then you use the aperture ring on the Novoflex to open/close the aperture. It is as smooth as the aperture on your lens, no steps no clicks. I haven't had any problems with F1.2 or F1.4, but of course manual focusing is another matter entirely.

I use my GH3 all the time. But I have GH2's so I'm used to the interface. I think the GH3 is much easier to use and setup. And no worries about hacks, freezes or crashes! I love my GH3! I just wish it was 10-12bit recording or had RAW. But the 60P for slow motion is just awesome, I really love this little camera.

TrueSense Imaging (ex-Kodak) reveal 4K Micro Four Thirds sized CMOS sensor
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'm all for 10bit recording as well. Doesn't matter if is 4K, regular 1080P60P is fine, but let's get 10-12bit recording please. -
The only reason I'm using my 5DmkIII is because of the RAW hack. I can actually shoot 3:2 at 1920x1280 and have a 1:2.66 ratio, although I crop it to 1:2.40. If we could get true 3:2 or 4:3 shooting with the GH3 I'd use it more often. But having to crop a 2x lens on a GH3 means a lot of the frame cut off and also loss of resolution. Not necessarily a bad thing, but still I'd like to use the whole frame. I just wish Blackmagic or Panasonic would just let us make custom frame sizes so we can shoot anamorphic. The ML hack is the closest we can get to doing that. I'll look at Dog Schict Optics (sp?) and their custom Helios for the oval iris, and maybe the Vid-Atlantic streak filters? I forget which ones have the filters for oval stretch bokeh. I wonder if that would help with wide shots, then that would make 5DmkIII footage match with GH3 and 2x Sankors.

OK thanks this is good insight. I like the idea of using NDs for wide shots using spherical. I just wish I could get a true anamorphic wide lens like the 20mm Panavision used in the remake of Total Recall (of course they said only 1 exists in the world). But I guess I'm dreaming... In that case it's all in the planning and how to make the look of the film work. I've been using my LA7200 for the wides, but at times it just looks like regular spherical shots especially with the wide depth of field at F8 (most of the time). I'll try your suggestions and see how I can edit it.

Introducing the SLR Magic anamorphic lens - hands on with new V3 prototype
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I want to buy this NOW! :-) Can't wait to see the footage! -
@BurnetRhoades what's your opinion on mixing anamorphics? I need to use the LA7200 for wides since I can only use an 85mm on my 5DmkIII (still vignettes on Sankor). I can get 28mm wide with the LA7200, but I have to stop down to F5.6, more like F8 or F11 though. Impossible to use well at night with those F stops. Ideally I could use the new anamorphics and still get that look but with F2, that would be amazing. Anyway, I don't want to get rid of my Sankor just yet, it does produce a lovely image especially for closeups with a diopter. But the difference in image (1.33x vs 2x) is very noticeable...
