  1. Unfortunately I looked at the image they posted (the truck) and it still has problems on the edges, left and right.  I wonder if they just figured rehousing the LA7200 glass is enough.  I figure it's easy enough to replicate the shape of the glass, and considering it looks to be the same size, I guess the same problems persist.  At least the glass from SLR Magic doesn't seem to have this.  I wonder if a shootout is in order here - LA7200 x Century Optics x SLR Magic x Letus35!!!
  2. The beauty of this is that we get to use wide lenses on a 5DmkIII which is what I really struggle with right now.  My LA7200 is just so soft at the edges and focusing is crap.  I just hope that it isn't 5 models for $1700 EACH, although I'm afraid that's what it will be.   I'm really looking forward to this, I just hope they work on the coating so that we get real nice flares!  :-)
  3. Probably because your lens is not multi-coated?  This is avoidable if you have a modern multi-coated lens.  Nothing with the FD adapter at all.  Try another lens, if you use a Panasonic kit lens you won't see any of this at all.
  4. It just goes to show how much the lens makes the image.  It is 30P, but the image is fantastic.  Great bokeh, I really like it.  Not quite full-frame, but doesn't look m43 either.  I really look forward to this lens!   BTW I really like the car shots out the window, looking really smooth.  I hope Olympus puts in a great video codec with their new EM-1.  That and the IBIS would just do wonders for video.  I also liked the cafe scene with the girls, must have been a lot of fun!
  5. I don't have Andrew's guide, but if you have the latest build it says the recommended card speed.  So pick your aspect ratio, then resolution, and on the bottom of the screen it'll say recommended write speed plus how many frames you can capture.  It's also an estimation based on the last time you recorded at that aspect ratio/resolution.    You should also try recording a few clips first and let the card warm up.  A lot of times writing for the first 2 min or so will be slow and in the 80-something range.  But after that it will go up to 90+ range.  This is common for all manufacturers, even my expensive Lexars do this too.  So not everything is revealed in the tests.   Last resort exchange the card.  It's a pain in the ass I know, but now I have a working card that does 104 MB/s.  Well worth all the effort.
  6. Sorry I thought it was you.  But yeah I have to use F5.6 without a diopter to get focus.  If I use a 0.5 diopter I get maybe another stop at F4.  This is for most lenses, I think the russian lenses are worse and have to be F8.  Helios is OK at F4-F5.6.  This is for sharpness overall although the edges never really get sharp.  That's why I look at this new one and I think it looks good edge to edge.  Being able to focus at F2.8 is another bonus.
  7. If you don't like it return it.  I returned 5 of their cards before getting one that actually worked.
  8. You know the beginning of this video has blooming lights, right above the escalator, although they are more like rectangles with rounded corners because of the florescents.  You can see it at 2:35 with the blinking lights too.  The question is can you "plan" for this?  I don't think so.  And you can't fix it either.  I think it's good that they aren't rolling a ton of these out, but it's funny how none of this showed up with Brawley's videos.  It's best to just wait for version 2 or 3 before buying this camera.
  9.     Wish I bought that Century Optics from you.  I can't really get that with my LA7200, maybe it's because I use it for wides rather than closeups.  I have all ranges of diopters too but the LA7200 needs small apertures of at least F5.6 killing any low-light possibilities really.  Well I hope the SLR Magic lens works out well because I'm interested.  I'll wait for the final production version though.
  10. You want to see nasty blob effect?  Check out Emm's video at 00:53 (water):   https://vimeo.com/72675168   As nice as the image might seem, it sure looks like the highlights clip way too fast.  And those blobbies are just the worst.  I'm happy that I won't be a first adopter on this.  I'll wait till 2015 for them to sort out their sensor issues.  Maybe we'll get RAW too?  How about formatting/erasing cards in-camera?  Better battery life?  Yeah I think I'll wait and see.
  11. The flares are distracting.  I too hope to see what the final coating will be.  And I wish there was a 2x wide option out there to get real oval bokeh.  It sucks to be stuck with 85mm on a 5DmkIII as the widest option (and still vignettes!).
  12. Model Kyllie music video shot with Canon 5DmkIII RAW and Panasonic GH3. This is my first foray into shooting a music video with slow motion in mind. I also wanted to shoot with Anamorphic lenses and use a Steadicam for movement.  Learned a lot from this shoot, I hope to make the next one much better.   https://vimeo.com/72950991
  13. Testing out my recently acquired lenses with my Canon 5DmkIII using RAW.  The ability to record 3:2 as 1920x1280 is really great, but there is still a very limited ability to shoot wide with 2x Anamorphic lenses, in this case my Sankor 16D.  I have a Panasonic LA7200, but it's only a 1.33x stretch and doesn't get me the nice oval bokehs and stretched OOF areas that I want.  I really wish there was some kind of wide option using a 2x Anamorphic lens.  I also tested 1920x1280 versus 1920x1080 to see the difference.   https://vimeo.com/72941440   https://vimeo.com/72941441
  14. I use the stretch in the SmallHD DP6 too.  But the Canon output is just too small and I can't frame things well.  But the killer is that it doesn't work for 1920x1280 output.  I get continuous recording at 1920x1280 with my KomputerBay 64GB 1000x cards, about 104MB/s.  Of course I had to return 5 of them to even get a working card.  I swear I'm so over KomputerBay it's ridiculous...
  15. I can do HDMI with 1920x1080, but not with 1920x1280.  I can't even record, it just ends with 40 something frames only.  HACKED mode is worse, I get totally corrupted frames.  I haven't tried any other resolutions, but I think anything over 1080 just doesn't work.   I've also tried to change the display on my SmallHD to stretch the image but the output on HDMI is already small.  I wish Canon would just output the feed like the GH2/3.  It's so easy to do anamorphic on those cameras.
  16. I like the look of the movie too.  However there are times where the shallow DOF is just distracting.  I think it works for dialogue like the bar scene.  But some of the daytime outdoor scenes just look odd.  I think there's a time and place for it, but I'm not so sure it works in this film.  I thought some of the camera placement was interesting.  The camera on the door (when Brad gets out and slams it) was odd to say the least.  Also it must have been a real bitch to rack focus.  There are so many scenes that are just slightly off and I just can't imagine how the 1st AD must have felt.
  17. There's stuttering on all of the pans.  I do think it's because it was shot 24P with a high shutterspeed.  Might look good in the original file, but on YT it stutters so much it's just terrible.  And it's not to the music.   I think it looks good and you can get great shots, but for movement there has to be a way to smooth it out some more.  True 60P or greater might do the trick.
  18. Is it me or is there a strange cadence to it?  Maybe they should have shot it at 60P or they shot it at too fast a shutter speed?  Looks good but pans are distracting.
  19. In a way you are right.  But it's like shooting test charts, clinical and boring.  Sure it's important, but for most of us, we want to see real world footage.  I think the footage that AaronChicago linked is much better showing people talking, moving, walking, etc.  That footage is much better than just static stuff.  Again, if grading is all that matters then John's footage is fine.  But I'd like to see how it looks in the real world.   Edit: I'm not into "big budget" promos either though.  In that I think you're right as well.  But I'm not asking for that.  Just real world footage.  The footage from Auckland is much better and I'm going to work with it later to see how much I can get out of it.  Thanks to AaronChicago for posting the link.
  20. I'm not attacking you or John really.  I'm glad that he has released clips, whether it be the BMCC or BMPC.  My point is that I'm on the fence for cameras and I'm not wanting.  I have a GH3 and a Canon 5DmkIII.  Do I need to get a BMPC?  No.  Do I want to get one? Sure.  Like any tests, they help me make up my mind on what to buy.  Pure and simple.  Did I go buy a D4 last year because of Nikon's slick marketing?  No.  I'm just saying that there are a lot of choices, and this made it even easier for me to decide that I don't need or want the BMPC right now.  Maybe version 2, but so far from what I've seen I don't have any desire to have it anymore.  Especially if it doesn't have RAW from the start.  As for the clips, do they really stress the camera?  The codec?  Does static shots really do this?  I guess if grading is your thing well then there you go.  I for one shoot things in motion, so I'd like to see more of that.  Because these test clips are really just for grading.  I'm sorry but I like to do more shooting and less grading.  Right now the GH3 is the camera I need and use.  The BMPC well maybe next year, maybe never.
  21. Love the field shots and all the sunset shots.  Great feel this could have been a trailer for a movie.  Really great look.
  22. This could be a bunch of stills, except for a few movement shots.  Really?  Why even release these clips?  I guess their marketing consists of boring and uninteresting.  Anyone remember the D4 promo?  As much money as they spent at least it got people interested.  I'm cancelling my pre-order right now.
  23. I'm not going to criticize you Christopher, but anything that is a hack or similar needs a lot of research.  I would NEVER use this hack before I seriously tested it out.  Even with new equipment, it always is a good idea to test everything out.  This hack has many things you need to be aware of, and if you screw up anywhere it could mean loss of data.  I'd cringe at thinking I could read a book and then do a shoot the next day.  Just won't work.  Take the time to use the camera and gear first, and then understand the post process so you don't screw things up and make it more work.  I think too many people think it's plug-and-play, but this is far from it.  Maybe in a few months when they've ironed things out.  However, I would seriously consider testing everything before doing anything serious with it.  Good luck with your shoot.
  24. I gotta agree with Andrew's notes.  It's hard to work with RAW.  Much easier now, I hope that it will be much improved in the months to come. I think the look is great, and he has a point about color.  The immediate improvement over H.264 is just the richness of color.  But you can't be shooting RAW for everything.  It just takes too much work and too much space.  Either way, he shot a nice short and it sure made my skin crawl....
