Music video for the teen group EMKE. Shot over the weekend, my first time using a RAW workflow. I was totally unprepared for the amount of post work, but in the end the quality of the picture, both resolution and color, is outstanding! Thanks again to the Magic Lantern Team for making it all possible! And thanks Andrew for making the Vimeo group, please add this video to the it. https://vimeo.com/66681135

BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You do have a good argument, but you're only looking at the 5D. Did you know they are hacking all the rebels too? 550D, 600D, 50D, 60D? Those are easily less than a $1000 used. It's still early days but there's room for a lot of improvements. I think all these cameras will be shooting consistent RAW soon enough. And that'll give you more than enough options for under a $1000. EDIT: My mistake that was just a regular video. There are videos being posted using ML RAW for the 550D and 600D -
Canon 1D C vs 5D Mark III Raw (and C300 / GH2 resolution comparison)
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
They enabled the bad pixel filtering, that processes and reduces any dead pixels on the sensor. So this helps the image and has removed the vertical lines from earlier builds. The Fixed Pattern Noise however is the sensor noise and that has yet to be worked on. -
Canon 1D C vs 5D Mark III Raw (and C300 / GH2 resolution comparison)

The latest May 22 build doesn't have this anymore. Pattern noise is still there, though, if you lift the shadows up too much. -

BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sorry. I just haven't had much luck with Vimeo. I don't have a PLUS account, wondering if it'll improve the quality of my vids. I uploaded these to the regular Vimeo account and they came out as 480P? WTH? I thought Vimeo downsized 1080P to 720P, but they don't even show up as HD. Not really happy about the quality on YT either. I wish there was a better way to showcase these videos. -
This is the thread for raw2dng for Mac. But it can't process files larger than 2GB. http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5508.0

@ Paul - did you enable the RAW recording in the menu? After you load the module, go back to the video tab and RAW recording is on the bottom. It has to have a green indicator next to it for it to be enabled. Press the SET button to toggle it. Press the Q (quick) button to get into the options (like resolution). Then press the trash can button to get back to live view. When in live view, you press the start/stop as if you were recording regular video. I hope this helps.

Test of the 5x Zoom mode: Unfortunately YT compression is really bad. In the RAW I can read the names of the boats. -

I was actually trying to test out my CF cards yesterday. On my Transcend 64GB 1000x card, on the May 17th build I couldn't get past 78.1 MBs so I got dropped frames at 1920x1080. I went back to the original May12th build and I could again record 1920x1080 at 81 MBs with no dropped frames. However a funny thing happened. After looking at my video files, I found out that I was recording BOTH H.264 internal and RAW to the CF card. I guess with the May 12th build, you have to go into the menu to start recording. I must have forgotten that the start/stop button didn't start RAW, but I hit it and the H.264 started. My H.264 clip is actually something like 5min long, but I started and stopped RAW recording from within the menu. So I have exact matching video files of H.264 and RAW. I have them in my video, and I also graded the H.264 to see the differences. The RAW recording is choppy, probably because of dropped frames and recording both types of files. Not sure you can see the difference with the severe YT compression, but check it out for yourself: -

I always had this feeling that PB was about being the pioneer and that he had exclusive access to equipment. That was his calling. Look at how he went on and on about his Epic, and that was more Alpha stage than ML's hack right now! Why not embrace this? No he put so much into the 1DC how it was the next best thing! Now he looks the fool. Well that's his pride and it's biting him again. He and his "bloomites" can all just eat it now. ML is amazing! He needs to pack it up, his roadshow is done. -
The impact of 5D Mark III raw and what does Vincent Laforet think of it?
nahua replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I was one of the first people to be worried about heat. But then again, I haven't shot video on my mkIII since I got my GH3 in December last year. I just shot surfing over 3 hours in the hot bright sun with my 5dmkIII and it's just fine. I think all the concerns over heat are much ado about nothing. And we also have a tank of a camera - weather sealed with excellent lenses to boot. I'm loving this! -
If you have a new build you press the start/stop button like normal video. Enable RAW recording in ML menu first though.

I have an old Mac Tower 4 core CPU. About 15 min for 30 seconds of 1920x1080 footage

All the improvements are really good. I wish the B/W playback could be paused or quit, hard to watch those frames at maybe 5fps? And for the entire duration of the recording? But I'm asking too much. There's so much changing so quickly and the improvements are astounding. I still can't get 1080P w/o dropped frames but I know they're doing their best to improve it. This is really awesome!!! :-)

OK I finally got it. Not the directory has to have _ for spaces, but the volume name. I'm using all different external HDD and they all have spaces for the names. So I changed them and now it works. Thanks Andrew so much easier now!!! :-)

This is awesome. Great look and editing. Goes to show you can shoot within the current limitations and produce an awesome piece! -
I run Parallels and Win7. Then I just run it from the command line. Crude but it works for now. I wish knew what was wrong with the Mac version.
-
I get this error too, on Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion. I don't know what is wrong with it even though others say they have no problems. I have to go the Win7 route and it takes a lot longer...

My camera gets warm and the CF card is warm too. Getting me worried since this is my main camera for stills. I haven't had it get warm before when recording H.264 files. I'm trying it out but I'm always checking to make sure it doesn't melt down on me... -

It produces a file M000000*.RAW, a single file. Then you use raw2dng.exe to convert it into still DNG frames, in the hundreds or thousands. Very crude at this point but it works. I'm following Andrew and using After Effects to compile them all into a timeline and then rendering into ProRes 422HQ for edit in Premiere Pro. -
Check out Lorenco's post here for a compiled BIN halfway down the page: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5247.300 I too would like to get this to work. But my CF card is too slow and I get dropped frames. But the other problem is what lenses with my anamorphics? I wish I kept a bunch of my old Nikon F lenses with 52mm fronts. Would have fit my Sankor better than my L lenses...
