  1. @HappyCatFilms I didn't think there was any mode switch. The port on the side is for micro USB power, and the rocker switch is a manual control of the aperture iris with the micro USB connected. Also there's no AF control of EF lenses, unlike the Sony version of the speedbooster. I don't think any of the speedboosters come with a manual unfortunately.
  2. This is a short explanation about the Photo modes by Luke Neumann: BTW - anyone like what he's doing with 1:1 mode to 16:9? I just don't like the 16:9 2x anamorphic look for some reason. Or maybe he just shot it different? I'm always used to 2.35 or 2.66 anamorphic look.
  3. Each photo mode crops the sensor. It's based off the multi-aspect ratios from the photo modes. You can check in the manual for the photo modes used. So the full sensor is 3:2 I believe, since it takes up the entire screen. 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 all crop the sensor in some ways and are displayed on the LCD with grey areas on the sides/top & bottom. I hope this helps.
  4. I agree with Vesku. I've had over 150mbits at times, but you really need the best Sandisk SDXC cards otherwise you will get write errors. But yeah, it can vary from under 50mbits to 150mbits, but quality-wise it's a throwback to the GH3 encoding which isn't very good. I highly recommend using 4K and then zooming in digitally. Much sharper and a lot of headroom for moving around the frame in post.
  5. Thanks Julian! I've re-rendered the test and it's the correct aspect ratio. Now I have to test 3:2 with my Iscorama.
  6. Unfortunately the 12-35mm is the best lens I think. As for AF, you can do single point, face tracking, mulit-point, and with single point you can use the touch screen to focus even when you're shooting. It's very good. You can use a cheap lens like the 14-42 if you must, but I recommend locking it on a tripod. Only new lenses with Power OIS have good optical stabilization.
  7. @Julian Oops you're right. I'll re-render to 1920x720. Wait, 4:3 for 2x is 2.66, so that means if I use the Isco 1.5x then 4:3 is good for 2.35. Then 3:2 for 2x will be 2.35?
  8. You can check out my night shots on Vimeo. All 4:3 mode with Kowa B&H 2x anamorphic shot at F1.4:
  9. Yes it is now averaging 95mbits for me. Seems to be even more detail now, even in the shadows. Need to test it out more, but there is more detail, especially in the 4K Photo modes.
  10. @nib187 There is a clear difference between the stock MP4 and MOV modes. I believe the MP4 modes are limited to 50mbits where the MOV modes are 100mbits. The new PHOTO 4K mode uses MP4 but it uses a high bitrate, average 95mbits. So is it the same codec as the stock MOV codec? I believe it is, just wondering why they made it MP4 instead of MOV, even though there's no hit on performance.
  11. I've been testing the 4:3 mode and it works really nice. The original 4K files are MOV and around 80mbits average, but the new Photo mode is MP4 and 95mbits average. However I'm wondering if anyone has noticed any changes in the files? Does it matter that it's MP4? So far detail looks really nice. Also need advice on shooting at 1:1 mode. It's just square, and although there's lots of resolution and detail, I just don't know how best to crop it. There's a ton of headroom for moving the frame around, but I'm not sure if it's the best way to shoot for 1:2.40 or 1.266. Maybe 1:2.21? -------- Edit: I'm shooting with 2x Kowa, however advice on 1.5x Iscorama is also appreciated too. Thanks!
  12. @Ken GH4 minimum ISO is 200 in video mode. Yes the Speedbooster is brighter by 1 stop, improves DOF by 1 stop as well. The lens is at F1.4, with Speedbooster it's F1.0. So the Tiffen Vari-ND filter is almost at maximum, but you can see the vigenette is heavy. Besides, it's not really practical to shoot at F1.0. I had a really hard time focusing because I could barely see with so much ND.
  13. @Stephen No diopters at all in this video, only using the "Near" setting on the Anamorphot. Would have been sharper if I did use them though. I'll do that next time. The 30mm has the best look, but they all focus close. The 50mm might be the least minimum distance, but not by much. It was however the hardest to focus under F2.8 that's for sure.
  14. Testing out the new Metabones Speedbooster Canon EF -> m43. Really loving it, and working with Sigma ART lenses it just sings! I really want that shallow depth of field look, and it works a treat. Of course it's really hard to focus at F1, worse using a vari-ND filter too (vignette and darkening of the corners at the highest setting). Paired with the SLR Magic Anamorphot it has a great look!
  15. I just shot this footage this weekend. I only added a little saturation in post. Granted it takes awhile to find the right picture profile, but isn't that true of any camera? Don't REDs and Alexas need a whole lot of post work to make them sing? I don't doubt that Blackmagic is good, I've seen a lot of nice work. GH4 is also capable too. But it's apples and oranges. Use what works for you. If you're not happy with the GH4, then the Blackmagic pocket is priced very well.
  16. I think you should submit this to the FilmConvert contest. I think you could seriously win it. http://www.filmconvert.com/competition_2014/
  17. @JohnBarlow I think you seriously need to rethink your stance on these forums. If you are just here to push your product and then censor other products that you think are "competing" with yours, then you are mistaken. You should step down as moderator if you are going to be biased about this.
  18. I'm with EeeCeeGee - Need to see how it fits on a Kowa or Sankor. I can't see how that large adapter would fit on the smaller projection anamorphics. Forget trying to get those large schnieders, I just can't see myself using something that would require a HUGE rig to support it. Reason why I love my B&H Kowa - small size!

I'm looking for a way to diffuse footage that looks like a filter. My reference is this article by Shane Hurlbut about Tiffen diffusion filters: http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2012/06/diffusion-for-the-digital-age-the-use-of-glass-filtration/ I'd like to do this in post (PPro, AE or Resolve) if possible. Any ideas? Can I get a similar look? Softening of skin, especially for women, and blooming of highlights yet retaining some detail in the shadows?
  22. I have to agree with Andrew. I know a bunch of pro photogs who have switched to mirrorless, mostly Sony. One guy is hard core Nikon with a D800, switched to the A7R, another Canon 1DX switched to the A7S, another Sony A77 switched to the A6000. Why? Smaller, lighter, great image quality. I too am thinking of dumping my 5DmkIII in favor of using my GH4 - for stills! It's just easier to carry, smaller lenses but just as sharp, and great fast AF with great stills quality. I think it's just the natural evolution of things. The old adage of huge bulky cameras is going away. It's about functionality and convenience.
  23. These are real nice shots! Can't wait to see the actual video!
  24. 28mm Full Frame. Check out all my lens tests here:
  25. Here's another GH4 noise test. Need to get half-way through the video to see the actual tests but it's very informative. He covers all ISOs, Master Pedestal, and settings.
