Canon G1X video samples - DIGIC 5 - I'm not impressed
Simco123 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Could well be Canon protecting the sales of the APS-C dSLRs by down grading video quality in the G1X. If you want great video you really need the flexibility to use different lenses. The G1X cant do that so no need to have good video. -
Canon G1X video samples - DIGIC 5 - I'm not impressed
There are no full 1080p samples from the 1DX out there yet to my knowledge. That one is 540p and compressed for the web, can't be judged. The G1X files are straight from the card and can be judged. I am sure the 1DX will be better as it has DIGIC5+, but in case of DIGIC5 on 650D and even 5D Mark III, this doesn't bode well. Remember that all the DIGIC 4 cameras had similar video quality across the board.
So why not compress the G1X video to 540p and see if it is as good as the 1DX sample? The sensor is much faster on the 1DX and I agree with Samuel this means it did would not need line skipping seen in G1X as Canon had already mentioned. -
Canon G1X video samples - DIGIC 5 - I'm not impressed

Strange how Andrew thinks that the G1X is a possible indicator of video quality for the 1DX when there is already a video sample from a 1DX which showed a rather different and much higher quality video than the G1X. Canon already stated that the 1DX when release will have the highest bitrates at 44mbs than any dSLRs so I find this scare mongering a fret over nothing. Canon had digic 4 on smaller compact before and I don't see people making comparison. The G1X samples on dpreview does showed a very mushy green field which contrast greatly with the 1DX sample (see end of clips) http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/1dx/samples/player_heartbeat/movie.html?high -
Live Q&A with Nikon reveals D4 video shortcomings

Still don't know how good the D4 video really is but Canon is reacting to it with firmware features update for the 1DX. -
Live Q&A with Nikon reveals D4 video shortcomings
Simco123 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Of course I already knew only a small down sampled version of the FF output are used for video. When I said the 5D2 has more dynamic range what I really meant was the point of video capture and that it don't clip highlights as much as say the GH2, not the actual DR latitude contained in the video which I'm aware of during editing. My comparison is not with the big guns Alexa, Red et all but certainly video cameras that are $2k-$3k but you are right about stills and video which I never made comment about. I have used the 2mp size stills captured on video from my 5D2 and it is crap so no confusing here. -

What the FF dSLR video has that most other more expensive dedicated video cameras don't is a big sensor and dynamic range. I'm thinking of getting the Canon EOS Cinema dSLR with 4k video which should be out later this year. It will be less than the flagship 1DX. -
I said last summer that the GH3 would be out around March/April 2012 which matches the GH1 to GH2 18 months cycle.

Could have been done on 5DMkII anyway.
from how they comment the video (the creators) it seems like they used the D4
I believe what Andrew meant was the 5DMkII is just as capable of producing the same quality video as the example done by the D4. In another word Andrew doesnt think this D4 sample video is particularly great for a high end camera in comparison to the 3 year old sensor of the 5dMkII. -
Something to do with 10 year anniversary of Canon entry into the professional digital camera? Canon calls the G1X a professional compact.

Live Q&A with Nikon reveals D4 video shortcomings

Nikon are not saying too much about uncompressed HDMI out. Nobody ask about the frame rate limited to 30fps. -
Also 7Dx. There will be no 5DMkIII or 7DMkII. The days of the Mk or Mark for naming Canon dSLRs is over ;)

Nikon D4 official specs leaked - analysis of new video features
It is WAY too early to dump on it. Come on guys. There's no solid info out there yet and the sample videos are highly compressed. My gut feeling is that Expeed 3 will downscale in a similar way to Expeed 3 on the J1 mirrorless so won't be as detailed as it should be, but again... we just don't know for sure.
Can you confirm anything from this demo? Dslrnewsshooter video: Nikon D4 - video feature run through -
Canon - "mirrorless is our future" and video optimised lenses coming 2012

Have a feeling Canon mirrorless is APS-H. The Canon Cinema mirrorless dSLR in development is FF but with an APS-H size crop for 4k video (uncompressed?). -

"Tian Rong Jin" sounds like a Chinese name. Could it be a Chinese translation of a Japanese name? -

The D4 siimply enabled the HDMI out when switched to crop mode. Rather disappointing if true. -

How useful is the uncompress video on the D4? If 30fps is suitable to your needs then yes very useful. However the people most likely interested in uncompress video from a dSLR are filmmakers who would largely shun 30fps so Nikon's decision to op for this frame rate seriously exclude its appeal to the most important section of the market. -

1Dx can read image data faster than D4 therefore less rolling shutter. -

1080p30 HD video at up to 24Mbps only with uncompressed video output. So if you are looking for other frame rates like the filmic 24fps or 25fps they will be compressed onto memory card the conventional way. -

Is'nt 91% crop like APS-H? Canon's Cinema dSLR in development also has the option of 91% for 4k video. I suspect the 91% crop is needed for clean uncompressed video similar to GH2 video tele mode? -

I notice D4 video FX mode is actually cropped at 91%. There is also a native video mode which is true FF. Is this uncompressed video for the cropped FX or native video mode or both? -

Question is how good is this uncompressed video? Nikon has a tradition of taking meanings out of context. At what stage is the uncompression occur? Will there be limitations? How good is the video? -
Is anyone using (and have examples) of the GH2 with any Canon L series lenses? I was on the set of a music video last week, they used a Canon 5D with a 70-200mm and a 24-70mm. The video/pictures were absolutely stunning. I see most people talking about the Voigtlander 25mm though and the Panasonic pancake. While I know (and don't really understand) that people prefer prime lenses, the images produced at the shoot sold me on these other two lenses, at least when hooked to a 5D. Just curious if the $3,000 investment will be worth it when attached to a GH2. Thanks.
The advantage of prime vs zoom lenses are you get less lens distortion and better bokeh. Recent Canon L zoom lenses has improved on sharpness even at wide aperture but L prime still has an edge in that too.
