Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
hoodlum replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
GH3 review just posted. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Panasonic-Lumix-GH3-Digital-Camera-Review/Conclusion.htm "While the Canon 5D Mark III has been the go-to option for these shooters in recent months, our video tests show that the GH3 shoots superior video across the board. The smaller sensor may not provide the extreme shallow depth of field effects you can get from the 5D Mark III, but the GH3’s video looks sharper and stands up better to aggressive editing. And despite the fact that the camera costs almost $2000 less, you get far more compression and codec options." http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Panasonic-Lumix-GH3-Digital-Camera-Review/Video.htm -
Panasonic GH3 real-world test (pre-production firmware)
hoodlum replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
According to this Panasonic Interview the GH3 does binning not line skipping to get to 1080p. http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2012/09/28/qa-with-panasonic-the-story-behind-the-new-gh3-and-compact-system-tech Panasonic: Yes, it's not possible to read out the whole array at 60p. So this means we have to do some pixel combining. We combine 2 x 2 pixels on the sensor, so that makes just one quarter the data that we have to read out. This makes it possible to read out at 60p. Then we combine again to get the 2 megapixel video image. -

I believe the Electronic shutter on the GH3 can also produce full 16mp images just like the G5. -
Must be concerned about the competition as they are announcing this firmware update 6 months in advance.

I wonder if anyone will implement this. http://***URL removed***/news/2012/10/08/Aptina-gives-detail-of-4k-video-capable-10MP-sensor

If you are concerned about the size of the camera than you should definitely try them out. As a GH2 owner I found the A37 grip even smaller than the one on the GH2 (A37 grip is not as tall). Here is a size comparison. http://camerasize.com/compare/#166,326

The latest 1.5 firmware now supports IBIS for legacy lenses.

A great Panasonic interview. Some good discussions on focus peaking and sensor readout. http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2012/09/28/qa-with-panasonic-the-story-behind-the-new-gh3-and-compact-system-tech "At this moment we don't have focus peaking, but 80% or 90% of users are asking for it. If we can successfully negotiate with the engineers, it will be possible. Maybe with a firmware upgrade, we could add this. We understand from the technical division in Japan that the peaking function just depends on software improvements Yes, it's not possible to read out the whole array at 60p. So this means we have to do some pixel combining. We combine 2 x 2 pixels on the sensor, so that makes just one quarter the data that we have to read out. This makes it possible to read out at 60p. Then we combine again to get the 2 megapixel video image."

The Moire issues suggest they may be using the same sensor as the E-M5. The sensor resolution is an exact match too.

Still 4:2:0 for HDMI out. The dimensions of the sensor in the video suggest the GH3 may no longer be using a multi-aspect sensor. That would be an interesting decision if true.

Sony seems to be the only one willing to cannibalize their own products. Every other camera manufacturer tries to project their higher margin products. The RX100 is another example where Sony put all of the latest processing technology and manual controls in a 1" sensor compact camera. It even has the same menu as the Alpha line. I wish others would do the same.

Looks like we'll soon have ND and CPL filter options for the RX100. Along with the RF grip the accessories are starting to come. http://cheesycam.com/examples-with-cpl-filter-on-rx100/

A hack for this will provide another cheap body for video. http://www.3dnews.ru/_imgdata/img/2012/07/13/632251/8.jpg

Thanks Andrew. I will likely get this very soon although 24P and ND filter would have made it perfect.

Canon mirrorless to feature APS-C sensor according to sources
hoodlum replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Unfortunately Canon and Nikon have not developed many prime lenses specifically for their APS-C mounts. At least the FF primes that most own can be used with FF bodies so there is no investment loss (making the switch easier). I wonder if we see any further updates to APS-C mount primes from Nikon and Canon with cheaper FF and mirrorless increasing sales. -
Canon mirrorless to feature APS-C sensor according to sources
hoodlum replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I would not get your hopes up on Canon's mirrorless. They are likely to use the hybrid sensor from the 650D/T4. Looking forward to your RX100 review. -
