1.
Anyone tested this? My understanding was OpenCL is specific to MacOS. Probably limited by some shady agreement with nVidia or stuff. :)
You are correct.  It it even limited to just 2 video cards on the Mac. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/994892 You will not be able to use OpenCL for GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows. And Adobe made a wise move in limiting initial OpenCL GPU acceleration support to those MacBook Pros running OSX Lion equipped with the HD 6750M and HD 6770M chips with 1GB or more VRAM: That particular move was made largely because Apple no longer sells any of its systems with NVIDIA GPUs. The HD 6750M and HD 6770M GPUs in iMacs will also not be supported because those systems with said GPUs have only 512MB of VRAM - too little VRAM to even enable GPU acceleration at all. I'll leave it to our engineering leads/managers (Steve and Dave) to talk about specifics, but there is actually a lot more engineering and testing work that would need to be done to use OpenCL on Windows. When Premiere Pro CS5 came out, Premiere Pro could use about half a dozen cards for GPU acceleration. With each update, we added more, so that it's now more than two dozen, including two using OpenCL. From this, it should be very clear that we are taking a conservative but brisk approach to these GPUs: We will only support what we have been able to implement and test fully, and we'll add more as we get specific requests and have the time/resources to do so.
2. I guess this says it all.  http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/04/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-recall/
3.
So Canon thinks it's better to release things "no one" could afford with stupid things missing (like articulating screen) instead of a great $800 650D wtih GH2-like 1080p that will destroy every single product from competitors and sell millions? I'll never understand how economy works ;D
Companies that try to protect their higher end products will eventually loose out as someone will pickup that low-end market space.  It is beginning to look like Sony and/or Panasonic could start doing that this year.  It'll be interesting to see how video is supported with the GH3 and NEX5 replacement while Panasonic and Sony expand their pro video lines.  Or will they dumb down the video in their traditional cameras.
4. It would be interesting to see the 800E with this.  :)
5.
I wondering if Panasonic is going release an industry standard 1.5-ish crop? Hate to say this, but if Panasonic sticks with the Micro 4/3rd 2x crop, it will never be used on high profile, marquee type projects no matter how high the resolution. The aesthetic is noticeably different, at least to Pros. Can they make Micro 4/3rd at least a 1.6x crop? Is that even possible?
You could say the same about FF vs 1.5 crop.  Actually the difference between m43 (1.85 crop in video) vs 1.5 crop is small compared to the drop from FF.  Lens selection will have a greater impact.
6. Panasonic and Sony will be pushing 4k very soon at the consumer level.  I don't see either Canon or Nikon doing this as they will try to reserve 4k for their higher margin high-end professional lines. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20120409-702538.html "Last week, Hirai spoke briefly ahead of a preview of Sony's presentation for its professional products division and pledged to spread cutting-edge technologies from its professional products to more mass-market products. One example presented by Hirai was Sony's 4K technology, a display and imaging breakthrough for presenting moving images four times sharper than existing high-definition video. "
7. This is huge!!!  I have included some of Vitaliy's responses to questions so far.  Panasonic will be joinging the thread on Monday. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2739/the-big-thing/p1 Since today we are going to directly participate in design and development of system cameras firmware for selected cameras produced by Panasonic Corporation, and DSC Business unit specifically. Q. Do you think that information to help you with the current GH2 hack might be made available to you and the team? A. Already working on firmware v2.0 changes. Some companies will be very upset with their $5000 cameras. Q. Any word on Picture profiles in the 2.0 firmware? A. Can't talk prior NAB much. But can give you a clue. You won't call them Picture profiles in v2.0. Q. is it for the photo camera side or video or both A. Right now - about 60% video, all the rest photo related. Q. This all sounds a bit too good to be true A. Not so good as I hoped.  As for many Panasonic cameras hacks still will be the only way of improvements. Even GH2 is tough, as most developers are working now on three new cameras based on new Venus Revolution LSI. A. I will tell only that I can. None of new cameras will write in AVCHD container anymore. None will support interlaced modes. And all will support >2Gb files, no spanning. A. Venus Revolution is code name for new LSI, as well as name for the team who works on it's design and related software libraries. It'll be used in upcoming cameras. As for GH2. Many people told the same for GH1. Due to new features, new cameras won't be in direct competition to GH2.  After NAB 1080p60 will be considered past tense. Can't tell more, sorry. Q. what is the duration of your agreement with Panasonic A. RIght now till the end of Venus Revolution active life. About 2 years. Do not know anything after it.
8.
News is spreading: This is another guys post about talking about the merits of 4K.  Sony will have a huge winner here. The point is 1080p and REAL 1080p FS100: http://produktdbimages3.slashcam.de/..._klein_204.jpg Canon C300: http://produktdbimages0.slashcam.de/..._klein_260.jpg Both 1080p, C300 with 4 K Sensor.See the difference ? ^^
Links are not working.
9.
And we're going to have to wait till September for a response from Panasonic?  Anyone else nervous it's going to be too little too late?
Sony seems to be very aggressive with getting big new advances out.  Since Panasonic's GH and AF series change only once every 2 years, they cannot afford a minor update.
10.

Seeing how the video and 1080/60p for slow motion holds up will be very informative too.
1080/60p halves the 24p bitrate on the NEX-7 to 14mb/s, so right there you have a big step back in quality.
Makes you wonder if Sony is going to pull this with their full frame dslr. I hope not.
It'll be interesting to see what Panasonic does with the GH3.
11.
Seeing how the video and 1080/60p for slow motion holds up will be very informative too.
1080/60p halves the 24p bitrate on the NEX-7 to 14mb/s, so right there you have a big step back in quality.
12. The GH3 will likely come with AVCHD 2.0 and support 24p @ 28mpbs.  This will likely be better than the GH2 hack with the vanilla patch.  Other improvements will likely make the upgrade worthwhile and then just wait for the GH3 to be hacked.
13. Since you already have a very good video camera, I would wait until the GH3 in September and then make a decision.
14. It is amazing how much effort went into designing the lens for this camera, while no effort was placed on the overall camera speed.  Maybe Sony will get it right with their large sensor fixed zoom camera.  At least the video should look good with their APS-C sensor and manual controls. http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-a-sony-surprise-a-compact-camera-with-aps-c-sensor-and-fixed-zoom/
15. Thanks Sara.  I have a Sandisk UHS-I 45mb card that I will try.
16.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_pictures Quantum is currently the highest quality but also try Flomotion.  Both can be found here: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/categories/hacks
But is the Quantum reliable at that high of a bitrate?
17. Is there a glossary of terms somewhere for these hack patches.  Not used to all these terms Intra, GOP and other short forms.  Just picked up a GH2 with MKE400 and trying to figure out where to start with video.
18. The GH3 is not coming until Photokina according to comments from Panasonic.  So expect rumors in August, announcement in September and released just before Christmas (assuming you can find one).  I picked up a used GH2 a week ago for less than $600 locally.  Decided not to wait.
19. Saw this from a dpreview interview. http://***URL removed***/articles/6531373190/interview-tetsuya-yamamoto-of-nikon "There’s good news, potentially for videographers too - according to Yamamoto 'the [J1 and V1’s] sensor is capable of 2K (2048×1080px) and 4K (~4000px horizontal resolution) video and in the future we hope to incorporate [these functions]'."
20. And Panasonic interview comments on GH2 hack. http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2012/01/15/panasonic-learning-from-the-fringe-taking-small-steps "We do take a look at what they do, and we take it very seriously, because obviously that's what the customer wants. There are some limitations within the hardware and within the system specifications. For example, the AVCHD format; you know, we have to stay within the confines of what that AVCHD format says. Yes, you can go outside that with some hyped-up features and firmware updates and that sort of thing, but then you're outside the normal specification, and for us as a manufacturer, we really have to stay within it. At the same time, we know the level that the sensors can handle, we know the amount of cooling it's going to take, and to push it past it's limits, you're going to degrade the life expectancy of the product. Now, with a hopped-up camera, you somewhat expect that. You know, it's just like a car; if you push your car to the limit, you know something's going to happen eventually, right? So, as a consumer, go for it! But as a manufacturer, we have to stay within the limits of the standards and what we know the system itself can handle long term."
21. As expected it has a 1.5" sensor which fits between APS-C and m43. http://***URL removed***/previews/canong1x/
22. Better translation here.  I still don't think Canon is ready to jump in yet.  Hence the G1X. http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/hot-canon-talks-about-his-mirrorless-future-will-not-go-the-same-way-of-nikon/#comments 1) The Canon spokesman does NOT confirm (or deny) that they will release a mirrorless system in 2012. Any suggestion of such is due to the interviewer/website (eg: “We asked Canon about rumors of releasing a mirrorless in 2012″). 2) The spokesman does not say image quality comes before downsizing. He says that image quality AND small size are two essential (non-negotiable) considerations for developing a new system. The rest of the interview, he continually dodges making any hard statements about which (large sensor or small system size) would come first. A couple interesting QAs from the interview: –What sort of unique features do you [Canon] have in mind, if you were to create a new lens mount? “There are already many mirrorless interchangeable lens systems, but the rate of changing lenses is surprisingly low. I don’t have any specific numbers, but when you consider the number of lenses being sold, you can sense that relatively few people are using interchangable lenses.* So, what should we do to increase the usage of interchangable lenses? In order to heighten the appeal of interchangable lens format, it is necessary to also take into account the needs of making the system more compact.” [* Note: he probably means in comparison to lens usage across traditional SLR formats.] –After introducing a new system, when you think about the time it takes to establish a lens system, it’s possible that image sensor performance will improve. If having a compact system overall is the first priority, wouldn’t it be better to focus on the size [of the system] that you want to end up with a few years from now? “Yes, sensor performance will probably continue to improve. But at this point in time, it would be great if we could improve [light receiving] sensitivity of APS-C size sensors. In doing so, the breadth of photographic capability will greatly increase. “In saying that, it’s possible that a time will come when we can downsize the image sensor size. In making the entire system more compact, we next have to deal with the lens constraints (eg: resolution, chromatic abberation, etc). Of course we have to worry about timing when it comes to developing a comprehensive small system, but that’s still far away.” Also, the spokesman’s name is actually Mr. Masaya Maeda. Google Translate is garbage and attempted to translate his name using Chinese reading.
23. The online communities are underestimating the sensor size.  Many will be surprised with the announcement next week.  This is what the Nikon 1 should have been.
24. A compact sleeper for 2012 could be the new Canon G series that is suppose to have a larger sensor, fast lens and geared more towards video (built-in ND filter helps too).  I think we'll find out in Jan/Feb timeframe.
25. Actually I was referring to your comment on the Nikon 1.  :)
