1. saveer, I am thinking the same thing as you. By the way, I think the GoPro video footage is amazing. The price is amazing too. DSLR camera manufacturers could give us way more. They'll try to get as much from the consumer before offering more. Throw a few crumbs at a time so they can profit more. Part of the game. What GoPro shows is competition will be fierce in the near future.
  2. Andrew, good article. This camera is exciting. It shows camera manufacturers could up the ante. If GoPro developed an interchangeable mount, 2.7K or 4K camera for a reasonable price, they'd take the lion share of the camera market. Some info on GoPro's CineForm Studio below.

GoPro's CineForm Studio line of editing tools makes it easy to create professional quality clips from your GoPro content or prep for more advanced editing with Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, etc. From simple adjustments like slow motion control and clip trimming to more advanced color correction and 3D editing, CineForm Studio is a powerful tool for all GoPro content creators.
    CineForm Studio features:

Keep your GoPro cameras and BacPacs current with the latest software updates

Easy playback and trimming of your GoPro video clips

Frame rate adjustment for slow motion

Quickly create videos from your timelapse photos

Convert GoPro H.264 MP4s into editor friendly CineForm AVI or MOV files

Apply real-time, non-destructive image adjustments that don't require re-rendering as changes are applied.

Adjust video white balance, exposure, contrast, saturation and framing

Support for ProTune and push-button color presets

Process and adjust videos captured with the GoPro's 3D HERO System

Export MP4/MOV for web sharing, including pre-formatted 3D content for YouTube and 3D TVs

Preview 3D content on supported 3D monitors and TVs

Support for other H.264 MOV/MP4 sources such as Canon and Nikon DSLRs

  3. ]GoPro Hero3 Black Edition Puts 4K Video Capture on Your Helmet

    By Jim Fisher

    October 17, 2012 10:01am EST

GoPro today unveiled its new Hero3 camcorder, which continues the rugged tradition of the HD Hero2 and comes in three versions—the Black Edition, Silver Edition, and White Edition.

GoPro cameras are renowned for their rugged features and small design, which makes them appropriate for helmet mounting. The cameras are often used by skiers, rock climbers, divers, and other fans of extreme sports to record their exploits.

The Black Edition is making waves, as it is the first camera of its size to support 4K video capture, a format that delivers four times as many pixels as 1080p. The $400 camcorder includes a waterproof housing that is rated for use at depths of up to 197 feet, a few different types of mounts, and a Wi-Fi remote control.

The 4K resolution does come with a catch—at its top setting, recording is limited to a paltry 12 frames per second, which will appear choppy when played back at normal speed—but can be sped up for smooth playback, although the speed of motion may remind you of an old silent film. You can grab 2.7k footage at a more reasonable 30 frames per second, 1080p footage at 60fps, and 720p at an impressive 120fps—making high-def slow motion recording a reality.

There are a few other improvements compared to the Hero2. The Black Edition shoots 12-megapixel photos at up to 30fps, and promises to perform better in low light. Its lens features a 6-element design with aspherical elements, the microphone has been improved, and Wi-Fi is now built in to the camera.

If the $400 price tag is too much to swallow, you can opt for the $300 Silver Edition or the $200 White Edition. Both cameras top out at 1080p30, ship with the waterproof housing, and feature built-in Wi-Fi, but you'll have to purchase the $80 Wi-Fi remote control separately. The major difference between the two models is still image resolution—the Silver Edition captures photos at 11 megapixels, while the White Edition is limited to 5 megapixels.

All three cameras are scheduled to go on sale next week.

  6. If more competition enters, then it affects pricing. Look at how pricing has come down on the high end cameras in the last couple of years. Maybe some camera manufacturer will up the ante as BMC has done so? If not Sony, perhaps JVC or Panasonic or other?
  7. Remember the movie: Real Steel? Shot with the F35 cinealta. The picture is amazing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433035/technical
    Used $13000 range. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Sony-F35-Cinealta-camera-/160872810795

Sony has the know how. Their market share in these high end cameras have taken a hit. As in the Real Steel movie, perhaps Sony can show their power robot? If Sony could offer a top notch 4K video camera in the $10000 to $14000 range, they could take a serious bite out of the competition. Sony has the know how. Canon came out with their C300 and is coming out with their 1DC and C500. Sony has alot to gain if they play this correctly? Take out the Canon 1DC, C500, Red Scarlet with one huge right cross. Will Sony go for it? I'm probably totally in left field.

I don't mind more competition entering the scene. Why is RED offering their Scarlet deal? ;) All these barely used Scarlets (used for a few seconds) and needed to be unloaded? Or is Red taking the first shot before the fight begins? Let the speculation run till October 30. Is Canon listening?

  9. Yep, one can decipher what is going on? Sony PMW F3 not available any more.

    The New F
This is our placeholder for TheNewF camcorder from Sony, to be fully revealed on 30th October 2012.
It is anticipated that TheNewF could be an updated successor to the PMW-F3 super 35mm camcorder sporting improved 'broadcast friendly' 50Mb/s recording quality and a whole range of other improvements...
We're not allowed to disclose exact specifications at the moment, all we can say for sure is that "TheNewF is probably the most exciting product that we can't tell you about"
  11. Good article with info.

  12. JCS,

It could be 2.35:1. He has high hopes for uncompressed 422. He's been alluding to the uncompressed for the 5D3 for a while.

    Alex, the key programmer comments:
I didn't experiment with it, it's just on paper. Benchmarks say that it might work with lexar 1000x cards (maybe not FullHD, but maybe 2.35:1 or something like this).

Alex's prior post:I have higher hopes for uncompressed 422 video saved on the card, not via HDMI.
  13. Read this link if interested. Interesting possible for the 5D3.

  14. There could be hope for MJPEG with the DSLR's? Here's a post from Alex (the programming wizard). There needs to be alot of work still. There are NO guarantees. For viewing the MJPEG recording use VLC or mplayer. You'll notice a quality difference. :) Keep supporting these guys as who knows what may transpire?

    Alex's post:

I think the best way is to re-program the DMA to write the jpegs in your own huge buffer (up to 192 MB if I remember well). This is how I plan to do it to get rid of frame skipping.
