The video looks, well, like f'n film! Look at the black detail. Check out 5:40 to see the video in action. It is still early but this camera looks very, very interesting. https://vimeo.com/49464083

[sub]1080p HD video, full-frame sensor, Live View focusing options[/sub] [sub]Will it have a video image as robust as an Alexa??? Leica's reputation is on the line with this camera. Will it have awesome video (or will it not be only okay)? Perhaps Andrew can get his hands on this camera??? Wouldn't it be funny if this camera has superb video beyond what is expected? Leica usually distinguishes itself from the rest with their quality. Let the fun begin.[/sub] The new M press blurb: The perfection of digital rangefinder technology Solms, Germany (September 17, 2012) – Leica Camera presents a groundbreaking milestone in the nearly 60 year history of the Leica rangefinder system: The Leica M. Setting entirely new standards, the Leica M unites the ultimate in rangefinder precision with cutting edge digital technology. As the first camera to implement a newly designed CMOS image sensor and to feature additional focusing methods and functions such as Live View and Full HD video capability, it is the most versatile Leica rangefinder model ever. Remaining true to the legendary values of the M-System, the Leica M not only provides the advantages of rangefinder photography, but also for the first time, offers compatibility with Leica R legacy lenses. As with every innovation and development since the flagship line’s inception, the Leica M was created to capture fleeting moments of time and transform them into living history. The Leica M also marks the beginning of a new era in the Leica product naming policy. In future, Leica M and S model names will omit the number suffix to emphasize the enduring and long-term significance of the respective systems.- In every respect, the new Leica M is the most innovative and versatile model the modern M-System has ever created. Looking to the future, the Leica M is the first in a long line of Leica rangefinder cameras to feature a completely new development in sensor technology; the Leica Max CMOS image sensor. This 24 MP, full 35 mm format sensor was designed and constructed in collaboration with CMOSIS especially for the camera and its use with M- and R-Lenses. This new development successfully transfers the characteristic advantages of CCD sensors, such as natural and brilliant color rendition and impressive reproduction of details, to a CMOS sensor. In combination with the high-performance Leica Maestro processor that is also employed in Leica S cameras, this new full format sensor guarantees maximum imaging quality and speed. Now, all elements in the image creation chain, from the lens to the image file, are under complete control of the Leica engineers. This guarantees the ultimate in imaging performance and quality. An additional highlight is the low power consumption of the components that, in conjunction with the particularly high capacity of the battery, ensures outstanding performance over a long period of use. - In 1954, the launch of the M-System opened new horizons in reportage and artistic photography. Now at the dawn of a new era in the system’s technology, the Leica M offers a multitude of new features. The first of these are Live View and Live View Focus. Image composition can now take place in real time with the view of the subject through the lens. The sharpness, exposure and color content of images can now be precisely assessed on the camera’s large, 3-inch, high-resolution monitor screen with 920,000 pixels. The glass covering plate of the monitor screen is manufactured from particularly tough and scratch-resistant Corning®Gorilla®Glass. The new Live View function allows photographers to have access to entirely new opportunities that, in combination with the outstanding performance of Leica M- and R-Lenses, go far beyond the classical capabilities of rangefinder photography. This applies particularly to macro and telephoto photography, but also allows even more discreet shooting. In combination with M- and R-Lenses, the camera’s new 1080p Full HD video capability also opens up further opportunities to record memories as they happen. - Ever in pursuit of capturing Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “Decisive Moment,†the Leica M offers two additional focusing methods that can be activated quickly and easily with the new focus button. M-Photographers now have even more options for capturing outstandingly sharp images. The new ‘Live View Zoom’ option enables up to 10 x magnification for precise assessment of the sharpness of subject details or the close focusing limit. The second aid to focusing is ‘Live View Focus Peaking’. Here, contours in the subject are automatically displayed as red lines to allow simple and convenient focus assessment. Focusing precision can be assessed on the basis of the intensity of the lines displayed. - The Leica M’s features are optimally combined with the typical values of the Leica rangefinder system and guarantee the accustomed dependability of the Leica M in all photographic situations, from available light photography to discreet and aesthetic fine-art image composition. In line with the principles of the M-Philosophy, all functions and features are designed and constructed for absolute robustness and a long working life. The top deck and the base plate of the Leica M are machined from solid brass blanks and the full-metal chassis is a completely self-contained diecast element manufactured from high-strength magnesium alloy. Special rubber seals protect the camera body against dust, spray and moisture. - The new rangefinder camera is also a typical M due to its intuitive handling concept with direct manual setting options and fast access to functions. The enhanced layout and particular user-friendliness of the menu interface guarantees a clear and uncomplicated overview of all camera settings at all times. Dedicated button controls have been provided for the Live View and new focusing functions. Live View Zoom and Live View Focus Peaking can be selected with the new focus button on the front of the camera. User profiles can be programmed with any camera and shooting settings, stored under an arbitrary name. They can be accessed quickly whenever required for particular situations and can now also be saved to an SD memory card. For increased comfort in use and harkening to the film advance lever of Leica film cameras, the Leica M now provides an ergonomically formed thumb rest with an integrated setting dial at the top right on the back of the top deck. This ensures that the camera can be held securely in even the most demanding situations. - A wide range of optional accessories is also available for the new Leica M. A particular highlight of the range is a new Leica R-Adapter M that allows almost all R-Lenses ever built to be mounted on the camera. The use of Leica R-System lenses now opens up vast new possibilities for zoom, telephoto and macro photography. - Further accessories are the Leica EVF2, Visoflex electronic viewfinder and a multifunctional handgrip-M with an integrated GPS module that, in combination with optional finger loops in various sizes (S, M and L), helps to ensure safe and steady handling of the camera and lens system. The range also includes a Leica Microphone Adapter set for perfect sound with video recordings. - The Leica M will be available from Leica dealers, including the Leica Store Washington DC, in early 2013 in a choice of black paint or silver chrome finish.
There's a microphone adaptor set with a stereo mic. Are they serious? Anyone who can afford a Leica M and lenses for their video production would be better served with BMC or Ikonoskop.
Leica is quality so wait and see. There will be an adapter for Leica R lenses, which are awesome lenses. What if the video is close to an Alexa? Would it be then too expensive? You never can judge till you see. Leica entering into video scene brings more competition. Cheers.

This has really got me glued to this. The bitrate beta testing has been moving along really good so far. It seems a buffer issue needs to be tweaked. If so, we may have some top bitrates coming from the Canons! Programmer JasonATL says, 2. I think that, if this feature can be further refined (and it is darn near good enough for me already), that most will find this one of the best features of ML. People want clean HDMI out to be able to get 4:2:2 or increase bitrate. This satisfies the latter. And, seeing the results that I'm seeing, would really call into question the need for 4:2:2 for most people, I suspect. Programmer 1% responded about the merits of MJPEG422, I do a bit of chroma key stuff and seeing the color on the demo vid was great. Also you gain some zoom out of it like in crop mode but lose the in camera uprezing. Also would kill 30 minute limit which nobody has been able to so far.

This is a thought. Don't shoot me for trying. Here's the score: If you are Canon owner and want better video quality then you may want to donate to the Magic Lantern people. Make sure to mention you want the MJPEG 422 investigation to advance. (Donate then inbox Alex the MJPEG422 request? - the key is he sees alot of interest) Supposedly Alex, the programmer has done work on this already. There are some programmers willing to give it a go. These programmers don't want to start from scratch and want Alex's data. If people donate and encourage the MJPEG 422 investigation then Alex may release his work to those programmers willing to investigate. Even if you aren't a Canon owner, you may want to consider donating $5 or more. Why? Well, if they get this to work on the Canon 600D, that camera can be bought for around $400 to $500. Imagine having MJPEG 422 (and possible 2K) for that price. It would be a nice second camera! No guarantees. But the programmer 1% has already advanced the Bitrate developments to new levels. Read below. Bitrate investigation: 1% says, "Its stable enough. Only problem is the buffer saving function will drop quality really really quick." (they are trying to figure out the buffer issue, if they do then we'll could possible have 100 mbp/s to 170 mbp/s) Here's what 1% is saying about the MJPEG: 1% says, "I think MJPEG is worth it. You're already uprezzing the same thing, just losing extra color. Alex hasn't released any code so we can't work on it without starting from scratch. Perhaps more donations for this are in order. There are a few devs at least willing to give it a go, just need a starting point. Even if you have to convert the movies before opening them its still a win. Audio is pretty much done and I don't think we can push the encoder much further." 1% also says: Mjpeg the way to go. Its a1ex's code so you have to convince him. He already sees all of this but has no 600D and isn't a big bit rate fan. You pretty much have it right tho. LV buffer is what it sees through the line skps and then it uprezzes that (process is called something in imaging, not new). Overhead will be saved from the uprezzing (probably why 720P has 60FPS). Only danger is that we put in a lot of work and its impossible hw wise, etc. Donate for that rather than polishing canon's turd of an H264 implementation. Right now everything is 5DIII but there are a few devs willing to work on it, just we have no starting point besides the LV buffer address. A1ex some sort of implementation already and its for 5dII so probably more portable. I think he wanted to make something really good before releasing but other things took over. I think its really good already even if you can't play the videos back in camera or have to convert them before viewing, etc. All I saw is demo vids. Other cameras are a lot of effort to port and I don't have the firmwares which take 2 days to decompile anyway. The other cameras may not have the same functions (50d gop didn't change) plus crippled by the 4gb limit which gives you 4 minutes (550D out already)... a little too short. Also don't have the cameras themselves on hand so I'd be coding blind and a simple mistake could be a headache. MJPEG I think is less camera specific.

@Andrew and QuickHitRecord, I liked Rubber too. I don't want to take away from the GH3 discussion, but the next movie created after Rubber was "Wrong." I still have to watch Wrong, however it should rank with Rubber. By the way, I like there are alot of camera choices coming on the scene. Gotta luv the competitive spirit!

For the history buffs, the movie "Rubber" had the same motel in it. The movie was shot using the Canon 5D2. Trailer: around 1:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G5pyFhmAqE GH3 video: check the motel out....at 4 seconds....at 34 seconds... Nikon D600 on top. I wonder if Canon ears are perking? Competition is here. GH3 is around the corner too. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Digital-Cameras/zgbs/electronics/281052

GH3 with timecode, XLR, peaking, OLED viewfinder and magnesium alloy body
FilmMan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yea, you can say the video is a tease. Parts look very filmic. Other video parts lead to questions. Canon should take notice with all the competition. Panasonic, Sony and Nikon. Wow. -

New Canon Pricing???????????????????? Australia company listing for sub $10,000? That would be more realistic pricing due to the competition here and coming. I find using a higher CBR is helping with color grading - can push the image more in color grading. With alot of the prior posts, some Magic Lantern guys are trying new programming which isn't released. Hoping it becomes stable and is eventually released. Still early. Cheers.
The camera is going for around $2000. The clarity is amazing especially for the price. This could turn into the "Indie" camera. Look at 1:36 of the video, guy driving. Nice skin tones and range. Imagine a better lens on this baby with the uncompressed hdmi. Wow. Good stuff Nikon!!!
Made a mistake. Was referring to this video. https://vimeo.com/album/2074083/video/49395253

Downloaded some D600 footage. Pushed the colors. Very nice!
It's only Canon now who don't give an uncompressed out via HDMI... Nikon and Sony are there now.
Jgharding, very good point. People will start to switch over to the competitor DSLR's and it could end up too late for Canon. They better hurry.

There has been talk about 4:2:2 mjpeg, whether this comes to reality is questionable. If 4:2:2 mjpeg is a possible as thought, it would be nice to see this get the top priority as it could open the majority of Canon cheaper model cameras to alot better video. It would be disruptive. We'll have to wait and see. Alot more work needs to be done (according to a key ML programmer). The bitrate testing looks to be positive so far.
