http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/07/sony-introduces-handheld-pmw-200-422-xdcam/ Sony Introduces Handheld PMW-200 4:2:2 XDCAM Successor to PMW-EX1R Offers 50 Mbps MXF Recording, Genlock, Timecode By Bryant Frazer / Jul 25, 2012 Sony has improved on the PMW-EX1R XDCAM with the new PMW-200, which offers MPEG HD422 recording to SxS cards at 50 Mbps. Sony is positioning it in part as an ideal B-camera counterpart to the $25,000 PMW-500. The PMW-200 is expected to ship in September for a list price of $7790. The camera captures imagery via three 1/2-inch Exmor CMOS chips. The increased quality of 4:2:2 recording is a nice upgrade, but the workflow advantage is the PMW-200's support for the MXF container and the UDF file system. UDF is the basis for recording to the Blu-ray optical-disc recording media favored by reality-TV producers (due to the high shooting ratios and low cost of media), and it's also utilized by the PMW-500. That means the PMW-200 allows facilities to use the same UDF/MXF recording mode across both memory cards and optical media, using established XDCAM workflow. (However, the PMW-100 does not generate a separate proxy when shooting in MXF mode.) The PMW-200 also supports 35 Mbps and 25 Mbps MP4 and DVCAM recording tp SxS in the FAT format, making it fully backward compatible with existing XDCAM EX workflows. The PMW-200 is far from a replacement for the PMW-500, which is a shoulder-mount camera boasting 2/3-inch CCDs. Still, Sony officials say it's a nice improvement over the EX1R, boosting the signal-to-noise ratio from 54 to 56 dB and sensitivity from F10 at 2000 lux to F11. Compare that to published figures of 59 dB and F11 (60i) and F12 (50i) for the PMW-500. "They're pretty well matched," Sony Electronics Senior Product Manager Christopher Tsai tells StudioDaily. "The EX1R has always been noted for really good sensitivity with low noise, and we already have a lot of people who are using the EX1R like a B camera with the PMW-500 — or even the PDW-F800." Another upgrade from the EX1R is the ability to record up to four channels of 24-bit LPCM audio in the MXF container, the same as the PMW-500. The viewfinder is the same, but the 3.5-inch LCD panel has been upres'd from 640×480 to 852×480, and a new Wi-Fi option for remote operation via mobile app should be available via a firmware upgrade that''s scheduled to go online in December. The 14x zoom fixed Fujinon lens has been ported over unchanged from the EX1R, meaning existing lens accessories like the VCL-EX0877 .8x wide converter will work with the new camera. The EX1R's slow-and-quick speed and slow-shutter options are also intact, along with the 15-second cache recording feature, and the battery system and accessories are the same. In the interest of full disclosure, we asked Tsai which significant features from the EXR1 are missing. He said there are three.

The Shot Transition push-button feature for moving automatically between two sets of presets (focus, zoom, etc) has been discarded
Component video out is gone. Instead, the camera has a BNC terminal for composite video out that doubles as a genlock in. Another BNC enables timecode in and out. (The EXR1 had neither genlock in nor timecode in/out.) HDMI and SDI output are still there, of course. "We took off one output connector and gave you two additional," Tsai says.
The PMW did not inherit the rotating handgrip from the EXR1.
No doubt one or more of these will be dealbreakers for some users. For more details, take a look at the official press release or click on over to the official XDCAM website.

Sorry Guys for another post. With respect to batteries. If you use a generic battery, you don't know how much charge left on it. I wonder if ML's battery life display works for generic batteries? Interesting. Battery remaining 60D and 5D Mark II only: displays battery percentage, estimated time remaining and battery discharging rate. For accurate readings, wait until the percentage indicator decreases by at least 2% since powering on

I like the options for the Display. Wow. Options for display (most of them are for LiveView). LV contrast Adjusts the contrast in LiveView. It doesn't affect recording. This helps when focusing with very flat picture styles. Values: Normal (no effect), High, Very high, Zero, Very low, Low. LV saturation Adjusts the saturation in LiveView.
WhenIdle: In this mode, all the overlays are erased from the screen (100% clean display) when the camera is idle (i.e. you don't press any buttons).
Always: In this mode, all the overlays are erased from the screen; you will have to change shooting settings blindly. I was thinking the same thing. I like having competition in the video realm but you need to really standout especially if you are a entering the video field. BM is coming in at around $3K and is an established company (although not in the video camera sector). Competition heating up... 1. Sony Fs700 2. Scarlet 3. Used Redmx (movies still be shot on these cameras) 4. BM coming 5. Canon 1DC coming 6. Possible JVC (their fix lense 4k camera is better than people think) interchangeable camera. 7. Leica camera? 8. Digital Bolex. 9. And others...

Dan, If possible, can you list the lenses used in the various shots too? I received an email yesterday from Kineraw with the links and played with some of the footage.

Interesting stuff. I like the possibility of clean HDMI out. Progress is being made with the Digic Registers. Fast Zebras is an improvement. Contrast and saturation adjustments for display when using flat pic style. And so on. New fast zebras in Magic Lantern If you have used Magic Lantern before, you have probably noticed that zebras were a little slow. Magic Lantern v2.3 comes with a very fast version of zebras, without any lag, suitable for monitoring scenes with fast motion. Zebras are found on professional video cameras, used for marking the areas where highlights are clipping and where shadows are being crushed. In crushed areas, there is no recoverable data being recorded, meaning there will be no detail, only black. Conversely, in clipped areas such as bright clouds on a sunny day, there will be no details in the clouds that could otherwise show their subtle shading. With Magic Lantern's implementation of fast luma Zebras; clipped areas are displayed as red, crushed shadows are shown as blue. Used in combination with the RGB histogram, Zebras are a great tool for judging your exposure. There are times when clipped highlights are acceptable for a better overall exposure, such as when filming a live concert. Bright stage lights will most often clip; while your histogram will show the scene as having clipped areas, the Zebras can show you precisely what is being clipped, allowing the user to decide if this is a reasonable compromise in setting exposure. You can now properly expose the scene just to the point before clipping begins to move beyond the stage lights. Tip: in these situations, enabling Highlight Tone Priority, using a flat picture style and applying negative gain from advanced ISO settings in Magic Lantern will help you get more shadow details and less clipped highlights. Based on Canon's method Canon's method for checking clipped areas is done during playback, by configuring the display image processor to highlight those areas. We have understood how this process works and extended it, enabling live zebras with zero lag, and, best of all, without any extra CPU usage - the new zebras are effectively computed by the display image processor. As a result, there's more CPU power available for Magic Lantern background tasks (like histogram and waveform), and the release of ML v2.3 just feels faster and much more responsive. When using fast zebras, the camera cannot display both overexposed and underexposed simultaneously - that is the price paid for efficiency. By default, Underexposure is disabled in the ML menu; you may enable both underexposure and overexposure, but in this case, the screen will switch between overexposed and underexposed markers every two seconds. Furthermore, the fast Luma method does not allow for the display of stripes - the clipped highlights are now a solid red. If you prefer the old implementation, it's still available. Tip: Many filmmakers believe that, when filming interviews, it's best to set Zebras / Overexposure to 70% to maintain proper skin tone exposure, while other find 80% to be optimal. The argument here is that over 70% the skin starts to shine and over 75% the face begins loosing fine details [citation dvinfo]. Technical details: zebras are enabled by reconfiguring the display device via DIGIC registers (for example, here we have used the register is located at 0xC0F140CC). There are many other handy features implemented using these registers, like LiveView contrast/saturation adjustments for display (useful for focusing with flat picture styles), cleaner ISOs (like ISO 80 or ISO 50), FPS override, or custom image effects for video mode. After the 2.3 release we will continue researching this area, as there are many promising features that might become possible (such as clean HDMI out, anamorphic lens support or full-screen zoom while recording). Your help is more than welcome, as there are "only" 65536 DIGIC registers to be analyzed by brute force!

The GH2 has an amazing image. When I tested on tv, some GH2 videos are amazing, some not as amazing (even though they look good on a computer screen). The person shooting the footage and spending the time to get it right is important. DSLR's can be challenging. You need to know what you are doing or you can end up with crummy images. I have alot of practice at achieving the crummy. The price of the GH2 and the image it gives tells us that the other camera manufacturers could offer more. $700 camera... As Shawn has stated, more testings under a variety of situations would be nice to include too. PS. I'll still choose the Alexa over the GH2. I only need to find one for around $700. Cheers everyone.

The world economic situation is not the best. People want value for their hard earned cash. A person has to be careful when buying a camera as the technology changes and prices depreciate rapidly. Last year used Red MX packages went for $30K or so (from a new price of $35K). This year they are going for around $12K. That is a big hit. My point is people have to be wise when selecting what they need. Used Scarlet packages are cropping up and a $2K discount is inorder. There has been alot of talk about Canon with their "what they want to give" and their pricing. Competition will have an impact on Canon. Look what happen in the cell phone market. For example, the company Research in Motion - Blackberry. Apple with the iphone took the market. Competition lurks. If another competitior camera becomes embraced as the 5D2 then that will affect Canon's market share more than they envisioned. Other companies, including Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, etc. (and possibly Leica) are in the video DSLR market and trying to gain their stake. The next few months should paint a different picture of the camera landscape as BM and Kineraw come on the scene. So spend wisely if purchasing a camera. My ramblings for today.

Leang, They were intitially hoping for May 2012 for release in China. 2nd half of 2012 for rest of the world. Obviously still tweaking. Could be anytime now...The sooner they get it out(without glitches) then the better. S35 model. I heard pricing in the $7000 to $8000 range. I would like to see a price of $5000, if it would be possible, but highly doubt. Maybe $7500....The lower the price Kineraw can offer, the more enticing. Of course the quality needs to be there. Cheers.

Andrew, good article. If Kineraw beats BM out of the gate, then things will be very interesting. There has been talk of BM orders taking till October with first shipments supposedly end of this month? The BM looks to be an amazing camera. However, the Kineraw is shaping up to be an amazing camera too. The Chinese are clever. What if the final Kineraw image turns out to be extremely close to an Alexa's image? Pricing of the Kineraw will be very important (due to Kineraw being a new company, trying to gain market penetration and competition such as BM). Kineraw S35 "crop" is attractive. If Kineraw attains the "Alexa" quality, then people will recongnize this quickly as news travels very fast via the internet. We live in different times. I like the competition. I wonder if Canon is realizing what is creeping up quickly.

Saying the BM has amazing DR? ::) John Brawley quote: http://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/puberty-blues-first-promo/ In early pre we tested the C300 and the Alexa pretty heavily. In the end we decided to use the C300 sparingly, mainly because the DR didn’t match as well and we found that there wasn’t as much “bending†room in the grade, mostly because of the codec with the canon being still fairly compressed. Our conditions were going to be tough in terms of contrast. Australian sun and beach isn’t very forgiving. We decided to try and use the C300 wholly within a scene if we decided it was the right camera for that scene. So if we used it, it wouldn’t be so much for intercutting with Alexa, but for sequences where it would be the only camera. That way, you’re not trying to match it to something. Setup director Gelndyn Ivin and I decided to try and use it sparingly. It did mean however, that we could simply give a camera to our second unit / surf director, and he often could shoot little sequences by himself, without having to wrangle an Alexa. That would have required him to have an operator and probably an assistant. The BMCC was used more and more towards the end of the shoot as the easy version didn’t even shoot 25 FPS. I haven’t done the same kind of “direct†testing, but so far, it intercuts with the Alexa footage really nicely. We’ve used it within Alexa shot scenes as a third camera. I’d often get my focus puller to operate it while I flew solo for hand held shots. More often than not the so called third camera bonus shot is getting used. jb

Bitrate when recording in ProResHQ: ProRes 422 HQ “target†data rates (VBR): 1080p24 @ 176 megabits/sec. 1080p25 @ 184 mbs. 1080p30 @ 220 mbs. June 28, 2012 John Brawley quotes: The ProRes is actually very good. If you shoot in “film†mode, then there seems to be little cost to the DR of the camera. I’m shooting all the time with it, but there are still some things to be resolved. I can’t say when exactly i’ll be able to show you footage, but it should be soon. It will be DNG and ProRes too.

The AVCHD codec is excellent. I played with some footage from a sony handicam (consumer video minature camera) and the video holds very good. I tried this about a year ago and was surprised. The footage looked quite amazing. With respect to the FS700, the footage has a certain look to it. I noticed some people are desaturating the image too much and getting a partial "dirty" look to the video (I'm no expert and I am guilty to doing this too at times). Alot of posted video does look videoish and has highlights blown too much (perhaps people only using the camera for brief time periods so not exposing images properly due to not being familiar with the camera?). No disrespect to the camera or others. I love what Sony is doing here. Some footage looks very good. It'll be interesting to see what people come up with once they have the official camera in hand. They'll have time to experiment with different picture profiles and will have proper time to experience the camera. From what I have seen from the limited BM footage, the useable dynamic range looks amazing. Brawley has stated the dynamic range is close to the Alexa. The color is supposed very close to the Alexa too. Still early to make a true assessment. Footage supposedly coming soon.

@BurnetRhoades Good stuff. Thanks for posting. @Yellow, Thanks for the links and for mentioning the YCbCr. Being an old fart, I forget things and you reminded me of a technique. @jcs, Thanks for your post too.

Still didn't order the BM - the last Canadian supplier offered me a "good" price however he has to find out on the deliever aspect. They have a good releation with BM so they may be able to squeeze one for me perhaps on the initial draw? To my surprise, no one order the camera from this supplier although lots of interest. If they can't get camera right away, and the back of the bus becomes reality, then plan B is another supplier who had their order in from day 1 and only 3 takers out of a possible 7. Again, no guarantees. If the reality becomes a September or October delivery then I'll wait as Kineraw and 1DC will be in the picture. I'm only rambling, but others may be thinking the same too. Below is a recent BM update. From the BM site: http://www.bmcuser.com/showthread.php?414-Talked-to-Dan-and-used-the-Camera-6-27-12 So in lowly Rancho Cordova, Sacramento CA, Blackmagic visited a film and meet gathering and I spent my time talking with Dan, holding, using and shooting on the BMCC and asking questions. I hope to share some nuggets of information, but most of it you all already know. About the Keynote: First, the presentation was really cool because they show the actual Leah footage from a "well known DSLR" and then from the BMCC. It actually includes her walking into the scene with the camera on a dolly following her through the room. One of our vendors had a super high resolution 4k+ projector doing the presentation, so the HD examples were totally vivid and sharp (and didn't fill the entire screen obviously). Let me tell you one thing: the footage comparison is completely AWESOME! The DSLR is pretty bright, windows are all blown out, walls are blown out, Leah has magenta cast and of-course, from line-skipping, is soft. However, the funny thing was, I didn't really notice that UNTIL I was shown the footage from our little friend. It is night and day different! The sharpness difference is well noticed even from 20 feet away, all the windows are exposed with the BMCC, Leah's face looks like flesh, the overall cast was a bit darker - but it was all ungraded (from both cameras). There is so much latitude. The DSLR footage looked like bright polished video whereas the BMCC looked right off a film set. Again, no color grading so it could be pushed in amazing ways. Out of maybe 50+ people there, many were very surprised. Again, the BMCC had such a different mood and film look to it that right then and there, I knew I was pleased with my pre-order. Dan said they hope to release samples next week to the world. Then the presentation showed stills in a subway, and different models' faces, all looked like really nice DSLR RAW images with more dynamic range. That is impressive! A note on Thunderbolt: it is not for monitoring or hooking up to a computer to transfer data through (unless using their data express? I missed some of that sorry) - but Thunderbolt is for scopes on your laptop. Dan said the number one request was 60p and they are discussing it but really their main emphasis right now is to ship in July and not frustrate people with a product that doesn't function properly or over-promise something. Obviously, RAW in 2.5 k and 60p is too much for SSD's to record properly, but doing something in 1080 with ProRes could happen *no guarantees* but this will all be discussed after launch. In his presentation, Dan was the one who said "now as you know, the sensor can record higher frame rates." Now, Dan said the product has a USB port and firmware upgrades will be something they WILL do. PS: Davinci 9 looks awesome and is redefined in the GUI for faster navigation and a much cleaner look. Version 8 users will have a free upgrade. About the Launch Date: Blackmagic has "thousands" of cameras on order from vendors. I asked, "hundreds of thousands?" No, but still, they a lot more then they could of dreamed about and are very excited about the buzz and so is Apple who have been very supportive of them (as you know, including a screen shot of the BMCC in their keynote). But they are also aware of the work involved to get things going and shipped. So, hundreds will be fulfilled in July, and the thousands filled by October into November. Basically, they will be working really hard to meet all these orders, it is all up to where you stand with the vendor and how much they decided to get in the first batch run. Hand On Impressions: The camera was fit with a Canon 24-105mm F4 L lens and the first thing I experienced was a breath of release seeing 24mm. It was surprisingly wide for the room (an office building). In fact, I was zooming on the lens to frame more, so my 16-35L lens is going to be great for me. I thought the lens was a 2.8, but online, I can only see F4, so that helps too because at 800 ISO (the native ISO), and wide open, everything was exposed fine, even stopped down. The room was not very bright, more dim - basically an office building with half of the lights on. Now this Camera was the NAB camera so not all the menu items were fully working. First, there is no f stop value displayed in the menu and it may not be displayed on the shipping model either (Dan had conflicting reports from the lead engineer), so you just use your arrow buttons to open or stop down. (That is why I was unsure of the lens' f stop). I told Dan this needs to be a firmware update ASAP but it is not a deal breaker once you see the image. I cranked it to 1600 ISO, stopped down the lens a bit, then put my face right against the 20" cinema monitor it was hooked up to and pixel peeped. Guys, noise is minimal and has a grain / RED nature to it (albeit without the grid-like-banding on the Red One *whew!*) I am very pleased. Then I did some whip pans. Rolling shutter is *definitely* better than the 5dmkII IMO. I'm not worried. The touch screen is fast and large and great resolution, I'm very happy. One thing I was already asking for though was a zoom in feature before recording like the DSLR's have because, unless you have an external monitor, I was still unsure of critical focus. Dan said that it certainly is something a firmware upgrade could do because hardware wise, no changes there would have to be made. I told them I wanted it! Take Away: I was never too worried about my pre-order on faith, never having touched the camera nor seen really many samples, but now, I am not worried in the least. I'm excited. The quality, DR, noise and sharpness are cinema in nature, the FOV was not as bad as I was thinking based on everyone's talk and worry. I'm going to have a go with my 16-35 L 2.8 and probably get a Samyang 24 1.4. I may not have the camera as soon as I want, shipping is going to be a little crazy, but we must have patience. Finally, the company is really cool. Their history is one of innovation and breaking down walls of impossibility -like creating their own camera. They will certainly deliver on future firmware updates and things will only continue to get better - which is simply cool

Prometheus, in my opinion was good but left me not fully satisfied. I can see MattH's point of view. Very nice cinematography. Could it have been better - yep! Character development, and possible switch in parts or casting characters could have been better. Out of the 4 of us who went to the movie it was a draw. 2 liked, 2 didn't. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 4 of us liked. It was a surprisingly fun ride. Avengers 4 of us liked. Men in Black 3 4 liked but 2 had reservations Snow White and the Huntsman Liked the first half of the movie then started to daydream. Snow White actress uninspiring. Sorry. 2 liked and 2 indifferent. Hunger Games Was worried about the initial dizzy camera shots at first. Came nicely together. 3 liked and 1 indifferent. Everyone has likes and dislikes. Not trying to mess with anyone with the above opinions. I like all sorts of movies. Fun to see if one can get lost into a different world for a few hours.
