Digic Register Testing: Looks like fun. Should I risk my Canon Mark 5d II for science? Magic Lantern - DIGIC register investigation Prediction: More fun stuff coming...

It'll be interesting if the Magic Lantern Team achieves uncompressed 1080p HDMI out. If not, it'll be interesting what the video specs of the new Mark 5d iii will be. For interest sake: The HDMI output from the Canon HDMI is limited to 1620x1080 (3:2) while the camera is not recording. This requires the user to crop the footage from the external recorder to 1620x910 (16:9) and then resize it to either 1280x720 (79%) or 1920x1080 (119%). When the camera is recording, HDMI output resolution is limited to only 720x480 (effective image resolution is 640x388, which represents a stretched 3:2 frame).

Let's hope the Magic Lantern People show up the camera companies in a huge way (they already have but...things may get alot more exciting...). Here's some info on sensor and picture image. Here is what Alex, the Magic Lantern "King", has recently stated: a1ex 23 minutes ago Looks like we are making progress in understanding how to reconfigure sensor scanning modes, image processing pipeline, output device and so on. No promises for now, just some hope. Hmmm, things could be heating up very nicely for the dslr people. "Reconfigure sensor scanning modes" - that sounds very interesting indeed!

Read further below. Speaking of DIGIC - I've found a few image filters in Canon's image processing pipeline; these can be enabled or disabled very easily. You can find 3 of them under Movie menu (those are grayscale recording, negative image, and something that looks like purple fringing). These functions which use DIGIC registers are found usually by trial and error (changing the values in these registers blindly and writing down what they do). There are thousands of registers (many of them unused), so analyzing all of them by brute force is a huge task. If you would like to help with this, let me know and I'll prepare a special autoexec.bin (you don't have to write any code, but you shouldn't be afraid of lockups, ERR70's and other similar things). The following functions were implemented by changing DIGIC registers: FPS override, Highlight++, display saturation, display position adjustment, custom color palettes, and today, image filters. Other possible functionality: clean HDMI out, moving the recorded box around in crop mode, custom curves applied to image, anamorphic preview... etc. The good news is that DIGIC commands are the same on all cameras. This can unlock many things that previously were thought to be impossible or very hard.

Kineraw update. http://nofilmschool.com/2012/02/latest-chinese-kineraw-digital-cinema-camera/#more-18208 Most people probably saw the S8 test footage. In case you didn't there is a couple links in the above article. Hook up your computer or laptop to your tv if you can then watch. The footage is pretty amazing. At first I thought it was good. But it is amazing. (Note: A few shots were not the best too)

More on the Magic Lantern front: This update brings the ability to record extra highlight data, just like with "dcraw -H1" (see first link). I didn't do any serious testing, but I think you can get around 1 stop of extra highlight detail. https://groups.google.com/group/ml-devel/browse_thread/thread/dea4ce5e18f9140f/51f752b5f2ec9535?show_docid=51f752b5f2ec9535

First impressions of the $2999 Nikon D800's video mode
FilmMan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The Nikon video was done professionally. It looks good - cinematic style. This makes the quality appear above average. But if you look at it carefully, you'll see what Andrew is pointing out. Is it ahead of the GH2 or the Canon Mark 5d ii? Doesn't look like it. Specs sound good, but the picture needs to support the specs. Does it really? Give it some time and see what comes out. With respect to Act of Valor...awesome. In case people have not seen the new trailer. http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/12/17/act-of-valor-trailer/ I have an old Dv5000 1/2 inch JVC. Looking at old video. Actually excellent picture and very accurate colors. The new JVC 4k camera may actually surprise many. We'll see in the next while. This year should bring alot of choices to the filmmaking community. PS. Some interesting stuff still happening with the Canon Mark 5d ii with hacks. -

Previous Magic Lantern Hack with 990% CBR. Was testing against houses siding and roofs, where moire could be a big issue. Holds very well. In post, I find the extra bitrates provide cleaner footage. Just my opinion. Now if you want to have even more fun, check this out, the new "hack" version. Driving Home - a Magic Lantern Test

For those who have the Canon 5d, here's some footage from a hacked 5d. Hacked 5d Note: Done quickly and added a few effects so not as boring.

Supposedly tomorrow is the day for the pricing announcement for the C300. We'll see if this is true. Canon is supposed to announce on Tuesday, the 17th, the pricing and dealers for the C300

4K for £4K and why you probably shouldn't get a JVC HMQ10
FilmMan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Don't forget that JVC will be putting out a "professional" 4k version with interchangeable lenses. -
Dan Hudgins seems to have an in? Maybe summer for release? There is quite abit of info below from Dan's video page. The video link is below. KineRAW-S8p (tm) lens test reel #A2 w/o links The response area below the video is detailed. Here's the Kineraw site: http://www.kineraw.com/index.html There was talk of the 2K model going for around $2000. And the 4k for $6000 to $8000? If these guys get there act together and can put together a good product with warranty, then...??? Regardless, it is good to see competition. By the way, I tried the 5d with faster bitrate and it is cleaner with less moire. Too bad the Magic Lantern people can't get 4:2:2 color space with a better codec (nevertheless, ML people have done a tremendous job). The Canon 5d is an amazing camera especially with the "right lens" on it.

KineRAW-S8p (tm) 2.5K lens test reel B1 This is the second lens test reel, you can see #A2 also on from my video page. I am testing various lenses for use in film-making projects using the Super8 format Digital Cinema Camera called the KineRAW-S8p (tm). This camera records fully uncompressed at various Ultra-HD resolutions, this video was shot at 2592x1104x12bit@24.000fps 103MB/s to high speed SSD in the camera. Ya gotta luv competition!
-
I wonder with the 4k JVC coming to the market and priced sub $5000 if Canon will lower their C300 from $16000 (supposedly that is the price now being touted). Also, JVC will eventually come out with their beefed up, interchangeable 4k camera too with a possible $10000 price. So Canon may have to do so adjustments before the competition forces their hands?
-
It gets more interesting with JVC. Competition is good to have. http://www.nextwavedv.com/jvc-hints-at-interchangeable-lens-version-of-their-4k-camera/
