Olympus 'beta tested' 4K firmware for E-M1, developing cine lenses
rak_heri replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Was the source working on Mad Max? These pics show camera ops using Canon 5D as well as Olympus EM1. I was wondering why they would use EM1 instead of GH4 but if indeed the 4K firmware exists, it makes much more sense! -
Excellent shots indeed. This is slightly irrelevant - I'm impressed by the resolution of this youtube video. It looks like real 1080p resolution, no image degradation or compression loss. I've uploaded a few Magic Lantern videos like this that have great color and resolution on my station but the encoded youtube video looks like 720p resolution or H264 compared to this. What codec or settings should you use to get this level of quality on youtube? Without sending a 4K file

the panasonic 20mm pancake would do everything you are looking for (street, astrophotography, portraits, etc.). Best lens for the money

5D mark III ML - is there any camera that matches the colors?
rak_heri replied to Jonas D'Hollander's topic in Cameras
5D Mk3 raw for documentaries doesn't make any sense. Storage will cost a fortune, plus other headaches Commercials, short films are perfect for 5D Mk3 raw though. A BMCC is a good compromise. You can shoot in Prores for documentaries (and you have audio), and you can shoot RAW for commercials. -
I don't get why there are 2 lists. In the pro audio quality list, there is the 1DC, Hero 3, GH2 etc. How are they different from 5D3 and others in the 2nd list?
-
Hi Maxime, with vimeo, it's possible to upload a new video file and it will replace the existing one. It's seamless for users who already have the url. For the audio files issue, you could go to your media library and then replace the source files there? Most editing software allow you to change a file to another one on your hard drive. I don't see why you should that in your timeline.

Pros also want, or shall I rewrite that, require the colors to be good out of the box. Nobody doesn't want to spend time searching for the right color in post-production. It's too easy to mess up and deliver a picture or a shot with the colors off. Out the 3 in the list, I would say then Canon 1DX has the top 1080p image

The Zeiss 24-70mm f4 OSS is available. How do you focus in low-light with the GH2?
-
I can get better images with a Canon 5D mark III in raw mode

Those ND filters will need to add a IR Cut filter otherwise there's a strong color cast.

I'm a bit lost. The big highlight of A7S was big large pixels (instead of 36MPx on Sony A7R). If DR is similar too GH4 which has finer pitch and also smaller sensor, what does the A7S has, apart from low ISO? Where are the 15+DR advertised?
-
Which one has the best dynamic range? In the comparison, it seems to assume both GH4 and A7S have same dynamic range.

4K for $899 with the Panasonic FZ1000 - but beware the quirks!
rak_heri replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'd get it for the 1080p 120fps. All other cameras do 720p or 96fps in 1080p for GH4 Good also to see a microphone input. It seems to lack a headphones output? The codec seems to break up with foliage? -
A new (and extraordinary) Sony A7S 4K low light test
rak_heri replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Is it really 15 stops of DR in video? I saw the dxomark tests which puts Sony A7R between 14 and 15 DR in photo but it doesn't mean that it will have 15 stops dynamic range. The APS-C Canons for example have 11 stops in stills but barely have 8 stops in video. -
I also do a lot of photography (portraits, studio, events) If you are planning to do short movies, art pieces and anything that involves long time commitment, the 5D Mark III would be great. It has the full frame image for photography, and you can push the image in post as much as you want for videos. For me, the problem is the post-production and the bugs. It will take time and careful organization to the point where you *hate* the experience. A world of difference with AVCHD, H264 or Prores. If you can wait a few weeks, I would see the reviews for Sony A7S. It doesn't do pixel binning, the sensor should be as good as Nikon D800, and the Zeiss ZE lenses are extraordinary; however nobody knows how moiré and rolling shutter will be (forget 4K...). Maybe the best of both worlds

I got a cheap one at $100 and used it for a few shots. When used well, the results are cool. Is it worth it? It's really gadget-y in my opinion. I am looking now to downsize my gear and hoping to replace all of those (jib, slider, etc.) by a 3-axis stagbilizer gimbal.
-
I can confirm that. I scratched the screen after shooting 3 times with it. Also with a cage it's less shaky. I got the Tilta cage (review here) if you are looking for a good one

Can you post a few screenshots of what you think is a film look?

Hands-on preview of the powerful 4K shooting Panasonic GH4!
rak_heri replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I just saw it's compatible with the GH3 battery grip good stuff :D That also means it will be compatible with GH3 batteries. No need to replace accessories. -
I recommend the GH3 (did a review). It's the perfect camera for event videography, with all the features you need. The Olympus prime 45mm f1.8 gives a very shallow depth of field, is very affordable, and one of the top 3 m43 lenses (also did a review) For the zoom in the 100-135mm, there's the 35-100mm Panasonic zoom, if you have the budget, or the Olympus 40-150mm, a great lens for its price. If you're really looking for a great lens though, I would get either the 75mm Olympus (a jewel) or the Olympus 60mm macro. Happy shooting !
-
@brianl a m43 Speedbooster is impossible. The idea is that you take a lens made for larger sensors (full-frame or APS-C) and make it work on a smaller sensor with a piece of glass that focuses the light on a smaller area Maybe you can do a special version of Speedbooster that will do the same thing for m43 lenses but on a m43 body (GH3, OMD M1 and others), the lens will heavily vignette
-
Hi Alessandro You should really consider getting the MFT version - options for wide / ultra wide are very limited with the EF mount version. For MFT, you can either get mft lenses or get EF lenses + Speed Booster
-
I would like to see where gopro is (it's used in many productions). Also isn't Red Monochrome a hyper-specialized tool? Like the high-speed Phantom camera.

I would start with the following : 2 Panasonic GH3 4 SD Cards Sony 32GB SDHC class 10 Memory cards 2 spare GH3 batteries Support: 1 Sachtler Ace Tripod for static GH3 1 Manfrotto monopod for mobile GH3 1 Slider 2 Switronix Bolt Led (+2 basic stands) Lenses: 1 Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Nikon mount + speedbooster (for static GH3) 1 Olympus 45mm f1.8 (for mobile GH3) Audio: 1 Rode videomic Pro + Boompole and Stereo 3.5mm extension cord so you can extend the RodeVideoMic Pro and put it closer 1 Sennheiser G3 wireless pack 1 Tascam DR-05 A Lowepro bag or Pelican case
