Thanks Maxotics Just downloaded it. So will this take raw files from say magic lantern and covert them to readable DNG files? Cant test it as I don't have any ML raw..... Yet... Possibly What my question was in regard to was the ACR denoising. I thought neat video was the best so Im keen to give adobe's version a go. The problem is I cant find it in After Effects?

The REAL difference between normal DSLR video and 5D Mark III raw video
markm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Andrew. Have you got some 5D3 raw DNG files we could test? Preferably some mid shots close ups of people exteriors and interiors. Dont worry if you don't. :) -
Can you use EF lenses with it?

Detailed Panasonic GH4 rumoured specs - 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K video
markm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Lets be honest 4k is overkill There is no real need for it and everyone here will deliver in HD at best. What it does do is sell more hard drives and more programs and there upgrades as well as obviously shed loads of cameras So many people who want to say mines bigger than yours will positively need this. All I phones now need to have 4k on a 2" screen because their users have borg enhanced visual implants to check for faulty pixels on the atomic/quantum level. This may be a good time to remind everyone... Content is king..... IE how many pixels you can get on an I PHONE. -
In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
markm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I have actually spent far more on lenses then I will do on a camera. The real problem for me is I am camera less. WHY? Because the way manufacturers do business is so frustrating with there 8 bit compressed 420 formula for their self made consumer market. Look at the Canon 1DC lovely camera then look at the price. Arrgh. I still don't get how Canon made a high bit rate codec for the Canon 5D3 that actually puts the lens out of focus. Argghh. After playing with the GH2 for a few years now and not being satisfied on working with it's shortcomings, IE 8bit 420 and having to light for exposure and get it right with limited colour correction I am well and truly fed up almost to the point of wanting my old EX1/ Letus adapter combo back. Arghhh. Arghhh. I am climbing the walls waiting for the BMD pocket camera and their 4k camera fiasco. Arghhh. So camera less and frustrated I have this need to constantly re evaluate other offerings but time and time again my mind locks my wallet as I face the crippledness of the main players err tools. Or are they the tools? Me? Noooooo. Arghhh. Nice though for you to guide me through this MEEESS by guiding me away from my tool petulance and into the world of don't worry be happy content is king, when I thought prince Charles was going to be king? Argghh. -

Detailed Panasonic GH4 rumoured specs - 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K video

Who asked for 4k? Mostly just a marketing thing. Actually what people have been angry about is the crippling of cameras and codecs that make sure you can never compete professionally. Would it be so HARD to put a 10 bit 4.2.2 clean hdmi out on a DSLR Black Magic did it at a great price so come on whats the excuse. Wont be long before there is triple triple crippled raw on iphones so people like you can tell us we don't need an alexa. -

I think the problem is getting the message through that an 8 bit 4.2.0 camera just cannot compete with 12 bit RAW and yet weirdly there are those who say not only that it can but that it is better. You either have to think those people are a bit thick or fanboys. The best you can say about it is that if you work with the image by exposing and lighting correctly you could end up with an end product that can look as good for the end user. But so many times now fanboy arguments muddy the water. -
Well they put a pseudo 10 bit on the af101 in the end so maybe they will on a camcorder I really don't think they will on a DSLR that would make them the first to do it and set a precedent. You would hope Panasonic would have learned from crippling the af101 It would have been a best seller if it only had 10 bit 4.2.2 out and decent resolution. I doubt BMD would have got a look in as most would have been satisfied with the panny and an offboard recorder. Funny really how they shoot themselves in the foot over and over by holding back technology. I can see a new marketing strategy going on in the board rooms. COMPANY EXECUTIVES We must all stick together. If we start competing it will force prices down. CHAIRMAN We all agree. They all say aye. CANONE EXEC The camera is getting old and we haven't sold many. CANONE BOSS Right plan B Secretly send the camera blueprint to magic lantern. CANONE EXEC It worked sales are up ten fold. And the pro's sales unaffected. Do you think the other manufacturers will think we stitched them up? CANONE BOSS Panatonic have Vitaliy. CANONE EXEC Won't Sone cotton on and get their own guru? CANONE BOSS Long as we don't let them hack the pro gear Sone will stick to crippling the low end. CANONE EXEC What about BMD? CANONE BOSS Easy take everything to 4k and cripple it. CANONE EXEC But BMD will get into 4K CANONE BOSS Have you see a BMC 4K camera? CANONE EXEC Heh heh.

In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3

So much confusion needs rules on what it is you are trying to define. 1) Absolute picture quality and ability to grade. That will be the Black magic and the canon raw. Cinema 2) Run n gun with a lower dynamic range and picture that needs little grading. TV/Internet use. 3) My option would be cinema use so the choice is narrowed to the BMPC or the Canon. The BMPC is more than half the price includes prores resolve DNG files and is not hacked. The canon is full frame (Nice)but hacked. Fairly obvious using a hacked camera carries risks that no professional would dare take. So for 13 stops 12 Bit RAW lossless compression and 10 bit 4.2.2 prores that is not hacked and resolve I think it is clear the Pocket is the camera that will give the best bangs for the buck if image is your priority. -
My guess is 8 bit 4.2.0 in a Panasonic codec priced about £2000 and all the same problems like 8 bit mini hdmi with monitor overlays and maybe no sound recorded on the hdmi out. Followed by a higher end video camera priced about £10 grand that's an af101 replacement with true 10 bit 4.2.2 out. I bet they're all expecting BMD to fail as they are more and more coming out of favour with film makers thanks to there complete disregard in communicating and quality control. I fear a return to the bad old days is on the cards. I hope not.

JG. Yes but maybe not. The 1DC is coming to the end of its life now as are all Canons 8 bit pro offerings so maybe this could be a good thing for them if ML did hack the camera. Whose to say ML are not helped by canon because as you say you bought the 5d3 because of the hack. Maybe Canons help could be by advising ML its okay to now hack the 1DX. Canon have made a lot of money over these hacks So did Panasonic over the GH2. Not only that but they manage to keep there pro division separate as no serious pro anyway would use a hacked camera and risk a shoot.
-
Just been reading up on it and I don't think ML would bother as they think those who can afford the 1dx could afford the 1dc that there would be few users and the threat Canon would sue. One difference cited are the 1dc has better heatsinks for 4k which compresses video at about 7.1 However the 1dx could be hacked to do uncompressed raw Although would anyone be able to afford the cf cards with a 128gb card lasting 7mins and costing £500. I guess you need the compression and that could be tricky for ML that could also lead to overheating issues.

That would be really cool if magic lantern could hack the 1D X and make a 1D C

In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
markm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Pretty easy one for me. The Pocket camera wins hands down with prores 10 bit 4.2.2 Canon raw is to many steps and for my money what comes out of the camera is not as good as the pocket pro res. The GH3 just plain has zero chance with 8 bit Thanks for the test Andrew it confirms what is fairly obvious to me. The only problem I have with the pocket is users are reporting perhaps all the cameras have hot pixels. The camera I would love to own is the canon 1dc But then with the BMD 4k on the ever moving horizon the £8600 price tag the price of a car for a DSLR is a canon step to far removed from reality. -
The G6 has no HDMI out only for playback. Also a low bitrate compared to the GH3 or hacked GH2.

Surprise! New Sony RX10 sensor has 5K full pixel readout
markm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The ninja records 10 bits or 8 bits in a 10 bit wrapper Maybe you meant convergent designs nanoflash However 8 bit was never useless but it is better as a finalising format and not for colour correction or capture. Although Canons C log on their 1DC looks amazing the problem is it costs £8500 but the game has moved on and it could have moved on much earlier but the manufacturers chose to cripple the cameras. I don't agree demand determines supply Heh heh The demand is high for the BMPC but sadly few are getting made. Okay joking but that does highlight the point that demand is high for the cameras BMD make and yet none of the main manufacturers are satisfying that demand because it would ruin their pro markets and £15000 cameras. Marketing does create demand and the way things are going in a very cynical way. http://www.moviemachine.tv/video/comments-on-4k-philip-hodgetts/77230136/
