  1. I know how they compare but my point was that a built-in ND would had been very handy for video. I know it's part of the tech world but I just wouldn't like to buy the LX100, just to find out next year that it wasn't so much of a technical issue and that the new model is basically the same camera but now with built-in ND filter and a tiltable screen. I would prefer that Panasonic tries to prolong the LX100 just like Fuji and then, two or three years from now they could present a LX100 sucessor with an organic sensor or something instead of minor updates every year like Sony does with the RX100 - they could had skipped the RX100 II, for instance. But I do understand that they might just do like Sony, to use the old model as a baseline and then launch a new model with some new stuff and charge more for it while keeping the old model. Anyway, my point was just trying to understand the reason behind the omission of these feats that would help video.
  2. The only way to really know more about rolling shutter is if he had pushed it a little further but in theory it should be around the same as the GH4, I don't think it will be better than the GH4. As for the 4K crop it's 26 - 81mm. It should have the Cinelike profiles just like the FZ1000 has. The mic should not be very good just like any built-in mic.
  3. How much do you think you might miss a touchscreen or a tiltable screen? You probably will but anyway, I hope you can cover ND filter solutions (from fixed ND filters to variable, step-up adapters, etc) for the LX100 because I think that most people using this for video will probably need one. I wish someone could ask Panasonic if the ND filter omission was due to technical reasons or not. I think that tiltable screen and touch screen was probably to keep the price down, I wouldn't have minded a $999 price tag to have built-in ND filter, touch screen and tiltable screen but I do understand that a lot of people wouldn't need or like that extra $100 just for that. But as the 4K and some other video feats are part of the highlight of the camera and as the LX7 had ND filter, I kind of expected it to have, it would had made a lot of sense. A bit disappointed but no deal breaker, looking forward for more reports on this camera.
  4. You got it right! At the time, I started writing a post explaining what I really meant and then I decided to not post it because it looked like this would go nowhere, it felt like he was trying to convince me of something that had nothing to do with my point anyway. I know how adaptable mirrorless cameras are! My whole point was not how you can adapt it to E-mount or NX-mount, or even the bulkiness*, that was just an observation, how you can use this or that lens, etc. I was simply pointing out that many might not know but Samsung offers better sorted lens line up support for this segment than Sony - read high-end APS-C mirrorless cameras - and then I showed the lens line up to to back up what I was saying. *bulkiness is not just about size and weight, it's a lot about ergonomics and balance and A7's body are not made for that, no wonder Sony has admitted that this is the reason why they are not yet exploring constant f/2.8 instead of the constant f/4 lenses. So yes, I was talking about native lenses, not 3rd party not with adapters, none of that. I was not even counting the FE lenses because those were made thinking about FF users, not APS-C users, they are bigger and heavier than a APS-C user would need. The true is that Sony decided to not support APS-C users and moved on to FF E-mount users - not even A-mount FF users are getting any love. So, if Samsung is aggressive enough in this market, they might get some users, which is better than nothing since Samsung is quite late in actually making a splash between mirrorless cameras. And I like how Sony has been aggressive for the FF E-mount users because they know how essencial it's for their success. Not just because they need more lenses to attract Canikon users but because once more competitors arrive, having lenses will be key. Pentax/Ricoh is said to be developing a FF camera, that part seems to be official, they didn't mention but I think it's likely to be a FF mirrorless camera.
  5. I know that a 4/3 sensor is bigger than the 1" used by Sony on the RX100, but if the RX100 is proportionally smaller and it can do slow motion, I would think that having slow motion should be possible on the LX100. And otherwise you could simply allow it by a limited time, which is very ok for that purpose, you wouldn't shoot long footages for slow motion anyway. So, maybe, if Pansonic feel like it, they could allow it via firmware update.
  6. I found those but I was looking for variable ND as it's more practical and I could only find bigger threads or lower quality ND. But I still want to know if that cap accessory allows you to use a filter or not.
  7. Yeah, I looked for that right after I posted it was just that the USA page didn't have any info about the LX100, only the interviews, so I looked up in the Australian page. I was a bit disappointed because I expected at least GH3's codec for FHD.
  8. I can't quite agree that the Apple's Watch is that impressive but this LX100 certainly is. LOL. I do get some of the reasons of why Panasonic chose not to, but I'm disappointed in not having built-in ND filter like the LX7 had and like the LX100's competitors have. The camera has a 43mm filter thread though, I did a quick research and it doesn't appear to exist a lot of good quality ND for that filter thread, so it would need an adapter. This makes me wonder if even at 43mm, can you use that auto-cap accessory with the camera? I also wished it had at least a tiltable screen or a mic input, but I guess they don't want this camera to get into GH4's territory. I get it not having mic input since this is already quite a feat for its size and neither the RX100 has it. But the tiltable screen is less excusable since the RX100 didn't have one but the next two generations have and there is little to no bulk added. So Panasonic could had added that without compromising the size and compactness of the camera and that would be quite handy for video. Despite all that, it it performs as it should I will probably buy one but it makes less sense to use video and 4K as a selling point and not give the proper support for it. I also hope that just like they did with the FZ1000, they can add some new feat, including more framerates. The good, it's really a great camera. Faster than I would think it would be before the rumors, with a bigger sensor, packed with feats. Differently from Sony's zoom lens in the RX100 - all of them - Panasonic's lens design does not lose the aperture as fast while you zoom in, the curve is more gradual. The most surprising part is the dials layout borrowed from recent Fuji X cameras, I always wished more manufacturers would use that, for me it's so much more intuitive and quicker. It seems like the UHD will come from the 3840x2160 portion of the sensor but the 1080p output might come from a higher resolution of 4480 x 2520 since it would have less crop. I don't know, I wonder what the options are going to be like. How will the 10.9-34mm behave like in the UHD crop? Something like 28-90mm?
  9. Yeah, if it's just specs the article could be updated including the Samsung NX-1 as well.
  10. I loved the design, it's like the GM1 in the form of a phone but with a more modern angled edges, Panasonic has been nailing lately.
  11. You are debating whether it will be better than the 24MP or not and that's not what I'm talking about. Anyway, this is showing to be an unproductive discussion so I'll stop here.
  12. What quantity of lens has to do with it? And no, there is no point in counting A-mount lenses and its extra bulk, it's about native lenses. I said better sorted, which means that they offer more focal length options. First, the E-mount has no f/2.8 constant zoom. Between the bright primes, the longer focal length for E-mount is 50mm f/1.8. There is a big intersection of lenses in very close focal length. Quick comparison: Samsung has the 16-50 f/2-2.8 and 50-150 f/2.8 zoom lenses and Sony's best offer is a f/4. What about primes? Samsung: 16mm f/2.4, 20mm f/2.8, 30mm f/2, 45mm f/1.8, 60mm f/2.8 macro, 85mm f/1.4 Sony: 16mm f/2.8, 20mm f/2.8, 30mm f/3.5 macro, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 This is what I said about better sorted, Sony has 4 lenses that fit between 16mm and 35mm, four lenses! And not a single one after 50mm. What about quantity? Sony has tons of zoom lenses, tons, they even have a version II of one of them despite not have an f/2.8 constant zoom or new primes for these E-mount APS-C cameras. So that's why I said that few people know but the NX mount has better sortes lens line up than the E-mount line up.
  13. Fly-by-wire can work ok if done properly, we'll see what side Samsung's MF is, actually, anyone that tested NX lenses can talk about it, but I have no idea about it. I didn't think that the improvement from the RX100 to the RX100II was so marginal and I wouldn't say that 40% improvement in sensitivity is marginal as well, In that sense the difference between 24MP and 28MP is much more marginal. Actually, if you apply just the percentages here, the 28MP has slightly smaller pixels but if it has more sensitivity, it can, in theory, outperform a 24MP sensor. But anyway, those numbers are from Sony's BSI, not ISOCELL, in theory, there is an even greater improvement there, so again, it will all depend on how much of the things on paper translate into reality but it's not unlikely at all.
  14. Why? I don't know the ISOCELL's tech - which is supposedly an evolution of the usual BSI - but BSI can give 25~40% boost in ISO performance over one without. There is quite a difference between the RX100 and RX100II/III. This should be plenty to think that it may not happen but I wouldn't say unlikely to outperform 24MP sensors. I think it's more concerning how is the MF for video than the AF for video, I would worry more about AF for stills and in darker situations. For instance, from the ones I had and tested, Sony's fly-by-wire MF is simply horrible. And in the end Samsung is really a copycat! LOL. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm just saying that they do make similar stuff to others manufacturers.
  15. That's not necessary bad, the GH4 does 4K in 4:2:0 8-bit as well. If Samsung is smart enough, they will make R&D and find a way to deliver better qaulity via firmware, they are already behind, they don't have the luxury to wait the next gen to do it right. For such forgotten mount, it's basically do or die, plus, they don't have a video/cinema line up to pretect, they better go all-in. Panasonic's attitude seems to be the best right now, they have been pretty aggressive, delivering great products with some aggresive pricing (FZ1000 and soon, the LX100). That because Panasonic could worry about the FZ1000's 4K hurting some other camera or their own's sales and that's even more true for the LX100, but no, they are going for the throat with these, if Samsung doens't top or equal Panasonic's posture, there is not that much space on the market for half-assed when you are coming from behind*. *LOL
  16. I've to say, I'm quite impressed by the specs, maybe Samsung's delivery is finally catching up with their bold claims. I didn't like the display side of the shoulder's design, it's falling and it doesn't seem to follow the curves. But I did like the overall curves of the camera, they work much better than Sony's attempt with their A-mount cameras. The HEVC (H.265) codec is an EFF huge step, but codec is far from being everything, previous generations ILC all had AVCHD and nonetheless, there were also quite differences in implementantion. So HOW you encode, the pipeline used for that, how much quality you are able to extract from all those 28MP, full readout sensor, rolling shutter, etc. These things are really the key. The codec only says that it allows you to get a great quality with a small file if you do it properly. Giving that Samsung doesn't have to hold back since they don't have a video/cinema line up to worry, this can be very interesting. But if the 8-bit HDMI output is any indication, Samsung should still be some steps behind Panasonic, but as hope, I hope for the best, the more competition, the best. Everybody got surprised when Sony first managed to use their BSI tech in a 1" sensor, but Samsung is using their ISOCELL tech in this APS-C sensor. There was said at the time that there are not that many benefits of a BSI tech for bigger sensors, but I'm not sure how much of tha was simply an excuse or maybe the cost was not worth or something, anyway, that was about Sony's tech. Samsung ISOCELL is also BSI but the tech is different from Sony's, so it will be interesting to see if the max of 51200 ISO is just for show or for real. I also liked the 15fps but what about AF performance? On paper it looks great, 205 of PDAF and 209 CDAF, but on paper, so many do, I'll wait for the tests. Most people don't know but Samsung does have a better sorted lens line up than Sony's E-mount, so they can explore the hole left by Sony in that segment. As I've said before, it's a little too late for me to go Samsung now, but I'm excited that they are finally fulfilling those empty bold claims of the past, I'm looking forward to see how they catch up from here.
  17. Latest rumors say that the upcoming LX100 will be around that same price! It will share the same sensor as the GH4 but with a bit of crop for the 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 lens (24-75mm FF equivalent). This camera won't have the reach of the FZ1000, of course, but it should be as good as the GH4 in terms of video quality - but with some time limitation for video due to heat issue -, and it still has a good enough reach and a pretty good aperture. If you asked how did Panasonic manage to put that lens on the FZ1000 - while Nikon asks much more just for the les - and still charge $899, I wonder how did they do with this 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 on the LX100 and - if rumors are correct - also charge the same as the FZ1000. Panasonic has been pretty aggressive, I'm looking forward for more details on the announcement day. I'm excited for all the recent development for videographers, more options - and better options.
  18. It's written: Effective Picture Elements 17:9 4096x2160 16:9 3840x2160 But it doesn't mention 4096 anywhere else, does it have Cinema 4K or just UHD?
  19. But what the "source" said makes sense. The E-M1's life's cycle should be at least 2 years, if not more, so there won't be any successor anytime soon. For what is worth the E-M5 still doesn't have a successor - but it may not have it at all. So, if there is any financial issue and taking Olympus' recent history into consideration it's very plausible, updating the firmware with a major feat would indeed increase the sales - possibly very drastically - and put Olympus on the map for videographers - if done properly, of course - the only cost would be in R&D of the firmware, codec, etc, with no cost on the hardware side, which includes R&D of the hardware as much as to manufacture it. So, from the logical stand point, the pieces fit, but will they really do it? That's really a different story and until they actually make it official, you never know. But if pre-announcements leaks are usually more accurate, I would give it more than 50/50 chances to happen.
  20. I'm also interested in the LX100. It's rumored to have the same GH4's innards, but it will already come cropped by 2.2x - just like GH4's 4K - and as such the sensor will act as a multi-aspect ratio sensor, not a full 4/3 sensor, it will have a 10.9-34mm f1.7-2.8 (24-75mm FF equivalent), it will come with EVF, 4K and some other stuff. The size is rumored to be about the same as the EOS-M, something between the RX100 and the G1X MKII, which is ok for me. I would rather have more functions and controls than just a pocketable camera. The RX100 as well as the LX7 have built-in ND filter, so I hope it does as well. I wonder if this camera will be limited like the FZ1000 in terms of 4K framerates and funcionality or will it have GH4's full capabilities. If it's the later, it better come with a mic input, if not, why make this such a compact video wonder without that? Just like this supposed E-M1 firmware, due to heat issues, this camera will have a time limitation when recording video. I wonder then, what kind of IS this camera will have, IBIS to keep the lens' size down? OIS to have a better heat dissipation? Or a hybrid like some others Panasonic's to get the best IS possible? Will this come with a tiltable, swivel or fixed screen? It seems that it may come with a fixed screen but I wonder why. And no word if it's weather sealed, much less how much will this cost. One of 43rumors's sources replied my comment by saying that he thought that price was fair, but that doesn't really say much. My 2 cents is that this will be $999 and if you think about it, if it comes with all framerates, if it has a good glass, EVF, ND, etc. they could even charge more. But I'm counting on Panasonic being aggressive against Sony, just like they did with the FZ1000, so who knows, maybe even $899? I think I would pay up to $1200 or something and that, if it does come with same GH4's 4K stuff, ND filter, tiltable screen, weather sealed, etc. If not, it would make me have second thoughts about it. So, this will also wait until September 15th, that's going to be an exciting day, huh?
  21. Any word on how does it compare to the GH4's 4K, IQ, if also has the same pipeline of encoding, if it also has a 2.2xcrop? If this firmware is real and it's coming, this will be huge because ultimately it means IBIS in 4K! I wonder how Panasonic will react to it or if there was some kind of deal behind this.
  22. If you'll need a camera when rolling shutter might be a problem, I think you better off with the GH4 then. If you need APS-C crop with Speed Booster to reduce it, unless you really, really need FF, a GH4 with Speed Booster will be more practical. Even more if you account that the 4K in APS-C can't be 4K and that if you'll need an external recorder anyway, GH4 can do 10-bit 422 instead of 8-bit. I'm interested to see if the upcoming LX8 will have a 12MP 1" sensor, sure, this is not even Micro4/3, but it will be a great video camera. It's rumored to have 4K and most of GH4's stuff - just like the FZ1000 -, plus, it will have ND filter and as rumors say it won't feat the same 20MP from the FZ1000, a 12MP 1:1 pixel in 4K, full readout in a lower count MP - and smaller - sensor should do wonders for video quality. The 24-90mm f/2-2.8 and EVF are not bad either. I can see Panasonic going less MP in a proper camera with Micro4/3 mount like a AF100 successor - if that will ever exist -, but I just don't see Panasonic going 12MP in a GH camera, the GH4 is sold as a hybrid camera and it's one great still camera, the video gets most of the attention, but it got praised a lot by its still capabilities as well, even more for the quick AF even in low light situations. So I don't think they would lower their MP from 16MP to 12MP.
  23. Well, this is definitely a way of warning people that they should really avoid rolling shutter situations with the A7s. It's a very challenging situation, no IS, handheld, etc. but there are times that it looks pretty awful and this is 1080p, and one could expect to get even wobbler at 4K. But the fact that the A7s is a low light monster remains, now it's just a matter of whoever uses it, to know its strengths and flaws and adapt their shooting style to get the most of it. I'm looking forward to comparisons between GH4's 10-bit 422 and A7s' 8-bit 422 and it wouldn't make sense just a normal boring comparison, I hope someone pushes the color grading to see how much each footage can handle without falling apart, showing color banding, etc. The Panasonic FZ1000 seems more to pay to its FZ Super Zoom heritage than actually being aimed at video like the RX10, but the LX8 is rumored to have a different sensor - possibly a lower count MP more 4K-friendly 1" sensor? - ND filter and possibly weather sealing. It could also have the same 1080p codec as the GH3's 50mbps IPB to match the RX100 MKIII' XAVC-S 50mbps. Anyway, I'm happy to see both Sony and Panasonic pushing video feats like that.
  24. I think that had they launched the general first, some people would had bought it just to realize later that there would be a specific version for their BMPCC or possibly the GH4 version. Then, they would have to sell it to buy the other version, launching the specfic version first you avoid that kind of mistake and nonetheless they won't arrive too long apart.
  25. Last time I speculated that all Andrew's hints were all leading to an active mount EF Metabones Speed Booster to come and it's here! It would be nice if Metabones could make a kind of niche GH4 special version for that 2.3x 4K crop but will they make both normal Micro4/3 AND GH4? It will be interesting to see what they will come up with. Too bad the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 doesn't have IS, what a nice combo it would be.
