4K for $899 with the Panasonic FZ1000 - but beware the quirks!
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's probably based on the Sony 20MP sensor, Panasonic also claimed the MOS tech on the GH3 but it turned out that it was the E-M5 Sony sensor after all, this one seems to follow the same pattern. Panasonic may had tweaked it a bit and named it as theirs, but for the most part, the performace should be very similar to the RX100/RX10. As for vÃdeo, AF, rolling shutter, etc. it will depend more on the Venus Engine, it will be interesting to see the difference and comparisons between the FZ1000, LX8, RX10, RX100 and AX100. -
4K for $899 with the Panasonic FZ1000 - but beware the quirks!

I think nobody mentioned it but this camera can also do 720p @240fps - and 640x480 @360fps. So this turns the camera even more interesting, 240fps in 720p is not bad at all. -
How to cure banding in DSLR footage (and GH4 4K holds the key...)
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Just for fun, let's speculate. But for what it was said - I may be wrong but that's why it's speculation - the clues seem very straight forward and they lead us to believe that soon enough there will be a Micro4/3 Metabones Speed Booster with electronic connectors for Canon's glass. Super35-like image, OIS, electronic controls AND 1-stop more of light on a GH4/BMPCC. Pretty nice indeed and this way the 5-axis IBIS will not be missed that much. -
I want a GH4 but unfortunately I don't really need one now so it's not really a priority. I saw a post saying that Panasonic is rethinking the GX line. The GH4 is safe with all the unique feats such as 4K, 200k shots shutter cyble, 12fps, etc. A GX8 would kill if it had GH3's 50mbps IPB and the IBIS working in video mode. It would be great for both stills and FHD video, it would have the IBIS for lenses with adapter, it would be smaller than the GH line up, it would not have the articulated screen but it would have a great balance between size, stills and video feats. This way Panasonic could even dump the G line up and/or refocus the GF line up. Anyway, Panasonic will not be able to keep GH, G, GX, GF and GM, way too many camera line ups, the GF loses value every day after it's launched, packing some video feats into a GX would be a nice - and awesome - solution for many people.

After only external 4K recording if the rolling shutter stay this bad that will be another let down, new rumors points out a different price than rumored before. Actually it points to the price range I thought it would be, something near D800, 5D range, double of the GH4, if that is confirmed as well, for those that actually believed that it would cost the same as the GH4 will be even more disappointed.

I have a couple of practical questions: - What will grade better? Andrew already said that the 4K file holds pretty good when grading, so is it better to convert it right away and then grade it? Or to grade in 4K, render and convert it to 2K using this app - supposing this app is not exclusive to the GH4? - Will using the 10-bit 4:2:2 to convert it get what? Closer to 10-bit 4:4:4 or just something else? How much better will it hold for grading?
-
Well, until out of camera files starts to circulate it's just speculation over a Youtube clip but it should be great indeed. The let down as a camera is that I expect low fps in burst because it seems to have the same A7/R form factor which doesn't allow a proper shutter on it - unless they solved it - and the form factor is probably the reason it doesn't do 4K internally, which the lack of room for it, this camera would catch fire with the overheat or only record short clips.
-
If it's the same form factor as the A7/R and they had problems to fit a proper shutter in it, does it mean that the rumor about high fps burst was wrong or is it a different type of body? The press release doesn't say anything about it. They using the same form factor should explain why it can't do 4K internally, overheating problems I guess. One thing is to output it without processing it, another is to keep the sensor up and processing all the 4K data and encoding it. So Sony opted for a smaller body instead of doing 4K internally and aiming towards a higher crowd that is willing do 4K externally. The 12MP was a step forward, keeping a smaller formfactor just for the sake of size sacrificing internal 4K was a step back. They are not wrong because they are aiming higher, but maybe it looked too optimistic for thinking that Sony could do it for consumers.

Sony A7S and 4K Sony NAB announcement - live EOSHD text commentary
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
There is always a catch and some guy in the other post got mad that people thought there could be one and that becase he was comparing the FS line up against the Alpha cameras, which are far from being the same thing and very likely to be made by two separated teams. But that's not totally a bad thing because they are making so this may be great 4K camera for those willing to pay, and it's clearly aimed more at professionals that will use it with a full rig for 4K. And it's very likely that the 1080p will beat the 5DMKIII in both low light and IQ, which is the camera I thought was aiming more than the GH4. But as there is no price yet, I don't know, but my bet was that this would be near the 5D price, double the GH4. -
Full frame Sony A7S with 1.1x sensor crop in 4K mode and XAVC-S codec
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
With Sony it's always a wishful thinking. But if you think that they chose a 12MP instead of what they would normally do, that something that can make us wonder what's gonna be this time, will take the next step or step back? I have no expectations. LOL. -

You should not mind but this is the Internet, the land of overreactors. They don't really mean a thing anyway. -
Sony A7S 4K full frame mirrorless camera announced Sunday at NAB?
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's a 12MP FF and it will do 4K in 1:1 pixel. That's quite a surprise, Sony going with what actually makes sense instead of going for the big numbers and ending up crippling the camera. I wonder if it's April Fool's Day again! LOL. If Sony is really thinking about KO'in the 5D, it will have similar price, but it gives me a feeling like it's going to be more. -
Sony A7S 4K full frame mirrorless camera announced Sunday at NAB?
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I don't think Sony is aiming at the GH4, they didn't even know about the GH4 when they started developing this A7S, for me, they are aiming at the 5D as the FF stills camera for video and as such it will probably match its price. I have my doubts when it comes to Sony actually delivering the best they can, they usually don't, just like they did with the A7 and A7R and I don't know how much it will affect the GH4, how is Sony going to turn a higher pixel sensor into 4K, Sony is probably going for something higher than 16MP in this FF camera. A full readout of a bigger sensor with more pixels would need more processing power, can it really match the GH4's video quality? Will Sony use their best codec in it? It will probably have a bigger form factor because the A7/R barely had enough space to have a proper shutter and therefore they don't have 10fps like many other Sony's cameras and it's loud. For the money I hardly think Sony can match a GH4+Speed Booster combo but it will certainly have its appeal and it will sell well if it has at least a decent video. But I'm more interested in knowing how it's going to affect the 5D. -
Surprise! Sony Alpha A6000 video mode huge improvement
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I would really want to see more about that as other E-Mount focus hunting and transition AF during video is simply unusable. -
It's not so much about the age as it's about how you turn all those pixels into video and Panasonic knows how to do that brilliantly. The full readout, double the speed because of 4K to avoid rolling shutter, the 4:2:0 coming AFTER the 4:2:2, these are little things that increase the IQ dramatically it seems.

Surprise! Sony Alpha A6000 video mode huge improvement
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If Sony wasn't so afraid that a possible A7000 would mess up with their A7's sales and market, we could have expected a a higher end one with mic and headphone inputs and that would had been great. I'm also curious about the GX7 vs A6000 tests in terms of IQ, overall operation but also AF in video. How does it compare to the GM1 in terms of video quality? That should give us about where the GX7 stands against the A6000. -
Surprise! Sony Alpha A6000 video mode huge improvement
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I really wanted to know more about the AF in video, some other "NEX" would hunt a lot or focus on the background when you want it to focus on the subject that is in the eff CENTER of the frame. And more importantly if touch focus works well, with no hunting from one point to another, that would be great. Maybe some tests paired up with some fast primes like the 35mm or 50mm or the zoom made for video like the 18-105mm G with power zoom. As there is no IBIS it's harder to handheld it in longer focal length with legacy lenses so I think that native lens OSS will be important. Unfortunately people should not expect Sony to give the consumers the extra customization of the button via firmware, so far it has not been Sony's mantra. -
Beautiful 4K Blackmagic Production Camera footage from James Miller
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I think that only in a few specific situations the global shutter will matter that much, even more considering that the full readout should also help provide some improvements for the GH4. For once, if you use OIS, handheld should not be a problem. The main situation in which the global shutter will really matter is fast motion, pans, etc. In those more extreme tests for the rolling shutter it will show whereas the BPC will have none. But I agree, they do have very different purposes. -

Maybe it's just the grading but maybe that extra stop of DR could have delivered more details, even more in the shadows, it looks cinematic but it ended up a bit too contrasty for me. -
About the YAGH: Is there some gain by using this 10-bit 4:2:2 to generate the 1080p 10-bit 4:4:4 instead of the internal codec from the camera (4K 8-bit 4:2:0)? Or is the difference just marginal? It's getting very video-nerdy but it would be interesting to see all the tests for all these scenarios. - 1080p (10-bit 4:4:4) from 4K (10-bit 4:2:2 via YAGH HDMI) - 1080p (10-bit 4:4:4) from 4K (8-bit 4:2:0 Internal codec) - 1080p (10-bit 4:2:2 microHDMI) - 1080p (8-bit 4:2:0 Internal codec All-I @200mbps or IPB @100bps) It may look like too much but I think it's interesting to know the degree of difference between these options, so people can choose the best workflow for their need.
-
So I finally got the answer! I asked this twice without much success but I didn't know it would get so technical and the result is quite above what I thought it was possible. In the end, 4K to 1080p in post is the way to go for better results. My question was: I don't know if the differences will gonna be big but 1080p (10-bit 4:4:4) from 4K footage should be the best, followed by ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2 and I think that as both are 8-bit 4:2:0 and I think Panasonic's codec should be good, the differences between the crop and the direct from the camera output should depend on the subject, conditions and what do you want to do with it. The 4K cropped will have heavier compression but I don't know if the differences are going to be that noticiable. Actually, unless you make the whole testing in different scenarios and light situations, we can only speculate if the differences in terms of final results are considerable enough to each person and workflow. Depending on your use, it may not be worth going through all of that. But the big news is that you won't need an external recorder to extract the maximum of a 1080p footage, you just need to shoot in 4K and have more time and a better computer - than you would if you were going to work on just 1080p. This simply makes the GH4 even more awesome in terms of cost-benefit and flexibility.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4K price drops to $3k and ships
theSUBVERSIVE replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Wow, BlackMagic is bold as always, they really shake things up! Oh, if Canikon - but mainly Canon - had just 10% of their innnovative philosophy... This makes me wonder what can BlackMagic achieve if they were to charge a bit more, a $5K or even a slightly sub-$10K camera. Improved DR, better low light, cinema aspect ratio, etc.? I know that they were initially trying to capitalize on a different market than those $10K+ cameras and they don't really need to go that far, but by what they offer, they can really suck in people that were going for those cameras PLUS the 5DMKIII, AF100, FS700 market as well. I bet that Panasonic wouldn't push the GH4 like they did if it wasn't for BlackMagic, I really like what they are doing with the video oriented market for enthusiasts/produmers and even pros. -
