EOSHD at DPReview - final summary of 5D Mark III's video abilities
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
@popalock: i think Nikon now has finally stepped up to the plate and as @gene said, it has won this round. The d800 has been sold out everywhere. They did it right with pricepoint (which Canon will never concede) and specs. And they now have decent video. If the rumored d600 comes out (budget FF), they will have gained or taken over from budget to 'Semi-Pro' range. As a Landscaper, the 14-24 is worth the jump to Nikon. But i am happy with the MkII/24L results. The Nikon menu system feels very foreign to me. Well, Sony too. It would take readjustment. Thats my concern. -
EOSHD at DPReview - final summary of 5D Mark III's video abilities
If Canon advertises the Mark III as 1080p and it is closer to 720p, what else should they expect from end users! I own a MarkII, I really like the cam yet it too is closer to 720p than 1080. Get it right Canon, you have a wonderful cam thats shoots closer to 720P not 1080! Andrew, I like and appreciate your work and your blog. You are an advocate for independent creators. You celebrate the good and protest the bad, I couldn't ask for anything more.
+1. Its great to hear the full details or all the pros and cons. We need to know all limitations if there are any before spending money. There has been alot of positives on the FS100 and d800 then just the GH2. If something sucks or is a mixed-bag, we need to know about it and its great to get an education as well. -
Nikon D3200 and Samsung NX20 - hands on with two new budget video DSLRs
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras

I really like the idea of the anamorphic cinemascope mode! I hope this is something we'll see in all future dSLRs.
If my logic skills don't deceive me there is no anamorphic wizardry. There is a simple crop. One you could also - and better! - perform by dragging a 1920 x 1080 clip into a 1920 x 803 desktop sequence (not cinemascope, but the modern scope, this AR is a common preset in digital cinema processors). Correct me.
I hope there is more to it then that but they should call it 'Anamorphic Crop Mode' if so. :D I would like to get into Anamorphic some day. -
Thanks for the kind words eosjames! Mountain View eh? That would have been 3-years ago now for the NorCal chapter of the digital cinema society. I was there showing how cool the GH1 was back in the day. I had at least a dozen people told me after that screening that the GH1 blew the doors off the (30p) 5D footage that was shown.
Yup, that was it. TransVideo studios. Biggest studio in BayArea. Yeah, you were showing your adapters with the cinema lenses. I didn't even know about the MkII/GH1 then. Hard to believe its been 3 years.
-
@Illya: Thanks for the great summary. Its nice to know about the 15% qualitative difference and that you confirmed the GH2 results. I met you one time at a meeting in Mountain View at a nice Studio. Canon was there as well. That was literally the first day i wanted to buy a dSLR and go forward in filmmaking.

As much as i like the BD, i would get the FS700 cause its 4K. Guessing by NAB2013, BD will have their 2nd cam which will be 4K. I would get that one instead of FS700.

Advance press screenings of 48fps The Hobbit 'disappoint'
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's just a question of people getting used to it. 3D 48p is a different look, it's literally more lifelike and the real world doesn't move at 24p in 2D. I have a 3D DLP HD projector at home and sometimes watch films with the projector interpolating frames into the image to become a faux 3D 48p or 60p, and yes it is different, no doubt, but is it worse? Not at all! In fact films look amazing in terms of the detail and the clarity. I watch Tron or Avatar this way and it looks just seems so life-like, but it's a more of an artificial reality that plays out in front of you than traditional 2D 24p cinema so some people will find that sort of paradigm shift jarring. Does it destroy the narrative? Of course not, it's just different, it's more immersive. If the sets look fake on the Hobbit, then that's a failure of the set design, the rest is just a case of people getting used to new technology which they usually need to be dragged kicking and screaming to the water on.
+1 I kind of like that he took a risk. I think the story and composition will be so good that people won't complain so much about the aesthetic. This is what people say about the GH2 (Video). It can be tweaked in post. ;) -
@gene_can_sing: Don't feel sad. Just keep your Canon for stills. Love the MkII. Or you can just sell the lenses. They keep value pretty well. Canon is just focusing on the higher-end and going away from pro-sumers/consumers. We'll be able to get the same specs from other manufacturers at a much better price. Wait another year or so and there might be a T5i that is 4K.
-
i haven't read and wrapped my head around all the specs but as far as the price...i think by this time next year or soon thereafter, 4k cams will be commonplace and the pricepoint will be less then 1/2 of what is offered on this 1DC cam ($4-5K). I would just wait. And we haven't even seen what Panny will release. Guessing that will be the 4K cam that takes the crown for 1st gen 4K video. I'll have to admit Canon releases very nice/sexy looking cams at the most unsexy of prices possible. Love all the new tech.

Panasonic jumping into the world of 4K at NAB 2012?
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Awesome news! I would look forward to this the most out of all the 4K announcements. AVC Ultra!! I expect Canon to also release a 4K DSLR next week. -
I was just reading about a rumored 4K Sony Playstation 4. Now this. Its too good......... :o
Canon 4d 45 MP 4k Video 5d III body 4500-5000$ Crappy AF dual digic 5+ What do I win when I'm right? 8) I have a feeling Canon will not release a EOS full frame camera that does not strengthen their stills line. But who knows maybe it will be a 4K EOS full frame that is the perfect video camera! You really think they'd charge less than 20 grand for that though?
I'll guess they will release the first '4k' cam with their Cinema line (and dinner :). So above the C300 and more $20K-ish. This 45mp is a great idea though since it would upstage the d800 with the 4K rez. But that would undermine some of the C300.....so maybe later? I don't know. But its an opp for them to charge premium since there will be the early adopters who don't mind paying max price.

I think the imagery is amazing..... I know and realize the limitations. Hats off to JVC for at least starting something like this at under 5K.

Nikon say "we will make our stills cameras for videographers"
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I think there's going to be tradeoffs in the d800/mkIII comparisons. Areas where either cam out does the other. But, the most important thing to me is 1) Resolution. 2) Price. And these are 2 areas that Nikon looks to have taken it. Still think Canon will release a higher mp cam and that will be a better comparison to the d800. -
Will Canon launch EOS Movie line as well as 4K Cinema EOS at NAB 2012?
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras

Could be. http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/11/2862370/canon-movie-cinema-camera-invite-las-vegas-2012
I believe this is for the screening of EOS 4K DSLR footage.
Hmm...i think, at least, they will likely have Shane Hurlbut do a presentation of something similar i saw recently of Act of Valor. It could also announce more info on their '4K' cam. That would be a great thing to do to get some momentum back. They may be putting all of their eggs into this basket and venue/announcement. I was told that JVC will have their 4K cam on the floor. Hoping Panny will surprise everyone. I plan to be there this year. -
Anyone using this camera with an external recorder yet? What's the hold up?
I would give it another week. They just started shipping the pre-orders so we will hopefully see more real-world tests from unaffiliated shooters. Even with this latest gen of cams, i still think its probably better to have dedicated cams for stills and video.
-
I didn't realize how much the FS100 has changed. Thats a great bang4buck. I would get that now of the choices. My only concern would be in getting used to all those buttons. :) Hoping Panny will update an AF200 but i'll likely pick up a GH3 when that comes out.
-
Andrew, i really enjoyed your nature shots. Great video. This is my favorite type of work. I love the scenery and the animals. Very beautiful. I wish i was there. I can see the lack of details that you've mentioned. Again, it looks like Nature is where you really see the most drastic difference between the 2 cams. That amazing tree is not even sticking out and missing so much Wow-details. Its an amazing tree and you are limited with this cam in capturing its full-beauty. The wide shots are even more underwhelming in contrast. MkII or MkIII will continue to be a 'B' cam for Nature. Its a great stills cam no doubt!
Enjoy the comparison pics. But i wish they wouldn't use Sigma lens. It should be a Nikon 14-24 vs Canon 24L. I would love to see those 2 compared.

Nikon D800 video dark horse and the unanswered questions
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
@PAVP: I hear ya. I would wait though whether anyone leans on the MkIII or D800. Until the cams are released to the masses and into the hands of 'non-affiliated' and 'brand-agnostic' shooters will we see the cams pushed and find its limitations. Then we can make some concrete conclusions. I would not pre-order anything if you already have a GH2/MkII. I believe Canon will release a higher mp cam against the d800. Its hard to believe they will just let Nikon have that niche. You might want that. Companies like us to be impulsive. 'Gotta have it now now now...'. I am neutral and in no rush. I hope to check these out at NAB. -
Very important subject indeed. Does the D800 equal or excel against the <5DMkII> for video? I would expect at least that. Nikon came late on the video party. But i would use the GH2/GH3 for more video use and the Canon or Nikons for Stills/TL/secondary-specific video.

'We don't need no stinkin' 4K'... :)
-
Wow. Samyang did well. Have you tried the 14mm Andrew? I recently tried out the Canon 14L and its excellent but don't want to spend for that. I got the 24L/1.4 at a great price but interested in the Sam14....for extreme wide. Guessing the 50/1.4 is Sigma's best lens. The 30/1.4 is great if you can get the focusing down. I like it for close-ups but not for distance shots.

First impressions of the $2999 Nikon D800's video mode
eosjames replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Very nice write-up Andrew. I think that Nikon-followers finally have a cam where they can feel good about the stills AND video now. Its their 5DMkII. From what i've seen here and the other music video so far, it doesn't stand out and blow me away and tell me that its a dSLR 2.0 even though it is. I am thinking the MkIII will be similar in that the improvements will be more 'moderate' instead of 'significant' from the MkII, even with the rolling shutter/aliasing/moire mostly fixed. I'm thinking even now it might be a good idea to 'skip' this year's offerings and wait for the next one (if you already have a hacked GH2/5DMkII). The one which will have the 4K/RAW. That should be more significant with the human eye. I'm looking forward to the GH3 just as much.
