When i think "crash-cam", I think "camera about to get fubar'd." Lol. Even for blank check writers over there, I'd assume that's rough. But they blow shit up for millions so, hey whatever. Go ahead, shove that $12k camera in a car and throw it off a cliff, fuckit... Go Bears. lol. For all the celebrity endorsements to evoke Canon's position amongst the professional work force now though, you're right... Alexa in one hand, Canon "C" in the other. Come on.. Even if they "can" hang, which I'm sure they could pull off a production in the right hands... Nobody's asking for an EOS to helm a production right now, because they're gonna have to earn that comfort that's synonymous with the usual suspects like a Red or an Arri. Guys like Hurlbut are lucky enough to get that kind of freedom with a Mark 2, but that is rare-as-hell and most of the time it's not even an option from what i understand. Even then, it's kind of disheartening to see a 2 foot, $60k Panavision lens hanging off the front of one, lol. Because we're excited about the use of something we can afford in a mass production... Annnnd we're back in the friendzone now.

I can understand why you bought it man.. To me, & i said this in another thread, it's the dslr with the least amount of hands on it. I don't know why the only camera in the lineup to come off more than 255 values of gradation, especially at $12,000 friggin dollars, is just a $25,000 C300 waiting on another $5k+ to give you what an F3 can in that regard for much less. I personally think Canon are lucky they have customers at all at this point with the options out there now & people are wondering just exactly where they stand out? I like the charm of this camera...not sure if that's even what i want to say, but i like the form factor. They can charge what they want, but $12k is a hell of a lot even for a Hollywood producer to justify for a "crash cam" when 5D2's are intercutting with Alexa's just fine for that. I'm not saying this is a bad camera at all because i'd love to have one. I hate to hear about banding on a $12,000 camera when you probably work your ass off and that's a HUGE ordeal to pull the trigger on a purchase like that.. That's most of us. That's the boat that started all of this for Canon though, & they need to start giving a damn about why the 5D2 was such a massive hit. We could afford it.

+1 on the Roki. I'd also say the Canon FD looks great. I like the 50 1.4 better though. Keep in mind, you're using a hacked GH2 & it can cut glass like cold diamond nipples with the right lens. (See recent Zacuto shootout with the $20,000 Fuji on the front of one running a Driftwood patch..lol.. Surgery.) A lot of people will say aim for the vintage stuff to roll the edges off a little bit. I use old AIS's. i bought a whole set on KEH in ex+ cond. for less than $700 & i'll probably never get rid of them... Lest i stumble upon the aftermath of a gunfight with no survivors involving a Masterprime exchange.
-
I've often wondered about this lens.. I have the 24, 50, & the 85 Nikon AIS's. i've been looking for a 35mm for a while & this would be seemless with my filters and such.

I notice the ridiculous price at Pond 5 for anything that flies with a military attachment. Most of them all look terrible as well. High shutter speeds with no motion blur, bad exposure, just bad all around. An HS-53 breaking left in a 15 second clip was around 4 to $500!? ...It was1080p... And it looked like sh-t, lmao. The jailbroken 1DX aside, 4k (ish) stock cost substantially more than 1080. Granted I don't know who in the hell is buying that garbage but good footage is slim pickens with that stuff. I wanted some helicopters. Even if i HAD that money, i wouldn't buy it. So i made 4 phone calls and networked my way to a squadron that was nice enough to allow me to come out to the strip and video to my hearts content. (This hasn't happened yet... It's ridiculously cold up here right now.) Point is, I think there's a market out there. It's gotta be cool shit though. Like Apaches. Lol

Buuurrrrrrrrrrp. Hoo rah cameras.. I'm gonna make a full frame Iphone that shoots raw and fits in your pocket.. I i "AM" form factor.. Siri tells you if the shot was worth a damn also.. my camera is the first to instill concidence with verbal validations. Makes the Dragon sensor look cute. 4k is so 2013.. Real innovation doesn't start until you can see a cold developing on the surface of his fingernails. In a bat cave around midnight at 2,365,432 iso with no noise. 12k for $12k. Where you at now Canon? I hear the ball dropping.

Well horse c-ck. i've tried to attach a link to a video with it, but it won't show. So go to Vimeo and watch Romanlegion films' videos. They all look great. Super nice guy also. Not sure if all of his videos use 1/40, but the majority of them do if I recall. He'd tell you. There is a noticeable difference for the better to my eyes though. I'm a big fan of motion blur in the cinematic look. I hate the stuttery high shutter stuff.
-
Just out of curiosity, does the Gh3 still use 16-235? Or is it full range now.
-
I got turned onto 1/40 from Roman Legions stuff on his GH2. 1/50 doesn't look terrible, but that extra notch down seemed to really make a difference with his videos in the cinematic motion department.. Shooting an action scene might not be ideal though, lol

BBC freelance cameraman tests Super 35mm 1080p on the Canon 1D C
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It's a jailbroken Canon dslr. I look at the specs, and this one has the least amount of intentional blockades in the whole line up. Legal threats if anybody tampered with the 1DX. Etc. I like that it's a low light bad ass. I like Canon's version of an 8 bit colorspace, and the form factor is great & I'd definitely not turn one down if it was realistically priced for those specs. At the end of the day though, more shit will be talked about this camera than a janitor at a truckstop because we can all plainly see that it's just the least hindered one of the bunch... For the price of a car. Hell.. They discontinued the 5D2.. (Which was probably the greatest accident ever) - it was $1500. Now they've jumped it up to the same price as the newer faster 6D?!... Capitalizing on it like Mr. Crabs. -

Yeah I really don't understand why people still buy the Canon's in droves when there are better options at equivalent price points....or less. The 5D2 had a hell of a sexy image, without its shortcomings... They can have Scorcese or Spielberg or whoever else they want, put their name on a C-Something... and 9 times out of 10 those guys are still using Alexa's, Epics, Film, etc.. We'll only hear otherwise if they AREN'T using those. lol. Maybe Shane has a deal with Canon, maybe not... He didn't have to shoot an action movie on 5D2's though, and endure the pain in the ass that must have been..For the rolling shutter alone, lol... but he did, and a lot of us have 5D's. So I like the guys heart on the matter by bridging the gap between mainstream, and the rest of us in the trenches. Because it sure ain't Canon doing that anymore. -
The form factor and size of it kind of throw off a little charm I guess. It's big enough to feel like you're holding a damn camera & apparently that's worth a lot more than I'd thought it would be to most.. Despite whooping it's ass in resolution, I still struggle with taking the GH2 seriously sometimes, (until I hit play..lol..) I've actually heard this from others while trying to decipher why people still sweep Canon's off the shelves with their shortcomings. The million dollar question for me was, "Hey Shane Hurlbut, Why are you so nuts over the Canon DSLR's when a GH2 even without a hack, out resolves them?"........to which he responded: "Not a fan of Panny's colorspace." Binding agreements or whatever obligations he may or may not have to Canon, I always thought the 5D2 had some of the most gorgeous looking color I've seen in terms of video & I still think it does. That's 8 bit....I still don't think any of them Canon has come out with since,.. especially the 5D3, look as good as it does. They don't look bad, per se', but I think they nailed it with the 5D2....that's personal preference:) The 1DC is pretty awesome, but aside from a heat dispersion unit, & a couple of other little tid-bits, it's a jailbroken dslr.
-
I was gonna say, lol. It shouldn't overheat because that is one of the only differences in hardware to the 1DX.. Haha
-
That was Shian Storm! The guy who put out ColorGHear. Lol.. This topic always turns into a heated debate everytime as to the relevance of shooting flat, transcoding or working 8 bit footage in a larger colorspace. I've A/B'd in After Effects 8bit space, then switched it to 32 and clearly had more positive results.. (Especially with Canon footage.) Alas, there's always an Astro Physicist on a forum who spits his coffee all over the screen when he sees it, & does a Princess Bride: "That's Inconceivable!" ..Then proceeds to leave a 5000 word reply telling you it's all in your head, because the specifications don't equate to the number of maximum color values allotted within an 8 bit space, thus truncating the blah blah f-ck me hey Macarana.. I'm looking right at it! Lol.. I see banding mostly on a wall as the light gets darker. I'm testing Low Contrast filters to try and maximize DR going in without using a flat profile on a GH2 & aggrevating it. (Mainly because it doesn't give you many options in cam.) Those don't really work like I was hoping. You really have to lock your shots down and compose around the filter rather than the other way around.
-
They should bring this down a notch... Seriously. A half an hour of record time runs $650 at 128gb per CF. I like the camera, considering it's the ultimate "jailbroken" dslr we all tried to have with our 5D's, etc... But damn. They price like they owe Vegas loan sharks when there are better options for less, or much better for just a little more.
-
Saw this, & i have to laugh.. Because even though the Scarlet shoots raw, at 16bit color, at 4k..... Who the f--k is shooting 60p at 4k beeeotch?... C300?.... :( Better cameras, yeah i know... Just sounds like a valid argument. Lol
-
I figured. You can't cheat it. I hear the argument about Cinestyle being a Log profile in a tiny room.... but personally I always had better results with it than without it. I never pushed it into CSI Miami territory either though... Lol. It sucks, for sure being locked down in bandingville. Dynamic range will always be the bane of these camera's existence. There are workarounds like Cineform, editing in 32 bit, etc.. But that's a terrible pain in the ass and it wasn't there from the get go. So maybe it's not worth even messing with. Lol. I hate thinking I'll be waiting on the BMC for another year, but these issues won't be concerns finally.

An unexpected trilogy.

I heard it was avail. On Amazon and Samy's. I'm sure that's gone though by now..
-
Meh. Opinions vary. I like its image regardless of whether it gets me laid or not. I like how Canon handles 8 bit color a shitload better than everybody else does, but that's my opinion. I hate bullshit arguments over camera specs. If it looks good, who gives a shit. They kick ass in low light, this one doesn't cheat a video image and leave you with rainbows and jaggies into a 4:2:0 squashed codec. It's got enough resolution for me. The Red One was a 4k sensor that wasn't 4k for the same reason, but I don't think the directors that used it on big productions gave a shit about what everybody else thought. Alas It's $12k & that's Canon for you. If they priced products more reasonably I don't think people would be so passionately pissed at them. Raw for $3k has opened the curtains.
