1. Dead horse question perhaps, but does the custom profile show any significant changes in dialing the contrast back manually? Or, did they listen to the wrong filmmakers.. Lol.
2. I love the comment on the Alexa not being cinema worthy, lol... (Cough.... Oscar for Hugo.. Cough..) I hate to sound like a hippy screaming, "conspiracy!" ... But, this looks like a pretty significant event involving how these "Dynasty cams" stack up to each other.. (Which honestly, these are the cream of the crop. They all look amazing.). How on earth they let a faulty Gemini shut the Alexa out with a pro res codec is weird... Even though I don't think seasoned DP's would stop requesting one based off of this event, I agree.. That's bullshit, lol. That Delta is one of the most innovative designs I've seen. The shutter was the coolest thing ever I thought in that article... For those of us, (and this is "most" of us, lol) - all of these are still ridiculously expensive just to "rent"! The only one of the group that may come down to a reasonable day rate is obviously the Epic with the recent price drops. That's still speculation... It'd be cool to shoot on an Alexa with a set of Master Primes one day. It's just money, lol.
3.
Maybe everyone on EOSHD, can send a video of their's, pretending to be (or impersonating) one of the freaks from one of these discussion groups, and then, we could color correct all the footage, and make it into a short. We could chose screen names, similar to some characters, in one of these forums. :D that would be Hilarious ...
+1
4.
Now that's a short video skit just begging to be made.
What's funny is, somebody whipped out forum senority on him in one comment, lol. "Who the f-ck do you think you are anyway... "Junior Member"...?! You know how many posts i've got!? Your opinion doesn't even MATTER, for another 319, son! Check out my handle.. It says 'veteran". ....HIGHLIGHTED! I'm a damn dyed in the wool forum american icon! I eat trolls & sh-t noobs for breakfast."
5.
I'd be inclined to agree with you, but when I placed my preorder for the MFT version (same day that it was announced), the reseller cautioned me that Black Magic has slipped release dates several times before, with one (media storage solution?) taking a year from the original release date to hit shelves. If that is true, I find it hard to believe that this is purely the result of a manufacturing problem with a sub-contracted company. But even after hear this, I still put my name on the list. The MFT version's ship date is not yet upon us, but I expect delays. I won't be up in arms about it. Either I'll get a great camera from BlackMagic, or a great camera from another company if they take too long. I will not participate in any name-calling.
I've heard that also.. It seems like their issue is just getting suppliers they can rely on. They come out with these awesome products that people can "afford", but finding a reliable supplier is a pain in the ass to get it out there on launch.. Once they get the "bugs" worked out for a steady production, they're good to go. We just revamped our entire video acquisition at church to future proof for a multisite broadcast projection of the sermon. BMD was all over it from upscaling, to processing, etc. They were super friendly.. i had a great experience working with them on something that was a huge undertaking... so i guess that's why i hate to see them get hated on.. Red had issues, but everything they make is in-house i assume, sans the t-shirt department, lol.
6.
hahaha ... apparently one hapless sould tried to reason and figure out why, but, it didn't, apparently, help ... :P Lmao.. Dp review... Weird... If filmmaking forum was a city, dp review would be like, a dark alley at 2:00 am in Compton. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3296058
Poor guy.. I just left the latest annoucement on the BMC forum.. Trying to get an update on whether i'll see it before Christmas....2013. While i can understand the frustration everyone must feel over the consistent delays, (a lot of it stems from prior events of products not delivered by BMC on their projected dates..) - i can't help but have sympathy for the guy. It's like watching some little kid get his ass beat by a group of teenagers over there, lol. Some seriously hateful comments that make Personal view look like My Little Pony.. The fact that the company which provide the key component arguably, failed numerous times to deliver a quality part on their end, is not BMD's fault. Some of the arguments are aimed directly at his business chops, or lack thereof. Some threats of lawsuits, etc.. Just bullshit actually. The whole concept was to deliver a Cinema camera packing specs normally priced to rent, or own by rich folk... And make it available for a market that doesn't have that kind of money, yet probably contains the next Orsen Wells.. I think the mindset of that idea alone is why it sucks to see the guy get crucified over the delay.. They could've charged a LOT more.. Resolve also? Gees.. Yeah, don't tell people one thing and not deliver.. Bad business.. I get it.. They're not the first company to have issues at launch. They don't have the luxury of Sony resources. The only way to justify a camera of this caliber at a price thousands less than everything else is to utilize lower cost components.. You get what you pay for though, and apparently the work ethic of the sensor company was the corner cutter.. But I'm glad BMD isn't shipping out a bunch of half-ass cameras instead! So apparently they know the problem, it's being resolved as we speak, and production will kick hard core like a sweatshop very shortly to accomodate these attitudes.. I figure for what they didn't have to make, but did, at the price they're asking... - should hold the customer accountable for a decent bit of patience considering the demand for these damn things. Especially when we know he's probably ten times as frustrated as we are, being held accountable for a shoddy supplier. This is their first venture into making a camera, and if we're holding out hope that they make a 35mm sensor camera next, it may prove to be more grief than it's worth..
8. I have a 7" lilliput monitor on mine also.. Hooked into hdmi, very reliable and i would say essential.. I have a loupe with a diopter for focusing, but the other 95% of the time, i'm using the lilliput. It does much better than that turd of an LCD attached to the Gh2 when you hit record.. (Doesn't go apeshit "blue-green" when you start recording, lol.) There is still the gamma shift issue, but nothing like the lcd.. i paid $220 for mine.
9.
The problem with this camera is the sensor which only resolved about 630 lines and didnt handle highlights and dynamic range that well. Its great they added 10 bit 4.2.2 out and probably a firmware upgrade and not any changes to the camera itself. Maybe they are just getting rid of to much old stock and then ditching it.
Amen... We get a really clean turd. Lol
10. I hate that this camera takes stills... F'ckin hate it, lol... All selfishness aside, i expected ridiculous Moire if it was confirmed... This isn't too bad though;). It's mirrorless... So maybe we'll get a Mosaic filter later, lol... Shooting Log style is great for post work, i especially appreciate it when it comes to highlights.. It'd pay off pretty decent i'd assume if the banding issues are far better now. I don't like the idea of baking in anything my grading program can't do a thousand times more efficiently, so printing a log style Picture Profile is something i hope they eventually implement. It's really good to hear the color and dynamic range are much better!! This was huge for me. 8 bit has its limitations, but Canon always seemed to draw color i preferred over the Gh2 in video, so i knew it could be done within the barriers.. For all of its quirks, the 5d2 still has a sexy pallete. ...at the price of everything else though, lol. Now when, (or "if") - they hack this thing, it will be interesting to see what they can manipulate.
11. It updated hard core, for sure. It's a brick shithouse now with a consistent resolution between slow-mo and 24p which is huge. Clean out is huge. A better screen was insanely needed, and a freakin' quad core processor? I would'nt even be talking right now man if I knew for a fact it did or didn't have aliasing/moire issues. That's based on the mindset of a guy strictly buying it for its video department... But why build a masterpiece of potential as a successor to the Gh2, which despite the hack, was the only one almost completely devoid of aliasing/moire at the time, - and leave it in this time around? That nearly trumps everything, because it's the purpose of the product, the image. So I wanna get it... I have a gh2. If it has A/M..there are workarounds i suppose. I've shot succesful videos on a T2i before, lol..
12. I'm thinking this is now the Panasonic C100, lol.. So the codec is good... Hyperdeck's are realistic for most of us, & 10bit 4:2:2 is great:) I agree on @screenpro's comment above in terms of potential... For me personally, i love shooting log style with plenty of room to shoot in. The highlights always drove me nuts with the Gh2 and the af100.. You always have at least one issue that falls short where everythig else is awesome. Gh2 with a hack: high bitrate, no moire, killer video, 2 stops of latitude, lol. Af100: xlr, bigger design, 1080p 60p, low bitrate. I love Cinestyle on the Canons, or Cine visionplus, picture styles.. But we all know where the Canons fall short.. It'd be nice just to get some dynamic range, & a log profile to go with the clean out on this thing for a reasonable price.. I think next year is the big one for Panny. Whatever they have coming regarding a cinema line may be best left to unfold after all of these announcements this year.. Sucks waiting, but now the cards are on the table. Maybe now they're busting out some major development tweaks in response... Could be in our favor?
13.
I thought the same way, but Karim's video, the one in the topic the OP posted, does show moiré in spite of having been shot with the Voigtlander as well. It worries me a bit. On the other hand, Andrew posted this on Twitter: "[background=rgb(245, 245, 245)]Panasonic GH3 is an amazing piece of technology, so far ahead of DSLRs in many respects not just video. Full report this weekend…"[/background] I have a little more hope now. Unless he's embraced moiré. :P
Lol... I doubt it. That is a good sign though...
14. This is probably an oxymoron comment, since the topic suggest you're on a budget... - i would save up for the Gh3 though if it were a possibility. The only thing that truly sucks right now is the possibility that it has moire/aliasing issues... There are videos that have it, and others that don't. That's a pretty big deal though with a lot of people regarding whether they'll pull the trigger on one or not, and unfortunately, no substantial answers. "Almost" all footage shot with the gh3 on the web right now has been with the Panasonic 12-35x lens. I'm not sure how a lens would introduce aliasing artifacts into an image, but the other footage shot with the Voigtlander 25mm, and "Genesis" with the Olympus, SLR glass showed none. In all other facets though, the Gh3 wins... If they clear the aliasing issue, then i'd do it in a heartbeat, since eventually it will be hacked. It's got much faster processing now also, so game on..
15.
What would be the best video dslr right now? A Canon 5D III beats a GH3 in low light for sure and has better dynamic range, but no 1080p60. I'm pretty sure it has less detail in video and it's three times as expensive. Even with the GH3 being twice the price of the GH2, I can't think of anything else that beats it price/performance wise.
A Gh2 if it has moire and aliasing.
16.
Personally, I think I will skip the GH3, and put that 1300 towards storage and ssd's for a BMCC. It's where we're all heading anyways right? I'm realizing now that the GH3 was just an uneccesary step between here and there.
It is a "step", lol... You look at the best for the price range... In the bracket of DSLR's, i have to admit the Gh3 might not be the best Right now, but it probably will be once "they" unlock it & start digging in. There's a lot more horsepower in this one... Whether it goes apeshit when you point it at a powerline is something else.
17. https://vimeo.com/52019304 If you haven't seen this, have a look. It's not here.
18. I'm not sure how many people even know this camera takes stills, lol. I agree on the fact that moire/aliasing are a no go... Still, why is it on one video and not on the next? For most of the examples i have seen, again, they are the 12-35x lens on super-video mode.. The "my first impression" video with the Voigtlander 25, showed no moire or aliasing that i saw.. He even did a scene specific set of shots to find it... I saw none in Genesis as well.. (Just some noise in the dark sky when the lead character is getting shookdown by the police....though that could have been web compression i dont know...can't see something like that being acceptable by 2 respected DP's on a launch video) Regardless... Panasonic has to be getting over-run with emails and questions over these concerns.. I dig my gh2, & i'd love to get the 3.. But if moire/aliasing are there, forget it. This camera scores high in everything in terms of upgrades.. But it's like painting a beautiful picture, then wiping your ass with it. In this case the ass is a metaphor for aliasing, incase no one got that. Not abstract art.. Seems like "good enough" is the mindset though if version 0.5 is the final word... It's a month away, which doesn't leave much time for easing the concerns of the public regarding issues if they plan on a different firmware.. Then again, there is a subliminal deadline that it has to be addressed before release if it's a firmware issue, however, if it's hardware and there's moire... Bummer.
19.
Here's a small sample video in DNxHD of a few shots from the Distant Project music video. I had to divide into two parts. http://www.mediafire.com/?8n6ahoafda16f And about Flow Motion, I don't know if it's that patch that introduces the "shooting star" artifact or what, but from I tried it once and thought it was garbage, mainly due to this: Flow Motion v2 on top. Sedna Q20A below it. Quick question about Sedna:) i've only used AQ1... From what i understand AQ1 is the better of the 2 but i'm not really understanding the difference.. Benefits, etc.. What the hell is "Q" anyway, lol? ...
20. What does a 4k image look like...? Lol... Is it like, 2 fleas having a domestic dispute in the background of a shot, resolution?
21. It has 1080, 60p & a body that doesn't feel like a toy. The screen is much better. The processors are killer. From what i understand an important aspect in the video department that the Gh2 didn't have is an 8x8 matrix.. (Someone else can explain its significance, i just know it was a desirable trait in the gh2 they tried to emulate with a patch.) i don't know how "log" style you can get it to shoot, whether it is confirmed or not to have aliasing/moire issues as some videos have shown it while others have not.. Mainly the razor sharp sterile hand held 12-35x videos that keep popping up with what looks like everything shot on soccer mom mode. (Soccerball on the dial, lol.) What the hell is the "high dynamic range" sensor doing differently here exactly... It doesn't look any different in terms of latitude & that was a huge, huge deal with the highlights and noise on the gh2.. Alas.. It will be hacked more than likely, and hopefully regardless of whether or not panasonic release another firmware addressing some of these concerns, Personal View does.. Just sucks that they may have to.
22. It sucks the One MX is end of life... But such is life... No Dragon upgrade, the dinosaur.. Lol. That's a hell of a camera for $4000. Didn't it utilize an external red drive you could get that was 320gbs at one time? It was the only one that's done that right?.... Red Mags are ridiculous, and a Red exclusive 16gb CF card sounds like a waste of the 5 minutes you'd get out of it at 4k... Don't really understand the logic of formatting the drive so it only takes Red CF cards or the fact that they're only 16gb... But they must be badass to be like $300 each. (Don't quote me.) To me though, going through the "red stuff for sale" thread, i've seen MX packages with the works going from $5-12k depending on the miles.. The external 320gb drive sounds like the way to go if someone had one for sale.. As far as Epic and Scarlet are concerned, the rental price may go down substantially now. I knew I probably still wouldn't be able to afford an Epic or a Scarlet system, but an Epic might not be $2000 a day to rent now!! Other than that, I'm pretty sure most people are more concerned about getting ahold of a $4000 Red One now that they're realistic... Which begs the question: since the only available units for sale are battle tested, wtf were they selling a couple of days ago for $25,000? Lol Hey.. I'm sure nothing will be good enough until it is 38k resolution or whatever according to Red, but not for a few years at least, lol. If they sold nothing but Red One MX's for $4000 until then, i'm sure they'd claim the market for a long time... Plenty of major productions have used Red One's. i don't even need to name drop.
23.
I call it the "shooting stars artifact" because it is rays of brighter color that travel from the top left to the bottom right part of the image, looks like shooting stars. They are visible in dark parts of the image, mostly visible in very dark parts. It is very visible when you push the image in post, if you want to see it download the dynamic range comparison I posted in my gh3 quick handheld comparison thread. More subtle but clearly visible here (not my work): https://vimeo.com/47358813 At the end of the video on the wood behind the bea hive. Watch in full screen you won't miss it.
I don't know if anybody picked up on this, but there seem to be a couple of issues in Flowmotion like a weird rain looking like pattern in dark areas, and flickering issues. Digging for a link while you're on your phone is a p.i.t.a. so i'll just tell you to look up a guy named "Roman Legion Films" in Vimeo. He points out an issue in one of his videos with it.. Maybe it's the same thing you're seeing as it seems like a common issue now popping up.. I didn't really see it in mine.... But i didn't really look for it either. Another issue was a lowlight shot with my new voigtlander and my 5 year old. I did a slow push from her full body sitting up in her bed watching tv up to her face. I wanted "eerie" with just the tv light reflections. The wall behind her bed is big, empty, and white right now so it looks creepy as hell. Try as i may adjusting shutter, and frame rate, i could not fix the fact that the light reflection was flickering consistently like i was shooting in PAL land or something. So i ditched the shot and put her to bed, lol. The thing is, I didn't check it on my computer. I know the Gh2's lcd is awful with gamma shift, refresh rate, & such.. So maybe someone can chime in if they've seen something similar. I know Flowmotion is great in almost all other aspects, but i'm back to Sedna. It's an All-i patch and that could've had something to do with it as well even though FM is only a 3gop patch.. Who knows.. Point is, others have seen the problems you're talking about. I thought Flowmotion was the last patch I'd ever need until these little issues. Now i'm fairly certain a high bitrate, all-i patch is about as good as the gh2 can get.. All of these matrix adjustments to simulate 4:4:4 characteristics on a 4:2:0 camera are really indiscernible to me.. I can't see a difference in any of them anymore. Sanity was awesome regarding noise in lowlight.. I didn't have any hardly.. Until i saw it only pushed 17mbs in the scene and thus, just smeared it out along with blocking in the highlights of all things.. Lol. Bad. Sedna and CM night seem to be the best from what i've seen... But then again, they're 150+mbps all-i patches that require the 64/95 card or forget reliability.
