You've had too much coffee! Half-Caf should help:). Lol
You will see the softness big time on a huge screen - when compared to other cams on a huge screen. However, put some beautiful naked girl dancing with another beautiful naked girl and I really doubt anyone will give a shit. They'll call you the new Coppola :)
Have to agree... I highly doubt a pixel peeper would be saying, "oh man. Look at the macro blocking on those nipples. Terrible codec."

Tony knew how to frame tension like a God. Watch the argument Will Smith has with his wife on Enemy of the State when things really heat up. Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Or the end all be all: Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper's scene on True Romance. Not too big of a fan of his subtitled flash photography duo.. (Domino, Man on Fire... Too complicated). Although Man on Fire was a hell of a movie. Close-ups!! Moody.. The scene in Crimson Tide, darken ship. The rotating amber light on The actors faces through the red light. Convincing Vigo Mortensen to turn against Denzel Washington. He could pull every ounce of emotion out of them because he left them nothing to hide behind when you could see their pores perspiring.

Sony full frame video cameras coming with universal lens mount
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hey It's digital. This whole "cinema" camera adjective is the culmination of a bunch of companies catering to consumer demands so they don't become another statistic in a bad economy... Doesn't make up for a $15,000 1DX, but it explains the reason it was made... The technology's out there. The purpose in digital acquisition when it comes to filmmakers. is to allot them the freedom they need for a faster turn around. Most guys shooting on Red and such, have a dailie's reel that evening.. Though I love the idea of shooting on film, I don't have the "Nolan" budget to get a celluloid reel that evening... Most don't and you really have to earn your stripes to get to that level. With the right amount of processing power, these cameras can probably do anything. On specs alone, Sony shot the Zacuto test barebones with the F65 as a big middle finger to everybody pretty much... It really is a bad motherf---er. That's a camera that won't keep Sony in business though... An F65 for under $3000 will.... And then it will dominate the market... And then there won't be any worries until somebody brings out a better camera for less. Viscious cycle. :) -
No sir it is not! Lol.. In TEN years our kids will be saying, "4k?... Were you guys Amish?!". 18k sensors with 76 stops of dynamic range. 2,000 fps. full frame. On an I phone.

Revenge of the Zacuto Shootout 2012 - Part 3 review
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It doesn't bother me. Nobody with any experience on a Gh2 would cater to its weaknesses in a real world shoot like the Empirical test. I think they just went for the cleanest image with a nice sheen on it, and that's fine. It has kind of an immediately gratifying characteristic... But by no means would i give it the "film look" stamp. Seriously, an old fast takumar for about a hundred bucks and the right grading could've taken this in a totally different direction. You can't stick a razor lens like the Fujinon in front of a Gh2 with a 150mb patch and expect it to not perform surgery. You almost have to throw some dirt on it to give it some soul... But that's cool because it's cheaper. I've seen plenty of footage that looked filmic. Granted, I can't film an indoor scene on a bright sunny day and get all manner of what's going on out the window as well as inside. But i've seen plenty of Films shot on actual FILM that blow out windows also. Each sensor has its own character. A lot of these cameras throw a "milky" characteristic on skin that drives me nuts... You too $70,000 Alexa... -

Lmao. You guys should head over to provideo coalition.com and read the pissing contest between Steve Weiss and Art Adams in the comments at the bottom. Pretty passionate stuff.. http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/aadams/story/cameras_why_zacutos_latest_camera_test_may_have_screwed_us_all/P1/ -
I just updated today.. It won't let me dial in a 180 degree shutter? Are you having that problem? It's weird. I get the option of like, 147.3 or something like that... Probably negligible and no big deal, but why would that be an option... Probably just operator error. Haven't had any time to really tinker with it, but it did look killer
I'm not a follower by any means. I do tons of research. I do not just take anyones word for something. However, Bloom has proven himself (much like Vincent Laforet) I do trust Bloom. I met him several times (as well as Laforet) in Vegas (NAB) and he is a genuinely likable guy with a passion for gear. I do not think Bloom would deliberately lie to anyone about cameras. As far as my own eyes go, I downloaded the original file from Bloom's video (as well as James Miller's videos) and it (they) looks fantastic to me. Much much better than any other DSLR footage I have ever seen. Art is subjective, right? I love full frame and trying to decide to purchase the 1DX or the new Sony…or...rent the Canon 1 DC 4 K in a few months. I also love the DSLR form factor. I shoot in places where it is either illegal or would cost enormous amounts of cash to get permits. Plus it’s amazing tech for the size and I don't need a large crew. Germy1979 - I do like the footage from the Alexa but out of my price range. What camera did you end up with?
Well, since 2012 was the year all the new guys came out... At the time, the GH2 was on sale if you found it, and i snagged one for around $650 new. I bought an LCD, 3 Nikkor AIS manuals (24 f2.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f2) - a shoulder rig with a follow focus/ matte box, 2 Sandisk Extreme Pros 64/95's, a fader hd variable nd, 3 adapters, an Opteka Steadivid Pro, and a Davison tripod with a fluid head. All of this for less than one day's rental of an Alexa. The Alexa's awesome... But so are Ferraris. Lol. I don't make a living as a DP yet, so opportunities to shoot are spontaneous sometimes. It's hard to call a rental house and snag an Alexa on the fly unless the price is right... In my case it was wrong:). I get great results with my Gh2. I have everything else i need to get me going in case the Gh3, A99, or the BMD just have to be had:). And i wasn't out a lot of money for the Gh2. Plus, it's a great camera and it'll make some kids dream come true on Christmas morning when I sell it:) Wish this technology was around when I was making my army movies, lol. #VHS

.....i think it looks like a C300. Super sharp "digital" look. No rolling shutter, good low light, 28mbs, cuts out a lot of the price tag for rigs... Pretty streamlined, interchangeable lens, etc.. I like it:). It's only $500 more than a 5D3.....and what, $10,000 less than a C300. ( sorry but....baaahahahahahaaaaa!).
But in this case this is not being a gearhead. I'm over stating stuff because I can't believe the indifference so many people have to something so evident and bad looking. This is purely based on what I saw when watching a music video: an image that hit me in the face because of its uncommon artifacts. I've shot short films and movies for 7 years, and I've drawn and painted my whole life. I live through images. I do VFX all the time. Animation. I have a trained eye. And I believe Philip does too, and he probably has far better equipment than I do. So how come he denies such an obvious shortcoming (I have to say that softness is a lot more filmic than jagged edges and pixelated details, really...)? It can be better in every other aspect, but this single one, considering this is an HD camera intended for film production, is a really bad one. And this is the main point: don't repeat someone's words as if they were the most qualifed truth, the undeniable opinion on what's good just because of his experience. Judge for yourself. Do you like the image that camera produces? Do you believe it's worth its price? That's great. But do it because you think it's so, not because a celebrity cinematographer says it is. I saw what comes out of the camera and think it's not up to par with what he's claims, if even for one single aspect of the image. I'm not afraid to question Philip for being experienced. I trust my experience, my work and my sensitivity.
Amen. I spent 2 years researching cameras and pixel peeping when i was putting my budget together. It got to the point where i was reorganizing my budget plan for a different camera all the time, and finally I figured the only way i could make a film was with an Alexa. What a waste of money that would've been... $3000 a day for a rental package.

Anyone been using Edelkrone rigs for their GH2 or DSLR for shoots???

Revenge of the Zacuto Shootout 2012 - Part 3 review
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Although I agree with a number of things you mentioned in your critique of part 3 (in particular, where you talk about endless reminders about the importance of creativity which BTW often look like mantras lacking any sunstance), I think the overall tone of your blog post (and your advices) are not appropriate. Part 3 does not confirm your major leitmotif regarding GH2 - not a surprise, you do not like it. Here is a piece of advice for you - next time you do what Zacuto did with their overall excellent and amazing effort by its scale and contribution to the filmmaking community, and then we'll see if you are up to the challange yourself. To finish on a positive note - I respect what you do and check your blog almost every day. Equally, I respect your contribution to the community (even if I sometimes disagree with all your biases). But, man, learn your place.
Man...it's like bad mouthing Texas. Get your ass shot off over cameras around here... Yeah they did put in a lot of effort...but damn... Putting on a test like that would not be what i considered a terrible inconvenience.. Using the best technology on the market, working with and interviewing some of the most respected DP's of our time.... Sounds awful. Which one of us wouldn't jump at the opportunity to do something like this if we we're Steve Weiss? The whole point of this series was to get us all out of the forums and out there in the field. (I'm guilty as hell here on it myself, so don't crucify me:). It's fun to talk shop on technology. That's all it is. People on Youtube are telling each other to go f--k themselves by the 9th comment over there because the uploader didn't use "smooth" -2 -2 -2 -2 and thus, the test was void.. It's retarded how personal people get over it. For every negative comment on a camera, there are probably 2 or 3 positives out there somewhere if someone is researching. I have a T2i and a GH2. I've seen just about every negative comment there is on the T2i... But i absolutely love Cinestyle and Magic Lantern. I love the GH2... It's a detail monster and Flowmotion is the best patch i've ever used... But i prefer Canons look sometimes. No forum told me that... But if it did, i sure as hell wouldn't post 50 pounds of negative on the commenters face... Pretty condescending. -
Less megapixels don't equal more DR any more. Red confirmed this with the new Dragon sensor. 6K and 15 stops of DR! That is a similar megapixel count to the 22MP of the 5D Mark III or 24MP of the A99. It all comes down to pixel design not pixel count. And of course the way the data is read off the sensor and the way it is downscaled for video. And nobody would claim raw stills from the 22MP 5D Mark III lack for dynamic range.
...you have to overlook me sometimes man. Rule of thumb generally tells you not to document a blackout with a D800. Then the F65 scans a 20 megapixel frame 24 times a second.
-
If you jump down to what a DSLR is going to give you in terms of video features, i guess it could do anything a video specific camera would do.... Except video "specific" cameras utilize smaller megapixel sensors for better DR. Anything is possible these days though if you put enough horsepower behind the task. (processors).... I think the days of Moire and Aliasing (exclude Canon) - are over... The no bullsh-t list basically narrows down to people that want to shoot an action scene in a closet with the lights out and not get any noise or rolling shutter. Lol..
-
They have said a few times, (consitently as well:) - it will be around $2699. Yeah that's expensive... But you usually get what you pay for.... Unless you get a Canon. Lol. Well. Damn.... So here we are. BMC, A99, & a GH3. All 3 of these are going to be insanely awesome. The a99, and gh3 will probably have clean hdmi out, or AVCHD 2/ultra... Moire and Aliasing are gone. From what i've read they can do a better job downsampling in camera than with using an olpf. Speculations... We won't get into that. With the way it sounds, they'll have all the features we like, and it will come down to a low-light battle. Panasonic had 3 processors in the GH2. The Gh3 will probably have enough processing power to conduct a shuttle launch. Gees.. That seems to still be an issue with these other cameras for video mode.. But then again, i can hear the hate comment, "They are stills cameras @sshole!!!!" - already, lol.

Most significant clue so far about Blackmagic Cinema Camera performance
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Forget the hack, you are no longer going to need it. Cannot say any more. Photokina... I will be there!!
You.......butthole!!!!!!!! Lmao. I almost pulled the plug on a 5d... But i took your advice and i'm gonna wait. I think Canon has its strong points i like. I actually just put the "Vision Color" picture style on my T2i with Magic Lantern and i really like it... But then the Canon issues are still there. I've come to realize, Canon's are like Stratocasters, lol.. You buy one, and the first thing you do is swap out the pick ups, tuners, bridge, strings, pots, and knobs. Then you have an awesome guitar.. On a Canon, you port Magic Lantern, buy a fast card, install a log picture style, buy a mosaic filter, and then you have a "decent" video camera... :). I wanted to see the BMC's flaws. So your title's right. This is significant.. .. Most people's issues on DOF should be settled now for sure... I think it has great range. I can see out of windows without crushing everything in the room, and the motion looks great. Granted i'm more for 24p than 25p... (such a minor difference, but you can kind of tell..) - I think Shian's grade on the frame grab from the pool scene was very great. I've seen 5d footage look wonderful when a seasoned colorist gets ahold of it. This is the whole package honestly. A lot of people are just going to have to stop researching and start shooting! Which is liberating considering the Waiting we all did this year, lol. Nobody even saw this camera coming! We all had our hopes up for the 5d3... Oh the irony.. I think we're all kind of selling ourselves short with this camera. I don't think it will be a let down... Most of us know how to expose a scene correctly and how to stabilize, etc. John Brawley's sole purpose is not to market this camera also, i would assume. A lot of people know about this camera, yes... But the manufacturing plant for Canon is probably 5 to 10 times larger and faster than Blackmagic's. Just a hunch based on time in as a company... Can you imagine how long we'd have to wait to get ours if they had handed this off to a bunch of celebrity DP's to market? It's kind of a trade off. I'd have liked to have seen some different styles on this camera, but I'd also like to have one sooner than Christmas 2013. Blackmagic's a pretty damn good company. Davinci Resolve is a super powerful coloring program & the fact that you get the freedom $100,000 will get you from acquisition, to finished product for $3000 is awesome. It's a great time to be doing this. -
I have never used the Panasonic Leica 25mm. Is it stabilized? The Voigtlander is a touch soft but I can rely on it. My GH2 in particular struggles with low-light. I don't trust it not to band anywhere above 640 ISO. It's good to have a lens in my kit that can produce usable video in all but the worst lighting conditions. The 12-35mm Lumix may end up becoming that all-round lens for me. I had the 17-55mm EF-S with the 7D and it was so useful that I rarely took it off the camera. But it does seem like it might be a bit clinical and I am trying to stay away from that. I bought it for another purpose but found that it is great for shooting close up shots of products. Very little distortion, and I can get the camera to within inches of the subject. For eBay product shots, I can show people a lot of detail. It's a non-AI. I was able to pick it up for about $100. It is a bit heavy though. I am considering switching to the slightly more expensive Nikkor AI-S 85mm f2, which is much smaller and lighter (and sharper from what I hear).
I have the 85 ais f2. It never leaves my gh2. I love the look. I'm on my phone so it's a bit of a pain to post a link, but hop on vimeo and look up "Jubilee" by jeremy woods.

Gamma shift/switch once recording & any GH2 option parts continued

Yeah i love mine too. If you haven't hacked it yet, wait till you do and you point it at a tree line. Then you come to appreciate this little 800$ bad boy a little more:). As far as the gamma shift, Axel's right. This has been one of the most frequently ask questions on forums regarding the gh2 and nobody really has a solution. I've heard "hit record, and then expose... Then delete it....then record your take.". -which sadly i do, lol, noob. But if a situation rises where you're doing another patch test on your flower garden, and a hundred blackhawk helicopters decide to do a fly by 20 feet over your house, it's a bitch at that point, lol. -

I wanna see some footage of this thing with some different fingerprints on it. I wanna see how bad it can look when 800, 10 second BMC "tests" of somebody's cat hit the web. I'm stoked because it shoots raw and i can afford it. Now I can say I won't but my head against the ceiling when it comes to my gear.. It won't be a gear issue anymore. There are like, 5 more Canons coming out, a Gh3, and a full frame Sony ass kicker still this year... We only have 4 months left in 2012. There will always be something new coming to hold out for, but this one is kind of a no brainer..
-
Maybe I'm just in the shadows on the matter as I don't care about 4k. I know there are plenty of people out there that think it's important vs. 1080p. But right now Blu-ray is 1080p on my television and it's fine... Alas, being able to see the molecules on someone's cheek will be the groundbreaker. I personally am still debating picking up a 5d Mark 2 with a Mosaic filter. I still think it looks good in the right hands. I won't see my BMC until May 2013 probably.... Lol

John Brawley posts new Blackmagic Cinema Camera footage
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
He just posted a shitload of various grades. Same footage. http://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/a-roundup-of-the-current-blackmagic-footage/ -
Yeah man, you're pretty much screwed with that... Being an amateur, i can't really give you a solid solution like one of these pros on here might. I've often hit record, and exposed. Then erased it. It sucks. For a while i debated the gh2. I'd hit the red button, and a bunch of shitty noise would outline the shadows.

John Brawley posts new Blackmagic Cinema Camera footage
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah i really don't see the issue. I mean even in its compressed state, i'm still seeing things on the other side of the windows. She doesn't look like she's playing pool on a dying star like we usually see with dslr's. I think there's enough d.o.f. to isolate whatever you need to in frame. A lot of that "cinematic" look, is gonna be on you boys... None of us have gotten our hands on this thing with a dolly, or an anamorphic, or a slider yet.
