That comment above is extremely short sighted to say the least. There's no excuse for not improving existing features, be it stills or video. Convergence is happening. Do Apple sit by and not improve their graphics chip on an iPhone because it is primarily a phone not a games console? The size of the market Canon is pissing off with lacklustre DSLR video modes is sizeable.
You should read my topic on things like this...hilariously ironic.

Two great low budget music videos shot on the GH2
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Okay, where are you finding $700 GH2s? The American MSRP is $999 with the kit lens. Here in Canada it's even worse - $899 body only and a whopping $1449 with the 14-140mm lens. I know there are deals to be had in the used market, but even then most I've seen are in the $1000 range. Am I missing some cheap source of GH2-ness?
Check BH photo, Amazon, and Adorama man:). -
It is ridiculous. There is more to it than just the image processor though, and this is especially key when it comes to the 5D Mark III. The sensor has to be designed in a certain way to deliver video. The reason the GH2 is so good is that the sensor takes a hybrid approach to stills and video, from the drawing board up. It is able to do most of the pixel binning in hardware on the sensor itself, and it has a very fast readout. I don't think Canon took the effort required with the 5D Mark III, it may be political but it may also be that they didn't want to compromise the stills side by making a faster sensor with the likely increase in noise and cost that would have entailed. Now the 1DX has a very fast sensor and with some cooling it is turned into a 4K Cinema EOS. If video is gimped on the 1DX it will 99% be political, in my view. PS - The $250 Sony HX9v compact does better 1080p than a NEX so it is not just Canon being silly.
Haha! I can tell you really wanna like the 5d3 man.... You've already taken it apart. I think it may be a lost cause...lol. When are you gonna post up an awesome vid from your fs-100!? I'm interested in what you could do with that. There's footage everywhere from it, but it's always the high shutter speed jittery stuff. The right motion looks more filmic to me than resolution. I'd like to see your take with the FS100.
Im holding out for the magic lantern hack. Anyone think the bitrate increase feature may have give better results since now the 5dIII doesn't line skip?
If the Anti-Aliasing filter in front of the sensor is the issue, I don't know... I was wondering the same thing. Andrew said it didn't seem to make a difference though. Just a Pain in the @ss to clean the sensor.
Examining the full clip in detail, the 1DX has more resolution, however its antialiasing is weaker. It appears to be antialiased more on the vertical axis than the horizontal axis, giving it a more digital look vs. film. Ideally, the image is high resolution and antialiased. The 5D3 image looks more like film, even though it is lower resolution. Both images were noisy, and the ALL-I codec did not work very well for this shot (low motion): IPB would likely do better in this case with more detail and less block artifacts. 5D3 image sharpened at 33 + minor curve adjust, 1DX sharpened at 16, both Neat Video noise reduced. After processing, during playback and full screen, hard to see much of a difference in quality.
You know i agree. If the film look is Ultimately the goal with all these digital cameras, then if you watch movies shot on film, I don't think they are that sharp. I was watching Copelandia today. (5d3 short western narrative flick on Vimeo.). I guess i just need to watch it on a 60" screen to see what the problem is.... because i thought it looked pretty damn good. I think if it had been shot on Cinestyle it would've looked better. I remember having to watch movies on tv with rabbit ear antennas. Not one time do i remember thinking the movie looked less film-like because the picture was kind of blurry. The DR was great high and low. Nothing blown out or squashed. 24p 1/48th. Anamorphic. Motion blur. God i miss the 80's.

Cinema5D review of Canon 650D confirms no fix for moire and aliasing
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Andrew, i usually set 5d's gamma to 1.8, 4:4:4 full range, and BT 709 for Gh2 footage. I'm sure this has been answered before somewhere, but i found this through trial and error and would trust your opinion more than my troubleshooting. It looks flat as a board. But i'm not sure that's just gamma. -
Cinema5D review of Canon 650D confirms no fix for moire and aliasing
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Man. They have royally blew it this year. If it weren't for the market sweeping up the 5D2 by the boatloads back when it started the revolution, would they have even pursued a Cinema line?... Probably not. It was blind luck to begin with. So, they took the 5D, and fixed just enough so we'd all just stop whining, and gave us a 5D2.5 back.....for $1500 more. They are more expensive then anyone else....full frame or not. I'd literally start taking bets right now that they'll do the exact same thing with the 7D, and give us the same camera with Digic 5's, same APS-C sensor, no moire, aliasing problems, and shitty resolution for about $3000.... And then they'll probably pause after they announce the price... Expecting people to blast off in their pants in excitement. And then the gh3 will arrive. -
The only thing video wise that Canon has a leg to stand on is the Technicolor Cinestyle PP imo. If the GH2 had it, forget it. I like my T2i for that reason alone, but other than that, the cadence on my GH2's 24p with 1/40 motion blur looks "right" to me in terms of Cinematic. I'll never understand why Panasonic got the shaft on that deal.

A detailed look at how the Nikon D800E performs for video
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yep. I would imagine the BMD cinema camera is the only professional solution for quite a while....and if you haven't pre-ordered one yet, i mean a "while"... I would assume there's probably about 2 to 5% of the photog world with a GH2 that affiliate it with stills more than video. The rest of us loiter Personal View. Panasonic has to know the market for stills on their flagship camera is slim to none. If i wanted a still m43 factor, i'd grab an OMD. i love my GH2 to death, but my farts have more dynamic range at times it seems... I would love to shoot RAW... Now it's realistic for the rest of us. I have the basic concerns on the BMDCC like low-light, how important having no 60p frame rate will be to me later if i wanted it, battery life on an internal battery only, but my main concern is the crop factor. Apparently, it is a 2.4 crop factor. I question the Depth of Field obviously.. In John Brawley's blog, he notes that be used fast Leica glass and shot at f2.0 mainly. I really can't say i saw many shots at all that gave a fuzzy feeling in the DOF area. It's 16mm equivalent though, and his videos are really all we have to go by for now.. The right shots would make a difference. Otherwise, compared to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, etc... - the BMD is a cinema camera. From a group that is the defacto in color grading these days. It offers the whole workflow in a $3000 package. So other than the SSD's, why would anyone want to invest in a DSLR anymore if you're doing motion photography.. (i hate saying "video"...:). The only thing i see hot on its heels, because i've never been a fan of Sony's image, is the GH3 if it offers AVCHD Ultra. Then if it gets hacked, game over. Hopefully they tackle the range issues, but i'm sure with no real replacement for the AF100, they could do whatever they wanted to with this thing. Here's hopin:) P.s. Anybody else think the Alexa makes skintones look like milk? -
Advance press screenings of 48fps The Hobbit 'disappoint'
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Just a thought, did anybody come to the conclusion why they chose 48fps...?... Why not 60 if we're going video frame rates. It's a bold game changing move to tamper with the standard of Hollywood for so many years.... But so was digital. Screenings at 48fps may fail, then it wouldn't look ridiculous or have been a total waste of time if they cut it in half at 24? Who knows... I sure don't but it sounds better than pulling a professional big budget 24fps feature from 60fps had they gone that route... 48fps sounds like they're testing the waters. -
Sony NEX FS100 as a DSLR alternative - first impressions
Germy1979 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Andrew this camera looks more and more appealing as the months go by. I guess i'm still learning low light techniques and the right patches to get with my GH2, but it's so tiny. I knew it was small but wow. Lol. As far as overall image quality, i see plenty of DOF with the GH2, but the FS is designed for video. What are your thoughts on comparison, despite the fact that the GH2 bumps bitrates of 176 or so to the Fs100's 24....? -

So Canon thinks it's better to release things "no one" could afford with stupid things missing (like articulating screen) instead of a great $800 650D wtih GH2-like 1080p that will destroy every single product from competitors and sell millions? I'll never understand how economy works ;D
Companies that try to protect their higher end products will eventually loose out as someone will pickup that low-end market space. It is beginning to look like Sony and/or Panasonic could start doing that this year. It'll be interesting to see how video is supported with the GH3 and NEX5 replacement while Panasonic and Sony expand their pro video lines. Or will they dumb down the video in their traditional cameras.
Check out 43 rumors.com There's the new Avchd ultra coming out. It looks to be a codec orgasm... I bet the GH3 will be awesome. In fact, i bet it checks off almost everything on the 1080 wishlist, and it does it within a realistic price range that someone can attain.

Give us a flat, uncompressed image at 1080 with none of the artifacts, a decent sensor that won't sh-t its pants in a shadow, good bitrate, swivel screen, 4:2:2, blah blah. We all know the list. Something like, an Alexa that fits in the palm of your hand for 3 or 4,000$. Lmao.

This is funny. It's like these companies just aimed to destroy all that is RED and the Evil Jannard Empire, lol. I just bought a GH2 and in September, that will be outdated. Vitaliy Kiselev was announced to be working with Panasonic on an official basis now, so i imagine the days of "free and awesome" hacks and patches will be against the law now that they brought him on board. However, everything is 4k and 8,000$ + now. Still can't afford anything, and that's what i think sucks for all of us. They've priced these "innovative cameras" way out of everybody's reach still. Believe it or not, there are extraordinarily talented cinematographers and storytellers out there that have day jobs, families and bills...that can't neccessarily call a rental house at the drop of a hat when they have an opening in their spontaneous schedule of free time to say, "hey! The kids are at their grandmothers! Can i swing by and rent a _______? ...none available?.....sh-t.". Suffice it to say, Andrew has pretty much enlightened us all to the crown jewels we already have available like the GH2 and the FS100. I watched Act of Valor the other day. A sh-tload of 2008 Mark 2's made that and i didn't see anything on the 40+ wide screen that made me say "Holy Mother of God! Did you see the Aliasing on that guys hair! I want my damn money back!". I forsee the little "in the crevice" companies coming through like the Kineraw series coming out, the digital Bolex maybe, and Panasonic thinking about the rest of us......hopefully on the latter. Update: Before anyone starts calling me names, i went to post the link on the Vitaliy thing. Apparently it was an April Fools joke posted before April Fools. My bad.

;D oh.....hi! So i picked up a Kowa Prominar 16H (American version) for a steal on Ebay. I Also got a killer deal on a Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2. I'd like to use both on a GH2. I was getting a Fader HD Vari-ND filter 58mm for the front of the Zeiss... But i found the deal on the Prominar. In Andrews book it says the Kowa won't vignette with a 35mm on the GH2. From what I read, the Kowa's back end has a 50mm thread? So my question(s) here are: 1. What step ring do i need to attach the two lenses? 58mm to 50mm step DOWN ring, or a step UP ring? or a clamp setup? Would it vignette stepping down to the Kowa? 2. Can i use the ND filter in there anywhere with an Anamorphic lens on the front of the Zeiss? Am i supposed to place it in between the two with some kind of step configuration? How do you guys do this? Should i get an ND filter for the front of the Kowa instead? I'm sorry if these are dumb questions... Lol. I've tried looking this up with vague answers. Thanks in advance guys, any help would be great! I don't want to use duct tape, lol.

Soooooooo.... There are cameras coming out of the woodwork these days. I left the house for dinner...and now there is a digital camera with a hand crank that shoots raw 12 bit 4:4:4.....for a thousand dollars less than a 5d3. A 4k dslr awaits, we're still confirming the Hdmi output of the D800, the Kinefinity super 35 is coming, and the 1dx is officially on pre order. Well okay... (good times) Anybody heard anything new on a GH3? I've only found old news on it from last year speculating photokina in September. I was thinking about starting my own environmentally friendly camera company. "Green". Shot on a Green B.M.F.'r Shot on a Green "Marge"

Yeah bud. I'm crossing my fingers for ya that it's not your camera, but it really just sounds like your cards. Are you using the Magic Lantern hack with it? I had a Sandisk Extreme (not pro) -16gb card and i couldn't record longer than a few seconds past CBR 1.5 . Like Sara said above, i'd do a format. Hope you get it fixed!

1/40... But honestly, what are the downfalls of a shutter at 220 like that? I think it looks smoother and a little more cinematic in "motion" than the 1/50 i usually see from the GH2... But then again i'm a noob. That opening shot just catches your eye though.

Yeah i saw this.. It looks exciting. I tell you, i really wanna wait to see all the cameras coming out before i get one. But i'll never get one and i just wanna make something already! Lol.... I think in the end, the hacked GH2 will still stand tall.. Plus the invite says "exclusive screening", so it may just be the Ron Howard thing... It's cinema EOS continuing a story though, so it could be the 4k dslr, but it will be $10,000 probably and thus, still out of reach.
-
Yeah for real... It makes me wonder why they would even pursue such a product after the price point they slapped on the C300. Anytime you place a camera in the same ballpark as a brand new automobile, people feel like they have to settle for less. Nobody has $15,000 just, LAYING around.. Esspecially if the market is indie filmmakers. Not this day in age...And to be honest, who the hell would rent a c300 if they can have a 4k redcode raw image from the Scarlet for the same price?... Maybe they just wanted to conglomerate the whole camcorder division into one badass camcorder to save money in the end. And maybe the angle here is compression with the 4k dslr. They'll give us a 5d that boast a 4k image as a selling point.... Then squash the piss out of it in the compression stage, lol. I hope not but, if its cheaper than a c300, you get what you pay for.
