Soooo, I have this funny little short I'm putting together involving a SEAL unit on a duck hunt. (How efficiently badass that would be carried out like a regular OP with the use of all of their resources.) I'll be spending the better part of the next month in a field down south blowing it all to hell, lol. The only thing missing is a pretty vital piece and that is the helicopters that fly them in. Surprisingly, this entire sketch will be done with practical effects sans the 1,000 ducks that get digitally demolished.. We're really blowing shit up. My question is, among you guys, have any of you had any envolvement with the military and getting the use of their aircraft for a feature? I'm not Michael Bay, so I imagine it'll be a ridiculous endeavor, or it just won't happen because they'll want millions. I can't seem to find anything online about it. I'm not looking for a squadron of Blackhawks to drop 20 feet off the deck, but I do want a rather sexy sunrise lift off as well as some interior shots flying. a few aerial shots, plus the field landing touch & go. Literally, everything else is good to go

Right. I guess you just slap an L lens on, set it at RAW, 800asa, Film, push the iris button, record. I mean it really is the people's cam. Lol
-
Yeah losing a stop of DR sucks, but it's one stop. I can sure live with 12 stops after running with a Gh2 for years, lol. I'm just curious how dirty it is. Neat video is great, but it won't save a shot with a lot of detail in it. Seems to be a big concern With everyone about the noise. The flipside to this delay, (which would be just fine with me) - is if they delivered an image that exceeds the original concept. Better noise floor than the 2.5k, maybe we get that 13th stop back, etc..? No one has seen any footage from it anyway.

When I had to send my first bmc back to Blackmagic, the process of sending DNG's back and forth was between 400 and 800 Asa. They basically said 200 and 1600 were irrelevant. Even then, it was "stay at 800." The thing with these cams is, they have options. But why? Lol
-
Yes this is what gets me, the noise. They've already started telling people to shoot in the lowest possible iso setting on the 4k. I don't expect it to be a clean iso champ like the C series, but what should we expect?
-
http://vimeo.com/73534866 I guess it's splitting hairs. I've actually gotten similar results on my BMCC 2.5k where 172.8 looks a little more traditional in the cinematic motion blur sense. It's so close though, it could just be me convincing myself. I don't believe I have an eye "that" tuned to tell the difference.

The answer is probably buried deep within a thread at the bottom of the ocean, but does anyone have an update on how this camera is coming along, what BMD is improving, etc?
-
Camera threads always seem to get hostile.. It is a mathematical fact. I will say this: (and not to get off topic) ...I've been through - "3" - bmcc 2.5k cams in 4 months... Each replaced by BMD support.. each an acknowledged legitimate problem with the cam. My ego doesn't have enough in the bank to stand off if someone tells me the problem is operator error, so I'm all about a solution considering the shipping is $50 every time I send it to California.. But 3 in a row is either an issue in the Q.A. area, ...or really shitty luck. The first one had noise in the green channel so bad, all you could do is barely push it, much less add any post sharpening. The second had the back focus issue. My last one produced what looked like bad web compression on the rear display with blocky shadows and smeared details, & "rolling noise" waves that would roll up the scene in dark areas. (Truly a weird problem to have, but others had it also: http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12588) Yes the pocket cam is a different camera altogether of course, & I'm not bad mouthing BMD. Plenty of people have perfectly functional cameras from them. (just not me, lol.) In these early days of release however, I'm just saying if you get a Blackmagic camera, put it through its paces before your return window expires.. Make sure you get a good one while you can!... Even if it starts feeling like harassment. They're cheap, everybody wants one, and BMD have a delivery reputation to mend.

Right? I've heard the Mysterium X could get noisy, but that looks like bad mosquito noise. That dude looks like he's on the business end of about 17 Viagra also. I've never seen skin look so red, it crossed into magenta, lol. I haven't kept up with the ML Raw project enough to know if it checks all of the boxes these days, but a big one is reliability. The card they tell you to get for 5D3 raw that's dependable and gives you enough time not to be a waste of time is about $700. - Lexar 128gb 1000x. The Komputer Bay's have too many horror stories I've heard for anyone to wanna hand over hundreds and cross their fingers...
-
are you on a mac? If so "Rawmagic" from the guys that made 5dtoRGB is really fast. It's free in the app store now also I believe. converts the ML files to raw DNG's that drop right in Resolve or ACR.
-
I'd post a pic, but if anyone has the same problem, they'll know exactly what I'm talking about when I ask: Does anyone else's BMCC rear touch screen show banding or compression artifacts? (I mean, you'll definitely know if it looks like mine.).. I'm in film mode shooting raw. You can see it on Film and Video display settings whether you're shooting in Pro Res or Raw, and it looks like bad web compression. It doesn't show up on the actual footage, but i'm curious if this is normal now while I'm still under warranty. lol.. Shadows are blocky and stair stepped, certain details are smudgy, etc. I didn't have it on my last bmcc so I'm curious. Blackmagic replaced my last cam because of "abnormal and excessive amounts of noise in the green channel." (Their diagnosis after testing it themselves.) This one looks much better in that regard, but has banding and blocky compression type artifacts on the rear display that the other one didn't have. Had to have a trade off I suppose.. lol Just curious if i'm in for round 2... shipping can break it off in you. cheers

True dat. There are only a handful of CF cards that are reliable (key word) -enough to do ML raw and they're pretty pricey compared to SSD's. Komputer Bay cards seem to be hit and miss with people, and the only one I've seen that had the blessing of "best" and also has enough storage not to be a waste of time is the Lexar 128gb 1000x... That is around $700? = 30 minutes of ML raw on a Mark 3. I've not yet ran into a situation with the BMC that needed a crew. lol p.s. Post stabilization is a lot better with 2.5k than 1080. ...if you're into that sort of thing. Maybe even reframing.
-
The low light on the Mark 3 raw is a step up from the BMCC, plus the highlights are really pleasant. All of these cameras come with an armada of adjectives that can't really evoke what "exactly" they are doing & no one can put their finger on.... but in the Raw Mark 3 / ScarletX comparison video, I will say the Scarlet looks more like..... film. (There it is. lol.) - (Though it is a miniscule and probably opinionated preference in the video) It looks like it's more in the mid tones between the Mark 3 raw and everyone else. but man.... this looks incredibly sexy: http://vimeo.com/71692234 Mark 3 raw... The only gripe I'd say is the $700 Lexar 128gb 1000x card that's actually rated dependable, but gets you only about 30 minutes of footage. To me, the Komputer Bay cards seem way too hit and miss with all of the horror stories I've heard... Then again many people have them and they're fine... but I'd rather not be "crossing my fingers" when I spent my $$$$.
-
No dude i know it was directed at him, lol.. Watched 2 clips & told me i didn't know what the hell i was doing with ANY camera and needed a Rebel rather than buy my way into skill... It was pretty badass.

They're deciphering the aliasing issue. More than likely it's an AE downscaling problem. A quick way to tell with the noise issue is a high contrast scene at ASA 400. I was told it shouldn't be creating static like that at 800 regardless. According to them, shoot at 800, 100% zebras, make them disappear, focus, record. It likes light. I'll pm you the outcome man. As far as the amateur comment... well: http://youtu.be/PZeDFwTcnCc It turned out you were right. lol
-
On second thought... If your camera is in good shape and you're not experiencing electro-static in your shadows regardless of exposure, unless you're just dying to know the turn out for the sake of knowing, It only took 48 hours for somebody on here to pull the "I'm the real deal" card, and tell me I'm an amateur. Low and behold the company themselves have confirmed I wasn't crazy. Jesus.. I never said I was Adrian Biddle asc. I'm still learning this thing. Thanks to "HurtinMinorKey" for all your help, seriously! Thanks to Peederj for the reality check. and good luck on the next Terrence Malick flick. I'm sure he'll value your opinion. smh.
-
lol.. I'll keep you guys posted ..If the "OP" is the acronym for ...me.
-
So ideally, video display mode is like a rec. 709 in cam lut that acts as a better reference when shooting? I usually hit the iris button, remove the zebras so i don't clip any pixels, and go. I always hear this camera needs more light than most, and anything under or over ASA 800 is the devil. Just a different beast for me i suppose.
-
Sooooo the conclusion is use resolve? I didn't push it that far. At any rate i appreciate you taking the time to look into it.
-
Here is one of the noisiest clips of the lot if you want to give it a shot... https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/8c7cc50392625e2338e339703711c58820130811184356/5fd4e5d9fbf2ca68eae58fb35c415f9320130811184356/32624e
-
Thank you! I'm using AE to grade, and ACR to import. I can do the switch to Resolve, however what bothers me now is that i was not over exposed on the camera when i shot it. I was in film display mode and it was balanced decent. So i'm not sure what to do about that. Thank you for taking the time to do this
-
Damn. I hope so.. You sound pretty confident.
-
You won't see it on a single dng. It's like static and the footage has to be in motion. I'm really hoping I screwed something up here in the workflow, because it will be a pain in the ass making a round trip to BMD. Lol. On my last video, i had to use Neatvideo on every single shot. It was easy because it had large enough areas of a single color to sample and tune.
-
In After Effects. 80% transform. I also tried MB Instant HD and got the same results.
-
Here is a link to the raw dng sequence from :32 guys. Thanks Julian for the Wetransfer tip:) https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/b43eaf3a2721b02139f27ce1997d245020130810150128/e68052f9a1e8100b5e809cc7f5864f5a20130810150128/c553fb It's zipped at 1.37gb. Like I said, I appreciate the help guys. It's overexposed but that wasn't what I was looking at when I hit record. Have a look when you have time and let me know what you see. Andrew I will try Resolve lite. Did you guys notice the aliasing in the water as well? Also, you cannot see it in a single dng. The sequence has to be moving.
