Ikonoskop A-cam dll versus Blackmagic Cinema Camera
shijan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
difference in sharpness also can be caused by different lenses or different DOF, so its can't be too objective in this test. again back to filmic look its also too complex and subjective. for example scene with bike as for me more cinematic in BMCC version, and scene with musicians is more filmic in ikonoskop version. if exclude artistic feel, composition, lighting and other outside factors, the filmic "look" its not a magic its just a complex of parameters of camera: dynamic range, shutter speed (not sure about shutter type, but would like to find the truth)+exposure+lens+aperture+grain+zero digital artifacts+you can do anything with colors if you shoot raw. so slightly different shutter speeds - and one footage became less "filmic" than other. -

Ikonoskop A-cam dll versus Blackmagic Cinema Camera
shijan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ikonoskop: - purple tint (as usual) - low dymamic range => image exposed differently than BMCC => deep dark shadows, which may cause people think that camera has more cinematic-dramatic look... also uncomfortable burning highlights. - slightly softer image, but for example cello strings looks better. BMCC: - greenish tint (unexpectedly) - slightly sharper image, but sharper not always means better - yes it has more aliasing and moire. - rolling shutter bla bla bla p.s. thanks for this long awaited comparison ;) -
Digital Bolex image quality - Exclusive look at sensor samples and footage
shijan replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
hmm, very strange example of footage. as to screen grabs - clean image (because RAW) with low dynamic range (because KAI sensor) what else could be expected from this camera? it is also could be very interesting to see aliasing tests compared to Blackmagic camera... BTW nice looking software UI as for me! -

seems in addition to sharpness loss at the frame edges this adapter produces additional aberration effect...

but from other side dynamic range of test videos from big brother of this camera for my eye visually looks mush wider than 11.5 stops. -

11.5 stops is epic fail for this device. i personally vote for same camera but with 16 mm sized sensor with wider dynamic range which can be used with tons of inexpensive lenses. and also allow to reduce the camera cost as so as small sensors are pretty inexpencive. -
my test chart based on BMC sensor pixel size specs. 16 mm lenses almost fit to 2k, wonder why everybody so need those strange 2.5 k size? i believe 2k will be also looking good, same to 1080.

Panavision working with NASA on digital cinema camera technology?
Blackmagic Design hasn't confirmed that its Cinema Camera uses the BAE/Fairchild CIS2051 sensor.
its clear that it uses that sensor without BM confirmation. Just look here even 30 fps limit match to BM http://ridl.cfd.rit.edu/products/sCMOS/scmos_white_paper_8mb.pdf mera specs. -
just for test: classic Kodak test image in 2K and 4K. in this image i combine 2k and 4k areas. Did you see where one ends and another begins? Funny isn't it? There is a button DOWNLOAD there. The aliasing is more visible in motion, not in still grab.
Didnt really notice the aliasing but i wasnt looking for it really hard. also that is still 720p, not 1080
its 1080 there and there is no need to looking hard to see it. also it is very strange black flickering line in the upper left corner
Yes dSLR such as the 5D2 has high DR that is why you see highlight roll off unlike the GH2 were it clips highlights.
i also have theory that canon DSLRs has some kind of tricky digital limiter for highlights. those burning holes always looks smudged by yellowish paint on canon footage :)
-
those few more stops are not so simple to do. i believe 13 stops its camera limit, which is still pretty cool. and they should correct first those strange color blocky sensor noise.
-
it definitely needs a test footage. in theory cmv2000 capable for tricky nonlinear modes with 13.3 (80 db) or 15-fstops (90db) which can be done by complicated sensor curve turning, and seems its not so easy as people imagine. in linear it capable for mode 10 f-stops (60db) it really pointless for cinema even with its 120 fps here is for example some footage from other camera with looks like same sensor http://www.indiecam.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=188&Itemid=108
